00:09 I am Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth to break down the Patriots

00:17 Schedule we have it

00:19 We have the well, we already knew the opponents

00:21 But now we have the order the biweeks the primetime games, which there are many but we have the whole schedule now in front

00:27 Of us to break down but before we get into that very quickly

00:31 We did have a little bit of Patriots news break this afternoon and we have a contract extension for the wonderful

00:38 David Andrews or Barth, I believe you're calling him the logo now. So I it's a pitch

00:44 It's it's it's a working title, but it was the thought I threw out there. I mean, he does look like Pat the Patriot, right?

00:50 so

00:51 He was David Andrews was going to be a free agent at the end of this year

00:56 So now he gets an extension through 2025

00:58 Field gates who broke it said he's do a base value of 12 million over the next two seasons with a maximum value of 13

01:07 Million and 8 million fully guaranteed. So we'll see it the nitty-gritty details how that

01:12 How that works how that affects the cap when it comes out, but David Andrews is now under contract through next season

01:18 Yeah, and you know good signing once again

01:21 The the Patriots continue to reward their own obviously before it was some of their younger players now

01:26 it's a veteran and David Andrews actually the longest tenured player on the team, but

01:31 If he it's kind of funny because we you know at the end of last year

01:36 We were kind of asking about retirement and I don't think this was the thing to like

01:40 Oh, we're gonna add on a dummy year. Even if you don't play it, they don't need the money, right? So

01:45 They're gonna rebuild their offensive line over the next couple years. He's he's the leader of that group

01:50 He's the captain of that group. He's captain the team. He's captain that group. He's a steadying presence

01:54 And so to have him locked up I do think is important

01:57 Yeah, especially when you have a rookie quarterback and Drake May right and maybe now with this new offense. It looks like maybe some of those

02:04 Responsibilities at the line of scrimmage which might fall more in the center, which that's something we talked about with Mac

02:10 You know last year a lot of he was talking about that

02:12 Presnap checklist where there's so much on the quarterback and you want to kind of reel some of that back

02:17 It looks like maybe some of that

02:19 Is gonna lie on more of the center now this year and to have an experienced guy like David Andrews in that role with a young

02:24 quarterback

02:25 Makes Drake May's life a little bit easier there. So nice to see him

02:29 Extended he'll be he'll be staying around

02:32 You hope as long as you know this year goes well, he's not gonna retire and he'll be back for at least two more years

02:39 Here now, so that is David Andrews again extended through

02:43 2025 one more year added on to that deal, but

02:47 Let's get into the schedule. That's that's the big news. We have our schedule

03:09 I think it's the second worst strength of schedule

03:11 in terms of win percentage, so

03:16 But I I mean the first thing we all look at is the bye week, which is it it's a late bye

03:21 we have week 14, which

03:23 Coincidentally, it was a week 14 by the head when Mac Jones was a rookie in 2021. So

03:29 It's kind of a tough spot if you were looking maybe, you know

03:34 Wait till the by to put Drake May Drake May and under center there

03:37 Like you're gonna have to wait till week 15 and at that point like is it even worth it?

03:42 Is he gonna be ready?

03:42 So it's a late by and of course with Mac that didn't matter because he ended up starting week one

03:47 But that that's where I think all of our eyes went went immediately

03:51 Yeah, you you know the mini buys early - I'll say first

03:55 I just on the strength of schedule alone what I think people may be missing

03:58 The point of because I've heard people say well, how can a last-place team? How can a team of the third overall pick?

04:04 It's supposed to you know

04:05 adjust

04:05 based on on previous record strength schedule strength of schedule only impacts three games

04:10 Because you're gonna play everybody in your division twice no matter what you're gonna play another full AFC

04:15 Division no matter what you're gonna play another full NFC division no matter what so those have nothing to do with the standings

04:22 the only games that have to do with the standings are

04:25 Your you play two teams in the AFC that finish in the same spot as you and one team in the NFC

04:31 That finished in the same spot as you and the reality is when you look at this for the Patriots

04:37 those three teams the three teams that are dependent on your previous record are two teams that

04:44 Finish last place in large part because they're all pro quarterbacks got hurt in the Bengals and Chargers

04:50 So they're not your typical last place team and the Bears who had the first overall pick and absolutely loaded up

04:55 so it

04:58 It's a little overblown that oh the schedule is reflective of you know

05:02 Who you you know who you have to put who you end up playing?

