00:04:17 All three Canadians in group one of it,
00:04:19 as we take a look.
00:04:20 The start order from seven to 12,
00:04:24 and that will be the top group, I would imagine.
00:04:27 - As based on ISU ranking points,
00:04:30 and so the more points you have,
00:04:31 the later you skate,
00:04:32 and you see world silver medalist,
00:04:34 Jen Huan Cha,
00:04:36 in that final position to start.
00:04:38 - You've been watching the practice sessions
00:04:39 over the past two days.
00:04:41 Give us a little bit of your feeling about this,
00:04:44 this field of 12.
00:04:45 - Well, you know, some of the skaters traveled a while.
00:04:49 I imagine the Japanese team,
00:04:50 you know, having to travel over many, many time zones.
00:04:52 And I always found that the hardest,
00:04:54 traveling from Asia to North America.
00:04:56 So it took them some time to get their legs underneath them.
00:04:59 But afterwards, some spectacular jumps,
00:05:01 spectacular skating,
00:05:03 and as the other entries,
00:05:05 be very competitive as well.
00:05:07 Lots of competition for places on the podium,
00:05:10 and places at the top of that podium as well.
00:05:12 - There's the first group about to take the ice.
00:05:15 Just loosening themselves up as they get introduced.
00:05:19 Here we go.

00:06:18 So let's talk a little bit about what you saw
00:06:21 in the practice session.
00:06:22 - Well, Canadians are looking fairly strong
00:06:26 with their technical elements now.
00:06:28 We were watching the screens,
00:06:29 we didn't get to see everything.
00:06:30 I saw some good triple axels from Conrad,
00:06:32 some beautiful quad toe, triple toes from Wesley,
00:06:35 and a clean long program.
00:06:37 Last minute entrant didn't phase Alexa.
00:06:41 Rock solid in practice as well.
00:06:43 - Conrad made a great breakthrough last season,
00:06:47 grabbing the silver medal at the national championships
00:06:49 in the United Kingdom.
00:06:50 Messing trains now in Edmonton under Ravi Walia.
00:06:55 And I was speaking with Ravi a little earlier today,
00:06:59 Kevin, he was talking about his growth and maturity,
00:07:03 performance level, and he's wanting to be more consistent
00:07:06 on the technical elements this season.
00:07:08 Has been so far, at least in practice,
00:07:10 according to Ravi, so hoping to deliver that.
00:07:13 - I think that's true of all the Canadian men.
00:07:15 They have the technical goods, they're building,
00:07:17 they're skating quality, building performance qualities,
00:07:20 putting down two strong programs back to back,
00:07:23 gaining the confidence associated with that.
00:07:25 - Alexa Drakic had a great start of the season last year,
00:07:30 and good so far this season with a good result in overstore.
00:07:35 And looking to have a nice strong clean skate
00:07:37 in the short program as we look at Leanne Kapika.
00:07:39 Kapika's probably in the United States.
00:07:41 - Unlike Wesley, he trains in the Canadian Skating Club
00:07:45 in Richmond, not too far away, with coach Eileen Murphy.
00:07:49 So, got some extra training underneath him.
00:07:53 Hometown skater, swinging that competitive fire.
00:07:57 - He's had some challenges early on in this season,
00:07:59 but he had a great year last year,
00:08:01 I think with four at the US Nationals.
00:08:04 - He's got some strong jumping skills as well,
00:08:07 showcasing beautiful triple axels in practice.
00:08:10 - Mark Gododnitsky from Israel,
00:08:16 such a strong technical skater.
00:08:18 He's had a little up and down throughout his season,
00:08:21 throughout his career.
00:08:22 He's had a couple brilliant performances
00:08:24 and some challenging ones as well,
00:08:26 and seems to be getting stronger as time goes on,
00:08:29 more consistency.
00:08:31 - Well, he's had a good start to his season,
00:08:33 including a podium finish at one of his Challenger Series
00:08:36 events, and consistency is his strength.
00:08:40 Mikhail Shaidorov, surprised a lot of people, I think.
