00:00Argentina's government decided to remove TeleZulu Channel from the programming grid
00:15of Open Digital Television.
00:19The United Nations denounced Israel's denial of access to the Rafah crossing point in Gaza.
00:27In Russia, President Vladimir Putin was running to officially take office as head of state
00:31for the next six years.
00:38Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from TeleZulu Studios in
00:42Havana, Cuba.
00:43We begin with the news.
00:44Argentina's government has decided to remove TeleZulu Channel from the programming grid
00:48of Open Digital Television.
00:50The measure, announced in a letter sent by the Comptroller of Public Television, Diego
00:54Xajer, invokes the power provided in Article 2.2 of the Cooperation Agreement signed on
01:00November 20, 2020.
01:03The media censorship directed against TeleZulu in Argentina represents a serious attack on
01:07the right to information, which limits access to decent voices, restricts the plurality
01:12of information, undermines the possibility of forming informed opinions and participating
01:17in public debate, in a scenario where diversity of opinion is fundamental to the functioning
01:21of the democratic society.
01:25TeleZulu's President Patricio Villegas denounced the censorship against this television channel
01:33applied by the government of the President of Argentina, Javier Mele, after he announced
01:37the elimination of its signal from the Open Digital Television grid.
01:43Patricio Villegas, President of TeleZulu, denounced the media censorship directed against
01:47TeleZulu in Argentina represents a serious attack on the right to information by limiting
01:51access to decent voices, restricts the plurality of information, undermines the possibility
01:56of forming informed opinions and participating in public debate, in a scenario where diversity
02:01of opinion is fundamental to the functioning of the democratic society.
02:06Villegas also warned that the human cost of the chainsaw that has cut pensions and retirement
02:11pensions, reduced public salaries, increased the poverty of millions of Argentine men and
02:16women, and threatens to extinguish Argentina's highly recognized public education.
02:21Now there is a worrisome blow against freedom of expression and plurality of voices, which
02:26paves a worrying step backwards in the path towards a society that builds its own criteria
02:31and sovereign thought.
02:32Those who wield speeches of freedom with their actions, which is what counts, cut that freedom
02:37to a project that builds sovereignty.
02:39The President of TeleZulu assured that we understand that a signal that smells and tastes
02:44like homeland is mortifying for them.
02:47The Macri government had already announced the agreement with the same backdrop and actions.
02:51Just as on that occasion, TeleZulu never went away, neither will they do it now.
02:56Patricia Villegas affirmed that those who carry out these actions only portray themselves
03:01and the new world that persists and advances in dignity today in Palestine, Nicaragua,
03:06Bolivia, Cuba and Venezuela observe them in their low-billed work and with consequences
03:10not yet calculated.
03:12Villegas also expressed while they dedicate themselves to wreak havoc, we will continue
03:17to build this signal that unites us because it allows us to recognize each other from
03:22Tierra del Fuego to Mexico and we will be more and more the signal of the Global South.
03:28At the end, Patricia Villegas reaffirmed that our multiplatform will continue to build a
03:32symphony of voices through its various channels and platforms, connecting people in the defense
03:36of the right to information as a pillar of freer and fairer societies.
03:51During a transmission of his program with Maduro Mas, the Venezuelan president, Nicolas
03:55Maduro assures that the Argentine president, Javier Mele, will not be able to censor TeleZul.
04:02Mele is afraid, Mele is afraid, he is afraid of TeleZul, Mele is afraid, TeleZul is going
04:09to pull your legs out, also, Mele, the people are going to see TeleZul through all the social
04:14networks, you won't be able to censor TeleZul, TeleZul is going to be more powerful than
04:20you, Mele, rest assured, you are afraid, Mele, afraid of the truth of the people.
04:27Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro emphasized that the plan of the Seven Transformation
04:30– Seventies – constitutes the line of work that will drive the people's will until
04:352030.
04:36The Venezuelan president held a meeting on Monday with governors and other representatives
04:39of the One for Ten Good governance plan.
04:42During his speech, President Maduro asserted that the Seventies represent a political and
04:46economic project that will go beyond 2030.
04:49The president also highlighted that Venezuelans are the ones who give constant lessons to
04:53the national executive on how to work for the growth of the nation.
05:05We are gathering strength, not only for a victory this 2024.
05:12We are building the moral strength, the ideas, for what is here.
05:22The project of the great transformations, Seventy, the plan of the homeland, of the
05:26seven great transformations, Seventy, that Venezuela needs and that we are going to do
05:36and that only we can do.
05:39In Haiti, the Parents Association has called on the Presidential Transitional Council to
05:43reopen 900 schools that have been closed amid the ongoing crisis of violence in the Caribbean
05:48country.
05:49In a statement, the organization stressed the need to reopen the institutions in order
05:52to restore the academic course of students affected by the wave of violence in the country
05:57led by a coalition of gangs.
05:58The Haitian Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training traditionally condemned
06:04the looting and burning of schools and universities by armed groups.
06:08It also called for unity to protect educational institutions, reiterating that children's
06:12right to education must be guaranteed.