05:06 It really only impacts three games

05:08 This is the reality of it and they it just so happened that this year

05:12 The last place teams the Patriots are facing weren't your typical last place teams as for the bye week. Yes, but on

05:18 I mean you go right to that

05:20 if so, that's gonna be

05:22 The week of January 8th you about a week left in the sea a month left in the season at that point

05:26 man, if Drake Mays not ready

05:29 He's not ready at that point

05:31 I don't know what would go into him at that point does for you and even off the mini buys you look

05:36 okay earlier, I think you know week four might make some sense about a month into the season, but

05:40 First start on the road at arguably the best defense in the NFL. That's tough tough spot tough spot

05:48 So you got a you know, he's not Drake Mays not gonna have extra time to prepare for his first start

05:53 So, okay, then where do you where do you try to fit him in?

05:56 You know, I've seen some people say maybe that week five game you come back from the West Coast against Miami

06:01 He's had a full month

06:03 You know some people said you get back from London that week eight game at the Jets the Jets defense is good though

06:08 I don't know about that. Maybe it's week nine at the Titans

06:11 Some people put more emphasis on the first start being on the road

06:15 Others don't so depending on how you feel about that that might be the spot you look at and if it really gets pushed

06:21 I I think actually the week before the by

06:23 going into the Colts game is probably the latest you

06:26 Realistically make that change because you're getting a home game against a slightly lesser opponent

06:30 And then you get two weeks to really go over it before you got to go at it again

06:34 But even still you're getting pretty late there. I think the sweet spots here are

06:38 If they're gonna do it now, they may not do it based on the schedule

06:41 They may just shoehorn him in and say it's not the softest landing spot

06:45 But whatever we're making the switch for one reason or the other so this isn't to be all-in doll or maybe he wins the job

06:50 Out of camp. We spent three freaking months doing this Brian

06:53 2021 months of my life. I'll never get back as we were convinced bill was gonna have cam Newton start the season

06:59 I you know, I look at week five. I look at week eight. I look at week nine. I think those are the most realistic

07:06 spots to put him in

07:08 Yeah week fives an interesting one because you know, you have two home games there back-to-back

07:13 Miami is a team you're pretty familiar with so maybe that helps in your game planning there

07:20 After would you do going to I don't know about going to London. It depends how they planning on travel, right?

07:28 Exactly. So last year they did the funky thing where they went out

07:31 They went out Friday or Thursday night. They got there Friday. It was kind of late

07:36 So they only had like two days there one day of practice and a jet lag, but maybe you want to come back and

07:43 Depending on what your record is entering week a maybe your team's a little jet lag

07:48 Maybe that could kind of give you a kickstart going to Drake May at home

07:51 I get you know, the Jets are a good defense, but you but you're at home

07:54 So depending how they do that London travel that could kind of factor into maybe when we see May right around midseason at that point

08:02 Yeah, I think it's somewhere in that run and you're spot-on

08:05 I've seen some people suggest could he make his first start in London one?

08:09 It depends on how they schedule the week, right?

08:12 Are they gonna have a full week of practice?

08:14 Are they gonna go out Tuesday and have the full week?

08:15 Are they gonna travel Friday like they did for Germany? The other thing is and

08:19 And I'm not saying this should be the deciding factor. I'm just didn't bring it up

08:24 Does this team want to do another quarterback change around an international game?

08:28 Because you know, we're all gonna point right back to last year

08:32 And that shouldn't be the deciding factor, but I do think it's something that might be considered. Yeah

08:39 Hopefully this quarterback change is a little bit a little bit better than right

08:44 Different circumstances. I'm not gonna say it's the same circumstances, but it is once again

08:49 Oh, you're coming back from Europe with a new quarterback

08:51 Yeah, although they didn't I guess technically make because they did the split game against the Giants

08:56 Yeah, they came back

08:58 Yeah, because they started max still

09:00 That was the by right they had the by they took the by after the international game, which they're not gonna do this year

09:07 I'm actually okay with that. I it sucks that they should have taken it

09:11 I don't think they would have known that they were gonna have a week 14 by if they didn't take it

09:16 But week 8 is a great spot. Like if week 8 was the by week 9 at Tennessee Drake May here's the keys, right?

