00:00:00 to deep field and it's wonderful to see that it goes all the way down to 11th place. 11th place
00:00:05 does not mean bad it just means 11th best in Canada and that is something really proud to say.
00:00:12 Taking a look here at Charlie and Luke Anderson
00:00:18 and this is their twiddle sequence correct? Yes those are twizzles or twiddles as my iPhone likes
00:00:25 to auto-correct it too which I don't know which one I like better maybe both. Here are another
00:00:29 set of twiddles actually twizzles so you'll notice that some teams like to have their leg out in the
00:00:36 first one there has to be a leg feature so what are they doing to make the lower half of the body
00:00:41 more difficult there has to be an arm feature so you'll see some teams twizzling with their arms in
00:00:47 front of them or maybe above their head or constantly moving and then there's a pattern
00:00:51 feature so that's doing a third twizzle or crisscrossing twizzles that's a little bit more
00:00:55 rare the more common choice for that pattern requirement is a third twizzle because it also
00:01:01 is exciting for the audience to see boom one two and then three to round it off so that's
00:01:07 the majority of what we'll be seeing there's only three teams in this in this first warm-up but
00:01:13 again there's so much great talent here I am very enthused. I can tell. Can you tell me I have a
00:01:24 question there are so many it seems choreo elements in the free dance and the choreo elements of
00:01:30 course only given a level one automatically so how did the teams do or sorry no level on the
00:01:37 choreo elements how did the teams get more points how did they advance these elements to make them
00:01:42 stand out from the rest? Right that's a wonderful question so the choreographic element is something
00:01:47 that is also new well not new but indicative of the free dance so they can choose up to three
00:01:54 choreographic elements that are only judged on their grade of execution so the point of those
00:02:00 things is to be musical it's to be expressive it's to move the narrative forward with the story
00:02:07 and that is all that they're judged on so those can be slides turns a series of jumps
00:02:14 audiences recognize the choreo step sequence going from boards to boards most commonly through the
00:02:19 middle axis of the ice some people even touching the boards so that's the purpose of those and I
00:02:25 will definitely point out the spectacular ones. You'll tell us when you see them. Oh yeah.
00:02:31 Getting ready to kick off this senior dance free dance
00:02:40 Final moments here. People seem to be still coming down from that
00:02:46 women's event that finished just minutes ago.
00:02:49 Our first competitors representing Ontario Charlie Anderson and Luke Anderson
00:02:56 they're coached by Scott Moyer, Adrienne Diaz, Madison Hubboldt, Kara Moyer and Sherry Moyer
00:03:02 they will skate today to waterways and I won't give up choreography by Sherry Moyer.

00:07:21 Such a nice ovation from the crowd for Charlie and Luke. This was a really nice free dance that I felt was
00:07:29 very appropriate for their ability. You know we will be seeing more difficult things later on
00:07:36 but what they did they did well
00:07:39 and especially when the second piece of music came in I felt like it started to carry them
00:07:47 more it gave them a little bit more lift and more power and that's the beauty of music. You know
00:07:55 it's it can really assist in such a beautiful performance you know there are sometimes when
00:08:02 you're watching a program and everything melts away you can't even I couldn't even tell you what
00:08:08 music it was because I was so entranced by what was happening on the ice and then there are some
00:08:12 programs that really are carried by the piece of music and this is what I felt for that second
00:08:18 piece for Charlie and Luke. I thought it was really well choreographed to suit the strengths that they
00:08:25 have right now. Yes Charlie is a double discipline skater she's on Ice Ignite synchronized team
00:08:34 so pulling a double shift they look pleased. So she's been competing since Wednesday.
00:08:43 Big week for Charlie. We saw Luke on practice by himself never missing a moment to feel the ice
00:08:51 and feel the space you know for some of these athletes skating in a big arena like this is
00:08:58 totally new and there's always going to be that first time when it's like whoa
00:09:02 we're in the big leagues now. This was a beautiful stationary lift right at the beginning of the
00:09:09 program. Positions can be more developed by Charlie. You want to make it look effortless.
00:09:19 I wrote this down very nice choreo spin
00:09:22 so that is an element not meant to be graded by its difficulty and a nice dance spin. I love to
00:09:32 see a connection mid element and you can see maybe her toe could be more turned out maybe
00:09:38 there's more stretch through her arms and upper body as well as with Luke's. You know sometimes
00:09:46 the man often in the supporting position feels like that is their only role and it is not.