07:07Brazilian President Lula Silva sent to Congress a draft legislative decree establishing a
07:11public calamity in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
07:14The death toll after heavy rains in the state rose to 85.
07:17Authorities also reported several people missing and considered damage to infrastructures.
07:21The executive wants Parliament to authorize the transfer of resources to the regions hit
07:26by the strong storms, without subjecting it to compliance with fiscal rules.
07:31Measures include an external credit and the suspension of the monthly payment of its debt
07:35obligations, among other incentives.
07:45In the Dominican Republic, reports show a 58% reduction in forest fires in the first
07:49four months of this year.
07:51The National Fire Management Program of the Dominican Ministry of Environment and Natural
07:54Resources reported that the decrease in fires is due to the rains and the increase in work
07:59to control the flames.
08:01Authorities said that rainfall was more frequent in the year 2023.
08:06In addition, more than 150 workers and citizens have planted 15,000 plants in the affected
08:12areas to help restore flora and fauna.
08:21Meanwhile in Afghanistan, at least 14 people were reported dead due to flooding in the
08:25country during the last three days.
08:27According to the Ministry of State for Disaster Management Affairs, several missing persons
08:31were also reported.
08:32However, the exact number is still unknown.
08:34As a result of the rainfall, 14 provinces were affected, 140 houses were totally or
08:38partially destroyed, and more than 2,000 head of cattle were lost.
08:43The country has suffered heavy snowfalls, rains, and flash floods in recent months,
08:47which have caused the deaths of more than 130 people and the destruction of thousands
08:51of houses.
09:15The United Nations denounced Israel's denial of access to the Rafah crossing point in Gaza.
09:20The multilateral body joins Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Palestine, Belgium, and other
09:24governments and organizations denouncing Zionist operations at the current Shalom crossing.
09:29Israel has completely blocked the entry of humanitarian aid, as denounced earlier by
09:33several organizations that claim that Tel Aviv's real intention is to continue starving
09:37thousands of Palestinians.
09:38With timid protests from its allies in Washington and Paris, the Zionist government ceased the
09:43border crossing in the midst of an unfinished negotiation process.
09:51In Palestine, thousands of people flee East Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip after the
09:54Israeli government ordered the evacuation following its intentions to invade the city.
09:59The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, claimed in a statement that the Tel Aviv regime
10:02is preparing a large-scale ground offensive without considering the humanitarian catastrophe.
10:07The Palestinian refugees forcibly left their camps to head towards central and western
10:11Rafah, with intentions to go to western Hanjunis and northern Deir al-Bala.
10:16Hamas warned that preparation for Israel's ground offensive in Rafah neglects the fate
10:20of hostages held captive in the territory and threatening hundreds of thousands of civilians.
10:28The Israeli government says it will continue its invasion of the Gaza Strip despite pressure
10:34from international bodies and the international community.
10:38Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed not to bow to international pressure
10:42to end the siege of the Gaza Strip.
10:44Netanyahu reiterated that no decision from any international forum would stop the incursion
10:49into Rafah and that he would continue the fight despite the lack of support from his
10:53allies, with more than 34,000 Palestinians killed.
10:57The international community and Israel's main ally have called for a slowdown or even
11:02a halt to the offensive, but Netanyahu insists the fighting will continue.
11:08The regime must accept the ceasefire agreement, otherwise the families of the prisoners will
11:17burn Israel.
11:18In the United Kingdom, students at the University of Oxford and Cambridge joined demonstrations
11:24in support of the Palestinian cause.
11:26Students from both British universities joined the pro-Palestinian protest setting up tents
11:29on the campuses of the institutions in front of the Pitt Rivers Museum.
11:34These after the London government approved a new aid package to Israel and started the
11:37Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip.
11:39In turn, the organizers sent to the university authorities a list of six demands, among them
11:44the boycott of the Israeli genocide, the end of the cooperation with the important Barclays
11:48Bank and the aid to the reconstruction of Gaza, among others.

12:46Russian President Putin was sworn in to officially take office as head of state for the next
12:51six years.
12:52During his speech at the inauguration ceremony, President Putin did not hint who his candidate
12:56to prime minister might be.
12:58According to the Russian legislation, the head of state has until May 20 to propose
13:02to the state Duma a name to occupy this position.
13:05Putin focused his speech on issues related to his country's ability to succeed in any
13:09challenge.
13:10He highlighted his nation's ability to overcome current obstacles and his willingness to contribute
13:14to the construction of a new world scenario.
13:21Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Russia is open to Western Ukraine negotiations
13:26based on reality and will not participate in any event promoting Vladimir Zelensky's
13:30so-called peace formula.
13:32Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow is open to negotiations based
13:36on reality and not to those planned by the Conference of Western Countries to be held
13:40in Switzerland.
13:41Lavrov said that the leaders of Ukraine, the United States and Europe are not ready for
13:46a decent discussion and are playing a parody of negotiations in the form of a meeting.
13:51Lavrov further claimed that the Swiss Confederation is no longer a neutral state because it is
13:56in the vanguard of those who support and arm the regime in Kiev.
