00:00:00 Hello everyone and welcome back to the Mark and Merfail arena here at Winsport
00:00:05 in Calgary, Alberta. My name is Kaitlin Weaver and I am joined by three-time
00:00:10 Canadian Olympian in pairs, Miss Kirsten Moore-Towers. Thank you so much for
00:00:15 rejoining us for the junior pairs event today. I'm so excited Kaitlin, yesterday
00:00:19 was so great I had so much fun I can't wait to see what these pair teams do
00:00:23 today. Absolutely, I learned a lot I hope you did too at home but can I ask you a
00:00:27 question? Are the junior pairs looking for a little bit more of a redemption
00:00:32 skate today? Yes of course you can always ask me any question you know that but
00:00:36 yes I do think that some of the pairs will look for a little bit of a
00:00:39 redemption today. We had a little bit of some uneven performances yesterday we
00:00:43 saw some really great things, some really strong performances but also some
00:00:47 uncharacteristic mistakes that I certainly didn't expect and I think
00:00:50 probably the teams themselves didn't expect either. Absolutely and I think
00:00:54 that comes with nerves at this level as well but we are looking out for those
00:00:57 three spots for the junior world team. Are you excited for today and
00:01:03 who do you think you're looking out for? Yes I'm so excited so thrilled Ava and
00:01:08 Jonathan yesterday really setting themselves apart from the rest of the
00:01:12 field. Of course we know that the world team isn't decided just based solely on
00:01:16 this competition there is a selection process a lot goes into this but these
00:01:21 teams certainly will be looking to have great skates here to make a really good
00:01:25 name for their case to be on that team and I think we have a couple of these
00:01:29 top three teams really it can go kind of in any order I think we we see a really
00:01:34 large lead see a comfortable lead from Ava and Jonathan as I mentioned but
00:01:38 anything can happen in a free program. All right well I am so excited for the
00:01:42 junior pairs event coming up here at the 2024 Canadian National Figure Skating
00:01:47 Championships here in Calgary. Sit tight we'll see you down at the ice.

00:07:52 welcome back to win sport in calgary alberta my name is caitlin weaver i am your host for the junior pairs event
00:08:15 the medals are on the line and luckily because i don't know a lot about pairs i am joined by my amazing incredible legendary
00:08:23 canadian pairs champion and co-host kirsten moore towers
00:08:29 hello caitlin weaver
00:08:31 we're back we were here yesterday with the short program if you're just joining us for the first time welcome we have such incredible depth in canada at the junior level
00:08:42 and pairs especially kirsten can you tell us a little bit about what we saw yesterday
00:08:47 yeah that's right as you mentioned we have such incredible depth in in pairs in canada right now in in the junior and in the senior events here of course we're watching the junior pair free program live
00:09:01 these teams come from such a variety of different levels in their career and times in their journey some of them are brand new some of them have been skating together for a number of years they although yesterday put together put out short programs that they can be proud of
00:09:15 totally dependent on where they're at in their lives at this moment and where they're at in their development of pairs
00:09:23 and what i love to see at this level you know sometimes in senior everything is made to look easy and some of the hardest things in the world you can see canadian pairs do and you're like wow that doesn't look that hard but here you see as you were saying the development so we see a lot of different levels in ranges and i think it's a testament to how hard this discipline is
00:09:45 absolutely it's a testament to the difficulty of this discipline and also the progressions that we see you're right we often don't get to see that in the senior level more or less everybody is comfortable with the elements that they're putting out but here we see teams trying things for the first time we see the progressions on the warm up here that they're taking leading into doing these difficult elements for them and it was really fun to see yesterday Alberta pair team of Annika Benke and Cole Sauve tried their very first throw triple loop in a program
00:10:15 they landed it and at these junior levels this is where we get to see exciting things like this absolutely i will never forget my first junior dance national championships and maybe there are some moments i'd like to forget do you remember being at this level yes i do i did junior for only one season it was my first year of pairs and it was so exciting and it's such an interesting time for them to come together with all of the teams in the country for the first time this season
00:10:44 and get to see what other teams are doing and the way other things train and practice and warm up and their progressions that they take into each element and it can not only be an exciting competition experience but also an invaluable learning experience as well absolutely and here in Canada we have a lot to be proud of on and off the ice you'll see some familiar faces as part of the teams coaching teams all of these teams come from such a wonderful village
00:11:12 of pairs experts so let's take a look at who we have on the ice starting us off first we'll have Natalia Custodio and Christopher Hammer we just saw a double twist from them second we have Megan Udine and Aiden Wright from Ontario and third to skate in final in this group is Annika Benke and Cole Sauve who you mentioned landed their first triple loop in this event
00:11:40 can you tell me a little bit about what's different in the long program versus the short yeah for sure teams have a little bit more freedom in the long program in the short yesterday we saw that they had prescribed elements there are seven elements in a short program several of them are prescribed each team has to do the same element and that for the reason being that they each team learns all of the different elements all of the different types of throws and lifts and death spiral today
00:12:08 they'll have a little bit more freedom teams in this long program today will do one twist they'll do two jump elements one solo jump and one jump one jump combination or sequence and they can choose whichever jumps they'd like to do they will do two throws they can do any throws they like but they must be different here we'll see Megan and Aiden doing their throw double loop
00:12:29 teams will also do two lifts from different groups so they can do a group three lift which we saw in the short yesterday they can do group four we might see some group five lifts that being of course the highest earning lift we'll talk about that a little bit more teams will do one pair combination spin they'll do one death spiral they can choose any death spiral they like and they'll do one choreo sequence that sounds like a lot of things in one program it does yeah you know it this is certainly a marathon and not a sprint in these long programs so it's a lot of fun to watch
00:12:58 yeah great question I think of course the standings from yesterday play a role in today just simply for the skate order teams will skate in reverse order today so the team who won the short program will skate last in the free program today but in terms of the skaters themselves I think especially for some of these long programs it's so interesting to see how much of a difference the skaters make in terms of their performance and how much of a difference they make in terms of their performance so I think it's going to be a really fun program to watch and I hope you guys are excited to see what happens in the next few weeks as well so we'll see you guys in the next one.
