00:00 G'day and welcome to the Car Expert podcast.
00:02 I'm your host, Shaun, as always.
00:03 And joining me, as always, is Jay Credentino and Scott Colley.
00:07 Guys, how are you doing today?
00:08 Living the dream, Shaun.
00:09 I would hope so. How about you, Jade?
00:11 I know it's sunny outside in Melbourne.
00:13 It's meant to rain this afternoon, so I'm excited for now.
00:16 Yes, I'm glad we're inside enjoying the sun from here.
00:18 Unrelated to Car Expert, finals football starts tonight.
00:22 OK, well, there you go.
00:23 That's the Victorian on the couch coming out here.
00:26 I'm not so phased by it, are you Jade?
00:29 No, not AFL.
00:30 Well, we are a car podcast, so I think we should move on to cars.
00:33 It's been a really big week in the car world.
00:35 We've had VFACs have just dropped.
00:37 The IAA Mobility, which is the Munich Motor Show,
00:41 it's better known as, has been on in Germany, Munich, obviously.
00:44 So we're going to dive into both of those topics and have a bit of a look
00:48 at what's hot and what's not out of Munich.
00:50 We also have a live cross, well, not live, but we have a cross
00:52 to Paul and Alborz, who have been over in Munich checking things out.
00:55 So stick around for that.
00:57 I'm keen to see this because I know that those things are really hard to film.
01:01 Yes. At these motor shows, because you're filming all of a sudden
01:03 there's 18 German TV reporters who want to film in front of the same car.
01:06 I want to know if they got through it uninterrupted.
01:08 Yes. Well, spoiler alert, they didn't.
01:10 But it wasn't another reporter.
01:12 It was actually a security guard and you will see that coming up.
01:15 So it's something to look forward to.
01:17 But let's get straight into it.
01:18 VFACs have dropped this month.
01:20 Now, if you don't know what VFACs are, it's basically the monthly reporting
01:24 of all new car deliveries.
01:26 It's not sales, it's deliveries of new cars.
01:28 So that's where the numbers come from.
01:30 So I guess what are our headlines, Scott, in VFACs this month?
01:33 So for August 2023, it was a massive month.
01:36 New car supply is improving.
01:38 And on the back of that, we saw a big increase relative to August 2022.
01:42 It's about 15,000 more cars were delivered this month,
01:46 this year than last year, right?
01:48 And that doesn't necessarily mean that there were 15,000 cars more sold,
01:52 but more that brands like Toyota with long wait times have a whole lot of orders
01:56 from the last 12 months that they're finally starting to deliver
01:58 and they're starting to clear that backlog.
02:00 Yeah, about time, right?
02:01 Yeah, I think it's really exciting looking at these like top line numbers
02:04 and a lot of new models coming in as well.
02:07 And I think that number is just going to continuously increase.
02:10 So I'm very excited.
02:11 So before we dive into the nitty gritty of it, one interesting stat
02:15 I wanted to point out was the growth year on year.
02:18 So this time last year, they'd sold 770 or delivered 717,000 cars.
02:22 And this year, they're up to 788,000.
02:25 So the big question is, will we crack the magic million
02:29 new car deliveries in 2023?
02:31 I did the math. Yes.
02:33 If we're on the same trajectory based on averages per month,
02:36 we should hit just over 1.1 million, which is very exciting.
02:40 Cristobal Credentino. Yeah, that's really good. I like that.
02:43 I mean, that is an impressive number considering there's about 13 million
02:47 registered vehicles in Australia.
02:49 Yeah. And there's what, 23 million people.
02:51 Yeah, so it's crazy.
02:53 Remove all the children that can't buy cars.
02:55 But that's what I mean.
02:55 That's a lot of cars. That's a lot of cars.
02:58 A lot of especially we don't manufacture anything here.
03:00 Everything's coming in through ports.
03:01 That is really impressive.
03:03 But let's dive into some of the numbers now, Jade.
03:05 I know you've got a little list prepared there
03:07 and you want to talk about something in particular.
03:09 So I'll let you take the stage to start with.
03:12 Well, look, I think you've got obviously two ways to look at it.
03:14 You can look at the top 20 brands and the top 20 models, both of which
03:18 Toyota seem to be quite comfortably in both.
03:21 Not a huge surprise.
03:22 That is the normal situation in Australia.
03:24 What's really interesting here,
03:26 Toyota, since May, has had a massive increase in their deliveries,
03:30 which we did expect after, you know, clearing all that backlog.
03:33 But as of August, I'm going to count here from my notes.
03:37 One, two, three, four, five, six, seven categories
03:40 in this month's VFACs go straight to Toyota.
03:43 So it means that they're coming back.
03:45 RAV4, which had extensive long delays.
03:48 I remember about 18 months ago, they were looking at two,
03:51 even sometimes two and a half to three year delays on them.
03:54 That's now dominating its segment.
03:56 So it's really exciting to see Toyota come back and those customers
03:59 who really were waiting a really long time to finally get their cars.
04:02 And the good news on the back of that is not just if you're waiting for a car,
04:05 but if you're trying to buy a new car, all of a sudden the power is starting to shift again.
04:09 For a really long time, we saw dealers charging big markups.
04:11 But I actually spoke to a dealer this morning who said he's come back
04:15 from leave to having 70 cars in stock.
04:17 Wow. And that means there are deals to be had because these dealers
04:20 that don't want cars sitting around rather than paying you off
04:24 against another buyer and making you pay more, they're going to give you a deal.
04:26 They're going to throw in servicing, something like that to get the car off their lot.
04:30 Yes. So I think the big penalty shootout this month went between the Hilux
04:33 and the Ranger, unsurprisingly, but there was a two cars difference,
04:38 which is, which is amazing.
04:41 It's like, yeah, if they had Ford squeeze three more cars on the boat,
04:44 that would have changed the game for them this month.
04:46 So very impressive.
04:47 And I think year on year, we've seen a big increase in Ranger sales.
04:50 Now, we've got to remember this time last year, the old Ranger was on the way out.
04:55 The new Ranger was on the way in.
