00:00:00 goes into Kissing You by Sam Smith.
00:00:03 It's a newer version of the song,
00:00:06 so I'm really excited to kind of show that.
00:00:10 And yeah, overall, the program is very lyrical.
00:00:13 I think that's one of my strengths as a skater.
00:00:17 So I'm really excited just kind of building that and making
00:00:21 that more mature.
00:00:23 And yeah, at the end, there's kind of a different hip hop
00:00:26 you take to it, which is really fun.
00:00:29 So yeah, I'm really excited to skate that program.
00:00:31 How much input do you bring to these programs?
00:00:35 Or do you come with ideas, or do they come?
00:00:37 How do you decide what it's going to be?
00:00:40 So I'd have to say most of the work comes from Joey.
00:00:44 But I kind of have a say in what kind of direction
00:00:49 I want to go with the program.
00:00:51 And usually Joey is the one that really finds the music
00:00:55 and brings it together, kind of like with the different cuts
00:00:58 and the story that we want to tell.
00:01:00 Do you feel like you're having more of a voice
00:01:04 as you're now a senior skater, and your experience,
00:01:08 and your maturity?
00:01:10 And you have an idea of what you want.
00:01:12 Do you use your voice more?
00:01:13 Or how do you find you're changing
00:01:16 when it comes to this process?
00:01:19 Yeah, definitely, I think as I'm moving into senior
00:01:22 and kind of having a bit more of an understanding
00:01:24 of everything, yeah, I definitely
00:01:28 know a bit more about what I want
00:01:29 and what kind of my goals are in terms
00:01:33 of my skating and my movements.
00:01:38 Talk to me a little bit about-- you're a very artistic skater.
00:01:42 And clearly, you are developing the technical skills as well.
00:01:46 When you're competing and performing,
00:01:49 finding the balance to focus on and concentrate
00:01:53 on the performance aspect of what
00:01:54 you want to get across with the program
00:01:56 and staying also focused on the technical elements
00:01:58 you have to achieve.
00:02:01 How do you train?
00:02:02 How do you prepare for that?
00:02:03 Over the years, I've kind of gotten to a good balance
00:02:07 where if I'm more focused on the choreography
00:02:12 or the performance, my mind is less
00:02:15 concentrated on the jumps, which in turn kind of helps
00:02:19 with the success of the jumps.
00:02:21 I find that when my mind is not really
00:02:24 rambling on the technical parts, yeah, it benefits the jumps.
00:02:31 But it also benefits my skating.
00:02:33 So yeah, it's kind of a win-win situation.
00:02:36 That's an interesting balance because most people
00:02:38 would think you have to focus on the technical to achieve those.
00:02:41 But sometimes just letting your body do what it does is helpful.
00:02:45 Yeah, and you do this every day in training.
00:02:48 So your body pretty much knows what it needs to do.
00:02:50 You just kind of go on autopilot pretty much.
00:02:53 Are you-- do you have pieces of music or themes
00:02:57 that you think, I'd like to do that, but not quite yet?
00:02:59 Yeah, I think the more modern kind of style
00:03:02 is something that I would like to try in the future.
00:03:09 I don't think I'm quite there with the movements
00:03:11 or that type of skating yet.
00:03:15 It's good you're keeping your eyes and your ears
00:03:17 open for some of those possibilities in the future.
00:03:20 So where are you most looking forward
00:03:22 to performing these programs?
00:03:24 Yeah, I'd obviously have to say Skate Canada International.
00:03:28 That competition is in my hometown.
00:03:30 So yeah, really excited to skate in front of a hometown crowd,
00:03:34 kind of show off these programs, get the crowd into it.
00:03:38 And yeah, I really have a connection
00:03:40 in the moment with them.
00:03:42 Well, I'm going to be there.
00:03:43 And I'm going to be looking forward
00:03:44 to watching the connection of these performances
00:03:47 when those happen.
00:03:49 And wishing you the best of luck this season
00:03:51 with these programs and your future.
00:03:54 Thank you for joining us, Wesley.
00:03:56 Thanks for having me.
00:03:56 Hello, everyone.
00:04:01 Welcome to Pierre Fong Quebec and the Autumn Classic
00:04:04 International with an ISU Challenger Series.
00:04:06 I'm your host, Ted Barton, along with my co-host, Joni McPhail.
00:04:08 Joni, yesterday, good day for Canadian skaters.
00:04:11 It was a great day for Canadian skaters.
00:04:13 And I want to say I was surprised,
00:04:15 but I shouldn't be surprised.
00:04:16 But man, that was fun to watch.
00:04:18 Yeah, no question.