00:13:22 you spoke about these fantastic coaching teams we have such amazing pair coaches in Canada and these coaching teams will be able to help their skaters and direct them in a way that gives them the best chance to do their their best possible skating so I think it's going to be a really fun program to watch and I hope you guys are excited to see what happens in the next few weeks as well so we'll see you guys in the next one.
00:13:42 such amazing pair coaches in Canada and these coaching teams will be able to help their skaters and direct them in a way that gives them the best chance to do their their best possible skate today absolutely looking again at the start order leading us off Natalia Custodio and Christopher Hammer from Alberta Megan Udine and Aiden Wright from Ontario and Annika Benke and Cole Sauve we wish the best of luck to the teams competing today it was is
00:14:12 sure to be an exciting event that's right our first team we spoke a little bit we spoke a lot about them yesterday about Natalia's torn ligament in her hand and how they have had to be extremely creative to figure out how they can compete at this event safely but also in a way that allows her to actually physically do the elements so much of pair skating depends on using your hands and your wrist and so really really just so
00:14:42 impressive from that coaching team that they've been able to be creative enough to give that chance to team and give that team a chance to compete here and you know what skating is often it looks so easy out there right and we don't see what happens behind the scenes and this might be a little glimpse at that and I think it's so wonderful to see their courage front and center here we go
00:15:08 junior free program started by Natalia Custodio and Christopher Hammer from Alberta Northwest Territories and Inuvit she's 15 he's 20 free program music it'll be okay choreographed by a Katerina Gordeeva
00:15:32 are we gonna make it is this gonna hurt
00:15:38 hope can try to stay but that'll never work
00:15:56 hard to imagine a world where we don't go home
00:16:04 it's making me sick, oh, healing is under way
00:16:18 if you tell me you'll leave, I'll make it easy, it'll be okay
00:16:28 if we can't stop and believe, we don't have to listen, we don't have to stand
00:16:42 I love you, oh, feel it in me, oh, the future we've dreamed of is fading so fast, oh
00:17:10 there's nothing more painful, nothing more painful
00:17:18 hard to imagine a world where we don't go home
00:17:34 it's making me sick, oh, healing is under way
00:17:42 if you tell me you'll leave, I'll make it easy, it'll be okay

00:27:53 [Music]
00:28:09 Well, not quite the long program they might have been looking for or trained for for Megan and Aiden.
00:28:22 But, they tried their best.
00:28:25 That's right, yeah we see real dejection here, especially from Aiden.
00:28:31 Not their best day, I do want to say element wise, certainly they could have done better, we've seen better from them.
00:28:38 This is a brand new team this season, but I do want to say that I find such improvement in their overall skating skills and their speed.
00:28:46 We've seen Aiden in the pair event for a number of years and I have been extremely impressed with his improvement this week.
00:28:54 I don't know Megan as well, but I think they've really gelled together as a team.
00:29:00 Unfortunately today we didn't get to see that as much in the elements, but certainly some positive things in the overall skating that they can take away.
00:29:08 They have a great coaching team who will reassure them of that, of course, remind them of the bigger picture.
00:29:14 And just a reminder, Megan rotates her natural direction clockwise, which is not the norm.
00:29:23 It's a little bit the minority in this sport.
00:29:26 So many of these elements had to be relearned by both of them so that they could compete together.
00:29:32 And typically, if the partner who is rotating in the air of a twist rotates clockwise, that's the way that the twist will be performed, but not by this team.
00:29:42 And that was Megan's initiative. Look, here she's rotating counterclockwise in this double twist.
00:29:47 So impressive, similar to kind of being ambidextrous, but even harder.
00:29:51 Here they're throw triple salchow, a little bit loose in the air.
00:29:57 Group five lift from Aiden. There's a change of position.
00:30:01 Megan grabs her blade. Aiden's on one arm and there's their dismount.
00:30:07 That's in at a level four.
00:30:11 Megan is on her forward inside despiral, aptly named. Megan is on her forward inside edge.
00:30:16 And that little swing there is an exit feature as well. They'll be using that as a feature for a level.
00:30:21 A little bit of difficulty here. We see Aiden going for the turn reverse direction.
00:30:26 That's a feature in this lift. Once we change position, we're really struggling to keep turning.
00:30:32 We know that clean and tidy feet and effortlessness is something that judges are looking for for grade of execution.
00:30:38 So they will get minus there. Not here though. Really nice throw double loop.
00:30:44 There were some definite bright moments in this program, and I loved seeing the tenacity of both partners.
00:30:51 They probably were exhausted at the end, just having to fight through a majority of these elements.
00:30:58 That's never the way you want to complete your program. But what I love is that they never gave up.
00:31:04 No, that's experience that will serve them in the future.
00:31:10 Megan's first season of pair skating, she's picked up this discipline so incredibly well.
00:31:16 And that's got to be hard. Absolutely. She's probably learning one million things every day.
00:31:23 In the kiss and cry with Bruno Marcotte on the left.
00:31:27 World and Olympic champion coach of Megan to Hamill and Eric Radford.
00:31:32 Jeff Langdon on the right choreographed their programs, and I thought he did such an incredible job in bringing out the best in them.
00:31:39 I liked their music selection. So when they go back to Oakville, Kirsten,
00:31:45 what is something a team of this level and perhaps that these challenges is going to work on?
00:31:50 I think, you know, what likely they're just going to want more time.
00:31:53 They've been together for one season, but they've been competing.
00:31:55 And so though competing is fun and it's great for experience, they would lose that training week.
00:32:00 So I think they'll look forward to going home and having uninterrupted training weeks where they can just continue to progress and build on the things that they've already learned together.
00:32:10 There may be some things that they had to learn really quickly in order to compete in this event.
00:32:14 And Bruno sometimes will start to rebuild that in the spring to make it even better for next season.
00:32:23 Free program score for Maggie and Yudin and Aidan Wright, 62.27, total 103.17, bringing them into first for the moment.
00:32:40 It's all about the long game.
