00:00:00 That is a great moment for the coaches to make sure the skater knows that there are great qualities, there are moments that she can look forward to and aim towards.
00:00:13 And just as he said, it takes time.
00:00:18 And we've been saying that for days. Patience. The beauty of patience.
00:00:23 In some years we get the events and it's just full of great skating and everybody's skating their best and it's so exciting.
00:00:30 And then there's other times when it's challenging skating, which is what we're seeing now.
00:00:34 And you get down. And it's not about that. This is part of the journey.
00:00:40 We always say that and it sounds corny and the whole thing like that, but it is the reality of life.
00:00:45 As every person out there listening to this, except for the young ones, they don't know yet, whether it's academics, it doesn't matter what it is.
00:00:53 It takes time to be the best. And these guys are trying to be the best in the country.
00:00:57 Are you a patient person? Yeah, I am. Good for you.
00:01:00 Well, I'm a patient person in building something long term because I understand long term.
00:01:04 I'm not very patient when it comes to short term. If I drop something, I get mad at myself.
00:01:10 And then, of course, there's a reason this is called the kiss and cry.
00:01:13 There's a reason you sit down afterwards because sometimes the skate goes so amazing and you're thrilled.
00:01:19 Other times not. Are you a patient person? No, not at all.
00:01:24 You had to be patient. It took seven years to get your free program.
00:01:27 It doesn't mean I was patient. You must have been because you stayed that long.
00:01:30 I stayed, but I was frustrated.
00:01:34 And then I had to reevaluate and then aim and then reevaluate and then try.
00:01:40 What skills did you bring out of your experiences, good and bad, out of skating?
00:01:45 What skills did you bring to the rest of your life?
00:01:48 There's no perfect answer. There's no such thing as perfection.
00:01:52 The only thing you can aim for is excellence and being proud of what you do.
00:01:58 And an excellent program can have a mistake. Just hopefully a small one.
00:02:07 I think we've got some technical problems perhaps in the system.
00:02:12 We see some walking back and forth on the judging panel.
00:02:15 That's why the scores are taking a little bit longer in this case.
00:02:20 We depend so much on computers in everything, every walk of our life now.
00:02:25 What would you do without your iPhone or your phone?
00:02:31 But sometimes they break down.
00:02:34 Here we go. Here's the scores. Free program for Valeria.
00:02:37 76.73. That is third in the free program with a total competition score of 121.09.
00:02:43 That will put Valeria currently into first place.
00:02:46 She's not particularly happy with her skate.
00:02:50 She's on top of the leaderboard at the moment at this stage of the competition.
00:02:55 Please welcome the next competitor.
00:02:58 Our next competitor represents British Columbia, Yukon.
00:03:02 This is 15-year-old Gabrielle Jugnot. She started skating at the age of three.
00:03:10 She's out of the Kona Skating Club, coached by Karen and Jason Mongrain.
00:03:17 Looking to come back from a few mistakes in the short program.
00:03:22 She'll skate the free to Smile.

00:06:48 You can see her rolling her eyes at the end of that program.
00:07:14 There are some really fantastic moments to that program,
00:07:18 but unfortunately a mixture of mistakes that were happening,
00:07:22 especially on those triple Sal attempts.
00:07:24 You can see she wasn't comfortable with those in warm-up,
00:07:27 and then started overthinking, and then lost her confidence on it.
00:07:30 Yeah, just not letting it go.
00:07:31 She had great momentum and speed coming off that back inside edge,
00:07:34 but then just felt something and opened and popped it up.
00:07:37 The triple toe loops, though, were beautiful.
00:07:39 Triple toe loops, the double axles.
00:07:41 If the rest of her elements can get to that level, which I'm sure they can,
00:07:47 would be beautiful.
00:07:48 Yeah.
00:07:49 She's a great skater,
00:07:53 very good at matching the music, performing throughout.
00:07:57 Characteristic strong from that Kelowna club with Karen and Jason.
00:08:08 And here is a look at some of those elements.
00:08:11 Good.
00:08:17 I really love the beginning of that program.
00:08:20 She gets straight into the character.
00:08:23 And then here's a look at that first double axle.
00:08:26 The height and the distance, that is what I love about her jumps.
00:08:29 You can see it here again on the triple toe.
00:08:31 It jumps, covers so much ice distance to the point that she almost ran into the boards,
00:08:37 but still managed to get the double toe done afterwards.
00:08:39 But here you see the triple sow.
00:08:41 Good on the takeoff, but then got scared.
00:08:45 It leaned off to the outside and then able to get back for this triple toe.
00:08:49 You can see she's a lot more comfortable with that jumping pass.
00:08:52 And then here on the second triple sow,
00:08:55 it almost felt like she gave up on the jump before she even left the ice.
00:08:59 Yeah, she was kind of guessing on it,
00:09:01 not just taking the natural rhythm and getting ahead of herself.
00:09:03 But it's that hesitation and there's no room in jumping for hesitation
00:09:07 because it happens in a split second.
00:09:09 Here, look at the double Lutz single toe double loop.
00:09:13 The single toe was a little awkward.
00:09:16 Yeah, I think she was going for the older Euler, but I don't know.
00:09:20 Then remember that it's supposed to be a toe.
00:09:22 It could have been just a little lack of focus there.
00:09:25 I mean, it's been a long year for you.
00:09:28 It's like, maybe I didn't help you,
00:09:31 but I thought you did a good job this year of keeping yourself going.
00:09:34 Yeah.
00:09:35 Motivating words from her coach, Jason, saying it's a long year.
00:09:39 It hasn't been an easy one.
00:09:41 The score is 77.66 for Gabrielle Jugnot from Kelowna.
00:09:47 That's third in the free program with a 122.61 total score for the competition that fall.
00:09:53 That puts her currently in the stage of the competition in the first place.
00:09:57 Our next competitor represents Ontario out of the Hamilton Skating Club,
00:10:15 16 year old Michelle Lee.
00:10:17 Coached by Bryce Davison and Jen Jackson, skating to enemies to lovers.

