00:00:02 - Talking with Kaya Ryder, programs for this season.
00:00:12 All right, let's start with your short program
00:00:14 because it's the same short program from last year.
00:00:17 So what have you done to it?
00:00:19 - We've done a whole bunch of renovations to the program.
00:00:21 As I like to say, I love home shows.
00:00:23 (laughing)
00:00:24 So I work, that's what I call it.
00:00:25 But yeah, it's been really fun to get to work on it
00:00:28 to try to expand, make it better for this season.
00:00:30 But I'm really happy to be keeping the music
00:00:32 'cause it's a piece I really connect with.
00:00:34 - So when you started with that program,
00:00:36 how did you come up with that?
00:00:38 Was it a collaboration?
00:00:39 Was it you?
00:00:40 Was it your choreographer?
00:00:41 - Yes, that was all Jeff.
00:00:42 Jeff knows me so well.
00:00:44 He always finds pieces that I'll connect to,
00:00:46 that I'll find that have a spark,
00:00:48 that I just enjoy doing.
00:00:49 And I really appreciate that
00:00:51 because it's so much more fun to train
00:00:52 when you have a program that inspires you.
00:00:55 So it's really fun to have that.
00:00:57 - You were at high performance camp.
00:00:59 And it's your first one.
00:01:00 - Yes, amazing.
00:01:01 - And there's a lot goes on at these.
00:01:03 It's not just about the skating.
00:01:04 - No.
00:01:05 - And you had, you practice and you skate your programs
00:01:08 in front of judges and officials.
00:01:09 - Yes.
00:01:10 - And then you get feedback.
00:01:11 - Yes.
00:01:12 - And how do you feel about getting feedback?
00:01:13 - It's such a wonderful opportunity.
00:01:15 I just feel so grateful to get to have this chance
00:01:20 to show my programs before the season
00:01:23 and have all these amazing judges come to watch
00:01:25 and then give me feedback so that I can put their input
00:01:29 back into the program.
00:01:30 So I feel like it's a really amazing opportunity
00:01:33 for Canadian skaters to get that shot.
00:01:36 - So do you, a few more renovations when you go back?
00:01:39 - Yes, a few more tweaks, a few little details
00:01:43 that I definitely wanna add after the wonderful feedback.
00:01:45 So that's exciting.
00:01:47 - So where are you looking most forward
00:01:49 to performing these programs this year?
00:01:52 - Definitely Skate Canada International.
00:01:54 I'm so excited for my first Grand Prix event.
00:01:57 So that's what I'm looking most forward to right now
00:01:59 is just to have that opportunity to do these programs
00:02:02 on a Grand Prix stage.
00:02:04 It's something I've always dreamed of.
00:02:05 So I'm super excited about that.
00:02:07 - That is gonna be an exciting moment.
00:02:08 - Thank you.
00:02:09 - But we have to also, I have to also ask you about Calgary
00:02:11 'cause you competed at the Junior World Championships
00:02:13 last year. - Of course, yes.
00:02:14 - In your hometown of Calgary,
00:02:15 I think half the crowd was family.
00:02:17 - Yes.
00:02:18 - And here to come to cheer you on.
00:02:19 - Thank you.
00:02:19 - Everybody knew you.
00:02:20 - Thank you.
00:02:21 - And you're, and we're back in Calgary this year
00:02:22 for the National Championships.
00:02:24 - Yes, I'm so excited for that.
00:02:26 Well, since I've moved,
00:02:27 Winsport has kind of been a second home to me.
00:02:31 So to get to compete where I've been training
00:02:34 for past six years pretty much is really special,
00:02:39 especially through COVID, through everything,
00:02:42 that was kind of my second home really.
00:02:45 So to have that opportunity at Junior Worlds
00:02:47 was just really special.
00:02:49 So I'm really excited to get to do it again
00:02:51 at Nationals this year.
00:02:53 - Now, growing up as a young skater,
00:02:55 did you have a skater who you watched or idolized
00:02:58 or was your moment that you wanted to be that one?
00:03:01 - It was Caitlin Osmond.
00:03:03 For me growing up, it was always Caitlin.
00:03:06 And I just found her charisma on the ice.
00:03:09 She just had such, it wasn't just about technical for her.
00:03:12 It was about the whole program.
00:03:13 So being a young girl watching her,
00:03:17 it wasn't just technical elements.
00:03:19 Like you could see her in the program
00:03:21 and that's what pulled me in.
00:03:22 Like it really pulled me into the sport.