00:32:46 Next to skate, representing Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Annika Benke and Cole Sauve.
00:32:59 She's 14, he's 16.
00:33:06 And the winner of music, "Monde Im Verse," choreographed by Joey Russell.

00:36:56 >> Kirsten, I thought that was so lovely.
00:36:58 What a wonderful program for Annika and Cole today.
00:37:03 What a particularly wonderful first half, especially.
00:37:07 That was really started off so strong.
00:37:10 Double twist is not their strongest element, though I do believe they've made improvements on it.
00:37:15 They'll want to keep working.
00:37:16 Right now it's just in at a level one.
00:37:17 They'll want to keep working on the features on that.
00:37:20 But what solid side-by-side triple salchows.
00:37:22 A beautiful throw triple salchow.
00:37:24 >> Yes.
00:37:25 >> Nice improvement on the lifts from Cole.
00:37:27 They did have that second lift, their group four lift, come down at challenge.
00:37:31 So it was nice to see them get that done.
00:37:33 >> And they were in sync every step of the way.
00:37:36 A couple elements that perhaps were not their cleanest, but they were in perfect unison.
00:37:42 >> Doing steps into the twist here.
00:37:44 Won't get the split feature.
00:37:47 Won't get the catch feature.
00:37:53 Nice triple salchow side-by-side.
00:37:55 Beautiful.
00:37:59 And here was their group five lift.
00:38:01 They'll want to keep working on the flow and the ease of those turns.
00:38:09 Throw triple salchow.
00:38:10 Beautifully done by Annika.
00:38:12 So confident.
00:38:13 >> So nice.
00:38:15 >> Here, though, we see Cole's heel.
00:38:19 Oh.
00:38:22 Oh, you know what?
00:38:23 In the program, I thought his heel dropped down.
00:38:26 It looks like the judges have reviewed it, and it didn't drop down after all, which is so great.
00:38:32 Unfortunate mistake there on the side-by-side triple toe.
00:38:35 When the skater's heel drops down on the despiral, it will garner zero.
00:38:39 No value for that element.
00:38:41 So it's great that they've reviewed that and decided that they did it well.
00:38:45 Here was their group four lift that they missed at challenge.
00:38:48 Really well done.
00:38:52 >> Sometimes slow-mo helps you.
00:38:55 >> That's right.
00:38:56 >> Sometimes it's not your friend.
00:38:59 >> As a general rule, we like to not have the judges review elements because sometimes --
00:39:04 or, sorry, the technical panel review elements because sometimes that can help them to find things that maybe they didn't see in the first place.
00:39:11 But in this case, we're seeing that review helped them to actually get credit for that element.
00:39:16 >> Which is ultimately every tech panel's goal, is to reward the points that are deserved.
00:39:21 >> Absolutely.
00:39:23 >> Free program score here at Canadian, 72.57.
00:39:29 First in that segment.
00:39:31 And a total score of 116.66.
00:39:35 First overall for Annika and Cole.
00:39:39 >> This team, as we mentioned yesterday, headed to the youth Olympics in a couple weeks.
00:39:43 This competition has been such a fantastic stepping stone for them to have a really successful event there.
00:39:50 So first year junior, great success.
00:39:53 >> Looking forward to more here in Calgary.
00:39:56 Don't go away.
00:39:58 We're going to refresh the ice and get ready for six more pairs.
00:40:02 Junior pairs, free program.
00:40:05 Be back soon.
00:40:10 >> We are so thankful that the vast majority of Canadians support Canadian chicken farmers and the supply management system.
00:40:18 >> When consumers see the raised by a Canadian farmer brand, they can know that that chicken was raised in a healthy, safe environment.
00:40:26 >> Happy birds are healthy birds.
00:40:28 And healthy birds provide a healthy food source for Canadians.

00:51:00 >> I hope you grabbed a snack because we are back with the final two groups of the Junior Pairs Free Skating event.
00:51:07 I'm your host, Kaitlin Weaver, with my incredible analyst, Kirsten Moore-Towers.
00:51:13 Let's take a look at who is going to skate in this following group.
00:51:18 We've got Beau Callaghan and Christophe Roque from Quebec.
00:51:22 Also from Quebec, Noemi Rolland and Etienne Lacasse.
00:51:27 And rounding out the group from Quebec, Julia Catropi and Simon Demarais.
00:51:36 And I have to say I watched this group practice this morning and of course we're at a competition and everybody has a job to do,
00:51:42 but all three of these teams were clapping for each other and supporting each other.
00:51:46 The fifth and sixth team to skate, second and third in this group, are training mates.
00:51:51 But the first team, of course, also from Quebec and surely they crossed paths a time or two in the season.
00:51:56 And it was just such great to -- so great to see these young athletes not only trying their best and of course trying to win,
00:52:04 but also supporting each other.
00:52:07 It's about the camaraderie and that is some of my favorite memories of my time in this sport is the relationships that you make along the way.
00:52:15 Kirsten, in the first group, if you're just joining us, we watched three teams complete their long program,
00:52:21 but you mentioned several different varieties of overhead lifts.
00:52:26 Can you give us a little bit more explanation on what is required and what that means in pair lingo?
00:52:33 Absolutely, I would love to.
00:52:35 And I think it's really important because these different groups of lifts are classified based on how the man is picking up the woman.
00:52:42 So, for example, a group three lift, which we saw everybody do yesterday, it is required, is when the man lifts the woman by her hip.
00:52:50 A group four lift is when a man lifts the woman by her hand, such as a pressure lift, for example.
00:52:56 But the group five lift, which is worth the most points, is where the woman actually does half of a rotation to get into position in the air,
00:53:05 which means when you see the male turning, the man and the woman will be facing the same direction,
00:53:11 which I know is a little bit tricky and confusing, but I'll point it out to you when we see one.
00:53:16 And it's so important for the skaters to develop these skills to do the group five lifts because they are worth so many more points.
00:53:24 So, for example, a group three lift level four is worth 5.1 points.
00:53:29 If you do a group five reverse lift, for example, level four, it's worth seven points.