00:13:58 There you go, Caitlin.
00:14:05 What a nice program.
00:14:06 Well, what an amazing story for her this year.
00:14:09 Only getting back in September after three years off,
00:14:13 wanting to come back to skating to prove that she could do academics
00:14:16 and skating at the exact same time.
00:14:18 And she missed it.
00:14:19 She wanted to perform again.
00:14:21 And she had that ease of not having any expectations this year,
00:14:25 just seeing what could happen.
00:14:27 And she kept that calm.
00:14:29 And look at that smile coming off the ice.
00:14:31 That is a smile of contentment and pride.
00:14:35 How can you not be?
00:14:37 That was such a fantastic program.
00:14:39 Of course, there was a couple little errors here and there.
00:14:42 But I'm just amazed at how calm she was through the entire thing.
00:14:47 She took it one step at a time and focused on each thing that she had to.
00:14:52 Great job.
00:14:54 You can see that focus off the top of the program,
00:15:02 really looking at the choreography.
00:15:04 And here is that triple lutz.
00:15:05 She made the mistake on this in the short program,
00:15:07 even though it is her favorite jump.
00:15:08 Nice and quick to rotate feet together.
00:15:11 It was under review.
00:15:13 But it is good, just a little careful on the edge.
00:15:18 The flip is under rotated, that one was.
00:15:21 Here's a look at the double axel Euler double flip.
00:15:24 Very well executed.
00:15:27 Showing off great flexibility in lines, in this choreography sequence.
00:15:37 Really great here in stretching through the spin positions.
00:15:41 Working on getting those levels, which comes with time.
00:15:45 Spins are hard.
00:15:47 You were talking about that.
00:15:49 There is a lot of strength and flexibility required.
00:15:51 There is a lot of strength and flexibility required.
00:15:53 And when you are just getting back, you want to focus on seeing what elements
00:15:57 and jumping passes you can get back.
00:15:59 And the spins kind of fall to the wayside a little bit there.
00:16:02 Two spins in a level four.
00:16:04 That last one was a level three.
00:16:06 Not too bad.
00:16:07 Not too bad.
00:16:08 And very happy.
00:16:09 There is Jen Jackson and Bryce Davison, a great coaching crew that turned out
00:16:13 so many good young skaters.
00:16:15 The Hamilton Skating Club.
00:16:16 Out of the Hamilton Skating Club right there.
00:16:19 And that smile is not leaving this young woman's face.
00:16:22 That was a great skate.
00:16:24 Fantastic skate.
00:16:25 Special moment.
00:16:26 And this is only after a few short months back.
00:16:28 We'll be really looking forward to what she can do with another good few months
00:16:33 under her belt for next year.
00:16:35 Yeah, and hopefully she keeps that same attitude of just pure joy of skating,
00:16:40 keeping the expectations low, keep learning, keep improving.
00:16:45 Exactly as Bryce just said, she was under complete control the entire time.
00:16:56 And it's all I could think about.
00:16:59 I was still so amazed how she took her time.
00:17:02 She focused through every single thing.
00:17:04 Nothing was rushed.
00:17:06 Here we go.
00:17:07 Free program score, 91.96.
00:17:10 Of course, that's first in the free program for Michelle Lee
00:17:13 with a total competition score of 139.01.
00:17:16 For the moment, that'll put Michelle into the lead.
00:17:31 Our next competitor, 15-year-old Kara Yun from British Columbia, Yukon,
00:17:36 of the Champs International Skating Center of BC.
00:17:40 Fourth last year as a junior national, competed at the Junior Grand Prix this season.
00:17:47 Made a mistake under rotations in the short program, hurt her.
00:17:50 She's looking to sort of redeem herself in this program.
00:17:53 It's choreographed by Mark Pillay, skating to a beautiful storm.

