There will be no more official launching of road safety campaigns during the festival seasons, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the operation would go on minus the launch to rid the public mindset that road safety is only paramount during festival periods.

Loke told reporters after delivering a 2024 New Year Mandate to the staff of the ministry on Friday (Jan 12).

00:00 You said that this year you will stop all these safety campaigns during festivals only
00:07 and then you will push all these launches, the budget for launches, the allocations to campaigns.
00:14 How much would you actually, would MOT actually save by not doing it during festivals only?
00:20 Easily a few hundred thousand.
00:22 Usually we spend at least one to two hundred thousand for one launch.
00:26 At least two hundred thousand.
00:27 Just to eat, goodies bag, put up tents, PA system.
00:32 As I said, I mean I don't find it very useful in terms of, or meaningful in terms of that kind of launching
00:39 because usually we just have a media event.
00:42 I mean I can have a media event without any cost, right?
00:45 I can still give the message to the media by calling you to come to Ministry of Transport
00:49 instead of putting up a big tent and all that.
00:53 So, and that is to me, it's form, not the substance.
00:58 What I want to impress upon the ministry and the public is that we must focus on the substance of safety,
01:04 not the form of safety.
01:06 So all these launches I think are necessary.
01:09 As I mentioned, the enforcement is still ongoing.
01:13 Whatever work that JPJ needs to do, they will still go ahead.
01:19 I'm not stopping the enforcement.
01:21 So don't get me wrong, the enforcement is still ongoing.
01:24 The enforcement is still ongoing.
01:25 The joint enforcement is still ongoing.
01:27 What we only don't do is the official events.
01:30 Because every year we hold official events.
01:32 There's no need for official events.
01:34 Just do it.
01:35 Just go ahead.
01:37 Just go ahead.
01:39 (When is this year's launch?)
01:42 Yes, this year's launch, all the health holidays will be held.
01:46 Those who do it, maybe the private sector will do it.
01:48 There are also private sectors who invited me.
01:51 So if they do it, it's on their budget.
01:54 If the Raya concession is to be held, or the vehicle manufacturers are to be held,
02:00 it's up to them.
02:02 Because it's not related to the ministry's budget.
02:04 What I'm stopping is the ministry's budget.
02:07 Because the ministry's budget, we will use that budget for maybe better campaigns.
02:13 Maybe we will use what we have spent a lot of money on this year,
02:20 which is to buy a helmet.
02:23 One helmet is Rp 55.
02:25 We will give Rp 55 for free, to exchange.
02:29 And to our surprise, when we do the campaign,
02:35 we see that the helmets are so bad.
02:40 We receive thousands of helmets.
02:43 Every time we do the campaign, thousands of helmets.
02:45 People line up to exchange new helmets.
02:47 Meaning, they don't buy or use new helmets.
02:53 So it's better to use the change fund,
02:55 add more helmets, and give it to the public.