04:56 So it's not a great statistic to look at year on year.
04:59 But to see to see them bring it to Hilux,
05:02 especially considering how much Hilux demand
05:06 there's been over the last few years, is really impressive.
05:08 The other key stat when you're looking at Ranger and Hilux sales
05:11 is the type of sales they are.
05:12 And this data, which is put together by the peak body for car makers,
05:15 splits out four by two and four by four sales.
05:18 And the Ranger dominates the four by four sales,
05:21 which are the Wildtracks, the XLTs, the expensive ones where Ford
05:24 really makes money.
05:25 Toyota still sells plenty of those, but its lead over Ford is in the four by twos,
05:29 which are the ones that go to...
05:31 That's all the fleet, the houses, the workmates, the mining fleets, that sort of thing.
05:34 There's about 30% of the Hilux sales were four by twos, right?
05:38 So you're talking workmate, single cab.
05:40 Yeah.
05:41 The cheaper cars with lower margins on them that go to big fleets
05:44 that don't necessarily want all the bells and whistles.
05:46 They just need a car that will work nonstop for them.
05:49 Yeah, that makes sense.
05:50 That makes sense.
05:50 The other surprising one that sort of crept up here is Isuzu, isn't it Jade?
05:55 I always have a little soft spot for Isuzu in the VFAC charts.
06:00 I think they only have two models and still both models are always in the top 20.
06:04 Not always, but most of the time in the top 20.
06:07 So it's really nice to see the D-Max is, you know, in top five
06:12 in the MUX, sitting at 17, but it's just behind the Everest.
06:16 So I think that that's going to be my new favorite thing to look out for every month.
06:20 Is it Everest or MUX?
06:22 Or CX-9.
06:24 Yeah.
06:24 Yeah, right. OK, so it's a big month for VFACs.
06:30 It's a big month for sales.
06:32 And I think we're going to just keep seeing this growth.
06:34 You know, like we spoke about a couple of weeks ago,
06:35 Ford have rented a boat to bring in Rangers and Everest.
06:39 There's a whole bunch of new cars coming towards the end of this year,
06:42 especially in the EV segment.
06:43 So I think we're going to keep seeing this grow.
06:45 Can I throw a couple of anomalies at you just quickly?
06:47 Yeah, totally.
06:48 Before we move on, there are two things that caught my eye
06:50 that I'm really interested for your thoughts on.
06:52 The first is Lexus.
06:54 For the first time ever in Australia, it's sold more than 10,000 cars in a year.
06:57 And it's only the end of August on the sales charts.
07:00 So do Audi and BMW have anything to be worried about?
07:03 Well, Lexus have been hampered by stock issues as well.
07:07 That's same as Toyota, obviously.
07:09 So I think that's really impressive for them to do that.
07:11 So NX a big seller for them.
07:12 Yes, that's what I was going to say.
07:13 Yeah, NX seems to be dominating their, I guess, their golden child.
07:18 And they've got lots of them.
07:21 Yeah, so the base petrol NX250, we know dealers that work with CarXpert
07:26 have these cars in stock and ready to deliver, which is pretty unusual.
07:29 We also know the hybrid wait times are coming down.
07:32 But certain dealers, if you walk in today, you can actually walk out
07:35 with a brand new NX250, and that's not something you could say for a long time.
07:39 The other one is we talk a lot about electric cars on this podcast.
07:43 The Nissan Patrol, which is 11 years old.
07:46 Yeah. And it's powered only by a V8 and has a screen in the middle
07:49 that is like a Nokia phone, has just had its biggest ever month.
07:53 It was only narrowly outsold by the Toyota Land Cruiser.
07:56 Why are people still buying this car?
07:59 Is it because it has a V8?
08:01 V8's a big thing, yeah.
08:02 But as we saw in our off-road mega test and our towing mega test,
08:05 it just nails that touring brief.
08:07 And I think there is I think there's still a huge demand for people touring,
08:11 because if you look at a little off topic from VFACs,
08:13 but caravan sales are still through the roof in Australia.
08:15 So there is a lot of demand for a vehicle that can do all that
08:19 and have the space for the kids and be comfortable.
08:21 So I'd be interested to see in the next few months.
08:24 Will it eventually take over the Land Cruiser?
08:26 I think the Land Cruiser, I'm not going to say it's overpriced,
08:30 but it is more expensive.
08:33 I'm very careful with what I say, but the Patrol is cheaper.
08:37 And I know that last year the Patrol had supply issues
08:40 and that's obviously been cleared up.
08:41 And now with Patrol Warrior coming through, is that going to increase even more?
08:45 I think Toyota might need to, you know, have a look around at their competitors
08:50 and seriously consider, you know, Patrol taking the lead.
08:53 I think what Toyota does have up its sleeve is that Land Cruiser name is so strong.
08:57 And I know the Patrol's been held back by wait times.
08:59 There was a period there where if you wanted a 300 series Land Cruiser,
09:02 you could either wait for 12, 18 months, something like that,
09:05 or pay more than $200,000 for a dealer demo.
09:08 So Nissan's not the only one dealing with those stock problems.
09:11 And I think for now, the Land Cruiser is pretty safe.
09:13 Yeah, I'd agree.
09:15 And the fact that Nissan only have basically two versions of the Patrol,
09:19 like a base one and a fancy one, which are not really that different.
09:23 No, not really.
09:24 And Toyota has such a variety, such a fan base.
09:27 Patrol is not selling to every farmer in the bush.
09:31 I do agree.
09:33 Can someone in the comments, I'm going to down the barrel,
09:35 hey, hey, it's Saturday style here.
09:37 Can someone in the comments do the maths on how much petrol you can buy
09:40 with the $40,000 difference between a top spec Patrol
09:43 and a top spec Land Cruiser, please? I've always wondered this.
09:45 Yes, right.
09:46 So it's podcast@carexpert.com.au
09:48 If you're a math whiz and could figure that one out, we'd love to know that.
09:52 Or not a math whiz, just have a calculator.
09:53 Yeah, well, yes. I don't know how one of those works.
09:55 I don't know about you guys.
