Transport Minister Anthony Loke on Tuesday (Nov 14) said that the women-only coaches introduced along the Kajang MRT Line was a small yet powerful message that women’s safety and comfort mattered.
Although male passengers had criticised him heavily over the decision, he stressed that there will be no U-turn and that similar measures may be introduced on other routes and forms of transportation.

00:00 Since September 2023, just two months ago, Prasarana has introduced the latest coach
00:12 for MRT Kajang Line.
00:14 One third of space in the MRT train sets are reserved for women and women together with
00:19 their young children.
00:21 This initiative is a concrete step in the direction of creating safe spaces for women
00:26 during their commutes to work or for other purposes.
00:31 These dedicated coaches provide an environment where women can travel without a fear of harassment
00:36 or uncomfortable situations.
00:38 It is a small yet significant measure that sends a powerful message that every woman's
00:44 safety and comfort matter to us.
00:47 Ladies' coach is just a start.
00:49 Going forward, we have a lot more to do.
00:52 When I started this initiative, I was heavily criticised by the male passengers.
00:57 My social media was flooded with all kinds of comments, even calling me a lot of names.
01:05 But that's okay.
01:06 I face that every day.
01:08 But I feel strongly when something that is right that I need to do, whatever criticism,
01:13 we just have to face it and put in our effort and stand by our ground and we proceed with
01:20 it.
01:21 Without women's coach, there will be no U-turn.
01:22 We proceed with it and we will even launch it.
01:30 I have invited the women minister, Dr Nancy, together with the wife of our Prime Minister,
01:38 Dr Srivanna Sridharanath, together with me, to launch it together.
01:42 This coach to send a powerful message that this is an initiative that we want to proceed,
01:47 not only proceed for MRT but even for other modes of transport, even for LRT in the future.
01:53 But of course we have to look at the capacity-wise and the practicality-wise to how to go about
02:01 it.
02:08 Thank you.