00:21:17 [music playing]
00:21:42 [applause]
00:21:45 Representing British Columbia, Yukon, Kara Yun.
00:21:53 Started off very strong in that program with the triple loop and the triple flip double toe.
00:21:58 And you could see the determination in her face to get, to prove to everyone what she can do and how she can skate.
00:22:06 And there's a reason why she was fourth last year in this event.
00:22:10 But unfortunately, some of those jumping passes, especially later on in the program, were very awkward, especially that triple flip.
00:22:18 Yeah, it was painful landing.
00:22:21 A little unusual. I hadn't seen her enter that triple flip like that.
00:22:24 And you said the program order was a little bit different on the planned program sheet than what she presented here.
00:22:30 And maybe switch things around a little bit.
00:22:32 You can see, I love her attention to detail on this choreography.
00:22:38 It's really improved since I've seen her last year.
00:22:41 She seems to be a lot more confident on the ice.
00:22:44 And then here's a look at that opening triple lutz.
00:22:47 Really getting high into the air.
00:22:50 Just landing a little far back on her heel, so not able to get the leg back.
00:22:54 And then here, beautiful triple loop. Nice and strong.
00:22:58 And I thought she had it, then she was in.
00:23:00 And then here, triple flip. It was under review, so landing on the quarter.
00:23:05 Great double axel, double axel.
00:23:13 On her planned program, she was planning on doing this after the triple flip and triple lutz.
00:23:18 So just rearranging these three elements.
00:23:20 Here's a look at that triple flip. Very awkward in the air, sliding into the boards.
00:23:24 And then getting herself up and actually going for that last triple lutz.
00:23:29 So that really shows the fight that she has in her.
00:23:31 And she was so close to having it. It just didn't quite have the last bit of energy that she needed.
00:23:37 And caught up to the music, which is interesting, because that took a long time to recover from that flip.
00:23:43 That's knowing your music and knowing where to catch up, and that's training.
00:23:47 She has a smile on her face, which is good, because before she would absorb herself in the disappointment.
00:24:00 I think she's learning now to put things in perspective.
00:24:02 It's a long journey. These skaters will emerge in their own time.
00:24:06 Some will start early and maybe falter later in their career.
00:24:09 Some will struggle along early on and then rise near the end.
00:24:14 We'll see. Takes many years for all these skaters.
00:24:18 Exactly. And she knows. She knows what she can do.
00:24:22 She knows that she can do these triple lutzes.
00:24:24 She knows that she can do the triple triple combination, which she did in the short program.
00:24:28 Now it's just finding the confidence of those jumps in competition to make sure they're not tight and rotating a little short on rotation.
00:24:37 And then also trusting it later on in the program when you're just a little bit more tired.
00:24:42 And then knowing how to control the fight.
00:24:46 Yeah, exactly.
00:24:48 When you're determined and you want to do it so badly, sometimes you want it just a little too much.
00:24:54 Yeah, you've got to find where that energy is.
00:24:56 You want to have the energy to push yourself forward with that determination, but you don't want to take that over the top.
00:25:01 And it's a fine balance.
00:25:03 Yeah, and you're bouncing on a one inch blade. Half an inch blade.
00:25:08 Yeah, maybe half an inch.
00:25:11 You know, when you're coming down out of the air and landing on a few centimeters of steel with speed.
00:25:18 It's quite impressive.
00:25:20 Beautiful, but it's not easy.
00:25:24 Good job by both Neil and Joanne to put a smile on her face and put things in perspective.
00:25:29 It's a long journey and to do all the elements, but doing them in the program.
00:25:35 And there's a lot. There's two triple lutzes, two triple flips.
00:25:38 For a lot of these skaters, there's a lot of difficult elements that take time to master all at once.
00:25:43 It's a very tough technically program.
00:25:50 But it can compete with the seniors at that point.
00:25:54 You can see she's not only looking at competing within Canada, she's looking to expand internationally also.
00:26:00 And you're going to have to do triple lutz, triple toe, triple flip.
00:26:03 You have to do all those things if you're going to compete internationally.
00:26:06 And while you're learning that, you're going to fault it along the way because it takes time.
00:26:10 So, you're on the right pathway.
00:26:13 And everything is a learning experience.
00:26:15 Whether the program goes amazingly well or has those errors, taking whatever you do and learning from it.
00:26:22 So, my question to you is when you had your best program, what did you learn from it?
00:26:26 Or did you just enjoy it?
00:26:27 Oh, that one I just enjoyed.
00:26:29 Okay, see, there you go. So, when you have the great program, you enjoy it.
00:26:32 But then at the same time, when you had a good program, you can see where your brain was at, what went well, what didn't.
00:26:38 It was a great program. There's always things you can learn.
00:26:41 Okay.
00:26:44 Free program scores for Cara Young, 82.46.
00:26:48 That is second in the free program with a total competition score of 129.61.
00:26:53 And that will put Cara currently in the second place at this stage of the competition.
00:26:58 Our next competitor represents Quebec, 16-year-old Nellianne Gagné.
00:27:13 Nellianne Gagné!
00:27:15 16th place at Skate Canada Challenge.
00:27:19 Fourth place, pardon me, Yvan Desjardins, the coach.
00:27:24 Choreography by Joey Russell.
00:27:26 Skating the free program, Kimuna Tsanata.