00:53:35 So that's almost two points just in that one lift done at a level four, of course, but without the GOE included in that score.
00:53:43 And that can make a really big difference in the standings for these skaters.
00:53:48 And it's something that they probably will want to learn as they progress through the sport.
00:53:55 Absolutely. And senior, it will be mandatory to do a group five lift.
00:53:59 And there are several categories of group five lifts.
00:54:02 The one we will most commonly see, and in fact, just saw is a group five reverse lift by Julia and Simon.
00:54:09 She's changed now into her star position that that change of position will be a feature they're going for.
00:54:15 But we also sometimes see a group five step lift, which is a little bit easier in nature, worth a little bit less in base value.
00:54:24 And we also see a group five toe overhead, also worth a little bit less.
00:54:28 We can see a group five backwards lift.
00:54:32 So there are a number of different lifts. It seems really confusing.
00:54:35 But when you take a look at how the man is picking the woman up, that is indicative of what actually group lift and what type of group you're seeing.
00:54:45 And would you say that the pickup is one of the hardest aspects of a lift?
00:54:51 Absolutely. A good entry into a lift or a good pickup, as you mentioned, can help the man have clean turns and get that good grade of execution.
00:55:02 Here we see Bo and Christoph warming up their throw double sow.
00:55:05 They will attempt to throw triple sow cow in their long program today.
00:55:12 As you're explaining, we're seeing a lot of solo jumps being warmed up, not all successfully.
00:55:22 We spoke yesterday. Sorry, Caitlin. We spoke yesterday about how the six minute warm up is just for getting warm here.
00:55:28 Throw triple sow cow from Bo. We're just trying to get into the ice.
00:55:33 Sometimes it can be a little bit different when you get in the arena and the lights are very bright and there are cameras.
00:55:41 Skaters are just trying to get into their environment.
00:55:50 Kirsten, for those in the arena and at home that aren't aware, you do a lot of work with developing pairs.
00:55:59 Can you tell us a little bit about what keeps you busy at this moment?
00:56:02 Yeah, I do. When people ask me what my job is, I usually tell them I just wear a lot of hats as it pertains to figure skating.
00:56:09 This job, analyzing the competition, being one of them, one of my favorites.
00:56:14 I also work with a number of pair teams at the Cannot Skating Club just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia.
00:56:21 They're young, they're pre-novice and lower. We have one novice team.
00:56:26 It's been so fun to help shape these skaters' journeys in a way that I hope will be positive and to give them great experiences that I hope they'll remember for the entirety of their lives.
00:56:40 I just love pair skating so much that I hope I can share that love with other people.
00:56:45 No doubt that you're leaving a wonderful lasting impression.
00:56:50 Thank you.
00:56:52 Looking again at this All-Quebec warm-up group, starting with 13-year-old Beau Callaghan and Christophe Roque,
00:57:02 followed by Noemi Roland and Etienne Lacasse, who did compete in the junior men already today.
00:57:10 And rounding off the group, Julia Kaczorowski and Simone Desmarais.
00:57:19 And all these teams had great short programs, really solid short programs that they can be proud of, and all three of these teams are new this season.
00:57:28 So we're really seeing what the first season as a pair team can look like.
00:57:33 I will say that all three of these teams are doing an incredible job already.
00:57:38 They look so well-matched, they're well-packaged, they have great choreography and just great foundation for amazing elements now and even better ones in the future.
00:57:50 All right, final moments with their coaches.
00:57:59 Leading us off.
00:58:05 Representing Quebec, 13-year-old Beau Callaghan, 18-year-old Christophe Roque.
00:58:16 Coached by Josée Piccard and Stephanie Fiorito.

01:02:15 Great skate from Beau and Christophe.
01:02:18 Beau really showing maturity beyond her years.
01:02:21 This team had a little bit of a difficult practice this morning.
01:02:27 Full credit to them for leaving it behind them and really doing such a great job here.
01:02:34 Credit to their coach, Josée Piccard, for pulling them out of that as well.
01:02:38 I think they can be so proud of so many things they did here.
01:02:41 As I mentioned, a really new team but such great foundational skills to build for the future.
01:02:47 They're so young.
01:02:48 We mentioned Beau is the youngest skater in this event.
01:02:50 So much time.
01:02:52 They have nothing but time to become the pair skaters that they want to be
01:02:56 and that will morph and change and grow and evolve as they continue skating together.
01:03:03 What an exciting journey for them to be on.
01:03:07 And done with poise.
01:03:08 Absolutely.
01:03:09 That was so wonderful to see.
01:03:11 Hugs with their choreographer, Julie Marquette.
01:03:14 I have to say this program was beautifully constructed.
01:03:19 Just very difficult transitions we've seen today in and out of elements.
01:03:26 We love to see how the program is woven together.
01:03:30 Nice double twist.
01:03:32 In at a level three, just missing one feature.
01:03:34 That's fantastic.
01:03:36 Here, side by side, double axel, single axel.
01:03:41 Good job.
01:03:42 That was something she missed on the warmup, so love to see it.
01:03:45 And here, their throw triple saucow.
01:03:48 Lovely done right on top.
01:03:49 A little bit slower than some of the other teams we'll see,
01:03:52 but a new element for them and so great to do it at nationals here.
01:03:56 This was their group five lift.
01:04:05 This, their back inside death spiral.
01:04:07 The first one we've seen, Beau is on a backward inside edge.
01:04:17 And this, their group three, we see Christophe has his right arm
01:04:22 just a little bit behind him and a little bit bent.
01:04:25 We want to see the female right on top of the male in the lift.
01:04:29 Having her a little bit to the outside can be a lot more difficult
01:04:34 to do those turns smoothly and cleanly.
01:04:38 And here, looking at their pair combination spin,
01:04:41 a great way to end this program.
01:04:43 Ended at level three.
01:04:45 They were likely going for a level four,
01:04:48 so the technical panel decided that they did not perhaps do enough rotations
01:04:52 in a certain position to get credit for it.
01:04:56 And an improvised ending when they're a little bit early.
01:04:59 I love it.
