00:00:48 Welcome back, everyone, to Calgary in the Winsport Arena.
00:00:51 The final competition, the final event of the day
00:00:54 has moved up to minus 33 now in the weather report.
00:00:57 Caitlin Osmond, myself, Ted Barton here,
00:00:59 the Men's Short Program.
00:01:01 You know, we've talked about this through the weekend
00:01:04 so far.
00:01:06 Anything, anyone.
00:01:07 Really, it is a full open field.
00:01:10 The reigning Canadian champion is not here.
00:01:12 He retired last year, Mr. Kikimessing.
00:01:15 And it's really anyone's game to take that again.
00:01:18 There's a strong field, a lot of strong outings
00:01:20 in the practices.
00:01:21 And even though it's wide open, there
00:01:23 are people to look out for.
00:01:25 So of course, there's Roman Sadowski,
00:01:27 who is finally able to compete this year,
00:01:29 but is such a wild card because we haven't seen him.
00:01:32 And then, of course, Wesley Chu, who I find he's
00:01:35 really impressive this year, really grown as a skater,
00:01:38 really improved his skating skills
00:01:39 and mixing in that artistry in his skating.
00:01:41 And then Conrad and Steven Gogolev,
00:01:44 who really have these strong, powerful jumps.
00:01:47 And then it's a matter of doing them
00:01:49 and then also adding in the extra stuff.
00:01:50 And you have a little wild card with both Matthew Newnham,
00:01:53 of course, and Alexa Rakic, who have really improved.
00:01:55 Their juniors are moving up, of course, even last season.
00:01:59 But you have to give the lead a little bit to Roman
00:02:01 because of his experience and his quality of skating.
00:02:04 But he needs to skate clean because there's
00:02:06 a lot of young men behind him who can deliver those quads,
00:02:09 as well.
00:02:10 So it's going to be so interesting to see.
00:02:13 Roman's program, we saw that this morning, so interesting,
00:02:16 so dramatic.
00:02:17 So there's a little bit of an edge on that.
00:02:19 Of course.
00:02:20 And he's such an incredible skater,
00:02:22 one of the fastest spinners I've ever seen in the world.
00:02:25 And he has that extra quality that you're looking for.
00:02:28 And that's a senior level skater.
00:02:29 And then it's the matter of doing the tricks
00:02:31 and not having the experience this year.
00:02:33 Yeah.
00:02:33 Well, a lot of these young men, they
00:02:35 can do the quads, the triple axles,
00:02:37 wonderful skating skills.
00:02:38 But a little unpredictable.
00:02:39 We don't know what's going to happen.
00:02:41 But we're going to find out because the Men's Short Program
00:02:43 here, the final event on this day, starts right now.

00:17:47 Not a bad skate for Ethan.
00:17:49 He's just proud to be here at this point.
00:17:51 He's already achieved his goal for the season.
00:17:54 And it had moments-- he's such a gorgeous skater who can carry
00:17:59 speed across the ice so effortlessly.
00:18:02 Unfortunately, the mistake on the Lutz--
00:18:05 apologies-- on the Lutz, turning it into a single,

00:18:15 Oh, he rotates so fast.
00:18:17 He has a beautiful triple axel.
00:18:19 Not shown today, but he can do an amazing triple axel.
00:18:22 He has very high jumps.
00:18:25 He always reminds me of Von Shapiro when he skates,
00:18:27 especially in the jumping passes.
00:18:31 And this season, he's worked really hard on controlling his
00:18:34 energy throughout the program, worked really hard on improving
00:18:38 his spins, because, well, he loves jumping.
00:18:40 Yeah.

00:19:46 He said he started in hockey, as many boys do, but he loves jumping.
00:19:51 And you can see it.