09:56 We might ask Siri later.
09:57 I studied journalism for a reason. It's not numbers.
09:59 Well, there you go. I think that wraps up VFACs for this month.
10:01 A lot of great stuff happening.
10:02 We will put a link in the description of the show
10:05 where you can read the Car Expert article with all the details, all the breakdown.
10:08 There's a lot of really interesting stuff there.
10:10 And if you have a new car on order, you're waiting for it to be delivered.
10:14 Leave a comment. Let us know.
10:15 But we will move on to the IAA Mobility or the Munich Motor Show,
10:20 depending on how you want to look at it.
10:21 Which used to be the Frankfurt Motor Show.
10:23 Yes. But has been moved from Frankfurt to Munich for reasons I don't quite understand.
10:28 Logistics?
10:29 Munich Motor Show is illiterative.
10:31 It's catchy. I have no idea.
10:32 Anyway, it's good.
10:34 It's sort of one of the first big motor shows I've actually seen back on the calendar
10:38 since COVID.
10:39 There was actually, I recall right at the start of COVID,
10:42 a lot of journos were about to head off to motor shows and it just stopped.
10:44 Yeah, it was just before the Geneva show, I think, which is the biggest in the world.
10:47 Yeah. And is going to be in Qatar.
10:48 Yes, in Qatar. Explain that to me.
10:50 That's what I wanted to mention.
10:50 Yeah. How? I don't know.
10:53 You know, it's Switzerland.
10:54 So it's like having the 2020 Olympics in 2021.
10:57 Yes. Yeah, that's true.
10:59 But to give us a rundown on what's actually been happening,
11:01 Paul and Albo are on the ground.
11:02 We're going to cross to them live and they're going to let us know,
11:05 fellas, what's going on in Munich?
11:07 Thank you, Sean.
11:08 Mate, we're at the Munich Motor Show.
11:10 It's been a while for motor shows.
11:11 I know. 2019 for Germany.
11:13 Yeah. I mean, it's it's crazy.
11:15 We used to go to motor shows like every year around the world
11:18 and they've all just died down.
11:19 But I feel like they're starting to get a bit of a resurgence now.
11:22 Definitely not Frankfurt, though.
11:23 I got to tell you, it's a little bit different.
11:25 It's a bit smaller and it's all spread out.
11:27 Well, what we thought we'd do.
11:29 I'm being hosted by Volkswagen at the moment.
11:30 You're with BMW.
11:31 I thought we'd quickly run through the new stuff that we have
11:34 with the brands that we're with.
11:36 The guys back in Melbourne will then run you through
11:38 all the other stuff that's gone on at the show.
11:40 For Volkswagen, I was pretty surprised to see GTIs going electric.
11:45 So I got to ask this.
11:46 Is it only electric or is it going to be offered in electric?
11:48 Well, offered in electric.
11:50 So IDGTI is basically going to be front wheel drive, electric, sporty.
11:54 And why is it front wheel drive if it's electric?
11:56 Well, I think they want to preserve GTI, right?
11:59 And they've got GTX stuff, which is all wheel drive and sporty and stuff.
12:03 So I think to me, they just want to keep that branding.
12:05 And it seems like they want to capitalize on that branding to make it work.
12:08 The thing I'm a little concerned about, they're saying it's coming in 2027.
12:12 2027? Yeah.
12:14 And they said it was 90 percent complete.
12:16 It's like, how have you not got it ready to go?
12:19 So but they're saying that...
12:21 Hey, good for us internal combustion fans.
12:23 Well, yes.
12:24 And they're saying as well, 25,000 euros is what they're targeting
12:27 for the ID. All and the GTI.
12:29 And I think that should mean affordability.
12:31 By that point, battery tech will have improved.
12:34 It should all become sort of cheaper by that point as well.
12:36 So that should be really interesting. Yeah.
12:37 And it looks cool. It's nice and sporty.
12:38 It's got flared wheel arches. It's all sort of happening.
12:40 In terms of other stuff with the Volkswagen Group Q6 e-tron,
12:44 they've previewed the new interior.
12:46 So I love that.
12:46 So they've gone away from that Audi style of haptic feedback screens
12:49 that are quite low.
12:50 Got that curved display.
12:52 Really looks quite impressive.
12:54 CUPRA, they have a concept car that looks absolutely unreal.
12:59 Is it electric?
13:00 It's electric.
13:01 Everything is electric.
13:02 Yes, exactly. These days.
13:03 So tell me about BMW.
13:05 What's what's...
13:06 Look, BMW has a massive unveiling at the show. BMW and MINI.
13:09 MINI, obviously, with the new CUPRA electric, new countryman electric.
13:11 They're actually being built out of China by GWM.
13:14 So that's kind of interesting.
13:15 GWM?
13:16 GWM, yes.
13:17 But BMW itself has the new newer class vision concept,
13:21 which previews a new design language.
13:23 So it's a complete departure.
13:25 The grill is smaller.
13:26 There is a small grill.
13:28 Although, based on the poll I ran on Instagram, people still didn't like it.
13:32 And I was like, what more do they need to do?
13:33 The grill is big. The grill is small.
13:35 Someone's got to like it.
13:36 It actually looks really good. I really like it.
13:38 It's going to basically underpin all the new design languages from BMW.
13:42 And it looks great.
13:43 However, they showed a sedan, like a 3 Series.
13:45 But the first new class of design will actually be an SUV.
13:48 And it'll come in 2025, built out of Hungary.
13:51 And we should get it sort of around that time.
13:52 So it looks really nice.
13:53 So, I mean, they're all focusing on electric cars.
13:56 We're seeing that Volkswagen is partnering with Chinese companies
13:59 to do what they need to do.
14:01 They're actually setting up their own Chinese, I guess, philosophy.
14:06 So everything will just happen in China and it will just stay in China.
14:09 And I think strategically, it means that they can go into a price war in China
14:13 and not devalue their brand globally.
14:15 Because if you sell a Q6 e-tron in Europe
14:18 and then one in China for, you know, two thirds of the price.