01:05:00 Really?
01:05:01 Oh, I had no idea.
01:05:04 Well, we were smiling our way through that program.
01:05:08 Such a joy to see bright lights.
01:05:12 And great to see their smile.
01:05:14 We could see a little bit of anxiousness from them this morning,
01:05:18 and I'm so happy to see them put out a performance that they're proud of
01:05:22 and that they can build on and grow from.
01:05:25 The scores for the free program, 79.3.
01:05:32 First in the segment, total score 125.13.
01:05:37 First overall, nice to see the smiles and laughs.
01:05:41 Best feeling in the world right there.
01:05:45 Thumbs up.
01:05:46 Thumbs up from us, too.
01:05:52 That was exciting.
01:05:53 Let's keep going.

01:10:00 Nice skate today from Noémie and Etienne.
01:10:03 A little bit up and down.
01:10:05 I cannot imagine how fatigued Etienne must feel.
01:10:09 We mentioned he competed in the Junior Men's event only a couple hours ago
01:10:15 and then did his pair practice and then following this pair program.
01:10:20 This is a new team. I think we saw a little bit of that today.
01:10:23 A little bit of looking for each other.
01:10:25 Not necessarily in tune and on time with each other the whole way through.
01:10:32 But that's okay. We'll see that. They have a bright future.
01:10:35 It's a great start for them.
01:10:37 There were some definite shining moments here.
01:10:39 I loved the flow of this program.
01:10:42 They skated with incredible maturity, almost of a senior team in my opinion.
01:10:48 I love to see how they still maintained the integrity of the program
01:10:53 even when things weren't quite going to their liking.
01:10:57 Absolutely. We can see they're well trained.
01:10:59 They train at an incredible skating school.
01:11:03 Their head coaches Yvanne Desjardins, Stephanie Valois.
01:11:06 Taking a look at some of their replays here.
01:11:15 Nice start. Nice character.
01:11:19 Lots ahead of them but feeling the moment.
01:11:23 Good height on the twist. Only at a level one right now.
01:11:26 So they'll want to clean up those features in the offseason.
01:11:30 Here their throw triple Sao Cao. Huge.
01:11:32 For me, actually, both of these throws are a little bit too big.
01:11:36 A little bit hard to control.
01:11:38 Here their group five lift.
01:11:40 I hope you saw that Noemi skating in was on a backwards edge.
01:11:44 That's really important for this lift.
01:11:47 The woman has to be gliding backwards into the takeoff.
01:11:52 Well done.
01:11:56 Here into their side by side triple Sao Caos.
01:11:59 Go from Etienne, step out from Noemi.
01:12:02 And again, throw double loop.
01:12:04 They can do this so well.
01:12:06 A little bit open with her left side in the air.
01:12:09 So has to step out.
01:12:11 That will be a minus in the grade of execution.
01:12:14 Here their group three lift.
01:12:16 Etienne holding Noemi by her hip.
01:12:20 Different dismount than we've seen. I like it.
01:12:23 And a lot of flow out of the lifts as well,
01:12:25 which we haven't seen so much today so far.
01:12:29 There they are.
01:12:32 Reprogram score 79.91, first in that segment.
01:12:37 It was enough today. Total 126.58.
01:12:44 They remain ahead overall.
01:12:49 Lots to take away here.
01:12:56 Lots of potential.
01:12:58 Etienne needs a nap, I think. That's a big day.
01:13:00 And a gatorade.
01:13:03 Last in this group, representing Quebec,
01:13:08 Julia Katroki and Simone Desmarais.
01:13:15 Also by Yvanne Desjardins.

01:17:06 Wow. I loved it. I love this team.
01:17:11 I hadn't seen this team before this competition.
01:17:15 They withdrew from the Skate Canada Challenge.
01:17:17 They actually traveled to the competition,
01:17:19 but had an injury.
01:17:21 Simone's back was hurting them,
01:17:23 and they were not able to safely compete,
01:17:25 so their coaching team wisely withdrew them before the event.
01:17:28 I think this team has so many fantastic qualities
01:17:33 and surely a bright future.
01:17:35 You know what I find so interesting about them?
01:17:37 They're a new pair team together,
01:17:39 and I find some of their strengths are some of the pair elements.
01:17:43 Really, really strong. Their connection together,
01:17:46 their musical accents in this program were just so enjoyable and effective.
01:17:53 They skated with abandon.
01:17:55 Shout out to the choreographer, Chantal Lefebvre.
01:17:57 What an amazing program, and especially at this level.
01:18:00 It stands out when a team can attack and flow
01:18:04 and feel like they're laying it all out there
01:18:09 while doing these very difficult elements.
01:18:13 A mixed bag in that way, would you say, Kirsten?
01:18:16 Yeah, absolutely.
01:18:19 Taking a look at their replays.
01:18:22 But this program seemed to bring out their best.
01:18:26 Nice, solid double twist.
01:18:29 And at a level 2 right now, so they're missing two features.
01:18:32 The foundation is good, though. It looks very safe.
01:18:35 There, we saw just the ending of that lift.
01:18:41 This was gorgeous. We know in the summer they were working on throw triples.
01:18:45 And then Julia broke her thumb. They were unable to do so anymore.
01:18:49 That's probably the worst element in the program. That's okay.
01:18:53 They have really a great team of coaches and great training mates.
01:18:57 So many skaters to look up to.
01:19:00 This was such a shame. I saw them do this element so many times so far this week so well.
01:19:06 Maybe just a slight lapse in focus.
01:19:10 Interesting transitions. Great dance lifts.
01:19:15 Forward inside death spiral here.
01:19:18 And at a level 2, skaters achieve the level of death spiral
01:19:22 simply by how many times both the man and the woman rotate one revolution.
01:19:27 For example, if you do one revolution in a low position, that's a level 1.
01:19:32 The scores are up for Julia and Simo.
01:19:37 81.13. We're in the 80s now, Kirst.
01:19:42 Total score 127.9.
01:19:48 Maintaining their position from the short program.
01:19:53 Really looking forward to more from this team.