09:23 That's like we always talk about Halloween like that is that's like yeah 10 27 is week 8. So that's literally Halloween

09:30 Halloween week that would have been a great spot you go to London you come back

09:34 you have the by that would have been a good time to you know, kind of make that switch there, but

09:38 Yeah

09:41 Maybe I mean you said week 13 maybe like they bump that up week 11 because you know

09:46 You had two home games there then you're going to Miami which again, you know, you're familiar with them

09:51 You obviously haven't played well in Miami, but you get three games there before the by and then four games after

09:57 What do you think about the four games after the by there? Especially the bills?

10:02 Two out of three to end the year they did that with they did that with Miami

10:07 I think a few years ago, right? Yeah, they had a they had a cluster there even

10:11 max rookie

10:13 Max rookie year like it wasn't two and three but they played the you know, the bills like the Monday night. Yeah

10:19 Yeah

10:19 they had like the Monday night win game and then a few weeks after the by and then they ended up having to go there

10:25 again in the wild card, but

10:27 What do you think of those that last month there? Especially Buffalo two out of three to end it?

10:32 Well Cardinals are very winnable game

10:34 so we can it's really those last three and what's interesting to me is let's say that the

10:38 Patriots do kind of punch a little bit above expectations and Drake may does give them a push

10:43 say they're at

10:45 Six wins seven wins coming off that Cardinals game. So that has a Matt

10:49 What would that be at six to seventeen?

10:53 Six and eight. Yeah, let's say they're six and eight seven and not know that would be that's too many games with three

11:02 Well, oh, yeah seven and seven. Yeah. No, you're right. You're right. Don't make me do math seven and seven six and eight

11:06 I'm bad at math

11:08 Let's say there's seven and seven six and eight coming off that Cardinals game

11:11 Which I know not a lot of people are counting on that. I don't think it's the most unrealistic outcome

11:15 You know that

11:18 You finish with nine wins. You're probably in the playoffs in the 17 format. So that Chargers game

11:26 Becomes a potential, you know, essentially playoff game because the Chargers will probably be a 910 win team somewhere in there

11:33 8 9 10 win team. So

11:35 That's a game. I look at like if they make the push

11:38 Could be there and who knows what those bill get bills games at the bills

11:42 Take a step back painters. Take a bigger step forward. Like there's a chance if they kind of

11:47 Hit that rebound smoothly, which again no guarantee

11:51 But if they hit that rebound smoothly like those last three games all have the potential to hold significant weight if they're chasing a wild card

11:58 Now based on the way things have gone in recent years with their luck after Thanksgiving

12:03 They'll be in it and they'll lose all three

12:05 wouldn't rule that out either but

12:08 There is a chance that those three games especially that Chargers game actually have some meaning to them

12:13 Yeah, that was the math path

12:15 They were what first right first in the AFC going in the by then they drop drop three out of the four

12:20 Yeah

12:21 Yeah, and maybe you're looking week 17 week 18. Those are TBD that could become maybe a primetime game

12:28 Saturday afternoon game if it's if it's Patriots Chargers, the loser is eliminated from playoff contention

12:35 That's that could be a Saturday game. Yeah

12:38 What do you think about the one?

12:42 One primetime game. I mean, that's what you get for a four and 13 team

12:46 But you're going to New York early in the season their home opener Aaron Rodgers

12:51 If he's still walking by week three

12:54 You get the Jets there Thursday night football

12:58 short week early in the year

13:01 Well, I mean, what's the draw? I can't say I don't get it

13:05 I and I think there is I think it's undersold a little bit

13:08 I think there is some interest nationally in the post Belichick Patriots

13:12 I thought they might get one I guess it's Thursday night, but I thought they I thought they make it one like real

13:18 primetime game early

13:20 Cuz we know like the Monday night games are kind of mad at this point. I thought maybe you'd get

13:24 Patriots Bears on a Monday night in the first month of the season because hey, it's Drake May it's Caleb Williams

13:30 You have the post bill Belichick Patriots like there's some juice there

13:34 Or maybe you'd get you know paid the bills coming back to Gillette where they lost last year or something like that

