00:00:00 practices but unfortunately singled a double axle in her short program which
00:00:04 is a very costly mistake as well one mistakes are not easily I can't word
00:00:12 things it's early it's not easily to come back from mistakes after the short
00:00:16 program and having one that actually creates an invalid element makes that
00:00:21 even harder Kaya Ryder had a few little mistakes
00:00:25 baubles here and there fall on the first jump and that sits her further back than
00:00:31 she'd rather be and then of course Sarah Modipui started off the event yesterday
00:00:35 and it's hard to start the event it can be and definitely some room to make up
00:00:41 some points in the free skating portion later today now the top three after the
00:00:45 short program in first reigning champion Kari Sakamoto of Japan in second Chion
00:00:50 Kim of Korea and sitting in third Reno Matsuike of Japan what are you
00:00:55 expecting might take place in the free skate later today well Kari has quite a
00:01:00 quite a lead a five-point lead off second place and she has that experience
00:01:04 to back her she went in yesterday with like this full fight ready to
00:01:08 demonstrate why she's a two-time world champion so most likely going to keep
00:01:14 that momentum going today and she has that little bit of buffer space between
00:01:18 first and second second is Reno my brains malfunctioning sorry it's early
00:01:28 Chion Kim was outstanding yesterday very solid very quick to rotate and
00:01:34 everything was just very solidly done which was very nice to see and she still
00:01:38 has that little buffer on third place so a little bit of comfort space in the
00:01:43 free program but that five-point gap between first and second that would be a
00:01:48 little bit more challenging for her to jump up to and then third place is Reno
00:01:53 thank you I'm there is Reno she was in the first group yesterday not a lot of
00:01:58 experience competing started off really set the stage for a lot of skaters just
00:02:03 had a little bit of issues with getting the full rotation in her combination
00:02:08 jump so she finds herself a little bit back with Audrey Audrey Shin really
00:02:12 right behind her so it's gonna be a quick battle podium placements and
00:02:17 especially you know the gap is less than a point I believe and we have a triple
00:02:22 jump that may be four or five points so you know anything can happen here you
00:02:26 know first two they're looking very strong third and fourth place also
00:02:29 looking strong so it should be an exciting free program but let's take you
00:02:33 down to ice level for the group one of the women's practice
00:02:38 the gates of hell but I won't back down no I'll stand my ground won't be turned around and I'll keep going until I get there.
00:02:46 I won't back down.
00:02:50 You could stand me up at the gates of hell.
00:02:54 But I won't back down.
00:02:58 No I'll stand my ground.
00:03:02 Won't be turned around.
00:03:06 And I'll keep this world from dragging me down.
00:03:11 But I'll stand my ground.
00:03:15 And I won't back down.
00:03:19 I won't back down.
00:03:23 There ain't no easy way out.
00:03:27 I won't back down.
00:03:31 Well here we are at ice level as we take a look at the skaters in group one of the women's free skate practice.
00:03:38 There's Madeline Skiezis of course two-time Canadian champion.
00:03:43 Sarah Maud Dupuis also of Canada.
00:03:47 The starting order is based on the placements yesterday reverse order.
00:03:54 And we'll see Maye Bernice Mette of France skating first.
00:04:02 Larinaki Goodman of Italy second.
00:04:05 Sarah Maud Dupuis followed by Kaya Reuter, Madeline Skiezis and in sixth Rinka Watanabe of Japan.
00:04:12 Well I had to check the scores from last year because I was convinced that Rinka is in the exact same spot as placement after the short program last year.
00:04:23 But she is in seventh whereas last year she was in sixth.
00:04:26 So one different placement.
00:04:28 But she fought back from there.
00:04:30 She fought back from sixth place last year and ended up winning the overall competition.
00:04:35 So don't count her out. She certainly has the ability to move up in the rankings right now just having a word with her coach.
00:04:44 She is planning the triple axel for the free skate.
00:04:49 So she has the goods.
00:04:52 Let's take a look now at her first skater, Maye Bernice Mette of France.
00:05:00 Maye started her program yesterday a little bit more nervous than I've seen her in practice.
00:05:05 She has an ability to perform so well really using her whole body and emotions.
00:05:11 And yesterday in the short program I think nerves kind of took over a bit.
00:05:15 There's nothing that really prepares you in training for that competition adrenaline.
00:05:20 Pressure you might put on yourself as well.
00:05:23 There is a nice double axel, double axel sequence to open the free skate run through.
00:05:29 You mentioned she was off the ice for quite a while recovering from an injury which affected her training time coming into this event.
00:05:38 All popped a planned triple lutz there.
00:05:43 A little bit wobbly but like I said it's early.
00:05:48 It is early but opting to try to get some of that feel she'd like to have for the competition later today.
00:05:55 Just enjoying with her not having much competition in the past couple of seasons under her belt.
00:06:05 Just getting used to performing again, being in front of an audience, feeling those nerves.
00:06:11 You can try to simulate that in practice.
00:06:14 There's just nothing that compares.
00:06:16 I think the next step for her, you can see she has the technical goods there.
00:06:21 A nice triple loop to bring it down to competition.
00:06:25 Very forward on the landing which in practice when you don't have those extra nerves,
00:06:30 they're a little bit easier to stay on your feet but then add the extra pressure,
00:06:35 be a little bit more lifted in the shoulders or jittery legs when you're that forward on the landing.
00:06:41 It gets a little bit more difficult.
00:06:44 It might affect the flow for some of the combinations she'll have to execute as well.
00:06:51 Choosing to sit out part of her free program.
00:07:02 It's going to be a long day.
00:07:06 Conserving energy. Free programs are hard. They're very long.
00:07:10 They are strenuous and your job as a skater is to make it look easy.
00:07:15 It is anything but.
00:07:17 There's so much cross training that's involved.
00:07:20 You have the cardio in you to execute your elements at the end of the performance.
00:07:26 Heading into another Lutz here.
00:07:34 Getting the job done, she rotated but I would question that landing.
00:07:39 I would as well.
00:07:41 She gets a huge amount of push on her takeoffs.
00:07:44 It's a little hard to work with the left side needed on the takeoff to get all the way around.
00:07:49 Just making sure it's an efficient air position.
00:07:52 You want to have your ankles, knees, everything glued as tight as possible in the air.
00:07:58 Fully over top of your axis.