00:03:24 So then when I moved to Edmonton from Ottawa when I was 10,
00:03:27 to get to have the opportunity to skate at Ice House
00:03:30 where she was training, honestly,
00:03:32 I was just always hands up on the window
00:03:34 to press up against the glass watching her.
00:03:36 It was like a dream come true really.
00:03:38 And then that season she went to the World Championships
00:03:41 and won a silver medal.
00:03:43 And what the club did for her,
00:03:45 it was so cool to be a part of.
00:03:47 Like we'd have poster competitions and parties for her,
00:03:51 send-offs, comebacks.
00:03:53 So to get to be a part of that
00:03:54 was something I'll never forget.
00:03:56 - I'm waiting for the Kaya Rider poster party.
00:03:59 - Oh, thank you.
00:04:00 - Competition coming up too, I'm sure.
00:04:02 - That's so nice.
00:04:03 - So Kaya, it's been a great experience for you.
00:04:06 I know you've learned a lot from this
00:04:07 and we're really looking forward
00:04:08 to seeing these Renovated Heritage and Seasons programs.
00:04:12 - Thank you, thank you.
00:04:14 I'm very excited.
00:04:15 Thank you so much.
00:04:16 - Hello everyone.
00:04:18 Welcome to Pierre Franco back to the 2023 ISU Challenger
00:04:22 Series, the Autumn Classic International.
00:04:24 I'm your host, Ted Bard.
00:04:25 My co-host, Joni McPhail here.
00:04:27 We just watched the Paris Short Program
00:04:29 and up next, Joni, the Women's Short.
00:04:31 - Yes, and another exciting field for this event.
00:04:33 We have Kaori Sakamoto, the current World Champion.
00:04:37 She is such an exciting, dynamic skater to watch.
00:04:41 - Yeah, yeah.
00:04:42 This is one of the fastest skaters in figure skating,
00:04:45 no question.
00:04:46 And if you know what a double axle is,
00:04:48 you watch that double axle
00:04:49 'cause there's nothing that covers,
00:04:51 no one covers the ice like she does on the double axle.
00:04:53 - I was watching practices and it amazes me the speed
00:04:57 she comes out of her jumps.
00:04:59 Like she comes out of them faster than she goes in
00:05:01 and it's just incredible to watch.
00:05:03 - Yeah, it's very special.
00:05:04 Won her two World Championships.
00:05:05 So we'll see what happens in year number three,
00:05:08 going for, you know, a hat trick.
00:05:10 - Right, and let's talk about the Canadians.
00:05:11 - Yes.
00:05:12 - We have Justine McClelland and Kaya Ryder.
00:05:15 Now, both former junior Canadian champions.
00:05:18 And this year, Kaya is competing
00:05:21 on the senior international circuit for the first time.
00:05:24 And Justine has also been competing
00:05:27 at some international competitions,
00:05:29 but an exciting event for both of them.
00:05:31 - I've watched both these skaters on the Junior Grand Prix
00:05:33 and Justine McClelland always comes in
00:05:34 extremely well prepared, great practices,
00:05:37 has had some challenges on the international
00:05:39 with just laying down what she could do,
00:05:42 but has made significant improvement,
00:05:43 has made a coaching change as well.
00:05:45 So we'll look and see how Justine is adjusting
00:05:47 to all of that.
00:05:48 Kaya Ryder, of course, she was very successful
00:05:50 on the Junior Grand Prix,
00:05:51 has been out for, was out for about a year or so
00:05:53 during COVID, is back, silver medalist in Canada,
00:05:57 and will challenge maybe for the title this year.
00:05:58 We'll find out.
00:05:59 We'll see her here this week.
00:06:01 - And also Moni Chiba, who I'm fascinated
00:06:04 that she has competed.
00:06:06 She came second in her national junior championships
00:06:09 and fifth in her national senior championships
00:06:12 in the same season.
00:06:13 That happens a lot, the Japanese skaters,
00:06:15 many of them do both the juniors and the seniors,
00:06:18 a busy season indeed.
00:06:19 And also, of course, they compete on the junior
00:06:21 or the senior Grand Prix.
00:06:22 So they're active in competing and learning how to compete.
00:06:25 That's one of the reasons why they're so strong.
00:06:27 - And I will say I was watching Mona on practice
00:06:29 and she has some amazing short program done by Misha G,
00:06:33 another one of my favorite skaters.
00:06:35 - Yeah, so you're gonna see some great skating here
00:06:38 as the women's take to the ice,
00:06:39 the women's short program coming up right now.