00:24:49 Wonderful posture as well.
00:24:51 Great posture, great speed and flow across the ice.
00:24:54 And really strong with the attention to detail.
00:24:57 You could see in his spins that he really wanted to get those extra levels.
00:25:01 Even when there was a little wobble on the camel spin,
00:25:05 he really focused on holding the position.
00:25:08 And, you know, maybe some work on detail with the, with the arms
00:25:13 and some of the other choreographic or choreography in the program,
00:25:17 but really well organized.
00:25:20 Very well organized and very excited.
00:25:25 He says he just skates.
00:25:27 He just loves to be on the ice.
00:25:29 No other sports, just this.
00:25:32 And he said he got into skating first because his parents put him into skating,
00:25:38 so he knew how, but then he wanted to beat his brother.
00:25:41 So he kept at it.
00:25:44 Always the motivation.
00:25:45 I understand fully.
00:25:48 I'm pretty sure I had the same motivation.
00:25:51 Here you see his really great knee bend on these turns.
00:25:57 And then here on the triple lutz.
00:26:00 Wanting to put the hand down, but forcing himself not to.
00:26:04 And then holding the landing positions.
00:26:07 And then this beautiful triple toe, lots of height in the air.
00:26:11 So the minute he do it, he did it, that he must be working on quad toe.
00:26:15 Beautiful landing position as well.
00:26:16 Good sit, sit position.
00:26:18 That looks like Denis Veselyev's spin, sit spin.
00:26:22 So, so difficult to do that position without grabbing your own foot,
00:26:26 which you'll see most skaters do.
00:26:29 So just adding his own little variations into these movements.
00:26:33 And then here, nice and high on the double axel.
00:26:36 You can see that his back never bends forward and always staying perfectly straight.
00:26:41 Using the strength.
00:26:43 There's the little wobble at the beginning of the camel spin and just scrambling to squeeze and hold on to the very, very end.
00:26:48 And then making sure the knee is well above the hip on that position.
00:26:56 You know, this, this skater would be wonderful to work with because he has the core strength.
00:27:02 He's got great lift in the air.
00:27:04 He rotates fast.
00:27:05 He's got good spin position.
00:27:06 Yeah.
00:27:07 More speed is needed.

00:31:00 I'd climb every mountain and swim every ocean. Cause I need you to see that you are the reason.
00:31:26 Well, as far as the jumping go, that's a sort of a nightmare scenario, Caitlin, but let's get past that for a second.
00:31:32 Really, really nice lift on his jumps and the flying sits, but beautiful spin positions and speed.
00:31:37 Great control on the spins. You can see his flexibility and his strength in those positions.
00:31:44 And overall, a beautiful performance in the way he can use his edges throughout the step sequence, carry speed, move his arms.
00:31:54 He does look quite nervous though, off the top of the program.
00:31:57 Yeah, you mentioned that off air. Does he look nervous to you? I said, yeah, I do.
00:32:00 And I think he was just a little bit, not a little bit. He was very tight on the taking off on the jumps and slow on the exit.
00:32:08 You know, he went down three times, but the rest of the qualities of the program are very nice.
00:32:12 They are very nice. And you can see that the energy put in to being trained.
00:32:17 And you see him look at his coach there and just say, I don't know. Yeah. Yeah.
00:32:25 I'm excited to see some of those reviews because they looked OK on the way up, just a little too powerful with the upper body.
00:32:32 And that comes with nerves and adrenaline and just want the desire to get it done.
00:32:37 You tend to muscle over technique. That is always a bit of a challenge.
00:32:45 Here are those really great edges off the start of the program, trying to get into the performance.
00:32:54 It was around here that I said he looked a little nervous. And then here's a look at that triple Lutz.
00:32:58 You can see the left arm really lifted into the air and it wasn't able to catch up.
00:33:04 And then again on this flip, it was a little better off the takeoff, but then it opened up a little too soon, actually.
00:33:11 Just had a little too much launch and wasn't able to control the landing.
00:33:16 But here's those strength on the spins and the flexibility and the way that he can go quickly into the illusion again here.
00:33:23 The flying set, lots of speed, completely low enough.
00:33:32 And then, of course, his last combination spin here. Finishing just in time for the music.
00:33:41 When you're a big jumper like he is, that the amount of time that's in the air exceeds the amount of time you need to rotate.
00:33:48 And the checkout changes. Do I open early? Do I open later?
00:33:52 You know, you want to equalize the distance across the ice, the time in the air and the amount of time you need for the rotation.
00:33:58 And it's just sort of a sense of time. -Exactly. And when you're at home in practice, sometimes it doesn't launch up as high as when you have that extra adrenaline and extra muscle power.
00:34:08 And next thing you know, you're jumping 10 times higher than you normally do. -Yeah, exactly.
00:34:13 You're just not expecting to be in the air for that long.
00:34:16 Patiently waiting for the scores. There they are.
00:34:21 Short program score, 45.71 for Antoine. And that will put him currently in third place.
00:34:30 It's tough, you know, when you lose those three jumps. He's a good skater and a really good spinner.
00:34:38 But those three jumps are really costly here tonight.
00:34:46 Quick flight. -Very quick flight. We have in ice resurfacing, and that is the former Canadian champion and junior world champion Nam Nguyen with his new figure.