00:08:02 You're strategically taking part to your solo and that's really what you have to do.
00:08:08 What you want to do is take your parts full out or cover it in between.
00:08:13 Save your energy for the full performance.
00:08:16 We just saw part of her choreographic sequence.
00:08:19 Probably my actual favorite part of a free program.
00:08:22 If done properly.
00:08:24 Choreographic sequence, there are no levels.
00:08:26 It is just based on your level of being able to perform in that moment.
00:08:32 It's my favorite part.
00:08:35 There's something to be said for an effective and free choreographic sequence.
00:08:39 There's no real requirements to the moves.
00:08:42 There has to be one or two of them that are clear to the technical panel.
00:08:46 You're free to create and accentuate the music.
00:09:02 Nice layback spin to end the free skate performance.
00:09:06 She looks a little bit more comfortable today on practice.
00:09:15 Often in the short program, that's the one you put a huge amount of pressure on yourself for.
00:09:21 Start to find a little more freedom in the free skate.
00:09:25 Sometimes when you're first to go in the free program, it is a sense of just saying,
00:09:29 I have nothing to lose.
00:09:32 That's a good mentality to have leading into the free skate.
00:09:35 Here's Lara Naki Goodman of Italy.
00:09:38 Lara is looking fairly good in practice the past couple of days.
00:09:58 In a rocky short program though, falling on the opening combination
00:10:02 and only doubling the planned triple flip.
00:10:05 Beautiful triple toe double axel there.
00:10:11 That was a triple toe, right? I'm not going crazy?
00:10:14 You're not going crazy.
00:10:16 Arm above the head. She does that on the majority of her jumps.
00:10:21 Sometimes it's for technical reasons. Sometimes it's for added GOE.
00:10:27 Sometimes you'll see both of the arms up as a technical strategy.
00:10:32 It's part of their technique.
00:10:34 They're to right the axis of the air and get a little more height.
00:10:37 Flying camel, one of the spins that are required, there'll be three in this women's free skate.
00:10:43 But the one arm up is interesting to me.
00:10:47 I haven't really seen it used as a part of the technique before.
00:10:52 Skating to vertigo, hitchcock and psycho.
00:10:57 That was very satisfying with the music.
00:11:03 Yeah, that was held for a long time, showing balance and control effectively done with the music.
00:11:09 There's something to say about the choreography that the choreographers put into the program.
00:11:18 But then the skaters interpretation of the choreography and being able to do beautiful triple loops like that.
00:11:26 With their own unique touch on the choreography given by the choreographer.
00:11:30 That was a really nice triple loop as well.
00:11:32 Looking very comfortable at such an early time in the morning.
00:11:36 Very much wanting to attack this free program.
00:11:41 When you have those mistakes in the short program,
00:11:44 uncharacteristic ones, her triple toe triple toe looked like she was about to land it.
00:11:48 And then it went a little sideways.
00:11:51 When that happens, you can start to question yourself.
00:11:56 Why did that go wrong? I thought it was well prepared.
00:11:59 But an experienced competitor will put that out of mind.
00:12:03 I need to adjust this and then take the next step forward.
00:12:06 Never look behind.
00:12:07 Focus on what you have to do next.
00:12:10 I had to study this for school this year.
00:12:13 So this is really fun to watch.
00:12:16 Do film studies classes.
00:12:20 You get to watch a lot of things.
00:12:22 But that piece of music is forever ingrained in my brain.
00:12:27 Interesting music selection to be sure.
00:12:30 Variety movements as well.
00:12:32 Hopefully she ups the intensity.
00:12:35 Comfort the free skate later today.
00:12:39 It's different to perform in front of maybe a dozen or so fans at 730 in the morning.
00:12:50 We have more showing up.
00:12:52 We have a few more tripling into the building.
00:12:55 Rather than a full house of competition.
00:13:04 I was really impressed by her spins yesterday.
00:13:08 Holding them very well.
00:13:13 Nice speed of centering in this change combination spin.
00:13:23 And a unique cross foot spin.
00:13:25 You don't see that too often in the women's event.
00:13:28 Oh, that's an acrobatic.
00:13:30 Very interesting ending pose.
00:13:34 You don't see that very often.
00:13:36 We're in for an entertaining program from Laranaki Goodman tonight.
00:13:41 Next up, Sarah Maud Dupuis of Canada.
00:13:56 Skating to piano concerto number three.
00:14:11 She had an okay start to the program yesterday.
00:14:23 Getting a triple Lutz completed.
00:14:25 Just like that, but without the combination.
00:14:27 So having to push that combination later on into the program.
00:14:31 But then her triple loop didn't go quite as well as she wanted to.
00:14:35 Getting a little bit of under rotation.
00:14:38 And then having to just do a double toe.
00:14:41 Where she had originally planned a triple S, triple toe at the beginning.
00:14:45 Perhaps an easier combination, more confident with that landing.
00:14:49 There I believe was planned a double axel, triple toe.
00:14:52 She was landing some nice one-spin practice.
00:14:55 She's getting the feel in early morning.
00:14:58 Make sure the placement is right for later today.
00:15:01 Choosing to opt out of a few elements.
00:15:12 But carrying her speed throughout this program.
00:15:20 A triple loop, double axel.
00:15:23 The triple loop a lot better than done in the short program yesterday.
00:15:27 And then having to hang on to that axel.
00:15:30 That double axel after a jump, that is quite tricky, isn't it?
00:15:33 It can be. I mean, you do have to push in between so there's that advantage.
00:15:37 But you do want to make sure it carries some distance across the ice.
00:15:41 So you don't lose your flow in the landing of the second jump.
00:15:44 And you're hoping not to break the momentum between the two jumps.
00:15:47 So not having to fully reset between the first, the push and the axel.
00:15:52 There's a definite rhythm to that sequence.
00:15:56 Skaters can choose to take either their step sequence or their choreo sequence first.
00:16:03 Used to be the choreo sequence had to be after the step sequence.
00:16:08 Not so anymore. More freedom to interpret as they see it.
00:16:12 I didn't know that.
00:16:15 I learned more with Kevin beside me.
00:16:18 Triple toe. Very nicely done by Sarah Mode.
00:16:23 I'm showing my age with that clip.
00:16:26 That's okay.
00:16:28 I don't think you're that much older than me.
00:16:31 We don't need to get into it.
00:16:33 Oh, we don't need to.