14:21 I know, but with MINI, all the electric ones coming out of China.
14:24 - Yeah. - Even for Europe.
14:25 - Oh, really? - Yeah.
14:26 - So it's a little different. - That's interesting.
14:28 It is interesting.
14:29 And, you know, like, I mean, the iX3 comes out of China, so it's not new.
14:32 Yeah.
14:33 But I do wonder as we go forward, I guess we have to get used to it.
14:36 Polestar is Chinese, Tesla is Chinese.
14:38 Like, they're all built in China and they're pretty good.
14:40 So I guess it doesn't really matter.
14:42 To me, I mean, we drive a Tesla made in China.
14:44 - There's no difference to me. - You drive a Tesla.
14:46 My wife drives a Tesla.
14:48 I drive a Raptor. Sometimes when the diff works.
14:50 And then the other one as well, I thought I'd touch on.
14:52 Volkswagen announced they were investing something like $180 billion
14:56 over the next three to five years on this plan that they have
14:59 for transitioning towards electric.
15:02 - That's a lot of money. - $180 billion.
15:03 I suspect they're taking a lot of the money from the IPO of Porsche
15:06 to make it happen.
15:07 But they are throwing so much money at this.
15:11 - Well, they need to, though, right? - It just flies by the line.
15:12 I feel like as a brand,
15:14 they're not as up to date with the EV stuff as some of the others.
15:17 And I like that because I'm not an EV guy.
15:19 But I feel like that's obviously put them in a little bit of a,
15:22 I guess, uncompetitive disadvantage to some of their competitors.
15:25 So, I don't know.
15:26 I was really surprised to see that Golf GTI electric
15:29 and it being front wheel drive.
15:31 It's kind of like calling the Taycan "Tobo".
15:34 It doesn't have a "Tobo".
15:35 So just because it was front wheel drive,
15:37 doesn't mean it needs to continue to be front wheel drive.
15:39 But I guess some people love that too.
15:41 Yeah, look, we had actually planned to do like a proper sit down podcast here,
15:46 but we've been so constrained on time
15:48 that we've just got these very short wraps.
15:49 So that is all we've got time for.
15:51 We're already being hurried up here.
15:52 They're packing up the stand around us.
15:55 I think this is cool.
15:55 I'm hoping that motor shows are back.
15:57 I love the buzz, the excitement of seeing these new vehicles.
16:00 And look, if this is the new format where they've got satellites,
16:03 sights outside of the main hall like this, whatever,
16:07 Geneva Motor Show is actually going to be in Qatar.
16:09 - It's still called the Geneva Motor Show.
16:11 - Which is kind of weird.
16:11 But anyway, so let us know what you reckon in the comment section below.
16:14 What do you think about some of the new products that are rolling out here?
16:17 What do you think about GTI?
16:17 What do you think about the new Class?
16:18 Or what do you think about all the other stuff that's going on at the Munich Motor Show?
16:23 Back to you, Sean.
16:25 - Thanks, guys.
16:26 I hope you're having fun over there in Munich.
16:28 I know Paul is about to head off from the IAA Mobility
16:31 to drive a couple of interesting Volkswagen products.
16:34 - That's one way of putting it.
16:36 - Yes, so make sure you subscribe to the YouTube channel to see that
16:38 because we'll have videos dropping over the next couple of weeks for that.
16:41 But let's play a little game, guys.
16:43 I wanted to play Hot or Not with some of the reviews.
16:46 - Members of the car-- oh.
16:48 - Yeah, no, no, not that one.
16:49 - Different thing.
16:50 - A little game of Hot or Not with some of the reveals from the IAA Mobility in Munich.
16:54 - I feel like I'm back in high school.
16:56 - So this is like the original version of the Facebook.
17:00 - Which one of us is Zuckerberg?
17:01 - Yeah, you, definitely.
17:04 So I'm going to run through a list of some of the cool reveals.
17:07 And I want to know from you guys whether it's hot or not.
17:09 And if not, why?
17:12 Yes.
17:13 So we'll start off with the Volkswagen ID GTI.
17:16 - Scott? - Hot.
17:18 - Love it. - Jade?
17:18 - I think what they're trying to do is great.
17:20 I think they're trying to fill that-- they can see a gap when they go to EV only
17:26 and have that GTI badge kind of lost.
17:29 So I understand what they're trying to do there.
17:32 Do I love it?
17:33 Not yet. - The rule is not whether you love it,
17:34 whether it's hot or not.
17:35 - No, I don't know.
17:37 I don't know. - I'm going to fight you on this one.
17:39 The GTI badge is a bit lost at the moment.
17:41 - Yeah, that's my point, yeah.
17:42 - So R has kind of taken over as the hero for Volkswagen.
17:45 They've got GTX, et cetera.
17:47 The idea of an affordable front-wheel drive hot hatch that is also electric
17:51 is kind of a throwback to what GTI used to be.
17:53 I think it's Volkswagen giving it the respect it deserves,
17:56 and I'm excited to see what they do with it.
17:58 - I do want to bring up something.
17:59 Albo's just mentioned that it is only front-wheel drive,
18:02 which we're seeing in a few things.
18:03 BMW, the RX1 is going to be front-wheel drive only.
18:07 From a vehicle handling standpoint, do you guys think that that's the best
18:10 option for electric?
18:11 Or should they be focusing rear-wheel drive, front-wheel steering?
18:15 - Given the choice, I would prefer to drive a rear-wheel drive car.
18:18 But I think in the case of the ID.GTI, front-wheel drive can also be a
18:24 selling point.
18:24 You look at the Honda Civic Type R, for example, and the fact it drives really
18:28 well is enhanced by the fact it's a front-drive car.
18:31 With electric cars, there is an opportunity for Volkswagen to make it handle like a
18:35 really special front-wheel drive sort of focused hot hatch.
18:39 And I think they can make it a feature rather than a drawback.
18:42 Can I also say what's not hot is the people playing table tennis outside our
18:45 office right now?
18:46 - I do apologize.
18:46 If you can hear that, there is a ping pong game going on outside our office.
18:50 So apologies for that one.