01:32:49 Too bad about the triple flip, but that, for Alec,

01:56:31 Yeah, especially when you've done a good job. You want to say, "Well, what are you going to pay me for this job?"
01:56:35 "What are you going to pay me for this job?"
01:56:37 Well, you haven't done a, when you've done a poor job, you're going, "Okay, you know, I know I'm not going to get very much."
01:56:42 But right now, you're wondering, "How many points am I going to earn with that program?"
01:56:47 "Where will I be in the standings, shot at the podium at the end of this event?"
01:56:53 You'll be in the last group. That's always important, at least for the mindset of the skater.
01:56:58 So exciting seeing Matthew here. I trained with him for quite a while growing up,
01:57:10 and when I retired from competing, he was the height of up to my shoulder.
01:57:16 And then I came back and he's this.
01:57:19 There it is. 71.96 for Matthew Noonan from Alberta, Northwest Territories.
01:57:26 And Noonan, he is currently in third place.
01:57:29 But look at 74, 72, 71, 70. All very tight indeed.
01:57:34 As it was in the women's as well. It's going to come down, as it always does, usually.
01:57:39 The free program, our next competitor from British Columbia, Yukon section, 19-year-old Alexa Racket.
01:57:46 She was second at the challenge competition in December.
01:57:51 He's coached by Joanne McLeod.
01:57:55 He's choreographed in the short program by Mark Pillay, the great Canadian choreographer.
01:58:00 He'll skate the short program to biblical.

02:01:10 What an impressive performance by Alexa.
02:01:14 He's improved so much in the last year.
02:01:17 You can really see his dedication to gaining that speed throughout his program.
02:01:21 And the way he moves throughout the choreography, it's really effective.
02:01:26 And it really draws you into the performance to the point that I almost forgot that he made that mistake.
02:01:32 Yeah, you know, there's a couple things.
02:01:35 One, he is a skater that feels that music.
02:01:37 He is emotional himself, and he loves to perform.
02:01:40 He loves to move, and you can see that naturally.
02:01:42 And he connects to the music and the song and all of that.
02:01:45 The triple axel is not a riding edge, so he does release that edge and skids that takeoff.
02:01:50 And when it gets too big of a skid, it stops the momentum, loses the flow and the takeoff.
02:01:54 He's learned the quad toe, so that's good.
02:01:56 So we'll see.
02:01:58 Well, here you go.
02:02:00 This is the beginning of this choreography.
02:02:03 He does really connect with this music really well.
02:02:05 The way the arms just softly move, the attention to the detail on the toe point there and the stretched fingertips.
02:02:12 Here's a look at the quad toe.
02:02:14 He does a little walkthrough beforehand, and it made me nervous thinking he was walking through the quad toe.
02:02:17 But there you see he hangs on to it, getting plenty of fight.
02:02:22 And then here, that triple axel, just as you said, Ted, that skid really happened.
02:02:25 The foot almost started turning before he could leave the ice.
02:02:28 So it's hard to catch up in that moment.
02:02:32 He's done some great work on trying to get through to these spins.
02:02:34 All level fours minus the last spin.
02:02:38 Level four camel spins there.
02:02:42 And then here, really focused going into this last jumping pass.
02:02:46 A little bit slower on the landing of the flip, but he can really pull off that triple toe from anything.
02:02:52 Which is an amazing skill to have for the just-in-case moments when that flip doesn't come down the way that you're anticipating.
02:03:00 The just-in-case moments. That's good.
02:03:02 He's also a pretty nice spinner. He can speed up everything he needs to.
02:03:09 And he's certainly sped up his skating skills across the ice.
02:03:12 So his ice coverage significantly improved from last season.
02:03:15 No question that'll help him in the score.
02:03:18 Top score so far is 74.16.
02:03:21 So he would need at least that to take the lead.
02:03:25 But with that fall, we'll see.
02:03:27 But he has other qualities.
02:03:29 There are so many great qualities.
02:03:30 That quad toe, the triple flip, triple toe, the spins.
02:03:34 All of that adds up.
02:03:36 But a fall does too.
02:03:38 75.49. That is first for Aleksa Rakic at this point of the competition.
02:03:47 That's a good score.
02:03:49 But very close. Very, very close.
02:03:53 Aleksa, what's going on? What do you have next?
02:03:55 Please welcome your next skater.
02:03:59 Our next skater, well, we know him.
02:04:01 But we don't know much about him this year.
02:04:03 This is his first time out in Canada that we've seen him at this level.
02:04:06 24-year-old Roman Sadovsky from the York Region Skating Centre.
02:04:10 This is a phenomenal program. He is a phenomenal skater.
02:04:14 He's had some issues this year and hasn't been able to compete that much.
02:04:17 He's coached by Tracy Wayman and Gregor Fiddleposky.
02:04:21 And he's got choreography in the short program by Nory Fonch-Dubre,
02:04:23 the great ice dance coach in Samuel Schwinard.
02:04:27 Skating to Unconsciousness.