13:42 Or something set up but at the end of the day, I think the league

13:45 They don't want to put a Jacoby Bursett nothing against Jacoby Bursett, but they don't want to put a Jacoby Bursett offense

13:53 That's producing the same as it was last year in prime time

13:56 They don't know when Drake May is gonna be the guy so they're hesitant to give the Patriots prime time games

14:00 I think they put the one early. I think that's all about the Jets. It's the Jets home openers

14:04 Aaron Rodgers returned to MetLife first time since he tours Achilles the Patriots are a footnote in that game

14:10 That's not even a prime time because of the Patriots. So I

14:12 Get it. I get why the league doesn't see the Patriot

14:16 I thought they'd seem as a little bit more of a draw than this just because of the post Belichick thing

14:20 But I can't say I'm overly surprised

14:23 when can they

14:26 start

14:27 Flexing games in and out five week five. Yeah, they can

14:32 Make sense

14:35 So, I mean, yeah, maybe if everything goes smoothly for the Patriots and they surprise one of those late games

14:42 Gets flexed but I mean, I'll take the 11 one one o'clock starts

14:49 I will gladly take take all those at one point. I don't love I'm the one person doesn't like the one o'clock. I prefer

14:55 The four four o'clock is the best four o'clock is the best one, but I actually like eight

15:00 I'm a night person, but I prefer eight o'clock to one o'clock

15:04 Yeah, the one thing I don't like, you know

15:06 Covering the one o'clock games as you're just so out of touch with all the other games around the league

15:12 It is going on because you're so just hyper focused on Patriots

15:16 obviously

15:17 Especially if it's a home game and you're at the stadium like you just have no

15:20 Recollection of any of the other one o'clock games where if it's like the four o'clock

15:23 You can watch red zone in the one o'clock window then, you know

15:27 There's only three or four or 4 p.m. Games going on so you can put all your focus on the Patriots there

15:31 They didn't catch the prime time game

15:33 So it makes it a much longer Monday going back through the rest of the league watching a one o'clock game

15:39 Yeah, which I think we have to do all but what three times this year

15:42 Or no, not quite

15:45 one two

15:48 Three yeah five times they're out of the because the two West Coast games

15:52 The London game the Thursday night game in the by so it's five weeks. They're not playing in the one o'clock

15:58 What are the four o'clock just the Niners in the West Coast? Yeah, the four not the 425 like prime time the the hey

16:05 We're not gonna make people get up at 6 a.m. And watch their own team games

16:08 Could those be Brady games? Those would be Fox, right? I'm sure they'll give Brady one of them. There's also usually although I wonder there's usually

16:17 Fox and CBS end up exchanging some games to balance out like Thanksgiving and stuff like one o'clock sometimes

16:24 Yeah, so I I do what if Fox ends up with the game at Gillette. I'd imagine they'd send Brady to that. I

16:30 Mean, it's also he is also the a crew. I don't know. Well

16:34 Pat's Niners four o'clock that could that screams Tom Brady. Well, let's see that it does you're right

16:40 Let's see what else week for NFL. Let's see if there's any other major game on that week. Oh, no. Oh

16:48 No, that's Thursday night. I was gonna say Giants Cowboys

16:52 You can lock in every time it happens, but that is the Thursday night game. So that is actually big

16:58 No, this is week for last year, why do I want that?

17:03 Here we go. Okay week for this year. So yeah Giants Cowboys Thursday night. So that's not for Brady

17:10 Saints Falcons. No

17:13 Bengals Panthers no Rams Bears probably not

17:16 Oh, they actually already haven't decided which games are on CBS which games are on Fox

17:21 Well, really Eagles Bucks they play in the playoffs that year that could be a you know

17:27 Well Fox doesn't have a 425 game this week

17:29 They've commanders Cardinals Patriots Niners. Yeah, I in in less Eagles Bucks becomes like a thing

17:37 Maybe they both start three, you know, yeah, so Fox's other games that week are Saints Falcons

17:49 And Eagles Bucks those uh in in commanders Cardinals was the only other Fox games that week

17:57 So that's you could probably pencil Brady in for that one loosely pencil Tom Brady into that

21:06 What else we got on the schedule open in Cincinnati?