18:51 - It's not from me.
18:52 - But okay.
18:53 But okay.
18:53 Thanks, Scott.
18:54 I appreciate that.
18:54 I guess the thing is torque steer has always been a problem in hot hatches.
18:59 But that potentially could be overcome with EVs because they can direct drive
19:03 individual wheels.
19:04 So I guess we'll have to just wait and see what happens with that one.
19:07 Okay, next one.
19:08 I know this is hot, but let's see what you guys think.
19:12 The Cupra Dark Rebel.
19:13 What do you think?
19:14 - I am here for it.
19:15 - Okay, that's a hot one, Jade.
19:16 Scott?
19:17 - Yeah.
19:18 - I'm actually a...
19:19 I'm a...
19:19 Can I give it like a tepid?
19:21 - Oh, come on.
19:21 It looks like a Batmobile.
19:22 It's awesome.
19:23 - It looks like a Batmobile, but I don't understand why we're bothering
19:27 with 100,000 euro Cupra.
19:29 I think their whole thing at the moment is affordable sports cars.
19:32 - They make a $3 million Beetle.
19:34 Like, the Bugatti Chiron's however much now.
19:36 - No, I know they do.
19:38 But if you're Cupra, I love the idea of a Cupra sports car,
19:41 but in my head it was always an affordable kind of people's sports car.
19:46 And we know that this might have Porsche Cayman bits underneath it,
19:49 the next gen car.
19:50 It might cost less than 100,000 euro.
19:53 Awesome.
19:54 Give me a fun little lightweight electric sports car that's the same price as a
19:57 Leon or a Born, and I'm here for it.
19:59 - I don't think it's going to be a car that someone will drive every day.
20:03 So I think having that be a little bit more expensive,
20:07 I think people will still consider it.
20:09 I think the thing that I quite like was a throwback to when I was 12.
20:14 It has the Cupra meta hype, which is like their meta universe.
20:19 And it's just like playing the simps.
20:21 And I'm like, this is why I'm here for it.
20:23 Nobody else has done this before.
20:24 It's giving me ultimate throwback vibes to 2003, 2004.
20:31 - Big throwback that one.
20:33 For our older listeners, we apologize.
20:36 - Yeah, the Simsies.
20:37 - Yes.
20:38 Okay, so I'm probably going to botch the pronunciation of this one.
20:41 - Yeah, go on, give us your best German accent.
20:43 - BMW New Class.
20:45 So what do we think, Scott?
20:47 - Hot.
20:47 I like it.
20:48 - Hot?
20:48 - J?
20:48 - Hot.
20:49 - So this is a really important car for BMW.
20:52 The New Class, New Class.
20:54 Oh, God.
20:56 I'm going to regret that.
20:58 The New Class name is a nod to the cars that essentially saved BMW in the 1960s.
21:03 So this is not something they'd bandy about lightly.
21:05 And it's their next generation of electric cars that they're going to have really fast
21:08 charging, longer ranges, competitive performance, and thank God, cleaner designs than current
21:14 BMWs.
21:15 I'm very here for it.
21:16 - All right, this is one that's probably going to raise some eyebrows in the viewers.
21:21 But the BYD Seal U.
21:24 Jade?
21:25 It's my favorite kitchen cleaning product.
21:27 - I put a big tick next to it.
21:28 - Oh, okay.
21:29 Interesting.
21:30 - I like it.
21:31 I think it's something that a lot of people, it's not too out of the box.
21:35 It's not something that people will be polarized by.
21:38 I think it's very sleek, nice, modern design.
21:42 And based on the article that we wrote, it's going to be about the size of a Hyundai Santa
21:47 Fe, so it's quite big.
21:48 - And could come to Australia based on--
21:50 - And might come to Australia.
21:51 So I'm pretty excited to see, especially adding more BYD products, to see what it's going
21:56 to look like.
21:57 It's a hot from me.
21:58 Scott?
21:59 - Scott?
21:59 - It's fine.
22:00 - Meh.
22:00 - It's an electric SUV.
22:01 - It is a bit meh.
22:02 - Yeah.
22:03 I like what BYD is doing with a lot of their cars.
22:05 I think the ADO3 is one of the best electric cars in Australia at the moment.
22:08 I'm sure this will be a really competent, really comfortable, well-priced electric SUV,
22:12 but it doesn't get me all hot under the collar.
22:14 - Does it have the rotating screen or we don't know yet?
22:17 - I've only seen pictures, which I'm sure we'll put up on the video.
22:20 - Is that why you were tilting your computer before?
22:22 - Yeah, yeah.
22:23 I just turned my laptop to the side.
22:27 Yeah.
22:27 I don't know.
22:28 We'll come back to you.
22:29 - All right.
22:29 Well, we'll go from building your dreams to life's good with the LG Omnipod.
22:35 - I don't even know what to think of this.
22:37 - Scott?
22:37 - Yeah.
22:38 So, this is not the only electronics company that's trying to get into the car game at the moment.
22:42 We know Sony has some concept cars.
22:43 - Sony's been trying for a long time.
22:45 - It's been trying for a long time.
22:46 Foxconn, which builds the iPhone and the Xbox.
22:48 - Didn't Apple have a concept car, electric concept car ages ago?
22:52 - It's been on again, off again.
22:53 It's the Brangelina of the car world, that Apple car.
22:56 The Omnipod, it's another one I'm indifferent towards.
22:59 It's essentially an opportunity for LG to put lots of its screens in an autonomous car pod and to control that whole experience.
23:07 There's a lot of money in it.
23:08 I am not remotely interested.
23:10 - Jade?
23:10 - No.
23:11 I think the concept is cool, but it should stay as a concept.
23:15 It should not go into production.
23:17 I don't think it'll do well in Australia, maybe in Asia.
23:21 There's a market for it, but it's a little bit too much.
23:24 - It is a very cool idea.
23:25 I think the best place for it is shuttling you between Sydney Domestic and Sydney International Airport.
23:30 - Yes, that's exactly it.
23:31 - That is where it belongs.
23:32 And if you've flown to America, I'm sure you know what to expect.