14:06China's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lin Yan said on Monday that China urged the Philippines
14:10to respect the numeral 400 disputes over the Rhine-Irish.
14:14In this way, the Spokesman insisted that the Philippines must respect previous commitments
14:17to maintain peace in the waters of this reef.
14:19In recent statements by Philippine National Security Advisor Eduardo Año, Defense Secretary
14:24Gilberto Teodoro and the Department of Foreign Affairs have denied any agreement with China
14:29despite the fact that early on 2024, the Chinese side and the Philippine side agreed on a new
14:33model for resupply missions concerning the Rhine-Irish Reef after multiple rounds of
14:40discussions.
14:46Inter-community clashes in the Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan left at least
14:5018 people killed and eight others injured.
14:53Two neighboring communities accused each other of aggressions.
14:56The Roma Mayor-Commissioner armed youth, most of them from Twig County, carried out an attack
15:02over the weekend that killed nine people.
15:05Previously, the regional authorities reported that youth from Abyei were responsible for
15:09various damages and robberies, although South Sudan was experiencing a period of relative
15:13calm.
15:14Inter-community conflicts are increasing.
15:21In Togo, President Faure Nassingbe promoted a constitutional reform that changes the presidential
15:26system to a parliamentary one.
15:28The opposition accuses him of manipulating the laws in his favor.
15:32The head of state enacted this reform one week after his party's electoral victory,
15:36which could win 108 of the 113 seats in dispute.
15:40This controversial reform, approved on March 19, has been harshly criticized because it
15:45eliminates the possibility for the Togolese people to vote directly for their president,
15:50who will now be elected by the National Assembly, meaning that the president could remain in
15:54power indefinitely.
16:02Chadians are voting to put an end to three years of military rule in a presidential election
16:06that boils down to a non-precedented duel between the head of the junta and the Chadian
16:10prime minister.
16:14This is unprecedented.
16:15We really want change.
16:17Chadians want change, and we've come out en masse to make our voices heard, so that this
16:21change really is a truth and a reality.
16:23That's what we want, what all Chadians want.
16:26This has never happened before.
16:27Yes, before, there wasn't this enthusiasm in front of the polling stations.
16:32Today, everyone has come out and we are very proud, very happy.
16:36We really want this change.
16:40This is my first time voting in peace and quiet.
16:44This time, I can see that this election is free and transparent.
16:50I'm really at ease.
16:53I see all the Chadians are happy to come and do their duty.
16:57Coding Next technologies are being implemented for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for it to
17:02be more inclusive.
17:03Let's see all the details in the following work.
17:09Vibrating waistcoats and audio description will be present at the Olympics, enabling
17:14hearing and visually impaired supporters to live up this unique experience.
17:19Personally, and I think collectively, it does us good to be able to be at the heart of the
17:24event with the atmosphere like everyone else rather than being at home, and with everything
17:30that the Olympic and Paralympic Games are preparing for.
17:33This kind of approach is very appealing to us because we really feel part of the same
17:37French sporting family.
17:41Those state-of-the-art devices debunk the myth the deaf cannot attend a sports stadium
17:46as they can feel everything on the games by means of their waistcoats, which picked up
17:51sound waves and turned them into vibrations immediately sent to their backs.
17:57I can follow all these vibrations, all this movement and in fact I feel there's a link.
18:02I can't hear, but I can feel the vibrations.
18:06For me, it's perfect.
18:09For me, I can understand it.
18:11It's a superb adaptation.
18:14These waistcoats should be everywhere.
18:17If only for concerts or a film, a film in the cinema, that would be idyllic, that would
18:21be great.
18:23After that, I don't know, a football match, a basketball match.
18:28I need to feel those vibrations.
18:31I need someone to translate that sound for me.
18:34For me, it's comfortable.
18:37So I see that there are different things, I feel them and in fact, if I didn't have
18:41this waistcoat, it would be complicated.
18:45The waistcoats stem from Soundspiration Technologies' SoundX company which aims at designing, developing
18:52and deploying worldwide solutions for more inclusiveness.
18:56Its CEO, Daniela Garcia, describes thoroughly such tech.
19:01We've developed this system that you wear like a rucksack.
19:06So I strap it on and when it comes into contact with my back, I feel vibrations, thanks to
19:11a mobile application that is linked to this backpack, which can rotate on the bottom and
19:15which detects what is happening around me and sends me this sound signal that translates
19:19into vibrations for me.
19:23Over 60 blind people willing to be part of the audience at the Olympic Games will count
19:28on microphones connected to audio boxes to listen to interpreters narrating everything
19:33to be happened there.
19:35During the Games, we will also be offering 70 visually impaired people the chance to
19:40attend sessions using an audio description system and then we're going to continue this
19:44type of operation anyway.
19:46We're also thinking about trying to get the other partners of the Games involved so that
19:50we can roll out this type of scheme, which requires funding, to a slightly greater extent.
19:56The party's organizing committee includes people with special needs by providing these
20:00advanced devices at the Olympic Games, which will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
20:09We are from the end of this news brief.