02:05:21 Mmm, made me wear a dead skin of ambivalence.
02:05:27 Dropping logic bombs like it's World War III.
02:05:33 You weigh me down as if there's nothing I can do.
02:05:39 No evidence of anger, no evidence of rage.
02:05:48 I'm gonna mind this mind, dive inside, terrified,
02:05:53 but I'm starting again.
02:05:58 You weigh me down, and now I'm really onto you.

02:06:42 No matter what it takes, no more for goodness sake.
02:06:50 I'm done with perfection, and the mess it makes.

02:07:15 Come to my senses, come to my senses.
02:07:22 [Music]
02:07:26 [Applause]
02:07:30 - An innovative program to unconscious. Challenges on the technical jumps.
02:07:37 Caitlin. - It's hard.
02:07:41 He has such incredible, incredible talent.
02:07:45 I've seen him do these jumps multiple, multiple times, and effortlessly.
02:07:51 But they just keep seeming to elude him in the competition.
02:07:54 - Well, and the muscle memory, of course, he's been off the ice for a lot this season.
02:08:00 And so the mileage and muscle memory is not there quite, especially under pressure.
02:08:04 Now, he may be able to do it in practice, but he hasn't been competing a lot.
02:08:07 So it's a new environment and new sensations and, I don't know, stresses, pressures, questions, whatever.
02:08:15 At least on this day, you know, he had mistakes in the jumps.
02:08:19 We'll see what happens with the free program.
02:08:20 What a beautiful skater, what a beautiful program.
02:08:23 - Exactly. And I can't imagine the first competition of the year being a national championship.
02:08:28 Skating in the last warm-up group. - I think he went to Europe.
02:08:30 I think he went to one just recently, a little while ago.
02:08:33 - Did I miss that? He was supposed to go to two, and he didn't make it to either.
02:08:37 This is his first competition.
02:08:39 The first competition there, his skates didn't show up.
02:08:42 It was a bad go, sent to another one.
02:08:45 And the flight got turned around, so he didn't make it.
02:08:48 But there's a look at that triple Lutz.
02:08:50 That was supposed to be his combination, the triple S, triple toe.
02:08:53 And then here, getting a double sow, double toe.
02:08:59 But unfortunately, you need to have a triple in the competition.
02:09:02 And then here, the triple axel got really swingy into the air, and he couldn't control the landing.
02:09:07 But he's always been an amazing spinner.
02:09:11 He's one of the best spinners in the entire world.
02:09:14 So many fantastic qualities.
02:09:19 And I know he's a fan favorite here.
02:09:22 A lot of people messaged me saying they were super excited to see Roman skate today.
02:09:26 So I hope he feels that and feels the love that everyone is still giving him.
02:09:32 - Yeah. He's still going to get a pretty good score because of his basic qualities.
02:09:37 And the spins, just amazing.
02:09:45 - The speed of that spin, the stretch, the turnout, the center.
02:09:49 And he seems to always keep the same speed on every position, if not increase.
02:09:54 - And that change combination spin at the end, he definitely increases per change of position.
02:10:05 - Yeah.
02:10:12 - Long time coach, Tracy William with him.
02:10:15 - Tracy, one of the youngest Canadian champions.
02:10:18 I think at the age of 13, she was the national senior champion.
02:10:22 - Such a great person to work with. - Oh, yeah.
02:10:27 - This is the most quiet I've ever seen her in a Kissing Car, though.
02:10:32 - What do you say?
02:10:35 There's nothing you can say that you're just filling air if you're talking
02:10:39 about the short program, because Roman's experience, he knows what he's supposed to do.
02:10:43 He knows what he did do.
02:10:45 - And now it's just to see where he will sit after the short program to see how he can fight in the free.
02:10:54 - He certainly has the weapons, that's not an issue.
02:10:57 But he'll need to bring it all. 68.29, that is sixth in the short program.
02:11:05 - As we take a look at the results, but it's really not that far, it was nine points.
02:11:10 Seven points behind Alexa Rakic at this point, but we've still got some skaters to come.
02:11:17 Steven Gogolev is up next. He represents Ontario.
02:11:21 He's 19 years old, out of the Grand Skating Club.
02:11:25 He's coached by Raphael Aradonian and also lead Barkel.
02:11:30 He's choreographed in the short by the great Shae-Lynn Bourne, 2003 World Ice Dance Champion with Victor Kratz.
02:11:37 Now doing incredible choreography around the world, skating to the sound of silence by Disturbed.