23:35 - Yeah, a lot of those airports have transfers between.
23:37 - The Dubai one is incredible.
23:38 - Exactly.
23:39 And I think that's a great place for it.
23:41 They can put advertising all over it, and it's clean for the environment.
23:45 - I'm going to be that jet-lagged by the time I land.
23:47 I'm not seeing any of that advertising.
23:48 That's besides the point.
23:49 - Because the OLED is lost on you.
23:52 - All right, let's move on to one that's probably a little more familiar to most people.
23:55 The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA.
23:57 Jade, I'll go straight to you on this one.
23:59 - Ooh, interesting.
24:00 I quite liked the design.
24:03 I know a few people in the Car Expert team didn't vibe it.
24:06 - Looks like a computer mouse.
24:07 - Yeah, I'm going to be hot.
24:09 I'm going hot.
24:09 - Scott?
24:10 - Not.
24:11 - Not?
24:11 - The design, I have no interest in.
24:13 A lot of what Mercedes is doing at the moment, that sort of smooth, featureless thing, I'm not a huge fan of.
24:19 - It's very Vision EQS, isn't it?
24:21 - Exactly.
24:22 But I do like the look of the interior, and I love the idea of really long range, more than 500 kilometres.
24:27 - Yeah, it was 750 anticipated.
24:31 In inverted commas, 750 kilometres.
24:33 - And Tesla Model 3 pricing.
24:34 So that is hot.
24:35 The design is not.
24:36 - Yes, I'm not a fan of the headlights and taillights on it.
24:40 But the rest of it's kind of cool.
24:41 All right, we'll move on.
24:42 This one, I don't know how to feel about this one.
24:45 But let's see what you guys think.
24:46 The Polestar Synergy.
24:48 The name is terrible.
24:49 You know why it's called the Synergy, though?
24:51 Because it was designed half by the Polestar design team, and then half by submissions from the public.
24:57 - I was going to say government lobby, but fairly close.
24:59 - No, not quite.
24:59 So it's the Polestar McPolestar face.
25:02 I think this is hot.
25:03 - Yeah.
25:03 Jade?
25:04 - I'm going hot.
25:04 I would love to see Scott get in this.
25:06 It's 1.07 metres tall.
25:11 - That's not happening, I don't think.
25:12 Unless it's a race car with feet above bum sort of situation, I'm going to struggle.
25:16 - Fair enough.
25:16 All right.
25:17 - Keen for that.
25:17 - Last one to cap it all off.
25:19 The Renault Scenic E-Tech, which is an absolute mouthful.
25:22 But Jade, what do you think?
25:23 - I read an article before it got released, and in camouflage, it looked pretty cool.
25:29 It's expected to have up to 620 kilometres of range with the bigger battery pack.
25:36 So I think it'll be really cool, especially as a consumer product.
25:39 If it does come to Australia, I'm keen to see Renault take on the electric vehicle market here.
25:46 - I'm with Jade.
25:47 Hot.
25:47 I really like the way it looks, and we've got the Megane E-Tech Electric.
25:51 I don't know why they say E-Tech and electric in the name, but that's coming to Australia from about 60 grand.
25:55 If they can price this just above it when it does come to Australia, it's going to be a really interesting option.
25:59 - All right.
26:00 So I'd like to know if you guys are watching, what do you think is hot from this list?
26:04 But also, do you remember going to motor shows in Australia?
26:06 Leave us a comment.
26:07 Let us know.
26:08 I remember the last one I went to in Australia was the 2008 Sydney Motor Show, where they debuted the Amarok.
26:14 You were there?
26:14 You would have been like this tall.
26:15 - I was very small.
26:16 - Taller than I am now.
26:18 - Holden and Ford with the dominant stands.
26:21 Falcons and Commodores.
26:22 But yeah, they debuted the Amarok, and I remember thinking, "That is going to be a game changer."
26:26 And it was.
26:27 It was really cool.
26:28 - You had good foresight on that.
26:29 I actually took a whole lot of friends to one of the last Melbourne motor shows, what, 2006, 2007, for my 10th or 11th birthday.
26:36 - Yeah, wow.
26:37 Better than a Macca's birthday party.
26:38 - It was better than a Macca's birthday party, definitely.
26:40 - But yeah, I think bucket list, if you're looking at a motor show, bucket list.
26:43 It's not a traditional motor show, but SEMA, absolutely have to do.
26:47 I don't know about you, Scott, you got a bucket list motor show?
26:49 - I'm going to actually go, not a motor show, I'm going Goodwood.
26:53 It's on my bucket list too.
26:54 - It's kind of a motor show.
26:54 - Yeah, the festival of speed is something I desperately want to do.
26:57 Jade, you got one?
26:58 - I'm going to go Goodwood, but I did make a pledge to Scully a couple of weeks ago that by the time I turn 30, I'm going to go to every single motor show around the world.
27:06 - There's not many, so it should be easy.
27:08 - Yeah, it should be fine.
27:09 But yeah, that's my pledge, public.
27:11 - Well, if anything's caught your eye at Munich or there's anything currently on sale in Australia that has caught your eye, head to Help Me Car Expert on Google.
27:18 And what we'll do is we'll help you get a really good deal on a brand new car.
27:24 You head to Help Me Car Expert on Google, it'll open up a page where you see lots of pictures of Paul, and he'll be able to help you find the right price, help you connect to a dealer, and make sure that you get in your brand new car sooner rather than later.
27:35 Scott, are you impressed with the way I say new, by the way?
27:37 I just thought you'd point that out.
27:39 - I think you've taken some inspiration from BMW new class.
27:42 - I have, yes.
27:43 So yeah, if you are looking to buy a new car, head to Google, type in Help Me Car Expert.
27:48 And if you do buy a new car through there, leave us a comment and let us know what you bought.
27:51 Let us know what the experiences were like, because we're very curious to hear your thoughts on it.
27:55 All right, well, we'll move on to our last topic of the day.
27:58 It's actually one that Jade has a bit of experience in.
28:01 This is kind of fun.