00:09:51 They absolutely can shine even in the more basic positions.
00:09:55 Twizzles started well here long edge in the middle to catch that music that did cut their
00:10:09 speed a little bit. You can see Luke's balance check there in the second one. They received
00:10:16 level three and level two for that so we don't see any level fours on the score sheet except for
00:10:23 a dance spin and their lifts so their twizzles their one foot section their footwork all getting
00:10:30 lower levels which means those are in development. I would say in dance at the moment the lifts and
00:10:42 spin are the easier elements to achieve a level four on and those are best delineated by their
00:10:49 GOE between teams the footwork and the one foot section is really where you're gonna see the team
00:10:54 separate themselves. Free dance score for Charlie and Luke 73.84 the total score of 118.07.
00:11:05 Little fist bump from Charlie it looks like this is a win for this team today.
00:11:10 Our next skaters representing Alberta Northwest Territories in Nunavut
00:11:18 Alyssa Robinson and Jacob Porch. They're coached by Scott Moyer, Madison Hubbell and Adrienne Diaz.
00:11:25 They will skate today to Trauma and Bird Set Free choreographed by Scott Moyer and Sherry Moyer.

00:15:50 We are clapping for this team. What an emotional free dance for Melissa and Jacob.
00:16:00 [Music]
00:16:02 So emotional from the beginning to the end. I loved at the beginning the choreographed breath, choreographed or maybe not breath that they took and synced together.
00:16:14 I felt their connection and their support of each other throughout from the beginning to the end.
00:16:24 Sometimes you see life unfold out there on the ice and it's more than a sport. It's more than an athletic performance. It is their lives.
00:16:46 It is putting everything that you are and everything that you've been through on the ice for yourself and for your partner and for your team.
00:16:58 And we are the privileged ones that get a peek at what that is like.
00:17:06 And you know it as audience members, we don't see what these humans go through in their everyday life and the rises and falls that take place in their life to lead them to these big moments.
00:17:18 We are just privy to this, what we see here, but so much deeper when we recognize what happens in all those in-between little moments.
00:17:30 This was so special. Jacob Hortz experiencing incredible loss this season.
00:17:42 But you know at the end of the day we are here to commentate about figure skating and this was so special, Kirsten. I did not see a step out of line.
00:18:00 Look at this one foot section. Even the heads were perfectly matched. This curve lift, incredibly difficult on one hand with musical accents.
00:18:10 Combo so strong of Jacob to take that deep curve. Everything was so beautiful.
00:18:18 Look at this, their choreographic slide in a split. That is so hard and made to look effortless.
00:18:28 Their scorecard is looking really strong. Level twos on their one foot section but level three and level two on their serpentine step.
00:18:40 It was so matched. When you skate for something more, Kirsten, the technique seems to be inconsequential and the things just happen.
00:18:58 It feels like they are skating through a divine power. Even though this team is skating early in the competition.
00:19:12 I hope that the people watching can really appreciate just how magnificent this was. Choreo slide with a lift built in but so beautifully choreographed.
00:19:30 I thought the movement quality was so great when they connected. We saw it in their whole body.
00:19:38 Free dance score for Alyssa and Jacob, 95.96. That is first in the free dance with a total score of 157.57.
00:19:48 Currently in first place. So special. I will remember that.
00:19:58 Our next skaters representing Quebec.
00:20:08 They are coached by Patrice, Benjamin, Marie, they will skate to wood kid.

00:24:28 [Applause]
00:24:30 They laid it all on the line, Kirsten, Sandrine and Quentin. First year senior at the Canadian Championships.
00:24:40 They gave it their all. As you mentioned it was high energy throughout and very demanding.
00:24:48 Oh yeah, that is a very intense type of music and as they grow they will learn where their natural styles are.
00:24:58 I love the intensity of it. I felt like it was a lot to carry through for four minutes.
00:25:04 They are new here and that is okay. I think this will definitely serve them in the future and continue to be part of their learning process.
00:25:18 I think the benchmark in junior and senior is so different. This team on the podium at the National Championships in junior last year
00:25:29 and now have stepped into senior which comes with its own list of challenges that are so different than they would have experienced at the junior level.