02:14:47 Well I'm fortunate on those jumping passes, but to look at his skating over the last number of years
02:14:56 and then to look at the performance that he showed tonight, choreography wise, he looked outstanding that way.
02:15:03 This is the best he's skated from choreography.
02:15:05 This is the best he's looked, yes.
02:15:06 Great job by Shalynne Bourne. I suspect that he's injured, we've heard something we don't know, we don't have all the details.
02:15:13 He's been really stretching his back over the warm up and then here you see again.
02:15:19 This is an athlete in a little bit of distress, this is not 100% healthy and so that obviously is going to have an impact technically.
02:15:26 Of course and you saw it especially at the end of the quad sal, he was not comfortable after that and then it was making it through until the end of the program at that point
02:15:35 and greatly appreciated for the audience trying to encourage him along the way.
02:15:40 Yeah, and I give him a lot of credit for the effort, but more credit for the choreography and his commitment to enter that element of skating which he has really lacked
02:15:52 and you can see it growing so once he gets healthy, we'll see a different Steven Gogolev and there are improvements, no question, Gaben.
02:16:02 Here you can see the stretch, the movement with his head and then here unfortunately on the quad toe, just the arms get a little, it was really quick off the take off.
02:16:14 So forcing it into a double and then here, rotated the quad sal and then took a couple seconds there to stand back up.
02:16:22 And then not quite in the right space to be able to get himself up into the air for that triple axel.
02:16:29 Hard enough when you're healthy.
02:16:31 Extremely difficult when you're healthy.
02:16:33 A lot of the times in competition, adrenaline takes over and you don't necessarily feel the pain, but if you are injured and you can feel it while you're competing, it's very distracting.
02:16:49 But he really pushed through until the end of that program.
02:16:55 And like you said, this is the, well, both of us have said, this is the most attention to detail in choreography that I've ever seen from him, even from his junior days.
02:17:05 He may not take that as sort of a consolation, but in the building of an outfit, this is an important improvement.
02:17:12 You know, bad day, injured, not feeling well, all of that.
02:17:16 But I was never, I was always wondering, would he ever begin to discover and explore the space around him with his choreography and his body?
02:17:24 We saw that tonight and that's very, very good news for his future once he gets himself healthy.
02:17:31 And we talked about changing coaches a lot.
02:17:33 Well, often you've seen a different coach in the Kiss and Cry with Stephen at every competition this season.
02:17:37 He's worked a lot more closely with Lee and Lee's been more consistent with him.
02:17:42 Yeah.
02:17:43 It comes in handy consistency.
02:17:49 And, you know, as a coach and parents and friends and family, your heart just sinks and you don't want the skaters to feel what they're feeling right at the moment.
02:17:59 Part of the process, 53.80, that is 11th in the short program.
02:18:04 This is not unfamiliar territory for him, but I think with this injury, it's going to be hard in the pre-program to come back if he skates.
02:18:10 We'll see.
02:18:13 Improvement has been made.
02:18:15 Needs that health to help technically.
02:18:20 Our next competitor represents British Columbia, Yukon, 18-year-old Wesley Chu out of the Gannat Skating Club.
02:18:25 Spoked by Keegan and Eileen Murphy.
02:18:28 Started skating at the age of four.
02:18:35 Got a quad toe and combo.
02:18:40 We'll see whether that materializes.
02:18:41 Triple axel as well.
02:18:42 He has the weapons and the performance.
02:18:44 He'll need it all right now as he'll skate the short program to Kissing You by Sam Smith.