00:16:40 Late in the program, a triple sal.
00:16:43 A lot of skaters will choose to do their harder elements early on in the program.
00:16:47 And then opt for slightly easier jumps for them later on as they're more fatigued.
00:16:53 Other skaters will take the opposite approach.
00:16:56 Wanting to take advantage of the second half bonus.
00:16:59 Putting in those harder elements later on.
00:17:03 I've seen Sarah Mode really perform programs in the past.
00:17:08 And I would love to see her continue that today.
00:17:11 Bring a little bit of energy into the step sequence.
00:17:14 I felt her energy dropped a little bit in the short program yesterday.
00:17:18 But that can come with not feeling quite right on those elements.
00:17:22 Now there's something to be said about Sarah Mode.
00:17:27 Not feeling quite right on those elements.
00:17:30 Now there's something to be said for confident clean performance.
00:17:35 And then you just let it fly in the step sequence.
00:17:38 It's tough to get the same level of energy.
00:17:43 Also when you have to fight for elements or if there's a fall.
00:17:47 Or if something you need to work a little bit harder on.
00:17:50 It does take a lot more of your energy.
00:17:52 Whereas when everything is going well.
00:17:54 The adrenaline keeps pushing.
00:17:57 And you have the energy from the things that you landed.
00:18:01 And make that performance slightly easier.
00:18:04 I wish her all the best later today.
00:18:14 Sarah Mode Dupuis of Canada.
00:18:20 And up next, also from Canada, Kaya Ryder.
00:18:24 Well, Kaya yesterday was the first time she ever finished her program.
00:18:31 And didn't have a beaming smile on.
00:18:34 Of course there were a few costly mistakes.
00:18:37 With the triple Lutz fall at the beginning of the program.
00:18:40 And then having to opt for a triple flip double toe in the second half.
00:18:44 Which I've seen her do triple triples before there.
00:18:49 But wasn't quite in the right position.
00:18:51 So decided to play it safe with the double.
00:18:54 This is Kaya's first Grand Prix event.
00:18:58 And perhaps feeling some nerves where she might not have felt before.
00:19:03 Look at that triple Lutz, triple toe.
00:19:07 Not quite getting around on that triple toe.
00:19:11 But showing she's not going to let that triple Lutz go today.
00:19:17 Taking that with attack and confidence going in.
00:19:21 Easy triple loop.
00:19:24 I've seen her do some very good Lutz toes with full rotation in practice.
00:19:31 So she can take that to the competition.
00:19:34 Which is a big part of trusting your training.
00:19:37 Trusting that you're able to get up into the air there.
00:19:40 That was a beautiful triple flip Euler double sal.
00:19:43 Which I believe is the planned triple sal in her program.
00:19:48 She has the ability to do a triple on the back half of that combination.
00:19:52 Perhaps needs a little more speed and push across the ice.
00:19:55 To the Euler section in the middle.
00:19:57 Walking through her spins here.
00:20:10 I'm really impressed with the attention to details that Kaya has had over the last few months.
00:20:21 Or the year since I've last seen her skate.
00:20:24 And just carrying the speed across the ice a little bit more.
00:20:29 Really focusing on stretching through her fingers on all the choreography.
00:20:36 Another beautiful triple Lutz double toe there.
00:20:39 Actually that one looked a little bit more confident than the first she did.
00:20:44 Perhaps not having to worry about the triple toe can let it flow a little easier.
00:20:49 Taking most of her jumps in this performance early morning.
00:20:54 Triple flip, maybe a little more push off of the toe pick.
00:20:57 No major issue on that jump.
00:21:03 Have you ever had a few mistakes in the short program?
00:21:06 Did you feel more compelled in the pre-program practice to just get a few more repetitions done?
00:21:12 I largely took my practice the same.
00:21:15 But what I did feel was that pressure is off, there's nothing really to lose.
00:21:18 And often I would come fighting back in the free skate from that performance.
00:21:22 Of course you want to be able to do well in both.
00:21:25 But I often use that as an opportunity to show, well this is what I can really do.
00:21:29 Yesterday wasn't characteristic.
00:21:31 [Music]
00:21:39 Really using her edges through the step sequence.
00:21:42 Choreographed by David Wilson, skating to Inspiration by Florian.
00:21:51 The modern string quartet.
00:21:55 Quintet, not quartet, sorry.
00:21:57 Can't read either.
00:21:58 Can't talk, can't read.
00:21:59 What am I doing here?
00:22:00 We're just warming up.
00:22:02 Much like the skaters.
00:22:04 [Music]
00:22:14 I notice even throughout her free skate run through, she's looking much more at ease than she was in yesterday's short program practice.
00:22:22 It's a good sign of things to come.
00:22:26 That's the idea of being the hunter or the hunted and following a short program that you're obviously not proud of.
00:22:36 You want to come out of this competition feeling like you deserve to be here, which she does.
00:22:43 So that is going to light a fire under her today.
00:22:47 Absolutely.
00:22:48 That was Kaya Reiter of Canada.
00:22:51 Up next, Madeline Skiezis.
00:22:56 Two-time Canadian champion.
00:22:58 Currently sitting in eighth position after the short program.
00:23:02 There is a lot of room to move following the short program.
00:23:10 She's sitting with 57.44 and just up from her rink in Watanabe, 57.52.
00:23:17 That's very, very, very minimal.
00:23:21 That is the equivalent of like a toe point.
00:23:24 Maybe a little more than a toe point.
00:23:26 Not far behind the top group as well.
00:23:28 And she certainly has the ability to move up in the rankings.
00:23:32 She's tight on some of her jumping elements in the short program.
00:23:36 Looking fairly good in practice.
00:23:39 Seems to find the confidence she needs for her free skate performance today.
00:23:43 She did have a fight and determination on the triple lutz triple toe yesterday in the short program.
00:23:52 Getting the job done, but having to hang on.
00:23:55 So everything would just be a little bit there, but off.
00:23:59 So look at her triple flip.
00:24:04 Beautiful landing. Lots of speed and flow.
00:24:07 I think the quality of the toe pick on that takeoff has improved.
00:24:11 Much more elevation than I've seen in the past.
00:24:14 Using triple style beautifully there.
00:24:20 Skating this summertime.
00:24:22 Performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.
00:24:26 Choreographed by Caroline and Yuris.