00:04:19 Let's get started.
00:04:20 Let's go over the pairs.
00:04:21 So in the pairs events, Cadence Darneski and Rain Eberl
00:04:25 from Regina had a great skate.
00:04:27 They're sitting in fifth place.
00:04:28 First international event.
00:04:29 I'm sure they're thrilled about that.
00:04:31 For me, again, a surprise, not a surprise,
00:04:34 was Emmanuel Proft and Nick Nadeau.
00:04:37 I mean, they have improved so much.
00:04:39 And I was watching them on practice.
00:04:41 But you never know what's going to happen in a competition.
00:04:43 And they had such a good skate.
00:04:45 And I want to say, it's not a surprise for me
00:04:47 because both were excellent single skaters who paired up
00:04:50 last season and had a pretty successful first season.
00:04:53 And it's only gotten better now.
00:04:54 And they skated so strongly and so confidently.
00:04:57 So that was a great start for them.
00:04:58 That was a great start.
00:04:59 Looking forward to seeing more from them.
00:05:02 Also, Deanna Stiletto Dudek and Maxime Deschamps,
00:05:05 I mean, they came out of the gates flying.
00:05:07 And they have worked so hard this off season,
00:05:09 as they have said, on making their elements wow.
00:05:12 And they were wow.
00:05:14 Their speed and their confidence definitely shows.
00:05:17 I had a chance to speak with Deanna a little earlier
00:05:19 this morning.
00:05:20 And she was telling me, I said, that was a great performance.
00:05:22 She said, yeah, well, it was kind of OK.
00:05:24 And I said, well, what was not OK?
00:05:25 She said, I was really stiff in my knees.
00:05:27 But we're pretty pleased with what we did.
00:05:29 And I'm going, wow, that's amazing.
00:05:30 More to come for this team.
00:05:32 She said that they had skated even better
00:05:34 at the national team camp.
00:05:35 So they're really looking forward to a good season.
00:05:37 They are.
00:05:38 And I have to say, I was talking to both Sofia Schaller, who
00:05:41 skates for Austria, and Emmanuel.
00:05:43 And I asked them both, because they're both new pair skaters,
00:05:46 but very accomplished single skaters,
00:05:48 what the hardest thing to learn was.
00:05:50 And for both of them, it was skating with somebody.
00:05:52 And timing, just stroking and skating.
00:05:54 The elements, they could do those.
00:05:56 Those came, but it was actually skating with somebody
00:05:59 was the hardest thing to do.
00:06:00 Yeah, it's like, get out of my zone.
00:06:02 You're bothering me.
00:06:02 Get out of my zone.
00:06:03 So that's a difficult thing to do.
00:06:05 The skills, the throws and all that, that's one thing.
00:06:08 But being beside someone.
00:06:09 But then you start to like it.
00:06:11 I think that for Emmanuel and--
00:06:14 Sofia.
00:06:16 They gain confidence with someone on the ice,
00:06:19 because there's always a little challenge in single skating.
00:06:22 By yourself, you get a little nervous.
00:06:23 But when you have a partner, it makes it a lot easier.
00:06:25 Well, and you have to remember, both Nick and Emmanuel
00:06:28 were doing pairs, but neither skated pairs.
00:06:30 So it's easier, I think, to learn when
00:06:33 your partner has done pairs.
00:06:34 But for both to start--
00:06:36 well, it's a learning curve for both of them.
00:06:38 They've done a great job so far.
00:06:39 We're interested to see what happens with the free program.
00:06:41 OK, before we move on, I also want
00:06:43 to mention Chelsea Liu and Balazs Nagy.
00:06:46 I have not-- that twist, she was--
00:06:49 I think everybody just held their breath
00:06:51 when she went up there.
00:06:52 So now, they're a new pair skating together this season.
00:06:55 They're both pair skaters.
00:06:56 But I'm watching for exciting things from that team.
00:06:59 Yeah, it's early in the season for all these skaters,
00:07:01 single pairs and dance, of course.
00:07:02 And lots will happen and can happen throughout the season
00:07:06 as they gain confidence.
00:07:07 And sometimes, maybe you can get tired,
00:07:09 and mistakes start to creep in.
00:07:11 So this is a good start for a number of teams.
00:07:13 But it's a long ways to go, that's for sure.
00:07:15 The women.
00:07:16 Oh, OK.
00:07:17 No surprise.
00:07:18 Kaori Sakamoto was a standout in the field.
00:07:22 I mean, she is spectacular.
00:07:24 That double axel, she--
00:07:26 entire width of the ice and the speed coming out.
00:07:29 And you can't really see it that much on--
00:07:31 when you're watching on live stream or on television.