00:31:09 [Applause]
00:31:18 Well, that's more of a skate that Nellianne was looking for.
00:31:22 And she is such a fighter, and you could see that going into every single element in that program.
00:31:29 She was not going down without a fight here today.
00:31:31 What a lovely skater. Beautiful flexibility, elegant, no question, and soft with certain movements, strong with others.
00:31:37 Lifts off the ice with a huge explosion on the takeoffs, carries good air.
00:31:42 And sometimes a little funny in the air on rotation.
00:31:44 Some were really tight, some were really loose.
00:31:46 But, wow, lots and lots of potential.
00:31:50 She is so hard on herself. She wants perfection.
00:31:53 She wants to be one of the best in the world.
00:31:57 And for her to get off the ice with a smile on her face, that is super big.
00:32:03 Hey!
00:32:05 Still not there. A little bit of a knot.
00:32:09 It's there. I think she might be going through the program now.
00:32:13 Because there were, yes, problems with the GOE, a little bobbles here and there on each of the elements.
00:32:19 But, she is a strong competitor.
00:32:23 And she is willing to fight.
00:32:25 So here is a look at her first jumping pass to the triple lutz.
00:32:28 Double toe. So much height and distance on these jumps.
00:32:34 Triple sow. Yeah, triple sow. Triple toe.
00:32:38 And there are the little negative GOEs.
00:32:41 So the low landing positions, not stretching them out fully.
00:32:44 The hands down fighting through this jump combination.
00:32:47 To make sure that she doesn't have to do it later in the program.
00:32:50 Just get it done there.
00:32:52 Her axels, these look like her least comfortable element.
00:32:56 They are a little bit tighter.
00:32:58 It's the only jump that takes off forward.
00:33:00 So it does require a little bit more patience.
00:33:02 And they are tricky elements.
00:33:04 But then here her spins have fantastic flexibility.
00:33:08 Lines, stretching through her arms.
00:33:11 Nice pointed toe.
00:33:13 And then obviously great flexibility to demonstrate in this Buhlmann position.
00:33:19 And you still have a great Buhlmann as well.
00:33:26 The flexibility but also the strength.
00:33:28 And how often, you know, for the back you have to be careful not to do it too much in training.
00:33:33 And also lifting your leg properly.
00:33:36 There is a way, of course it's bending in all sorts of funky directions.
00:33:40 But there's a way to do it properly that will protect your back.
00:33:44 Okay.
00:33:48 Now you can see she's processed a little bit of this.
00:33:51 Okay, the program was okay.
00:33:54 It's been a rainbow of emotions since the end of that program.
00:33:58 It's like, oh, it's good.
00:34:00 Oh, wait, I did some things.
00:34:01 Oh, wait, no, it was still good.
00:34:11 But great job for her to come back after a few shaky things in the short program.
00:34:18 Getting that triple-triple done today as yesterday she doubled the Saude, double Saude, triple toe.
00:34:26 Just getting a little bit snappier into the air so that she can land a little bit more upright,
00:34:30 stretching through those landing positions.
00:34:33 Free program score 99.53.
00:34:35 That's first in the free program with the total competition score.
00:34:38 And high five there in the Kiss and Cry 1, 47.87.
00:34:42 As Méliane Gagné takes the lead.
00:34:47 Well done.
00:35:00 Our next competitor represents Quebec as well, 15-year-old Megane Delier.
00:35:09 Coached by Yvonne Desjardins.
00:35:14 She started skating at the age of three.
00:35:18 Here she is at nationals in juniors.