00:25:37 Absolutely, that is a really great point. What we are looking for here is different than what we were a couple days ago during the junior dance.
00:25:47 Myfran is looking like she is saying, "You know what, you did it. Enough for today."
00:25:53 That is all you can ask for is what you do in practice. Sometimes that is exactly what you are capable of that day.
00:26:02 They still have a lot of great things to be proud of, especially at this competition.
00:26:07 Some really super elements in that program. I think when I was watching I was getting that it was feeling like elements in a program
00:26:17 and I wasn't as captivated in the story that they were telling as I was perhaps in the program prior.
00:26:26 Both such capable skaters and they are young. They are 19 and 20. Their career is just beginning.
00:26:36 One foot section clocking in at both a level three. So they have got the goods.
00:26:42 I think I am looking forward to a little bit more depth in their emotional commitment to each other.
00:26:49 This, their twizzle sequence. 4-4 for that. So it is clear to see why they have risen to the top at the junior level.
00:26:59 Training at the Ice Academy of Montreal surrounded by some of the best ice dancers in the world.
00:27:06 And hey, there is a lift that looks familiar. Very difficult and I can tell you that for a fact.
00:27:14 Stationary lift. Lots of balance. Super strength required on both partners.
00:27:21 This change of pose lift. Not as difficult as we will see or have seen. But that is okay.
00:27:29 This was their choreographic slide. I found myself wondering is this adding to the program at that moment on two knees.
00:27:42 And I am not sure. That is okay. If it makes perfect sense to them, that is fine.
00:27:48 I will never know the intention of the choreography. But here as well with the whacking.
00:27:53 Very difficult dance style made popular by black queer artists in New York.
00:28:00 So I wonder what that, how that is being utilized in this wood kid program intentionally.
00:28:07 I am not sure. But there are so many great things in this program. And I am excited to see where they grow.
00:28:15 Free dance score for Sandrine and Quentin 92.9. That is second in the free for a total score of 154.81.
00:28:24 They are currently in second place. A growing year for this team.
00:28:29 Sure. And they skated it well. And that is the ultimate joy I think as a Canadian.
00:28:39 That is it for the first group. We will take a short break to resurface the ice and we will be back for the final eight free dances.
00:28:48 We are back to two groups. Caitlin is excited. We will see you in a few minutes. Don't go anywhere.
00:29:07 How are we doing today? How are we doing today everybody? There we go.
00:29:19 The louder you are the higher chance you get to see your skate. Give it as much of your beat. Give it as loud as you can. There we go. Here we go. Here we go.
00:29:37 That is great. One more time. Ready.
00:29:50 I see you guys. I see you guys. It is a party over there. It is a party.
00:30:11 Sorry. Let me try it one more time. Here we go. A little bit closer. And hop.
00:30:24 Oh yeah. There we go. Ready. Hop.
00:30:39 Oh. You guys are over there. Okay. Ready. Hop.
00:30:54 A little bit closer. Louder.
00:31:09 You guys are over there. Ready. Hop.
00:31:18 That was a great one. Okay. Here we go. Right here. Right here.
00:31:30 All right. Here we go. You guys are pretty quiet. I don't like this. I am not a fan. You guys are way louder than this.
00:31:37 You guys are pretty.
00:31:52 There we go. There you go.
00:31:59 Here we go. Last race.
00:32:04 Okay. Here is Mike. Let me hear it.
00:32:11 Last race. Here we go.
00:32:21 My lucky friend.
00:32:40 Okay. I see you guys. I see you guys. I see you guys. Ready. Three, two, one. Hop.
00:32:47 Oh, good job. Okay. I got to my final one. Whoever is the loudest gets the final t-shirt.
00:33:13 You guys are pretty quiet.
00:33:18 Between you and you.
00:33:27 You guys are doing it all right. Here we go. Ready.
00:33:31 Which one? Who needs a t-shirt? Who needs a t-shirt? Ready. And hop.
00:33:39 There we go. All right. Great work, everybody. I hope you guys had fun.
00:33:44 See you guys later today. Thanks, everybody.

00:35:44 We are so thankful that the vast majority of Canadians support Canadian chicken farmers and the supply management system.
00:35:52 When consumers see the Raised by a Canadian Farmer brand, they can know that that chicken was raised in a healthy, safe environment.
00:36:00 Happy birds are healthy birds, and healthy birds provide a healthy food source for Canadians.