00:07:34 It's big, and it's beautiful.
00:07:35 But when you're in a rink, you go, oh, my gosh,
00:07:37 how does a person launch themselves that far
00:07:40 across the ice and the air?
00:07:41 It's really incredible.
00:07:43 Two-time world champion, so not a big surprise.
00:07:45 But tell us a little bit about the program,
00:07:47 because you spoke to her.
00:07:48 Yeah, so I spoke to her.
00:07:49 And this is the first time she's picked her own music.
00:07:52 And I asked her about it.
00:07:54 And she said she had a very special event happen
00:07:57 in her life this year.
00:07:58 And she has a new niece and nephew.
00:08:00 And it was very emotional for her.
00:08:02 And she wanted to do something to commemorate and pay tribute
00:08:07 to that.
00:08:08 So this music is actually from a TV series
00:08:12 about pediatric medicine.
00:08:14 And because she was all wrapped up
00:08:16 in new babies and her new niece and nephew,
00:08:19 she chose this music.
00:08:20 And when she skates to it, it brings her the joy
00:08:23 that she felt.
00:08:23 And she wants everybody to feel that joy.
00:08:25 But it's a Japanese series.
00:08:26 You may not be able to find it.
00:08:27 But it's just amazing that she-- so when
00:08:30 you watch her skate this program, she just--
00:08:33 it's incredible.
00:08:34 Yeah, the music gives you sort of tingles.
00:08:36 And then her skating on top of that, it was really beautiful.
00:08:39 No question.
00:08:40 And Audrey Shin, the United States.
00:08:42 Oh my gosh, she just got stronger and stronger.
00:08:44 If that program went on for two minutes,
00:08:46 she wouldn't have stopped.
00:08:47 Yeah, that's a big improvement Audrey has made.
00:08:49 And you watch out for Audrey as she goes through the season
00:08:51 at the US Nationals as well.
00:08:53 So she might be a bit of a dark horse.
00:08:55 Always good and always there.
00:08:56 But she looks like she's really improved that much more
00:08:58 this season.
00:08:59 Justine McClellan.
00:09:00 Oh, the Canadians, both of them.
00:09:01 Justine, I mean, an early start.
00:09:04 She was a third skater, laid down a very solid, strong
00:09:07 program, and just kind of stayed at the top of the leaderboard.
00:09:10 I've noticed a great confidence in her skating this year.
00:09:13 Yeah, Justine was-- she's always been a great skater.
00:09:15 She was out on the Junior Grand Prix last season,
00:09:17 had some issues, some problems, some mistakes
00:09:20 in international competition.
00:09:21 But national competition, always very, very comfortable.
00:09:24 International, got a little bit.
00:09:25 But this year, she looks that much stronger,
00:09:28 that much more confident.
00:09:29 And Kaya.
00:09:30 Kaya Ryder.
00:09:31 Kaya, so she describes she's doing last year's programs,
00:09:35 but she says they've been renovated.
00:09:37 So I asked her about the renovations.
00:09:38 And they've made some--
00:09:39 Which room, right?
00:09:40 Yeah, which is they've made improvements to the speed
00:09:43 and some of the technical to step it up
00:09:44 to be senior programs.
00:09:45 But she loves the programs.
00:09:47 And she didn't feel she was ready to move on
00:09:49 to new programs, because she still wanted to skate these ones.
00:09:52 So Kaya had a great skate.
00:09:54 She's stronger.
00:09:55 She's grown.
00:09:57 Her speed has improved.
00:09:58 But I have the funniest thing about Kaya
00:10:00 when I was talking to her after.
00:10:01 I said, so Kaya, you're competing
00:10:04 in your first senior international
00:10:06 with world champion Kaori Sakamoto.
00:10:08 Like, how does that feel?
00:10:10 And she got giddy.
00:10:11 She was just like, oh my god, I am so excited.
00:10:14 I am such a fan of hers.
00:10:16 I can't believe I'm sharing the same ice.
00:10:18 In the dressing room, I was sitting beside her.
00:10:20 And I wanted to sneak my accreditation tag over
00:10:22 to see if I could get an autograph.
00:10:24 But I'm competing against her.
00:10:25 So didn't know she said--
00:10:27 but it was just so cute.
00:10:28 Yeah, that's a little awkward to do.
00:10:30 But Kaya, she's had such a great career so far.
00:10:33 Beautiful skater.
00:10:34 Got to soften the knees a little bit more,
00:10:36 because you saw she's just a little bit under Justine
00:10:39 Maclette, but both Canadians up there in the top five.
00:10:42 So that's great news.