28:02 Isuzu run what's called the iVenture Club, and basically it's an opportunity for Isuzu owners to go out bush bashing, off-roading, and understand how four-wheel drives work.
28:11 But Jade, you've actually done two of them now, is that correct?
28:15 - Yeah, that's right.
28:16 I did kind of mention it very briefly in last week's episode when we were looking at the MU-X versus the CX-9.
28:22 So I've got some current stats.
28:25 So they originally, they first launched in 2015, so it's been going on for quite a while.
28:32 There's been 5,800 Isuzu owners that have participated, so quite a lot.
28:37 And since 2015, there's been 280 events all over Australia.
28:42 Now, they've just introduced a towing training, again, based on last episode.
28:46 - Excellent.
28:47 The more towing training, the better.
28:48 - Yes.
28:48 - They did that because of our last episode.
28:50 - Exactly, yeah.
28:51 - Yeah, well, thanks, Isuzu.
28:52 I much appreciate it.
28:54 - So yeah, as you mentioned, I've done two.
28:56 I'm looking forward to doing another two later in the year.
28:59 One will be a towing one, and the other will be on sand.
29:02 So I'm very keen to get behind the wheel.
29:04 I think it's probably the greatest thing a manufacturer can do for a consumer.
29:11 There was a stat floating around that 90% of Isuzu buyers or four-wheel drive buyers never actually take their cars off-road.
29:18 So I think giving people the confidence in a controlled environment to do so is really important.
29:23 And I think a lot of people, it would encourage them to then go to the great outdoors.
29:27 - These are really cool events because I think what holds a lot of people back with their cars,
29:32 whether they're sports cars or off-roaders, is confidence.
29:35 You know, these cars have such incredible capabilities, everything from a BMW M car,
29:39 which has really clever traction control on a racetrack you can play with,
29:43 through to the Isuzu stuff that will take you a long way off-road, just like all their rivals will.
29:49 Once you know what these systems can do and understand how to use them and have some support to learn in a controlled environment,
29:55 it's amazing how far these cars will take you and what you can do with them that maybe you didn't think you could.
29:59 I've also done one of these iVentures. - Yes, that's right.
30:02 - I found it really, really informative and it's made me a more confident off-roader, no matter what I get in,
30:08 because there's some really basic stuff about tyre pressures, when to use low range, diff locks, that sort of thing,
30:13 that if you weren't sure, you might never touch the buttons.
30:17 - I think the thing that's...
30:18 A lot of people, if they Google how to go four-wheel driving, they're going to get met with a lot of negative things.
30:23 - Don't do this, don't do that. - Exactly, right.
30:25 But the thing is, four-wheel driving is a fantastic way to see the country.
30:28 There's some amazing... Like, Victorian High Country is phenomenal.
30:31 You know, a lot of the Sand Islands in Queensland, you don't have to go out and do the telegraph track on your first outing.
30:36 But I think that manufacturers doing things like this is key to engagement with their customers.
30:42 It's also key to encouraging people to do safer driving,
30:45 because there are many, many examples on the internet of people getting stuck or in a very bad situation.
30:50 - Some of them funny, some of them dangerous.
30:53 But, I mean, one of the best trips I ever did was four-wheel driving for a week on Fraser Island,
30:57 and it is absolutely phenomenal. - I did that too, not with iVenture,
31:01 but that was my first experience four-wheel driving.
31:04 We had Land Cruiser Troopies, and we did that for a whole week,
31:08 and it was the introduction to four-wheel driving that I needed.
31:12 I couldn't drive because they were all manuals, RIP.
31:15 - We'll get to that next week. - Yeah.
31:17 But I think if I...
31:20 That's my ultimate goal, is to travel around Australia in a four-wheel drive eventually,
31:24 and having the training that I've had from Isuzu
31:27 just gives me all that more confidence to go out and actually make it happen.
31:31 - So if you do have an Isuzu, obviously there's iVenture Club,
31:34 but it's amazing how many brands do offer something like this.
31:37 I know if you've got something expensive in German,
31:39 they'll let you take your car or someone else's car to the track.
31:42 Audi, BMW, Merc, all do it.
31:45 Interesting also is Hyundai does a really good job with this, with its N Festival.
31:49 If you've got an i20 or an i30 or a Kona N,
31:53 you can go to these N Festivals and drive your car on track
31:56 with other what they call Nthusiasts.
31:58 - I'll have to come up with that one. - Clever, hey.
32:02 And get to experience your car,
32:04 but also just meet other people who have invested their own money in a product
32:07 and kind of feel their passion too.
32:09 And there's so many cars out there and people out there that aren't interested in that,
32:12 and that's fine, but if you do care,
32:15 it's so cool just to be surrounded by people who want to learn with you
32:19 and sort of feel the same passion you do.
32:21 Shout out to Hyundai as well, because if you do that,
32:23 you maintain your warranty on the car,
32:25 because they actually have a track day warranty.
32:27 So I think that's a really good initiative from them.
32:30 Just to be clear, that warranty doesn't cover loss of talent.
32:33 No, no, Barry R, meeting Barry R is not the way to maintain that warranty.
32:38 What I'd like to know from you guys is what, not what manufacturer,
32:42 but what would you like to see that's available to just the general public,
32:46 Joe public, and easily accessible to them?
32:48 What would you like to see training offered, Jade?
32:52 That is such a good question.
32:54 Scott, you go first, actually.
32:56 I would actually really like to see more skid pan days.
33:00 Sydney Motorsports Park and Driving Solutions up in New South Wales
33:03 do an awesome job of this.
33:05 In Victoria, it's less prominent,
33:07 but you can essentially rock up in whatever you've got
33:10 and try to get your car sideways on a wet skid pan,
33:13 learn about car control and kind of get it out of your system
33:17 is probably the best way to put it.
33:18 But you also learn a lot of dynamic handling of what to do.
33:21 So I know they do emergency brake and steer in the wet,
33:24 which is something that a lot of people have to do in real life,
33:27 but don't really know what a car's going to do when they do it.