02:21:45 Wesley Chu usually a double fist bump, a big smile.
02:21:50 >> More double fist bumps.
02:21:51 He's still going.
02:21:52 >> I know, going wild.
02:21:53 That was awesome.
02:21:54 What a great performance.
02:21:55 Clean, crisp, tidy.
02:21:58 >> Few standing ovations for Wesley and well deserved.
02:22:02 Such an incredible, solid program.
02:22:07 And I said it during his program, I'll say it again.
02:22:10 He's got the abilities that are so similar to that of Patrick Chan.
02:22:15 And you can see the detail in each step in the choreography to the stretch, to the emotion.
02:22:20 And then still able to get the hard tricks done.
02:22:23 >> Yeah.
02:22:24 He carries the skating skills that flow through the little hops and touch the boots and the little details that don't bring direct points, but they do impact the overall, obviously the skating skill program component mark.
02:22:37 >> Outstanding performance.
02:22:40 One that, well, obviously he's happy about, but he's deservedly happy about.
02:22:44 >> Yeah.
02:22:45 His best performance of his life at this moment in big competition.
02:22:49 >> Right off the top of the program there, you see the emotion and the connection to the music.
02:22:56 And then here, taking his time for this quad toe, but gets plenty of height in the air.
02:23:01 Quad toe, triple toe.
02:23:04 >> So much height even on the second triple toe there.
02:23:07 And then ending down the ice.
02:23:09 This is his only real mistake in the program, just skidded a little too much on the takeoff and then turned the almost step out into choreography.
02:23:18 And then here, beautiful triple lutz.
02:23:21 And you see the smile on his face right there.
02:23:23 >> Yeah, yeah.
02:23:26 And then he gained energy.
02:23:32 >> Really amazing performance.
02:23:34 See the stretch in the camel spin there.
02:23:38 Getting level four on each of his spins, except for that last change combination spin.
02:23:43 So, well, there's still room for improvement.
02:23:46 >> Well, he had a 2.5 point GOE score on the quad toe, triple toe.
02:23:51 That's huge.
02:23:52 >> Well, of course.
02:23:53 >> The total score of 16.14 for that one element to start the program.
02:23:57 >> It's not a bad way to start.
02:23:59 >> Yeah.
02:24:00 >> Fantastic performance.
02:24:05 That's all I can say about that.
02:24:07 >> And this is going to be interesting to get Conrad Orozal is next.
02:24:12 He will hear these scores.
02:24:14 Conrad certainly has the ability and the technical elements.
02:24:20 >> He said what got him into skating is a coach recommended that he tried figure skating.
02:24:26 I think that was a good recommendation.
02:24:28 >> A skating coach?
02:24:30 >> Yeah.
02:24:31 >> Come to the rink.
02:24:32 >> Come to the rink.
02:24:33 Let's try this.
02:24:34 >> Here's the scores.
02:24:36 88.98 for Wesley Chu as he clearly takes the lead in a big way.
02:24:44 There it is.
02:24:46 At least eight points over Alexa Rakic.
02:24:49 One skater to come, though.
02:24:51 Conrad Orozal so skilled.
02:24:53 So much ability.
02:24:55 Skates last.
02:24:56 Not easy.
02:24:58 The silver medalist from last season.
02:25:00 So he'll be looking to step one -- step higher on the podium.
02:25:05 But he's got some work to do.
02:25:07 First at the challenge event, coach by Ravi Walia, choreographed by Lance Vipon.
02:25:13 He'll skate.
02:25:15 Short program to the powerful music of Carmina Burana.