00:08:45 Seemed like coming out of nowhere,
00:08:48 landing a bunch of quads in his programs,
00:08:50 going a little slower than most to do it.
00:08:53 He's growing his performance qualities,
00:08:56 growing his skating skills.
00:08:57 You can see the technical proficiency
00:08:59 trains with Alexey Irminov.
00:09:02 - 1994 Olympic champion.
00:09:05 (announcer speaking)
00:09:08 Beautiful short program at the Autumn Classic,
00:09:13 not too long ago.
00:09:15 Take a look, he's swimming with a nice triple toe,
00:09:20 some beautiful quad toes in practice today.
00:09:23 - Yeah, Wesley's made great improvement
00:09:28 in his program component scores as well,
00:09:30 and a lot will ride on, of course, the quads
00:09:34 and the triple axles to just be in the game,
00:09:36 because then the rest of the program shines
00:09:38 when those technical elements have been delivered.
00:09:42 - There you saw a beautiful quad sal,
00:09:43 triple toe from Conrad, he's looking on as well.
00:09:47 You know, you always say you can't win it
00:09:49 in the short program, Ted.
00:09:51 You can certainly lose it, and the high risk you take,
00:09:54 some of these skaters, including Conrad,
00:09:55 trying two quads in the short program.
00:09:59 Gotta be sharp, not just on one element,
00:10:01 but on all of the elements.
00:10:02 Skating first, Conrad Will, how did you feel
00:10:04 about skating first half of the,
00:10:06 well, in the short program, let's say.
00:10:07 - Well, I think it's always tough to set the pace,
00:10:09 so to speak, in being the first skater out.
00:10:11 You have to be pretty confident
00:10:13 with what you've done in practice.
00:10:15 Now, he's looking pretty good in this warmup.
00:10:18 It's about keeping his nerves under control.
00:10:20 Fall silent, and the music starts.
00:10:24 - Take a look at Alexa.
00:10:25 The quad toe, get that done nicely.
00:10:31 - You know, he was struggling with the consistency
00:10:33 on that last year somewhat.
00:10:35 Not this season, he's been looking really solid on that.
00:10:38 Some beautiful quad toes, as you saw there.
00:10:41 In the warmup, nice triple axel from William.
00:10:44 (crowd cheering)
00:10:44 You can see the deep knee bend to absorb the force
00:10:47 on the landing.
00:10:48 - Yeah, right out of the spread eagle as well.
00:10:50 - Everyone's looking pretty on in this warmup, Ted, I think.
00:10:55 It's a good sign of things to come.
00:10:59 Nice and easy triple axel, unique entrance.
00:11:02 And Mark has it going in, but it works for him.
00:11:04 - And that was the jump, one jump that you,
00:11:07 was not your favorite jump.
00:11:09 - It took me a long time to get that feel of
00:11:12 deep knee bend on the forward edge and the acceleration.
00:11:15 I always liked the back break, deep jumps.
00:11:18 Sows and toes from Mike.
00:11:20 - Yeah.
00:11:21 - Kiel is scheduled to do,
00:11:25 want Lutz to open his short program.
00:11:27 (crowd cheering)
00:11:29 - There it was.
00:11:30 - A little off, he landed it earlier today,
00:11:32 but he's getting the feel he's looking for
00:11:35 before he takes the ace from his short program.
00:11:38 - Any of the quads, but like on a quad Lutz,
00:11:42 there's so little for error.
00:11:44 - It's a very precise time, and of course,
00:11:47 you need a strong outside and you're gonna split
00:11:49 on the takeoff to carry the momentum up and across the ice.
00:11:53 And that's a new element for him this season, Ted.
00:11:55 So, I think the ante, not only on his performance qualities,
00:11:59 but on his technical as well.
00:12:01 - Pretty exciting to skate in your hometown,
00:12:10 have a lot of, most of your club here.
00:12:13 Your club mates cheering you on.
00:12:14 Sure to add some, on both sides,
00:12:18 some excitement and some pleasure,
00:12:20 but at the same time, a little pressure as well.
00:12:23 - I think so, it's definitely a unique feeling.