00:24:30 I was going to try to say his last name, but I can't do it.
00:24:33 So I just opt out of that.
00:24:35 Again, working with an ice dance coach and team.
00:24:43 To bring out this storytelling elegance that...
00:24:49 Is really improved on Maddie this year and is really standing out.
00:24:53 I agree. You can see the difference even after a triple style.
00:24:57 Just the smoothness and attention to detail in her choreography.
00:25:01 How tough is that keep?
00:25:11 Well trained, confident going into the competition.
00:25:14 Things don't quite work out as you expect in the short program.
00:25:18 What's your mentality going into the pre-skate?
00:25:21 Just that desire to prove to yourself and prove to everyone watching.
00:25:29 The work and the hours that you put into your training.
00:25:33 And wanting to come out of that yourself.
00:25:36 Happy about what you did.
00:25:38 And that's one nice thing about the short program being early on.
00:25:42 If it doesn't work the way you want it to.
00:25:45 You can light that fire underneath you.
00:25:48 Perform just that little bit more in the free program.
00:25:52 And you can still come out of it very proud of what you accomplished.
00:25:57 And it's still really early in the season.
00:26:00 Knowing that there's more Grand Prix events.
00:26:02 There's national championships and world championships.
00:26:05 That you want to qualify for.
00:26:07 And just recognizing that it's a long season.
00:26:10 It's a good thought process to have.
00:26:13 There's also the mentality.
00:26:17 You don't have a lot to lose.
00:26:19 You have everything to gain in this free skate.
00:26:21 Rather than defend.
00:26:23 Feel like you can't make a mistake.
00:26:25 You can let it all align for the free skate.
00:26:28 That last jumping pass.
00:26:31 I don't think she was very thrilled by it.
00:26:34 Doing a double toe after the jump.
00:26:37 Just taking your time.
00:26:40 And that's the goal of this free program.
00:26:43 If there is a mistake.
00:26:45 There's still so much room to gain points.
00:26:47 As what you mentioned.
00:26:49 Liking the free skate a little bit more.
00:26:51 There's room to make up an error.
00:26:54 Not allowing an error to change your course of the program.
00:27:00 And it obviously didn't for her.
00:27:02 That was a beautiful double axel.
00:27:04 Making up for the single in the short program.
00:27:08 A long characteristic mistake.
00:27:11 I think she'll be just fine on those axels in the free skate.
00:27:15 I wish her all the best, Madeline Skiezis.
00:27:18 Of Canada.
00:27:20 Last to skate in this first group.
00:27:23 Of the women's practice.
00:27:25 Rinka Watanabe.
00:27:27 Of Japan.
00:27:29 [Music]
00:27:45 Interesting piece of music.
00:27:47 Skating to Brodstor, Goliath, Meeting Laura, and November.
00:27:52 [Music]
00:27:57 Very dramatic piece of music.
00:27:59 Setting the tone for what will be the triple axel later today.
00:28:05 [Music]
00:28:09 Rinka, as I mentioned earlier, went from 6th place in the short program last year.
00:28:13 To taking away the gold medal at Skate Canada.
00:28:17 Might be a little tougher today.
00:28:22 But if she does stuff like that, it could help.
00:28:26 That was beautiful and much more characteristic of what she's been showing in practice.
00:28:31 She was so worried about her lutz in practice.
00:28:35 That loop was almost an afterthought and then just an uncharacteristic mistake.
00:28:39 In the short program of that element.
00:28:41 Keeps her down at 7th.
00:28:43 Beautiful triple flip.
00:28:49 As you mentioned, that uncharacteristic mistake on the triple loop.
00:28:52 You know that it's uncharacteristic when you are willing to risk your combination on the later last jump of your short program.
00:29:00 Which she did.
00:29:02 And unfortunately it didn't work out in her favor.
00:29:04 She took the fall on the triple loop.
00:29:06 Not able to get a combination completed.
00:29:08 And that is why she finds herself in 7th place right now.
00:29:12 The loop is a very comfortable jump for her.
00:29:15 And it's not often seen a loop-toe combination.
00:29:22 Skaters will tend to choose either an easier combination or one.
00:29:27 Flip her lutz allows for more speed on the landing for her.
00:29:30 She likes the rhythm of the loop jump.
00:29:33 The ease of where she travels across, I guess.
00:29:38 Really carrying her speed throughout this choreography.
00:29:45 Bringing a softer side of her skating compared to the beginning of the program.
00:29:59 Really showing her dynamic artistic ability.
00:30:05 That was an easy triple lutz. No problem on that element.
00:30:10 Seems like she's found her timing.
00:30:12 She needs for her triple jumps.
00:30:15 A later on triple loop planned.
00:30:30 In this program.
00:30:35 Opting not to do it this morning. The first one was good enough.
00:30:38 Getting that balance between attack.
00:30:45 Getting the full feel of some of these jumping patterns.
00:30:49 And the jumps themselves.
00:30:51 Serving some energy for the fall performance later today.
00:30:58 I mentioned yesterday in a program that she has really improved on her choreography and performance throughout her programs.
00:31:12 But then I also mentioned a little bit going through the motions.
00:31:15 And you can kind of see that in this step sequence.
00:31:17 She's doing all these amazing upper body movements.
00:31:20 Connecting it with the difficult turns.
00:31:23 There's not a lot of facial expression going on.
00:31:27 It's a little later in the morning. Still 8am.
00:31:30 Saving it for later.
00:31:32 I know I'm being picky.
00:31:35 I like being picky. It's fine.
00:31:40 That was Rinka Watanabe of Japan.
00:31:48 Only 3 or 4 minutes left in this opening practice.
00:31:53 [Music]
00:32:10 The skater is really winding down.
00:32:13 There's an opportunity to rest.
00:32:16 Perhaps take a nap before their free skate.
00:32:19 There's not a lot of time for the last skater of the free program in a warm up group to have much time after their skate.
00:32:28 After their music rotation.
00:32:30 As in the short program.
00:32:32 In the short program there's about 10 minutes left following the music.
00:32:36 In the free program there's 2.
00:32:39 Yeah, I mean you get your work done before the program takes place.
00:32:44 And just try to feel things out.
00:32:47 And hoping nothing drastic happens while your music happens.
00:32:50 Or is playing that really you want to have to redo afterwards as you don't have that much time.
00:32:57 Yeah, that music run through a few are in that last position.