00:36:13 Skating is more than just a sport. Skating is friendship. Passion. Skating is creativity. Freedom.
00:36:27 It's about going faster. Higher. Skating brings us together. It makes us cry. It brings smiles.
00:36:40 Skating is what we love.
00:36:46 It is time to celebrate ice skating all over the world on World Ice Skating Day.

00:38:06 Oh, hold on. You just texted. Wow, that looks good. You know what? The team sucks. We were gonna lose that game anyway. Be home in five.
00:38:16 Hey, Nadia. Hey, Peter. Have you seen the online Skate Canada store?
00:38:21 For the official merchandise? Yes. It's literally amazing. You should get it.

00:43:03 Our second team from Ontario, Lily Henson and Nathan Lickers.
00:43:08 From Quebec, Emmy Bronsard and Jacob Richman.
00:43:13 And from Ontario, Molly Lanahan and Dimitri Razgulayev.
00:43:18 We saw some great rhythm dances from these teams yesterday.
00:43:25 Yes, we did. And there is so much to look forward to in this group.
00:43:33 One program is wildly different than the other.
00:43:36 Which you might ask, then how do they judge it?
00:43:40 And that is a really good question.
00:43:42 Because ice dance is ever so hard to judge.
00:43:46 I think what's going to separate these teams is not only the technical aspect as always.
00:43:53 So those level fours on footwork, twizzles, one foot section.
00:44:00 But really and truly what magic they can create out there today.
00:44:05 What journey are they going to take us on?
00:44:08 And what are the moments that we're going to walk away from this performance and say,
00:44:12 that was special. We've had a few of those already.
00:44:15 Absolutely.
00:44:17 You spoke about yesterday that there are only three different groups of coaches here in this event.
00:44:23 Isn't that wild?
00:44:25 It is wild. And I was thinking about the team atmosphere that these skaters experience.
00:44:30 And what the benefit that brings.
00:44:32 And I remembered that when you trained in Detroit, there were many teams there.
00:44:36 Did you find that was so helpful?
00:44:38 Absolutely.
00:44:40 At the maximum we had five coaches at the Detroit Skating Club.
00:44:46 Squally Camerlengo, Angelica Krilova, Elizabeth Punslin, Swallow, Natalia Anenko-Deller and Masanul Skali.
00:44:54 We had incredible coaching. We had many, many teams.
00:44:58 And it's a community. You build rapport with each other.
00:45:01 You push each other because we would do our run-throughs every day.
00:45:04 We would be struggling every day together.
00:45:06 We would be celebrating every day together.
00:45:08 And personally, I love a team atmosphere.
00:45:12 I think that I'm like a team player finding myself in an independent sport somehow.
00:45:20 But I love it.
00:45:23 And that definitely serves these teams well.
00:45:25 I said this yesterday and I think it absolutely bears repeating that Scott Moyer School,
00:45:33 a branch of the Montreal School I am, is in London, Ontario.
00:45:40 And he's been there for a couple of years now building up his team.
00:45:44 And this season is really where I can sit back and go, "Wow."
00:45:51 The program that we saw from Alyssa Robinson and Jacob Horst was choreographed by Scott.
00:45:56 And I see him shine in this role.
00:45:59 And that I'm sure doesn't come as a surprise to many people.
00:46:03 But it takes time to grow into a completely new chapter.
00:46:08 And I don't know, for some reason it just feels like it's all coming together.
00:46:12 He is the junior champion in Canada.
00:46:15 We saw Crown a few days ago.
00:46:19 So congratulations to him and the team.
00:46:22 And a bright team in these two.
00:46:24 Oh yes.
00:46:25 This was a huge takeaway for me on practice.
00:46:28 A team to watch in particular this free dance.
00:46:31 Extraordinary.
00:46:33 Nathan Lickers.
00:46:36 Hayley and Nick there.
00:46:48 They've had an unconventional season as well.
00:46:51 An interesting story from these two.
00:46:55 We know that Nick elected to retire and eventually choosing to come back.
00:47:01 This is where he wanted to be.
00:47:03 Skating with his long-time partner, Hayley Sales.
00:47:06 Taking a look now at Molly Lanahan and Dmitri Rezvulayev.
00:47:09 You might recognize that name.
00:47:11 One of this team's coaches.