00:39:13 A lot of fantastic moments in that program, but just not quite enough later on in the program.
00:39:18 Things got a little bit tight.
00:39:20 She started overthinking a little bit, but such a beautiful skater.
00:39:23 Great lines, great spins, great flexibility.
00:39:26 She has a lot of talent.
00:39:29 I think she might be hurting a little bit.
00:39:31 Lost her coordination a little bit.
00:39:34 Halfway through the program, started to pop the landings, take off on a lean, open up.
00:39:41 It's great when it's going great, when mistakes are happening.
00:39:46 That's the learning process on how to stay focused and not let those mistakes take over.
00:39:52 You have to learn to feel when you've made a mistake of what the correction is going down the ice.
00:39:57 That's a hard thing when you're taking disappointment as well.
00:40:01 At the same time, the emotion overrides the rational thought at times.
00:40:08 You see those beautiful lines. She really stretches all the way up.
00:40:11 Nice soft hands, great posture.
00:40:17 Then here, this opening triple sal, double axel.
00:40:24 You see that nice tall back on the landing positions, nice stretch.
00:40:29 Here's her triple flip, just squeaking out that landing, triple flip, double toe, double loop.
00:40:35 I thought the program was going to go so well after that.
00:40:38 It does have great things here. Here's a look at that triple toe.
00:40:42 That triple toe under rotated.
00:40:48 That loop went on a lean, and that's when it started to have some challenges in the takeoffs of the rest of the elements.
00:40:55 We may not see those, but it started to unravel a little bit.
00:40:58 Exactly. The left arm just started getting a little bit more out of control, really leading the jump instead of her controlling the jump.
00:41:08 The double axel slipped off the takeoff, resulting in a popped axel landing down on her knee.
00:41:13 You see the spin. She's really working on getting each and every point she possibly can.
00:41:19 Level 4 combination spin, level 4 flying combination spin.
00:41:23 You can see the disappointment. She knows what she can do.
00:41:30 With every skater, except the ones that skate really well, you see this process of the situation processing what just happened,
00:41:42 and the rollercoaster of emotions, of joy for some things and disappointment for others,
00:41:48 and the coaches working through them here on TV, really, in front of everyone.
00:41:54 But it is a process that happens. You've been through it before, and the coaches, and you've been through it as a coach,
00:41:58 trying to help encourage your skater to process and deal with what had just happened as they move forward.
00:42:05 Of course. The minute you get off the ice, the first thing that's going to come to your mind is those mistakes.
00:42:11 They're going to be strong in the back of your head, and then you've got to look, reevaluate, look at what went well,
00:42:18 and how to improve on the things that you know you can do.
00:42:26 That's why she's upset. She wouldn't be as upset if she didn't know how to do these elements.
00:42:29 Yeah, for sure. And I think you have to find, well, what went wrong? Did I lose my focus? Did I lose my concentration?
00:42:35 You try to identify, not reasons, I suppose, but situations as to what concentration you may have lost,
00:42:44 or physically were you tired, or whatever the case may be.
00:42:47 Because you need to understand those things as you train for the next year or the next competition.
00:42:52 Exactly. And as I said, these programs are longer, three and a half minutes,
00:42:56 trying to keep your focus for that length of time, and then moving on, trying to reevaluate.
00:43:02 And then if you don't trust your training, if there's something there that makes you hesitate, there's no time to hesitate.
00:43:11 A three and a half minute shift in hockey is a long shift. Well, I've never seen that three and a half minute shift.
00:43:15 I don't think they do that. No, they don't. Two minutes. Two minutes maybe.
00:43:18 But then having to look good as well, and before you know it, all the things that come with skating.
00:43:24 I say hockey players don't look good.
00:43:29 Waiting for the scores here. A number of the elements were under-reviewed.
00:43:33 Some under-rotation on the triple flip combo, under-rotation on the triple loop.
00:43:38 And some spins that were level two.
00:43:45 Let's take a look at the score. 79.96. That is fifth in the free program with 128.70.
00:43:52 Total score for the competition, that will put the game currently in the fourth place at this stage.
00:43:58 And now, let's get together and welcome the new class.