00:33:02 That's really it.
00:33:03 They just recover in the last couple of minutes.
00:33:06 Maybe take one more jump.
00:33:08 Looks like she's maybe going to take an axle.
00:33:11 No, she's going to take her loop one more time.
00:33:16 Very nice loop toe.
00:33:18 Triple loop, triple toe.
00:33:20 Very, very beautiful.
00:33:23 And easy, simple.
00:33:25 You can see how easy it is and she just needs to believe in herself.
00:33:29 Make sure she keeps focused on the free skate.
00:33:32 That's it for group one of the women's practice.
00:33:43 And shortly we'll have group two take to the ice.
00:33:48 [announcer speaking French]
00:34:17 Fairly tight in this second group of skaters in terms of points.
00:34:22 Room to crack onto the podium for our skates.
00:34:28 We have on the ice Star Andrews of the United States.
00:34:37 Lindsey Thorngren, also of the United States.
00:34:40 Audrey Shin of the United States.
00:34:42 Followed by Rina Matsuike, Chaeyeon Kim, and Kari Sakamoto.
00:34:48 As you said, the point difference isn't that much between...
00:34:55 In this warm up group anyways.
00:34:58 From Star Andrews all the way until, well, third place.
00:35:02 Yeah, that's the difference between a triple jump.
00:35:06 Maybe not getting the timing you're looking for.
00:35:09 As you saw in the short program.
00:35:11 Well, anything can happen.
00:35:13 So expect some movement in the free skate.
00:35:16 Some good performances as well.
00:35:21 Just making sure each skater is focusing on what their plan is.
00:35:26 What their goals are for this competition.
00:35:28 Because you cannot control what other people are doing.
00:35:31 Whether they skate absolutely outstanding or make other mistakes.
00:35:35 That is beyond your control.
00:35:40 That can be tough to do.
00:35:42 You have that podium position within grasp.
00:35:45 Often you get fixated on that.
00:35:47 "Oh, what do I need to do to be on the podium?"
00:35:49 Well, no.
00:35:50 That's what you need to do in order to have your clean performance.
00:35:53 First, it's one step at a time.
00:35:56 See two time.
00:35:57 Current world champion, Kari Sakamoto just easing into the ice.
00:36:02 Making sure she's well warmed up before she gets into her jumping passes.
00:36:09 She has the longest wait on this practice group.
00:36:13 Well, you can afford it as well.
00:36:15 No reason to rush.
00:36:18 Look at Lindsey Thorngren.
00:36:22 Really great skate yesterday.
00:36:24 She has improved quite a bit on getting her speed, getting her flow across the ice.
00:36:29 Her jumps are still landing a little bit slower and with less flow.
00:36:35 But the process is starting.
00:36:38 You can see she's more confident than perhaps she was this time last season.
00:36:43 And to me, her jumps were looking fairly good in practice.
00:36:48 This may be a little tight on some of the landings when she misses her push.
00:36:54 Some wonderful qualities to her skating and performance as well.
00:37:00 Unique choreography in her short program yesterday.
00:37:04 And an amazing talent of getting the triple triple done no matter what.
00:37:09 Even if you land on a dime, getting the points of the triple triple,
00:37:14 of course, it wasn't fully rotated landing on the quarter.
00:37:18 But she's dry.
00:37:22 That's what you have to do to compete with the top and keep yourself in contention
00:37:27 for placements on the podium.
00:37:30 Let's look at Rino Matsuike of Japan, currently sitting in third.
00:37:34 She skated early in the event yesterday in the first warm up group
00:37:40 and just really set the stage.
00:37:42 She skated outstandingly on the first two elements.
00:37:45 A little bit tight on the triple triple combination later on in the program.
00:37:49 But was so thrilled when she finished her program.
00:37:54 As she should.
00:37:57 Let's take a look at Star Andrews of the United States.
00:38:00 Of course, we mentioned last year's silver medalist at Skate Canada International.
00:38:06 A little tight on the landing of her triple loop, but otherwise a solid short program.
00:38:10 She finds herself currently in sixth position, but not too far behind.
00:38:22 Easy triple salchow double axel sequence as she warms up her jumps.
00:38:27 Let's look at Audrey Shin of the United States.
00:38:34 Nice and clean, tidy short program.
00:38:37 Only doing a triple toe triple toe.
00:38:39 She's done triple lutz triple toe in the past, but perhaps a good strategy.
00:38:44 She finds herself in fourth position.
00:38:47 Just over a point out of third place.
00:38:50 And of course, she with the triple toe triple toe, she was able to focus on the
00:38:57 on the spins and maximizing every level she could and every point she can without leaving anything on the table.
00:39:05 She's only one of two skaters in the women's event yesterday that got level four on absolutely everything.
00:39:11 So very well-rounded performance and earning some quality marks for technical in that skate.
00:39:19 The women will start shortly.
00:39:26 The second group of women.
00:39:28 The music plays.
00:39:30 An opportunity to take parts or a full out or nothing at all.
00:39:34 It's up to them.
00:39:36 They're free skating.
00:39:38 Often, what did you do, Caitlin?
00:39:44 You're in the second group.
00:39:46 You've done well in the short program.
00:39:49 What's your strategy for this practice session when the music comes on?
00:39:53 I'll focus on myself and perform.
00:39:57 For me, I really needed to find my level of confidence and stand tall and put myself into a character that wasn't my own brain.
00:40:07 So for me, that was just finding that character, finding parts of my program that I knew I needed to feel comfortable.
00:40:15 Here's a look at Star Andrews to start off this warm-up group.
00:40:20 A little bit different of a style of program compared to the short program where she skated to Alien Superstar.
00:40:27 And instead, today, skating to Being Good isn't good enough.
00:40:32 Quite the contrast and perhaps a good setting for the technical difficulty that she'll have to work her way through in this free skating portion.
00:40:44 A little double axel to start the program.
00:40:47 Simple. Out of nowhere.
00:40:49 Would you typically like to start with a harder or easier free skate?
00:40:54 I wanted to start with my jump that made me feel the most powerful, which for me was my triple flip, triple toe.
00:41:00 And that was the start of every program.
00:41:02 That was a good one, too.
00:41:04 I can see that.
00:41:06 It was a comfortable jump for me.
00:41:08 It was relatively one of my easiest jumps, actually.
00:41:11 And it just kind of made me feel invincible for the rest.