21:09 They've been a team. I mean Joe Burrow is back

21:12 So, you know you assume the Bengals are going to be the top AFC can contender

21:18 But they've been a team that's kind of you know, the tourists started slow with Burrow. So

21:23 Any hope there maybe stealing one in Cincinnati and then like three out of four on the road in in September like that

21:30 That's kind of a tough tough start which could be good if you're starting, you know, Jacoby, right?

21:35 Get those road games out of the way and save the home games for Drake May

21:38 But what do you think about that Bengals and that's kind of start though? Yeah, I mean, so first of all

21:43 It's a weirdly segmented schedule. So then we have one home game in September and only one home game in November

21:48 It's weird

21:50 Bengals is a sneaky. I don't want to say it's an easy game. I'm not even necessarily saying the win it but

21:57 The Bengals historically start slow

21:59 Joe Burrow is coming off of a wrist injury

22:04 We don't know how much T Higgins is gonna practice like that's and the Patriots almost beat him two years ago

22:11 It's like so I'm not saying I'm not saying bet the house on the Bengals or anything, but that's like a sneaky

22:16 We did this on catch-22 earlier today. It's not one of the five toughest games on I think we has the sixth toughest game

22:21 on Patriots schedule all things considered

22:24 But then you've got I mean Seattle, New York, San Francisco

22:29 Really really tough defenses now, maybe there's an advantage that it's all the same base defensive style

22:36 Right. It's all that that that Robert Sala

22:39 you know Niners defense, but

22:42 The the old Seattle cover three, but those are those are three really tough defense off the jump

22:48 You got to get ready for one on a short week

22:50 You got another one where you got to go cross country and just play a really really good freaking team

22:54 It's it's a tough month. It's it's a tough month. I think an own for start is not off the table

22:59 again, Cincinnati

23:02 Maybe win a bowl. I think it will see what the sea ox and I'm doing a quarterback

23:06 That game feels like it could be in play the Jets and Niners games though. We're very very tough

23:12 Especially for that early in the season

23:14 Yeah, then of course, you know come on

23:16 Miami Texans that is going to be a great game with CJ Stroud coming to town raining out into the rookie of the year

23:23 That'll be a game time

23:25 Hot ticket and it's it's funny. You know, we have Drake May number three overall pick

23:29 Patriots play I believe it's four out of the last five

23:35 Quarterbacks who went number one overall in the draft this year and it's Caleb Williams

23:42 Joe Burrow Trevor Lawrence and Kyler Murray and then the one they don't is Bryce young but instead they get the guy who went number

23:50 Two and probably is better in CJ Stroud. So a lot of these

23:54 Kind of young number one pick quarterbacks. I mean they played a lot of good quarterbacks last year. Yeah, just

24:01 Here they come again. It feels like so many like everyone has a good quarterback feels like nowadays, but

24:07 A lot of these top number one overall pick quarterbacks will be a good test kind of for the defense there as well

24:13 well, I I think the

24:15 The the texans game in particular is interesting because we've used the texans as kind of this blueprint

24:21 For the Patriots is kind of the blueprint for the rebuild

24:24 So it really is get ready to hear the phrase measuring stick game a lot this year

24:29 And it that is is among the top ones where all right

24:33 The goal is for them to be built like the texans. Well, let's see what the two look like side to side

24:37 And I think you're gonna hear a lot coming out of that game

24:40 Of you know how close the Patriots are aren't to being where they need to be

24:46 Yep

24:48 Yeah, definitely a lot of comparisons there. Even if drake may

24:51 Isn't on the field at week six

24:54 You can you can see the similarities kind of in the path that the texans took and what the Patriots

24:58 Want to model themselves afterwards, but then you know, london jet's home at tennessee

25:02 You said you did the five hardest games is tennessee the easiest game

25:08 Do you think if you had a look at this? I think we had that second. Arizona is an easier game. I think arizona

25:13 Well, because we factored everything in so you're you're later in the season. You're coming off the bye. Yeah, um, kyle

25:21 Let's be honest. We'll be healthy at that point. Um,

25:23 I mean we can we can do better than that

25:27 I mean we can we can do the exercise too. So we did it all we were just trying to find like where the bangles
