Loke: Law in the works to fine men who trespass in women-only coaches

The government is drafting legislation to fine men who enter pink coaches reserved for female passengers on public transport.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke addressed the ongoing issue on Wednesday (Aug 14), acknowledging complaints about male passengers encroaching on women-only coaches, and stated that commuter service operators, including Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), have been instructed to enhance monitoring in these areas.

Loke emphasised that men should respect these designated female coaches to ensure the safety, comfort, and confidence of women using public transport.

00:00You mentioned just now about the complaints that you received regarding the rail services.
00:05So there has been an issue where men have been hogging the seats at women's coach and this has been a recurring problem.
00:11And it's not only that they are hogging the seats, they have also been harassing a few women.
00:16But I think the problem, the major issue now is that women who are affected women, they can't seem to find for help from police bantuan
00:25Even though they are there at the station at all times, but the harassment is only done during the peak hours.
00:32So that has been an issue, has that issue come to your attention?
00:36Yes, of course we have the SOP, we have asked the operator, especially the women's coach, KTM and Prasarana for the MRT line.
00:45Indeed, the police bantuan has been moved more often to ensure that the men do not encroach the women's coach.
00:52But of course there are cases like that, I don't deny it.
00:55But by and large, I think people respect, of course, that women's coach.
01:00But there are cases like that, that we will take action from time to time.
01:05Right now, of course, the police bantuan will try to ask them to leave the women's coach.
01:10And of course, in terms of regulations, we are also considering what kind of punishment we can impose.
01:18Right now, there are no regulations that we can impose on men who do not listen.
01:23But this man...
01:26You're not doing it to me, eh?
01:28I'm not saying anything.
01:30How about this?
01:31So we, this man has to have a little respect.
01:36The other women's coach has to have a little respect.
01:39And that is done for one reason.
01:42For safety and also in terms of safety and comfort.
01:47And also confidence.
01:49The passengers of women using public transport.
01:52So I think that should be respected.
01:54But of course, we know there are some people who will disobey any rules.
01:59The police bantuan will be moved.