01:19:58 Nice to see a little bit of redemption for some of the teams.
01:20:03 And here we go. We are back with the top 3 from yesterday.
01:20:14 This ought to be exciting. I feel like you never know.
01:20:19 Gold, silver, bronze. How it's going to shake out.
01:20:22 Ice is slippery. You just never know.
01:20:25 From Quebec, Martina Arellano-Kent and Charlie Laliberté-Laurent.
01:20:32 From Ontario, Jasmine Derouchet and Kieran Thrasher.
01:20:37 With a large ovation from the crowd and from Ontario,
01:20:42 Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
01:20:50 This is bound to be an exciting group.
01:20:55 This whole event has been so fantastic, but these 3 really setting themselves apart.
01:21:01 We know that these were the 3 teams that competed for Canada in the Junior Grand Prix Final in Beijing, China.
01:21:08 In December of last year, about a month ago.
01:21:14 And each team really bringing something different to their style of pair skating.
01:21:21 Martina and Charlie, a new team this year. Jasmine and Kieran, a new team this year.
01:21:26 Ava and Yonatan together only a couple of seasons. Taking a look first at Jasmine and Kieran.
01:21:34 I thought all teams this morning on practice looked calm and comfortable and confident.
01:21:43 And Kirsten, it seems to really paint a picture about Canadian pairs and the legacy that Canadian pairs have had through the years.
01:21:50 Looking at Jamie Selle and David Pelletier, world champions, Megan Duhamel and Eric Bradford.
01:21:56 Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro.
01:21:59 Not quite the same caliber, but I know what you mean.
01:22:02 There's been intense competition between Canadian pair teams for years and years and years, which only helps all teams to get better.
01:22:10 Right, and with Diana Stilato-Dudek and Maxine Duchamp leading the charge in the senior pairs category in the world.
01:22:19 And then to have these three represented in the junior category.
01:22:24 What an amazing legacy Canada has had in this discipline.
01:22:28 Absolutely. Seeing a single axle on the first of those two jumps there for Martina.
01:22:34 They're looking for two doubles.
01:22:36 This team had such a fantastic Grand Prix season and then really struggled at the Grand Prix final.
01:22:42 Oops, fall from Ava there on her solo triple saucow.
01:22:49 Seems to be the side by side are proving to be more of a challenge, in particular the triples.
01:22:58 You know what, it seems like it should be very easy if you can do a triple saucow by yourself.
01:23:03 You can do it with a partner, but with the close proximity to another person and trying to match timing, it is very difficult.
01:23:10 Just a throw double loop there for Martina, taking a spill.
01:23:15 These teams are all going to want to drop their shoulders a little bit, take a deep breath.
01:23:20 But sometimes when you're used to skating with the same people and competing at multiple competitions in the season,
01:23:29 this is another day at the office for them, wouldn't you say?
01:23:32 Yeah, that's right. It is another day at the office for sure.
01:23:34 And I think sometimes it can be a case of wanting it so much that your body and your brain responds slightly differently.
01:23:41 If you were to just perhaps do the things you do on a normal training day, might go a little bit differently.
01:23:49 There at the throw triple loop for Martina, low free leg, but she hangs on to it.
01:23:56 This team is coached by Emily Fortin and Marc-Andre Craig, and they told me that they have been training so well since the Grand Prix Final.
01:24:07 Now looking at Jasmine Derocher and Kieran Thrasher, coached by Bruno Marcotte, Brian Shales and team warming up.
01:24:13 That's a progression into a triple twist. That was a single from Jasmine and Kieran, and here a triple from Ava and Jonathan.
01:24:20 They sure did.
01:24:23 When it comes to styling and strategy, do you find that these teams all kind of take a separate approach?
01:24:34 Even just by looking at them from the outside, they all look like they have a different style, and that's cool to see as well.
01:24:41 Absolutely. I love to see the personalities of the skaters reflecting in the style that they choose to portray,
01:24:48 and it's so great to see them expanding their horizons and trying different things.
01:24:51 We haven't seen that yet because they are so new, but as their career progresses, we'll see more of that.
01:24:57 Through a double loop from Ava, you see her opening up from rotation so early. She has so much space in the air.
01:25:04 Here, steps preceding the twist, that's a level, and then just a single from Martina and Charlie.
01:25:12 That will be what they'll do before they do triple.
01:25:15 We often see that. Sometimes teams will do a single immediately followed by a triple and skip the double altogether.
01:25:22 It just depends on what they decide with their coaches is the best way to strategically get the best element out when they need to when the music's on.
01:25:30 Martina, the bronze medalist from the Junior Pair Canadian Championships last season, and Charlie with his former partner, the novice champion.
01:25:44 So both successful pair skaters in their own right, but coming together, it's in my opinion, the best they've ever been.
01:25:52 Sometimes the right partner is worth waiting for. Absolutely.
01:25:58 One more time, looking at the start order.
01:26:05 It's been an exciting event, but it's about to turn up.
01:26:13 Martina and Charlie leading us off, followed by Jasmine and Kieran.
01:26:16 Last escape, Ava and Yonatan.
01:26:21 Looking at Ava and Yonatan's group three lift.
01:26:29 Change of position, change of hold, and their dismount.
01:26:34 This team really looked confident in practice this morning.
01:26:41 I love how they match even the exit of their elements there.
01:26:44 Just giving them, yes, a look of professionalism.
01:26:48 Making them look much more experienced than they are.
01:26:52 But they will be.
01:26:54 I meant that as a compliment. Absolutely.
01:26:59 That's it for the warm-up. It's game time now.
01:27:04 Representing Quebec.
01:27:09 Representing Quebec.

01:31:12 Well that is more indicative of who this team is. Wow, so happy to see them skate like that here.
01:31:20 No matter the result, I think really that is just such a more characteristic showing of who they are as a team.
01:31:29 And they're brand new and we saw them have some struggles in the middle of the season there at Grand Prix Final.
01:31:35 But we were told that their training was going so well leading into this.
01:31:39 And then such a bizarre skate from them yesterday with uncharacteristic mistakes.