00:44:46 Okay, do you have a prediction? No. I really don't.
00:44:52 This is going to be a fight to the finish in this group.
00:44:57 Anything can happen. They're all so close in scores, and they all have such amazing abilities.
00:45:05 But as we've seen in this competition so far, you've got to get it done.
00:45:12 You have to just do it. We haven't seen anyone lay a difficult clean program at this point of the competition.
00:45:21 Megan Woodley, she was really strong in the short program, of course.
00:45:24 And so was Alexa Volkova. But I haven't seen Alexa do two programs, really strong programs.
00:45:29 I've seen a great strong free program or in a week short, but she has the ability, both technically and in performance.
00:45:38 And of course, Lulu Lin here, she had such an amazing jump program yesterday.
00:45:43 But then the unfortunate flying sit incident where she ended up getting no points at all for the flying sit.
00:45:50 So that is why she finds herself here in third place.
00:45:55 But she won challenge leading into this competition. And you know, she's not going to do it.
00:46:00 Yeah, well, it's less than three points out of first place. So that's like nothing.
00:46:03 So that would have been the flying sit yesterday.
00:46:10 If you look at Lucille, she won novice last year, first year junior.
00:46:21 A little wild on that jump by Lulu.
00:46:28 Alexa has such quick rotation. She can really do that toe from anywhere.
00:46:32 Yeah, really. And great extension on the landings as well.
00:46:36 Nice third program.
00:46:48 It's a look at Sabrina. It was a look at Sabrina.
00:46:52 Ninth at challenge and then Reese Rose, she is a performer. She loves to be in front of an audience.
00:46:58 She was having quite a few issues on that triple Lutz that she fell on yesterday.
00:47:02 So let's see how that goes today. She's a she's a powerhouse on the ice.
00:47:14 You can see the I don't know if the word is anxious, but the anxiousness, perhaps of all the skaters, you know, they're in the sixth minute, they're in the final group.
00:47:21 They all have a shot at this. Controlling that emotion, allowing the emotion to fuel the excitement and the energy.
00:47:29 But keeping it in control so you can control your body and your mind in competition.
00:47:34 Such a fine balance. There's like a man Megan Woodley's triple flip with the arms above the head.
00:47:41 Nice tight rotating position. Unfortunately, neither have to go back to the coaches to get some last minute key point reminders.
00:47:48 Yeah. Some keywords, you know, many coaches and skaters work with keywords to so that you don't overthink.
00:47:56 Yeah. A few quick things to think about because that's all you got time for.
00:48:04 Great triple flip there by Lucille triple flip double toe.
00:48:11 Kelly, she's grown a lot since last year.
00:48:14 Also, yeah. Look at Alexis triple flip.
00:48:23 I love how quick she gets into that rotating position.
00:48:27 It's just so efficient, able to hold those landing positions with control.
00:48:32 She has amazing posture and, you know, the experiences this year in the Junior Grand Prix and the challenge event.
00:48:39 Hopefully that's going to give her some confidence to get two programs and a good short program.
00:48:44 Get a free program here tonight.
00:48:46 Of course, Alexa is last year's junior women's bronze medalist behind Tedeschi and Rose Theroux, who are now both competing senior.
00:48:55 So she's going to look to claim that spot.
00:48:57 We'll see them a little later this week, of course.
00:49:05 Looking forward to the seniors starting their practices on Thursday, competition Friday and Saturday.
00:49:11 We'll be here to catch all the action.
00:49:15 Are you going to stay?
00:49:18 Well, it's cold here.
00:49:20 Yeah, it is cold.
00:49:22 Beautiful position using her arms as choreography, adding a little flair.
00:49:35 And that's what separates the top skaters from the rest of the field is is not just doing the job, but looking to add for G.O.E.
00:49:44 in every possible aspect.
00:49:46 So those beautiful stretch landing positions, the extras that you wouldn't necessarily think about when you're still learning the element.
00:49:55 But once you have that element solidified.
00:50:00 There's another look at the starting order for this event.
00:50:03 Lucille Yang, Stavrina Aranetis.
00:50:08 I can't speak anymore.
00:50:10 Thank you.
00:50:11 Reese Rose, Lulu Lin, Alexa Volkova and Megan Woodley.
00:50:16 I need help with pronunciations.
00:50:18 Anyone know?
00:50:20 Not easy, especially when you're in the Junior Grand Prix.
00:50:23 There's so many different federations, so many different countries.
00:50:30 And taking their last minute to just relax into the ice.
00:50:36 Such a big reminder that you're not going to learn anything new on a warm up.
00:50:40 No, warm up is just for that.
00:50:42 Just warm up.
00:50:43 It might not be perfect.
00:50:44 Sometimes it's better if it's not perfect.
00:50:47 You know, it's interesting.
00:50:48 We were talking about that in synchronized skating.
00:50:49 You know, here they have a six minute warm up synchronized team.
00:50:52 They don't have that one.
00:50:53 They get on the ice.
00:50:54 They've got like 30 seconds or a minute.
00:50:55 That's it.
00:50:56 They compete.
00:50:57 They get off.
00:50:58 Would that be nice, though?
00:50:59 Maybe.
00:51:00 Well, risky.
00:51:01 I don't know.
00:51:02 It's not easy.
00:51:03 That's for sure.
00:51:04 Synchronized skating.
00:51:05 We'll see more of that tomorrow and on Friday.
00:51:09 Here we go.
00:51:10 Final group in the women's free program.
00:51:12 Lucille is 14 years old out of the Gloucester Skating Club.
00:51:26 Coached by Darlene Joseph.
00:51:27 Choreographed by Julie Breaux.
00:51:30 And she'll skate the free program to Adios Nonino.