00:12:25 Having done a couple of hometown nationals.
00:12:28 It's trying to light that fire underneath yourself.
00:12:32 You might feel a pressure to do well.
00:12:34 So, you gotta make it feel like a competition.
00:12:37 - Here we go, men's short program.
00:12:39 The final event here on day one at Skate Canada.
00:12:41 Of course, the practice sessions early in the morning,
00:12:50 then the competition, it's a long day.
00:12:52 We start around seven, eight o'clock,
00:12:53 all the way until we finish around nine or 9.30.
00:12:58 Our first competitor represents Canada,
00:12:59 - Conrad Orzel.
00:13:01 - Conrad Orzel.
00:13:02 He's a Nevington 23 years old,
00:13:05 coached by Ravi Walia.
00:13:06 Season's best 77.45,
00:13:10 earning that at the Nepela Memorial this season.
00:13:13 26th at the World Championships last year.
00:13:18 He'll skate to Carmina Burana.

00:16:29 one of the best quad toes to have ever seen him do.
00:16:32 Just seemed to lose a little steam
00:16:33 in the second half of this performance.
00:16:35 - Yeah, well that triple axel,
00:16:37 he looked a little tight
00:16:38 because he knew he had a clean program going.
00:16:40 Really dynamic program and that quad toe was amazing.
00:16:43 One of the triple axel to complete a clean program,
00:16:46 just tighten up on the takeoff a bit.
00:16:48 - Sometimes you just want it so bad.
00:16:50 Taking a little extra pause going in.
00:16:53 Perhaps changed his rhythm, changed his timing.
00:16:55 He did so many of these,
00:16:56 including the short program run through this morning.
00:17:01 Look at the opening quad salchow combination.
00:17:04 Look at the height on the takeoff.
00:17:06 He's losing a bit of speed and opting to do
00:17:08 the double toe in the back half of that combination.
00:17:11 Here's what we were saying, Ted.
00:17:14 The timing perfection of takeoff.
00:17:17 Look at the amplitude of that.
00:17:19 Airtime to spare, solid landing.
00:17:22 No problem at all.
00:17:23 This one he took a long look at going in.
00:17:27 So you can see the lean he had on the takeoff.
00:17:30 Didn't get the height
00:17:31 he normally gets on that.
00:17:32 Seeing a strong push on the takeoff.
00:17:36 - It'll be the last jumping element.
00:17:40 Less damage from the perspective.
00:17:42 It didn't affect his performance.
00:17:43 If it was early on, it's hard to keep your spirits up.
00:17:47 - It is and you know, the music is really demanding
00:17:49 in terms of the energy you have to give.
00:17:51 And I just thought, you know, with that mistake,
00:17:53 he lost some of it towards the end of the performance.
00:17:56 (crowd applauding)
00:18:01 But I think he certainly showed some improvement
00:18:03 from last season.
00:18:04 He's looking really good with the quads.
00:18:06 Intense performance.
00:18:08 - Definitely and I thought that he had improved his spins
00:18:11 as Walt said.
00:18:12 You didn't get to see it very much in the replays,
00:18:14 but his camel position, the extension that he showed,
00:18:16 the speed that he had, the centering that he had,
00:18:19 which improved from last season.
00:18:20 - Two out of the three spins were at level four,
00:18:22 which they weren't last season.
00:18:24 Flying camel spin was level three, but--
00:18:26 - The scores please.
00:18:29 - Season's best 77.45, will he beat that right now?
00:18:33 He does.
00:18:34 Season's best is 77.68 for Skater Out.
00:18:38 Probably wondering what that triple axel would have done.
00:18:43 - The score would have been huge,
00:18:44 but still a season's best nonetheless.

00:23:52 So his personal best score is going to be a little bit higher.
00:23:54 >> I think on the strength of his non-jumping elements along with the triple axel,
00:23:58 getting that triple triple in the second half, I think he might well indeed.

00:40:55 Yeah, and just for those fans that are in the building, if you're listening on SmartBug Radio, that first element was a quad lutz, so it looked so easy like a triple.