00:10:44 And a great future for--
00:10:45 at least a great start to the season for these two.
00:10:47 But we still got the free program to go.
00:10:48 Yeah, we do.
00:10:50 Coming up today, we're going to start with--
00:10:54 well, actually, this morning, we have the Ice Dance Rhythm
00:10:56 Dance and the Men's Short Program.
00:10:59 So I'd like to just talk a little bit about the Ice Dance
00:11:01 Rhythm Dance, because it's an '80s thing.
00:11:03 And I'm a little bit lost by it, because when
00:11:06 I was a kid, I used to go to the ice rink.
00:11:08 And I remember, I was a kid, and I
00:11:10 was like, what is the '80s thing?
00:11:11 Well, a lot of the skaters weren't born in the '80s,
00:11:14 for one thing.
00:11:14 But it was the music.
00:11:16 It was a bit of a cultural revolution.
00:11:17 MTV started.
00:11:19 There was all sorts of different type of music.
00:11:21 But taking that music and interpreting that feeling
00:11:25 and that genre on the ice could be a challenge.
00:11:28 Now, the programs are going to be fun.
00:11:30 The costumes are going to be colorful.
00:11:32 But watch and see if you kind of get that '80s vibe from them.
00:11:35 And that's what we're going to do.
00:11:37 We're going to do a lot of different things
00:11:39 to make sure that we feel that's truly from the '80s.
00:11:41 Did you actually perform and make
00:11:44 us feel that you brought that out of the 1980s?
00:11:47 Was it authentic to the 1980s?
00:11:49 So that's really not very specific,
00:11:51 but it does give a general-- and the interesting thing
00:11:54 about that is the rhythm dance is
00:11:55 going to be very, very entertaining.
00:11:57 No one's going to do the '80s for the free dance.
00:11:59 So we're going to have a great contrast between the rhythm
00:12:01 dance and the free dance, of course.
00:12:03 And that's only good for ice dance,
00:12:05 but it's going to be a lot of fun.
00:12:06 However, what's however?
00:12:07 However, we have one more event to talk about,
00:12:09 and it's the men.
00:12:10 Yes.
00:12:10 Let's talk about the men.
00:12:12 OK.
00:12:12 So I find it interesting watching the men on practice
00:12:15 and watching the men in competition,
00:12:17 because often it's not the same programs.
00:12:19 They're usually really free and attack and the practices.
00:12:23 And then the competition, they tighten up a little bit.
00:12:25 The knees don't work quite as good.
00:12:27 And anything can happen.
00:12:29 Well, you were talking about watching the men in practice.
00:12:32 And I think that's a great example of that.
00:12:34 So the men are doing the same thing.
00:12:35 They're doing the same thing.
00:12:36 They're doing the same thing.
00:12:37 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:39 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:40 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:42 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:43 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:44 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:46 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:47 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:49 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:50 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:52 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:53 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:54 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:56 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:57 And they're doing the same thing.
00:12:59 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:00 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:02 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:03 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:05 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:06 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:08 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:09 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:10 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:12 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:13 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:15 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:16 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:18 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:19 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:20 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:22 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:23 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:25 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:26 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:28 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:29 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:31 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:32 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:34 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:35 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:36 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:38 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:39 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:41 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:42 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:44 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:45 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:47 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:48 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:50 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:51 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:53 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:54 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:56 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:57 And they're doing the same thing.
00:13:59 Well, we'll find out.
00:14:00 Stephen Gogolath.
00:14:00 Stephen Gogolath, again, we've seen all sorts of things
00:14:03 from Stephen in his programs, from disasters
00:14:07 to absolutely spectacular.
00:14:09 So I'm hoping Stephen brings it for both the short and the free.
00:14:13 And also Wesley Chu, who is a very artistic, interpretive
00:14:17 skater with the harder tricks now.
00:14:20 Well, I was happy to see with Stephen.
00:14:22 He has all the technical elements.
00:14:23 But he was always a little bit more shy.
00:14:25 But as I saw him in the rink the other day, he said, hi.
00:14:28 How are you doing?
00:14:28 I was like, whoa.
00:14:29 That was a surprise.
00:14:30 So maybe he's coming out of his shell and will perform more.
00:14:33 I think he's been working with Shailene Bourne,
00:14:34 I believe, as well.
00:14:35 Wesley Chu, two-time bronze medalist in Canada.
00:14:38 He has really improved.
00:14:39 He's got a quad sal and a quad toe.
00:14:41 So much more to come from him as well.
00:14:43 So hey, let's get started.
00:14:45 All right.
00:14:45 The Men's Short Program starts right now.