00:55:02 (audience applauding)
00:55:19 - Well, two distinctly different parts of the program,
00:55:21 a great start to this program,
00:55:23 and then things began to unravel a little bit
00:55:25 partway through.
00:55:27 - Exactly.
00:55:27 The start of her program showed
00:55:30 why she was last year's novice champion.
00:55:33 She has these great jumping passes with speed and flow,
00:55:38 but then just ran out of steam or focus or...
00:55:42 Just, it's a long program.
00:55:45 - Well, when the program is going so well
00:55:47 and you're taking it for granted,
00:55:48 you have good rhythm, good timing,
00:55:50 but then you make one mistake,
00:55:51 then you get a little bit nervous,
00:55:53 and then you wonder.
00:55:54 - Yeah.
00:55:55 - Rather than getting back to the rhythm.
00:55:56 And it's really hard.
00:55:56 It's a skill that you have to learn,
00:55:58 and you only learn that through these types of experiences.
00:56:01 And let's take a look at some of the elements here, Caitlin.
00:56:04 - Here's a look at that opening,
00:56:09 jumping past the triple flip, double toe.
00:56:12 Not quite around on this flip,
00:56:14 landing on the quarter,
00:56:15 straight into the double toe.
00:56:17 And then here, heading straight down the ice
00:56:21 for the triple lutz.
00:56:22 Lots of height, feet are glued together
00:56:25 into a double axel.
00:56:27 Just so much patience between those two jumps.
00:56:30 - That was her best combo.
00:56:31 - And then here again, this beautiful triple loop,
00:56:35 getting the job done.
00:56:36 And then things just started going a little sideways.
00:56:40 Literally.
00:56:41 The right arm gets a little ahead of herself,
00:56:44 so not able to catch up,
00:56:48 not able to snap into the rotating position
00:56:50 as fast as she did at the beginning of the program.
00:56:55 Great lines on these spins.
00:56:58 Great flexibility.
00:56:59 - But you could see as the elements started
00:57:04 to unravel a little bit,
00:57:08 I don't want to say the disappointment,
00:57:09 the effort was not, not the effort,
00:57:11 but the excitement was not there.
00:57:14 The energy was lost.
00:57:15 - Exactly.
00:57:16 Of course, when you fall on a jump,
00:57:20 it's like the wing gets knocked out of you.
00:57:21 Sometimes literally, but sometimes just emotionally,
00:57:25 the wing gets knocked out of you.
00:57:26 And then you want to put in that little bit of extra,
00:57:28 you want to put in the adrenaline,
00:57:30 but then you're fighting with the adrenaline to stay focused
00:57:33 and it's just not quite there.
00:57:34 - It's complicated.
00:57:35 - Still smiling in the kiss and cry, proud of what she did.
00:57:43 This is her first year junior.
00:57:46 So still, this year was for a learning experience.
00:57:51 Next year is when I'll look out.
00:57:55 Or I won't, 'cause I'm not there,
00:57:57 but other people should look out.
00:57:59 - Oh, you can see a little Gloucester skating club shirt
00:58:04 or vest or something on the bear.
00:58:09 - Now I got to have a little mascot.
00:58:12 - Darlene Joseph done such a wonderful job with that club
00:58:18 and many skaters at the national championship
00:58:20 and a person who brings, you know,
00:58:25 not just coaching expertise,
00:58:27 but guidance of people and their growth
00:58:29 and their maturity and their patience.
00:58:32 - I think that's our word of the week.
00:58:35 - Patience. - Absolutely.
00:58:36 Here's the score, 91.02.
00:58:40 That is third in the free skate for Lucille
00:58:43 with a total competition score of 140.05.
00:58:46 And that will put Lucille Yang
00:58:48 currently in the second place.
00:58:50 (announcer speaking in foreign language)
00:58:54 With five skaters to come.
00:58:55 The next competitor represents Quebec,
00:59:04 15-year-old Stavrina Aranidis.
00:59:08 She began skating at the age of four.
00:59:10 It's ninth at the challenge event in Winnipeg.
00:59:15 Choreographed by Marc Pelé.