33:29 So it sort of ticks both boxes on the training front
33:31 and just that if you like cars and you have a BRZ,
33:34 go and do stupid stuff on the skid pan, don't do it on the public road.
33:38 It makes it so much easier
33:39 and gives people somewhere to enjoy this stuff in a safe environment.
33:43 Yeah, I think, yeah, I totally agree.
33:45 I think Isuzu has got like the four wheel drive stuff kind of handled over there.
33:48 So I don't really want to repeat it again.
33:50 But recently I have wanted to learn how to drift.
33:55 So I am going to go with Scully on this one after seeing the i30N.
34:00 Not going to release too many details.
34:03 Ionic 5N, sorry, not the i30N.
34:05 Yes. Yeah, exactly.
34:06 Sorry, that was a momentary lapse of...
34:08 Anyway. Yeah, so the Ionic 5N drift,
34:12 that's going to be my new bucket list thing to do is learn how to drift.
34:15 So I'm with Scully.
34:16 All right. Well, hopefully if you're watching, Mr Albanese,
34:19 you would love to see some Gaggle funding behind this.
34:21 100% of Australian survey.
34:23 Yes. I do have a quick question that's come in from YouTube.
34:26 I'm hoping you guys are able to help me out with this a little bit.
34:28 Twin Roaders on YouTube wanted to know,
34:30 how long do you keep your personal cars for?
34:32 As I get older, I'm holding on to my cars for longer.
34:35 Previously three to four years, but now over seven.
34:37 So has there been a shift in car ownership in Australia?
34:40 Scott, I'll throw it to you first.
34:42 That's a really good question, because I have owned cars for 12 months
34:45 all the way up to much longer than that.
34:47 And I know people in my family have very different approaches to it.
34:50 A lot of people, if they're leasing, turn their cars over every three or four years,
34:54 because that's a pretty standard lease period.
34:56 But if you like your car and given everything is getting more expensive,
35:00 as long as you're still comfortable that it's not going to cost you
35:03 too much maintenance wise or it's not missing safety features,
35:06 there's no reason why you can't keep it longer.
35:07 And with Kia now offering a seven year warranty, Mitsubishi up to ten
35:11 if you service in their network, it's easier and I suppose more reassuring
35:15 than ever to hang on to your car for longer.
35:17 Well, to a nervous, I hope that answers your question.
35:20 All right. Last thing for today, guys.
35:21 What are your top picks? Things you've seen this week?
35:24 Jade, we'll start with you. What do you got?
35:26 OK, so before I mentioned the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and got it right that time,
35:30 it was a time attack in Sydney a couple of days ago
35:34 and it was drifting around everywhere with the drift king in inverted commas.
35:40 One thing that I did find it was on a YouTube video I was watching
35:44 was the engine sounds again in inverted commas.
35:48 Yeah, the electric engine sounds. Yes.
35:51 It was actually really cool.
35:51 There was a supersonic sound.
35:54 If you haven't heard it, I definitely recommend go checking out.
35:57 It's like an F18 flying past.
35:59 So weird. Like it's very futuristic.
36:01 I listened to it first and I was like, nope, not a vibe.
36:05 And then I kept listening to it and I was like,
36:07 this is more than likely going to be the future of what these cars
36:10 are going to sound like.
36:11 So, yeah, I'd love to know what people think of the supersonic
36:14 sound from the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
36:18 Catchy. Scott, what's your pick for the week?
36:21 I've gone in-house for this one.
36:23 On Car Expert, we have a section called owner reviews
36:26 where you can fill out a form and write about your own car.
36:28 Obviously, it's really interesting with newer cars.
36:31 So people buying that same car can know what the experience is like.
36:34 But occasionally we get these really awesome owner reviews about classics.
36:37 And a regular commenter and reader has written a review of their Citroen DS.
36:42 Oh, OK. And it is beautifully written, for one.
36:45 It's a really, really good piece of writing.
36:46 Put some of the guys over there in the shade.
36:48 If they're listening, they're not. Damn.
36:51 But it also was a really interesting insight
36:54 into what it's like to own a very pretty, very technically
36:57 complex French car from before 2000.
37:00 Yeah, that's cool. I'm going to have to read that.
37:01 Yes, very, very complicated love story, that one.
37:04 I'd like to throw one out.
37:06 Also on World Time Attack Challenge in Sydney was the RP968 Porsche.
37:11 Now, if you haven't seen a World Time Attack car, we'll put up on screen.
37:15 But Google it.
37:16 They are phenomenal looking things.
37:18 Massive. They're all about speed and downforce.
37:20 No rules, basically.
37:21 Basically, it's just make a car as fast as possible. Pretty much.
37:24 So the previous record around the full city motorsport park circuit
37:27 for World Time Attack was a one minute nineteen point two seven.
37:29 To put it in perspective, a V8 supercar goes around in about a one
37:34 twenty nine and a half second.
37:36 That's a big difference.
37:38 The RP968 Porsche set a new record.
37:41 One minute seventeen point eight six zero.
37:45 That's a second and a half quicker than the old record.
37:47 That is a phenomenal time around that circuit.
37:49 I really, really encourage you to go and watch the onboard on YouTube
37:52 because it is an absolutely wild lap.
37:54 It's like the footage is on fast forward every time he puts his foot down.
37:57 It's crazy. Yeah, it's very, very cool.
37:59 So definitely check that out.
38:01 Guys, any final thoughts you want to leave us with this week?
38:03 No, I think what's coming out of Munich is everything is electric.
38:07 Well, most things are electric and that's kind of the future.
38:10 So if people
38:11 want to not have that, they might have to think again.
38:16 So that's going to be my takeaway this week.
38:19 My takeaway is Jade made a good point.
38:20 Jade made a good point.
38:21 So it doesn't happen often.
38:23 I think that's a good time to wrap it up.

38:36 So make sure you tune in for that one.
38:38 And also as a fun thing, Jade is going to be learning to drive manual.
38:42 And that's going to be our next week's episode of the podcast.
38:45 So you don't want to miss that.
38:47 So make sure you subscribe for that one.
38:49 And thank you for joining us this week, guys.