00:41:17 That's a good feel to have.
00:41:19 Other skaters just like to take an easy jump to get the nerves and jitters out, feel comfortable before they take the more difficult jumping passes.
00:41:29 Easy triple toe.
00:41:34 Not the most difficult element, but executed well.
00:41:38 Executed well.
00:41:41 Choosing just to do small sections of her free program.
00:42:05 Nice smile right with the music.
00:42:08 Straight into her death drop.
00:42:12 That spin sounds a lot scarier than it is.
00:42:15 Yeah, well, you know, you get the feature to change feet in the air with the butterfly position.
00:42:23 It tends to be more effective when you get a little more air in the fly.
00:42:29 And part of it, flying change combination spin.
00:42:33 There's sections of that spin all done.
00:42:36 That triple salchow, double axel that she was warming up earlier.
00:42:47 Problem with that sequence.
00:42:50 Her jumps have appeared a lot more lighter and efficient in the air, getting lots of height, getting really quick into the rotation.
00:42:59 Having a lot of room to just relax on the way down.
00:43:04 There's some of the more comfortable jumps that she has.
00:43:09 Looking through them in the free skate.
00:43:11 She will include two triple flips.
00:43:14 That one sometimes struggles with the second one.
00:43:18 See if she can achieve the consistency on those two elements.
00:43:23 Very nice triple loop.
00:43:25 Looking a lot more comfortable on those triple loops compared to yesterday in the short program.
00:43:30 The deep edges in the step sequence.
00:43:37 She's pacing the balance through the right foot cluster.
00:43:41 Difficult turns in a row, all done on one foot.
00:43:46 [Music]
00:43:52 Making sure to hit all those requirements for the step sequence.
00:43:57 Difficult turns, upper body, rotation.
00:44:01 Am I missing one?
00:44:04 Clusters.
00:44:05 You got most of it. There's a lot going on.
00:44:09 Beautiful spin.
00:44:12 Showcasing her flexibility.
00:44:16 And ending with a layback spin.
00:44:22 Star Andrews of the United States.
00:44:30 When you're not focusing on those more difficult jumping passes, of course she has the triple flips.
00:44:39 But she has to make sure that everything she does is as clean as possible.
00:44:46 Quality is important to be sure.
00:44:48 Here's Lindsey Thorngren, also of the United States.
00:44:52 Skating to the Twilight Medley.
00:45:06 Much better triple lutz, triple toe from the short program.
00:45:12 Carrying the flow throughout the entire jump.
00:45:16 Looking more relaxed going into that element as well. No hesitation.
00:45:28 Easy triple salchow, would like a little more speed and perhaps distance across the ice, but done nonetheless.
00:45:37 Triple flip looking nice and easy as well, no question about the rotation on that jump.
00:45:49 As you said, same thing as the triple salchow, just wanting to get that speed and flow going in and out of the jump.
00:45:57 She demonstrates that really well on the triple lutz this year.
00:46:01 And now just incorporating that with the rest of the elements.
00:46:05 It's a step-by-step process. You see the complexity of the transitions she has going in.
00:46:13 So she's built that aspect in her performance.
00:46:19 Just getting comfortable with more speed and flow.
00:46:22 She keeps developing this performance throughout the season.
00:46:36 She's been working with Sandra Bezic and Shae Limbourne on her choreography this season.
00:46:43 Two people to really bring out personalities.
00:46:49 A little out of focus single axle triple toe.
00:46:58 This has become a double axle triple toe in the free skate.
00:47:02 Staying very focused going into each of these jumping passes.
00:47:08 Triple lutz, double loop.
00:47:19 As I said earlier, her speed going into that jump has really improved.
00:47:28 And triple loop. I think she's just doing all of her jumping passes this morning.
00:47:33 So she's confident. So maybe just a little extra reassurance.
00:47:38 Other than perhaps the second triple lutz, Caitlin, I thought the rotation on her jumps in this run-through looking much more secure.
00:47:57 Step sequence, really trying to get these difficult turns.
00:48:02 Remaining very upright with her upper body.
00:48:08 Just incorporating a few upper body moves.
00:48:16 Maybe a little too much in the middle section of that sequence.
00:48:20 A little laugh.
00:48:23 A little bit upper body. It's nice to have it throughout, but the requirement is just one third of the length of the step sequence.
00:48:35 So sometimes you'll see it play strategically through sections.
00:48:39 Really showcasing her flexibility throughout parts of her choreography and really in her spins.
00:48:46 Really nice edge change with the camel forward. And look at the speed on the I position.
00:48:53 Well, she'll be happy with that. Lindsay Thorngren, the strong pre-skating run-through.
00:48:59 Up next, last of three Americans in this final group, Audrey Shin of the United States.
00:49:11 [Music]
00:49:14 Skating to Skyfall, Cupid Chase, and Komodo Dragon.
00:49:37 Lots of height on that triple Lutz.
00:49:41 Landing a little high on the toe pick, not having a lot of speed coming out, but moving on pretty quick from it.
00:49:48 Su-Sheng, who's the combination there in her pre-skating. Nice easy plane triple toe.
00:50:02 What I love about Audrey skating is her willingness just to fully attack the jumps.
00:50:09 They're so quick, that was a bad example of it, of popping her flip into a single.
00:50:17 But they're so quick to get into the rotation, really using her arms, pulling them into herself.
00:50:30 Right back into the program with that double Axel.
00:50:33 Just like she was a little head with her upper body on the takeoff of that triple flip,
00:50:39 and she'll probably work that after her music is completed.
00:50:43 Back into those jumping passes here with a triple loop.
00:50:59 Double toe, double loop.
00:51:02 Great combination to start the second half of her program.
00:51:09 Triple Sal, I don't think she likes that part of the ice today.
00:51:21 Well, she's kind of punching down on the takeoff of that Sal where you want to wait a little bit longer
00:51:26 to get the lift of the free leg on the way through.
00:51:29 Back into a triple loop, those lips are looking really comfortable today.
00:51:38 Getting lots of height and ease into the landing.
00:51:41 What was your favorite jump, Kevin?
00:51:47 Well, I really liked the feel of a good Sal count.
00:51:50 The takeoff and the comfortable quadruple jump.
00:51:54 I wasn't a particular fan of the lutz.
00:51:59 I never got the good feel of a nice split on the takeoff.