02:28:19 [ Applause ]
02:28:27 You can see the disbelief on his face.
02:28:29 He's been skating so incredibly well since he's gotten here in Calgary.
02:28:35 But such a tough position to skate.
02:28:37 Last in the short program right after hearing an amazing score.
02:28:42 >> Yeah, that big score for Wesley Chu.
02:28:44 And he may not have thought of that or expected that.
02:28:48 >> Or how do you even prepare for that?
02:28:50 >> No, you can't.
02:28:51 We talked about that.
02:28:52 I mean, you can simulate a skate, but you can't simulate hearing a real score in front of you.
02:28:56 And that sometimes can impact your thought, oh, I'm going to need to --
02:29:01 you just need to skate what you skate.
02:29:03 But, well.
02:29:09 >> You can see the disappointment in him there.
02:29:12 >> Yeah.
02:29:16 >> Oh, Robbie actually beat him to the kiss and cry.
02:29:17 >> Yeah.
02:29:18 >> That's a first.
02:29:19 [ Laughter ]
02:29:21 >> Well, let's take a look at some of these elements.
02:29:25 Great into the performance here at the beginning of the program.
02:29:27 He's worked so hard on adding that aspect to his skating.
02:29:32 And then here he has such big entrances into his quads.
02:29:36 The arm just pulled a little bit and he turned it into a triple salchow, triple toe.
02:29:42 But here's where it gets tricky.
02:29:44 So planned quad toe.
02:29:45 You can see the feet get a little too far ahead.
02:29:47 And it turns into a triple, which is a repeated element.
02:29:51 Which becomes invalid into the program.
02:29:53 >> So does the single axel.
02:29:55 >> And the singled axel.
02:29:56 So two invalid elements in a short program.
02:30:04 It's really tough.
02:30:05 It's a tough place to be.
02:30:06 He's never been in this position before to skate.
02:30:10 The closest he's gone is after coming second last year in the short program.
02:30:14 And then maintaining that in the free.
02:30:19 >> But coming in to some degree as perhaps the heir apparent.
02:30:24 But you had to earn it.
02:30:27 We talked about this.
02:30:28 We didn't know what was going to happen.
02:30:30 You know, this was an open field because they're all capable.
02:30:33 But who would produce on the night tonight at least Wesley Chu.
02:30:37 >> There's a little bit of a toss of the dice because of that talent.
02:30:40 But also the unpredictability.
02:30:42 And so many people wanting to step up to that world to take the stage.
02:30:47 And sometimes we've talked about it that the desire can sometimes be too much.
02:30:53 >> Yeah, the desire changes your timing.
02:30:55 Changes your psychological feel as well.
02:30:58 You have to park all the things you can't -- that can't help you when you step on the ice.
02:31:04 And just focus on that.
02:31:05 But we're human.
02:31:06 And so you get affected.
02:31:10 >> You can see the emotion in Conrad there.
02:31:12 He's such a powerful jumper and quick to rotate.
02:31:17 And just --
02:31:19 >> 61.72.
02:31:22 That is 10th in the short program.
02:31:24 We have seen a lot of movement last season in the senior.
02:31:28 So there is hope there because he has the ability and he has the weapons.
02:31:31 But, you know, how far off the podium is he?
02:31:35 Well, he's 13 points.
02:31:36 But he's got quads.
02:31:37 He's got triple axles.
02:31:38 Anthony doesn't.
02:31:39 So there's a possibility here he can climb back up.
02:31:42 How far?
02:31:43 We'll find out tomorrow.
02:31:45 >> That's a tomorrow question.
02:31:46 >> Yeah.
02:31:47 There's nothing set here.
02:31:48 Yes, we've got the 1, 2, 3.
02:31:50 But lots can happen.
02:31:51 Wesley Chu, Alexa Rakic, and Anthony Paradis.
02:31:55 You would not have guessed that podium.
02:31:58 >> It's really remarkable.
02:32:00 >> Yeah.
02:32:01 Or not the podium, but those three on the top.
02:32:04 Maybe Wesley, obviously, he's been up there.
02:32:06 But for Alexa and Anthony Paradis, I mean, wow.
02:32:10 >> And Mikhail sitting right there.
02:32:11 >> Yes, Mikhail as well.
02:32:13 So there you go.
02:32:14 Interesting indeed.
02:32:15 Full day of competition tomorrow.
02:32:17 Let's take a look at the schedule here.
02:32:18 We will start tomorrow local time here in Calgary at 10 a.m.

02:32:24 That will be followed by the senior free dance at 13.15, 1.15 in the afternoon.