01:31:46 But we saw them put out a skate that they can be proud of and hopefully gain some confidence back.
01:31:50 Absolutely, seeing the medal that definitely led them to compete in the Junior Grand Prix Final here today.
01:31:58 Rebounding from perhaps a slightly weaker short program.
01:32:03 But not to say this was any easier than yesterday. They had a lot of very difficult elements in that program.
01:32:11 Extremely, let's take a look.
01:32:15 Very technically challenging program. I love the choreography. This here I think is so gorgeous.
01:32:21 Really nice program by Mélène Girard. Here their twist.
01:32:26 Beautiful opening sequence here. Double Axel into Double Axel.
01:32:38 Done so well by both partners. Here their Group 3 lift.
01:32:43 In at a level 4.
01:32:45 Change of position, change of hold. And their dismount.
01:32:52 Really nicely done.
01:32:54 Both throws in this program, but particularly this, the throw triple loop.
01:32:59 Done with such confidence.
01:33:02 This element they struggled with yesterday.
01:33:06 Much better today. So easy.
01:33:12 Level 3.
01:33:13 Group 5 lift here. Losing a little bit of speed for Charlie.
01:33:20 You can see that his right arm is wiggling around a little bit. Not as solid as his first lift, but oh my goodness, who cares.
01:33:28 Great skate for these two, who seem to always be early. They must go faster at competition.
01:33:36 Nerves can do magical things.
01:33:40 Much more relaxed and happy today in the Kiss and Cry.
01:33:44 Free program score of 99.7, with a total of 149.44.
01:33:52 How do you think that's going to stack up, Kirst?
01:33:55 We're going to see. I don't know. Anything can happen.
01:33:58 But no matter what happens from here on, they've done their job. They can be proud.
01:34:03 Regardless of the result, just another step in their journey.
01:34:08 An exciting journey to come for sure.
01:34:10 Next to skate, representing Ontario, Jasmine Desrochers and Kieran Thrasher,
01:34:18 coached by Bruno Marcotte and Brian Shales in Oakville.

01:38:18 A lot of stunning moments, and at the same time, a lot of moments on the edge of our seat.
01:38:24 That's right. This team is so new, and sometimes we see that more so in long programs,
01:38:29 because there are just way more elements to complete more difficult content.
01:38:34 And I feel like I'm saying it all the time, but Jasmine's so new to pair skating.
01:38:39 She has learned the discipline so incredibly well and quickly.
01:38:44 But we saw a little bit of that newness today.
01:38:46 Just some bizarre things running into each other on their side-by-side jump series.
01:38:51 One throw triple and one throw double.
01:38:54 I did see them practicing the throw triple saucow this morning, so they can do it.
01:38:59 It is in their arsenal. Probably a strategy idea from the team here.
01:39:05 What a bright future, though. This is not the end goal for this team.
01:39:09 This really is the long game and the long-term success that this team will have.
01:39:15 Absolutely. And I really feel like I'm looking at the future of Canadian pairs here,
01:39:22 with all of the teams today. But something about this team feels extra special.
01:39:27 I love their unity on the ice. They've got a wonderful chemistry and balance.
01:39:33 Despite how young their partnership is, they skated very close together.
01:39:38 That's right, working so often with Mark Bradshaw, an ice dance coach,
01:39:42 a part of the team at Skate Oakville. And we can see that in their skating.
01:39:46 They have great ankle bend. This, I thought, one of their best twists of the week.
01:39:51 Into the level three with a positive grade of execution.
01:39:56 Side-by-side double axels. The more difficult of their two side-by-side jumps.
01:40:00 Well done. And here, their group five lift. We saw Jasmine entering on her backwards edge.
01:40:08 Change of position, Kieran, on one arm. This, a beautiful position.
01:40:12 Judges are looking for the position of the woman in the air to do the positive,
01:40:16 to award them a positive grade of execution.
01:40:19 And I think Jasmine has such great lift positions in particular.
01:40:24 Throw triple loop. I thought she pre-rotated with her upper body a little.
01:40:28 I want to talk about this, the back outside desk barrel. We haven't seen one yet.
01:40:32 It is one of the most difficult desk barrels, and it is worth more points.
01:40:36 So if teams can do it and do it well, it is so worth putting in the long program this season.
01:40:43 Little wild in the air there on the throw double sal. That throw is still under construction.
01:40:48 It's still coming.
01:40:52 I'm sure the learning curve with this team has been so steep just based on their newness together.
01:40:59 Kieran has improved immensely, came to pair skating as a hockey player.
01:41:05 And he also could have played soccer as well.
01:41:09 What an incredible athlete. A natural-born athlete, and just has worked so hard to hone his finesse
01:41:16 and skating skill and presence on the ice. Bruno saying hi to his daughters Zoe and Mia.
01:41:23 Jeff Langdon on the right. We saw them earlier with Megan Uden and Aiden Wright.
01:41:29 Bruno, the head coach of a huge pair school in Oakville, Ontario,
01:41:34 and has been helping teams to be successful at international competitions for years and years and years.
01:41:44 Scores coming up for the free, 97.7, second in the free program.
01:41:53 Total 149.24, second overall.
01:41:58 So they dropped one spot, but they're guaranteed a medal here at Canadiens.
01:42:07 A little bit of disappointment there, but that's okay.
01:42:11 And last to skate, representing Ontario, Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
01:42:20 She's 15, he's 20.
01:42:23 Coached by Kevin Dawe and Lee Barkel.
01:42:26 Free program, writing's on the wall, and Skyfall choreographed by Carol Lane and Yuris Razguliyev.

01:46:18 That went by so incredibly fast for me.
01:46:20 I was just about to say, there we have it.
01:46:23 That's it, and I'm sad.
01:46:26 Wow, that went by too fast.
01:46:29 Incredible performance from Ava and Yonatan, and incredible commentary by Carol Lane and Yuris Razguliyev.
01:46:36 We were noting the commentary off of the mic throughout their whole performance.
01:46:41 So many cool, intricate transitions there.
01:46:44 Yes, the choreography was beautifully timed to the music.