00:52:04 But those characters are good quality ones.
00:52:07 I'm jealous. Could I have a Sal, please?
00:52:16 There are some skaters who prefer edge jumps over toe pick jumps.
00:52:20 I love the feeling of the launch up into the air using the toe pick.
00:52:24 And I was not really good at trusting my edges.
00:52:27 I want to showcase your strengths.
00:52:31 We all have our own unique strengths and abilities.
00:52:42 You see those three difficult turns in a row quite often.
00:52:46 In the first to be four, one has to be done on each foot.
00:52:50 All the turns have to be clean to up the level of the step sequence.
00:52:55 Bring her performance into the step sequence.
00:53:08 Connection with the judges.
00:53:11 [Music]
00:53:13 Into interesting ending position.
00:53:26 There's a lot of interesting ending positions today.
00:53:28 We like interesting.
00:53:30 Look forward to her free skating tonight.
00:53:35 Here's Rino Matsuike of Japan.
00:53:39 [Music]
00:53:41 Skating to Nella Fantasia.
00:54:05 Starting with a beautiful triple loop straight into her choreography,
00:54:09 which is what I really enjoyed in her short program yesterday.
00:54:12 It's her ability to move from one thing to another
00:54:16 without breaking the storyline of the program.
00:54:20 She's mentioned before her free program is on a theme of peace.
00:54:26 Showcasing that to the world.
00:54:29 Here's her triple lutz, triple toe.
00:54:32 A little questionable on the edge, but much better on the rotation of both of those jumps.
00:54:37 Beautiful flow across the ice.
00:54:46 The double axel as continuation.
00:54:49 Moving into her spins.
00:54:56 That position seems to be her strong suit.
00:55:00 In her short program, she started off her flying camel quite wobbly,
00:55:04 actually traveling across the ice,
00:55:06 and saved it, bringing it back into a very centered spin
00:55:10 with that difficult variation.
00:55:12 That was a really unique change of foot and ordering of positions
00:55:17 in that flying change combination spin.
00:55:20 Another beautiful double axel.
00:55:24 Just carries so much distance across the ice and...
00:55:29 Speed. The speed going out is the same as what's going in,
00:55:33 and that's what you're looking for in jumps.
00:55:35 You don't want it to slow down and have to work to gain speed again afterwards.
00:55:40 You can see the amount of flow she has across the ice for each push that she takes.
00:55:46 Makes it look so easy.
00:55:49 [music]
00:56:04 Really elegant with the soft movements of her arms.
00:56:10 [music]
00:56:22 A little off on the timing of that takeoff, meant to be a second triple lutz.
00:56:28 It's like her left side got ahead of her before the pick went down.
00:56:32 Much better on the triple flip combination.
00:56:39 Was that supposed to be a triple at the end there?
00:56:41 I'm not sure, but...
00:56:43 It was a very delayed double toe.
00:56:45 Lots of height in the second portion of that combination.
00:56:48 Nice and easy through the last combination.
00:56:52 Triple sow, double toe.
00:56:54 Doing a full free skate run-through.
00:56:59 It's like another day in practice.
00:57:03 [music]
00:57:10 Quite a beautiful program.
00:57:13 I'd love to see a little bit more performance during the competition.
00:57:18 But I love... I'm going to say I love a lot of things today.
00:57:21 But I love the camel change of edge position that she does with the arm movement.
00:57:27 It's so easy to just focus on the required positions of a spin to get the level.
00:57:34 But being able to incorporate a bit of your choreography into the positions...
00:57:38 Just adds a little extra flair.
00:57:42 Showcasing many beautiful qualities to her skating.
00:57:49 Rino Matsuike of Japan.
00:57:52 Currently sitting in third place.
00:57:55 Followed by Kaori Sakamoto.
00:57:57 After a very strong short program.
00:58:00 Chaeyeon Kim of Korea.
00:58:02 Currently sitting in second position.
00:58:05 A little skip of the music.
00:58:16 As she refocuses.
00:58:18 She'll likely take quite a few of her jumps.
00:58:23 As she did in Thursday's practice of the free skate.
00:58:26 Skating to Le Bal Defold.
00:58:29 Carrying a lot of speed across the ice.
00:58:42 Into this opening double axel.
00:58:45 Staying on one foot.
00:58:48 Straight into the choreography.
00:58:52 Choosing to use that jump to set the rhythm of her program.
00:59:01 Here's her most difficult combination.
00:59:05 A little off. Haven't seen that.
00:59:08 She's been so off. I don't think I've seen her make a mistake yet this week.
00:59:12 Let's see if she can refocus into her next jumping passes.
00:59:19 Into a planned triple loop.
00:59:21 Not firing the way she wants today.
00:59:24 She's normally so quick and efficient.
00:59:27 Getting her feet together right away.
00:59:29 But sometimes when you're not used to making mistakes.
00:59:32 Or if you've had a really strong week.
00:59:34 It's hard to bring your focus back.
00:59:36 It's back though.
00:59:39 Much more like what we've been seeing from Chaeyeon.
00:59:42 Confidence on the triple flip.
00:59:46 On a personal level I find it difficult to do a full free skating run through.
00:59:50 If you do it clean you kind of wonder.
00:59:53 Did you just leave that performance you wanted unpracticed rather than competition.
00:59:58 One of those but sometimes you want that confidence.
01:00:07 And you want to be able to do it.
01:00:11 One of those but sometimes you want that confidence.
01:00:14 I've never been one to do it.
01:00:17 But a lot of the people I competed against would do full run throughs on practice.
01:00:22 And I got quite used to seeing it.
01:00:25 There you go. A triple flip, double toe, double loop.
01:00:29 I question the edge on this one.
01:00:31 To make sure she stays to the inside towards the end of the takeoff.
01:00:36 Look at that triple lutz, double axel.
01:00:38 Much better than the first.
01:00:41 And that extremely difficult exit of the axel.
01:00:45 Staying on one foot straight into an illusion.
01:00:48 Holding the foot.
01:00:50 Really trusting having the speed and flow out of the axel.
01:00:56 And then the flip.
01:01:01 Really trusting having the speed and flow out of the axel.
01:01:05 Where she's coming into this competition as the Nebula Memorial champion.
01:01:16 Wanting to keep that momentum throughout the season.
01:01:21 And after a really strong short program.
01:01:24 She's five points behind the leader currently.