01:03:18 - Well, that was impressive.
01:03:20 - That was so impressive.
01:03:21 I just became a big fan of Sabrina.
01:03:23 - Yeah.
01:03:24 Power all the way, great acceleration,
01:03:26 speed throughout the program,
01:03:28 powerful jumping, just distance,
01:03:30 the height on all those jumps, really amazing.
01:03:34 - The best part about her jumping passes
01:03:36 is that they don't leave room for question.
01:03:38 - Yeah.
01:03:39 - That is what you wanna make sure you do on these jumps.
01:03:41 You don't want the judges to look at them,
01:03:44 to re-look at them, to review them.
01:03:46 - To re-look at them.
01:03:47 - To re-look at them.
01:03:48 You want them to say, "Wow,"
01:03:50 give you the remarks and then move on.
01:03:51 - Yeah.
01:03:52 Big smile, you could see she is thrilled
01:03:54 with that performance.
01:03:55 Sorry, go ahead, Caitlin.
01:03:56 - No, I'm just, I'm excited.
01:03:58 (both laughing)
01:04:00 I am looking forward to seeing some of these jumping passes
01:04:02 again in the review.
01:04:04 We'll see if she's happy about that,
01:04:07 deservedly happy about that.
01:04:09 - That looked like a moment in her life
01:04:13 when it all came together.
01:04:15 - And even though there were a few errors here and there,
01:04:20 it didn't--

01:04:28 a single axle Euler triple sow,
01:04:31 and it just flew across the ice.
01:04:34 And then again, going into this triple flip,

01:04:39 in unison at the end of that.

01:10:43 - Such a strong beginning of the program.
01:10:46 I was even thinking, and I said to you,
01:10:48 this is one of the best programs
01:10:49 that I've seen from Reese Rose,

01:10:57 It's really beautiful to watch.
01:10:59 And then a few little funky jumping passes.

01:11:36 She holds her head so high when she skates.
01:11:40 (crowd cheering)
01:11:42 Looking so comfortable out there.
01:11:44 And then here's a look at this opening triple toe,
01:11:46 double toe, you see how much it crosses the ice there,
01:11:49 a lot of speed and power.
01:11:50 And then here's a look at that triple up.
01:11:52 She's been really struggling on that this week.
01:11:54 Awkward fall in the long program.
01:11:55 She tried to squeeze it out, but it did miss,
01:11:58 under, it is under rotated.
01:12:01 And then here, a look at the triple flip,
01:12:03 coming back nice and strong,
01:12:04 nice strong back on the landing.
01:12:06 And then here, look at the triple south,
01:12:09 double axle, single axle.
01:12:11 It's a little around the circle.
01:12:13 You really want to see those jumps travel
01:12:16 through the ice a little bit more, but good job.
01:12:19 And then here connecting with the music again,
01:12:22 midway through the program.
01:12:23 Great job on the spins, level four flying camel,
01:12:28 level four change combination spin,
01:12:31 oh, level three change combination spin, sorry.
01:12:33 And a level three flying sit at the end of the program.
01:12:37 (crowd cheering)
01:12:39 But right at the end, you can see that smile

01:12:42 So you're right, it's a really good point.
01:12:44 You don't know the skaters goals.
01:12:46 I mean, we might see mistakes,
01:12:48 but this overall program was still a great success
01:12:50 for the skater along their journey.
01:12:53 - Exactly, and I've seen Rhi skate countless times
01:12:56 and I've seen mistakes happen and then continue to happen.
01:12:59 So very good job for her to still fight back
01:13:02 after each and every jump.
01:13:04 And yeah, like I said, some of the jumps,
01:13:05 like the triple loop, triple loop midway through the program
01:13:09 and the triple toe later on in the program,
01:13:11 they just had a little bit extra height to them.
01:13:14 And when she came down, the ankle wasn't fully strong
01:13:16 and it kind of wobbled underneath her
01:13:18 and it's kind of hard to land on a wobbly ankle.
01:13:20 - But so the takeoff was good, the rotation was good,
01:13:22 the landings had a little shake on it.
01:13:24 But another skater out of the Gloucester Skating Club.

01:19:39 and you see, this is the skating free that you said.

01:19:47 There's a look at that opening at triple lutz,

01:19:52 Very well executing, see the circle continued
01:19:57 on the same easy pattern,
01:19:58 which the judges are looking for,
01:19:59 and then again, I believe this triple lutz
01:20:01 was even better than the first one,
01:20:03 just getting a little bit more height.
01:20:05 Then here, her triple loop, again,
01:20:08 lots of height in the air, lots of time to come out
01:20:11 and check out for the landing.
01:20:14 And there's the triple flip, strong back on the landing.