01:46:50 Seamless.
01:46:51 Intentional.
01:46:52 Yes.
01:46:53 And you have very capable skaters that bring themselves to that and commit themselves to that, and that's half the battle.
01:47:03 The in-betweens, the transitions matter so much.
01:47:06 They're half of your score, but sometimes they're looked over a little bit.
01:47:12 Especially at the junior level.
01:47:14 At the junior level, to think about the jumps and the lifts and throws.
01:47:18 But this team was very present with their performance.
01:47:23 I loved it.
01:47:24 I loved it too.
01:47:25 Just full of impressive technical elements.
01:47:30 We saw a slight misstep from Yanni.
01:47:32 I'm sure we'll see it.
01:47:34 I loved this opening to their program.
01:47:39 This team really showing a confidence that we haven't seen from the other teams.
01:47:47 Assurity of their skating.
01:47:50 Here their triple twist.
01:47:52 Into the level three.
01:47:54 I want to say they felt patient today, Kirsten.
01:47:56 Absolutely.
01:47:57 There the double axel, the hardest jump done.
01:47:59 Single axel, single toe.
01:48:02 Yonatan under rotated.
01:48:04 I'm sure he can't remember the last time he fell on a double toe.
01:48:07 But what a great recovery here.
01:48:10 Wow.
01:48:11 Very next element in their side-by-side triple salchow.
01:48:14 Very well done and so hard to regroup so quickly.
01:48:18 Here their group three lift.
01:48:20 Yonatan's hand on Ava's hip.
01:48:22 Change of hold, change of position.
01:48:26 And their dismount.
01:48:30 Easy level four.
01:48:31 And here their group five.
01:48:34 Look at the speed they're carrying.
01:48:35 You can tell on the screen by how fast the seats go by.
01:48:39 I thought Yonatan's footwork on the first lift was a little better on the second,
01:48:44 which is probably normal.
01:48:45 It's almost his last element.
01:48:47 Probably a little bit fatigued.
01:48:50 Pairspin level four but with a V,
01:48:53 which means that they did not achieve all three basic positions,
01:48:56 the camel, the sit, and the upright.
01:48:59 That will be a slight loss of points that I'm sure they'll be kicking themselves for.
01:49:04 But ultimately a great competition for this team.
01:49:08 Such a bright future.
01:49:09 They're so young.
01:49:11 This team has been with Kevin Da since the very beginning
01:49:14 and more recently with Lee Barkell as well.
01:49:18 Fantastic work.
01:49:20 Well trained.
01:49:21 Lovely to watch.
01:49:23 And easy to watch.
01:49:27 The scores, here it is.
01:49:30 Will it be enough?
01:49:31 Yes, 105.05 in the free program, 165.5 overall.
01:49:40 First across the board for Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov,
01:49:45 your new Canadian Pairs champions.
01:49:49 And we see them a little bit more reserved,
01:49:51 and I think that's just indicative of their ceiling feeling higher.
01:49:55 They're really looking for that international success.
01:49:58 What a great start for that here.
01:50:00 We'll look to see if they are selected to be on the Junior World Team.
01:50:06 The Skate Canada selection process is very clear on the Skate Canada website.
01:50:09 It does not only depend on this competition.
01:50:12 There is a committee who will decide who goes.
01:50:14 I think Ava and Yonatan have made an excellent case for themselves.
01:50:19 And look at that, 149.44 and 149.24,
01:50:25 a difference of two-tenths of a point between second and third.
01:50:29 What an incredible event today.
01:50:31 Events like these just solidify how much I love this discipline.
01:50:35 I think sometimes it can feel a little bit overwhelming
01:50:38 when you've never tried it before, but I just love it,
01:50:42 and I think these skaters showed us why we all should love pair skating.
01:50:46 I love watching it with you.
01:50:49 Taking a look at some of the replays here.
01:50:53 I thought we saw so many personal wins in this event today.
01:50:59 It really is what it's all about.
01:51:01 It's not all about the actual win for some skaters.
01:51:07 Another step on their journey.
01:51:12 Kirsten, thank you so much for hosting and analyzing with me.
01:51:17 I'm Caitlin Weaver. I'm going to run to the dance practice,
01:51:20 and I'll leave you with Kirsten to go through some of the memories of today's performance.
01:51:34 Great skate today by Bo and Kristoff.
01:51:39 Loved this team's free program and their choreography,
01:51:43 highlighted by some difficult tricks that I'm sure are new for them,
01:51:47 but they certainly get stronger as they progress in their partnership.
01:51:55 Noemi and Etienne. Etienne a very busy man today.
01:52:00 Competing his singles program earlier on, followed by pairs.
01:52:06 Doing an excellent job in both.
01:52:08 Not easy to be a double discipline skater and to manage that workload, but I thought he did.
01:52:13 Such a fantastic job and was so well managed with the help of his team.
01:52:20 Julian Simon. What a bright light in this event for me.
01:52:27 Such great choreography and great pair elements.
01:52:31 Not the most difficult that we saw in the event,
01:52:34 but elements that have such solid technical foundation that will be more difficult in the future.
01:52:44 The first team from our last group, Martina and Charlie.
01:52:47 What an amazing skate for them today.
01:52:51 And Jasmine and Kieran. Brand new team this year.
01:52:56 Jasmine so new to the pair discipline and doing just such a fantastic job.
01:53:02 Beautiful back outside desk barrel here.
01:53:14 And our champions.
01:53:17 Newly crowned Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
01:53:21 So well deserved. So prepared this week in practice, warm up and competition.
01:53:29 Brilliantly choreographed program with such fantastic technical elements.
01:53:34 This team really does have it all for such a bright future.
01:53:42 As you can see, we're getting set up for the medal presentation here, medal ceremony.
01:53:49 What a thrilling time for these athletes.
01:53:51 I am Kirsten Moore Towers. The host of this event was Caitlin Weaver.
01:53:54 She ran to watch the dance practice to prepare for later.
01:53:58 We'll have the medal ceremonies and then our next event will be the Junior Women's free program.
01:54:03 We'll start at four.