01:01:31 Very strong technical skater.
01:01:35 Showcasing her performance qualities as well.
01:01:37 Excellent use of upper body movement in the step sequence.
01:01:41 Into her last triple sal.
01:01:48 Easy peasy.
01:01:51 After being a little off in the first couple of triple jump attempts,
01:01:55 uncharacteristic, this is much more normal.
01:01:59 Much more what we've been seeing from Chayan in practice.
01:02:02 Confidence, ease, and consistency in her triple jumps.
01:02:06 I've said it many times, sometimes the mistakes are a good thing.
01:02:11 It is a chance for you to wake up a little bit.
01:02:15 And remember that ice is slippery.
01:02:19 And that you still need to focus through each element.
01:02:21 And you can't take anything for granted.
01:02:26 Our final skater in the second group of the women's practice.
01:02:29 Currently sitting in first place.
01:02:31 Two-time world champion, Kaori Sakamoto of Japan.
01:02:35 [Music]
01:02:55 What I find really impressive about Kaori skating
01:02:59 is that she can gain so much speed off of nothing.
01:03:03 And, well, that double axel is probably one of my favorites in the world.
01:03:05 Just carrying so much speed, power, and distance across the ice.
01:03:10 But it's rare you'll actually see Kaori do more than two crossovers in a row.
01:03:16 Getting up into the air on that triple lutz.
01:03:19 Not carrying as much distance as usual, being a little bit more angled forward.
01:03:23 But with experience and confidence,
01:03:27 you can keep going.
01:03:32 I think she thought she was going to run into that spin there
01:03:34 right before the triple salchow.
01:03:36 A little bit surprised to see that when she turned forward.
01:03:38 Able to navigate into the triple salchow without issue.
01:03:43 So, choreography leading right into the change foot combination spin.
01:03:53 Right back into it.
01:03:58 She's running into everybody's spins today.
01:04:01 A couple spins going on.
01:04:02 It is the end of practice.
01:04:04 It's a courtesy to watch out.
01:04:07 The skater, nonetheless.
01:04:09 It's distracting.
01:04:11 It seems she lost where she wanted to be on the music
01:04:14 or where she wanted to be on the ice.
01:04:16 But she's back into it now.
01:04:18 There we go.
01:04:20 Probably wanting to do more of this step sequence.
01:04:25 See the quality of her skating in the knee bend,
01:04:27 the deep edges of these turns.
01:04:29 Executed cleanly.
01:04:31 Of course, you see her almost run into the boards there,
01:04:42 which is actually one of the comments I got on my Instagram yesterday.
01:04:45 I was like, "Oh, my God, she's so good."
01:04:47 I was like, "Oh, my God, she's so good."
01:04:49 I was like, "Oh, my God, she's so good."
01:04:52 I was like, "Oh, my God, she's so good."
01:04:53 was if the Japanese skaters are used to skating
01:04:55 was if the Japanese skaters are used to skating
01:04:57 on larger pieces of ice, which the answer is yes.
01:04:59 on larger pieces of ice, which the answer is yes.
01:05:01 But they're also really good at skating very close to the boards.
01:05:03 But they're also really good at skating very close to the boards.
01:05:05 They can be easier when there's not other skaters on the ice as well.
01:05:07 They can be easier when there's not other skaters on the ice as well.
01:05:09 But definitely some adjustments to be made.
01:05:11 But definitely some adjustments to be made.
01:05:13 Perhaps that's why we're seeing the first day of practice on Thursday.
01:05:15 Perhaps that's why we're seeing the first day of practice on Thursday.
01:05:17 They get used to the different size of rink.
01:05:19 They get used to the different size of rink.
01:05:21 They get used to the different size of rink.
01:05:22 Of course, right after a long travel from Japan.
01:05:24 Of course, right after a long travel from Japan.
01:05:26 It's a long day.
01:05:28 It's a long ride.
01:05:30 A little off on the triple flip.
01:05:32 Look, her upper body was quite a bit ahead.
01:05:34 She had to take off with that jump.
01:05:36 She had just done one prior to that one.
01:05:38 She had just done one prior to that one.
01:05:40 But that is the same jump that was causing her issues
01:05:42 on the first day of practice.
01:05:44 The second triple flip.
01:05:46 The second triple flip.
01:05:49 (music)
01:05:54 A little tight on that one in the short program.
01:05:56 But fought well to get the triple toe on the second half
01:05:59 of that combination.
01:06:01 (music)
01:06:05 I find the confidence in the timing of that jump.
01:06:07 A very innovative move.
01:06:10 It's right before a graphic sequence.
01:06:13 It's right before a graphic sequence.
01:06:15 It's performance.
01:06:18 She's as wild as the wing and feeling good.
01:06:20 Choreographed by Mary Fonstroy.
01:06:23 (music)
01:06:31 Really showcasing her spinning and her flexibility.
01:06:35 (music)
01:06:42 And as we mentioned, she does have that five point lead
01:06:45 off second.
01:06:47 So there is a small cushion of freedom
01:06:52 in that free program.
01:06:54 A little small space for error.
01:06:56 Of course, you never want to skate with an error though.
01:07:00 It happens, but you don't want it.
01:07:02 - You don't want to be as perfect as possible.
01:07:04 But of course it is relatively early in the season.
01:07:08 - Kari started the season last year a little bit wobbly.
01:07:16 But brought it back for the second half of the season.
01:07:19 So that's just proving her strength and focus
01:07:23 and experience and determination to be ready
01:07:26 later on in the season.
01:07:28 (music)
01:07:32 - Well, this is women's practice.
01:07:34 Number two comes to a close.
01:07:37 Just under a minute left.
01:07:39 Let's take a look at what we might see later today.
01:07:42 - Oh, that was yesterday.
01:07:45 - Oh, this is yesterday.
01:07:46 Okay, my apologies.
01:07:48 We have the free skating today, of course.
01:07:50 And the women's event will start us off

01:08:19 Kirsten Mortals Towers will be your host

01:08:48 And of course, you won't want to miss
01:08:50 the free skating competition with podium placements
01:08:52 on the line starting with the women's event.
01:08:54 And of course, you won't want to miss
01:08:56 the free skating competition with podium placements
01:08:58 on the line starting with the women's event.
01:09:00 And of course, you won't want to miss
01:09:02 the free skating competition with podium placements
