We all love the X3 M - well, except your back. What if you really want a sporty SUV, but don't want to regret it every single time you hit a pot hole? Paul Maric thinks the 2022 BMW X3 M40i could be the solution to that problem.

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So are you after a luxury SUV,
00:03 but you want sportiness,
00:04 but you don't want bone jarringly firm ride?
00:08 Well, I think this is the answer for you.
00:10 It's the BMW X3 M40i.
00:13 So it sits down from, you know, the full fat X3 M model,
00:17 but still has a bit of sportiness to it.
00:20 Now this competes with things like the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43.
00:25 You've also got the Audi SQ5,
00:27 the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.
00:30 This is priced at around $120,000,
00:32 but if that's too expensive,
00:33 the entire X3 range kicks off at around that $75,000 mark.
00:37 Today, we're gonna do a detailed review of this car.
00:40 So if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of the review,
00:42 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:44 or if you're on YouTube,
00:45 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:47 And if you haven't done so already,
00:48 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon,
00:50 'cause that's gonna tell you
00:52 every single time we review good looking colors like this.
00:56 Okay, so let's talk exterior.
00:59 Actually, before I do that,
01:00 sorry about the rustling from my jacket.
01:02 It is bloody freezing out here today.
01:05 So six external colors,
01:06 all but white is gonna set you back an extra $2,000.
01:11 Expensive colors.
01:12 Okay, let's talk about the design.
01:14 So X3, it's fairly inoffensive.
01:16 And when I say inoffensive,
01:18 I mean, it doesn't look like some of the stuff
01:21 that BMW has created recently,
01:23 like the i7, the iX.
01:26 This keeps that sort of traditional kidney grill
01:29 and I don't know,
01:30 I think dials back the styling just a little bit,
01:32 but I still think it looks really good.
01:34 So little M badge there signifying
01:36 this has been fettered by the M department.
01:40 Piano black down here,
01:41 some little cooling vents on the side there.
01:44 These come with not only LED headlights,
01:47 but BMW laser lights.
01:49 Now, if you wanna see how this technology
01:51 compares to other headlight technology,
01:54 we actually shot a headlight comparison a while back
01:56 where we looked at laser lights.
01:57 You can click up here to watch that
01:59 and get a better idea of how that works.
02:00 So around the side here,
02:02 you've got a set of Whopper 21 inch alloy wheels.
02:06 And behind those alloy wheels,
02:07 you have four piston calipers on that rotor.
02:10 So pretty big, meaty brake setup.
02:12 And you can tell the M40i aside from others
02:14 with this blue caliper setup here.
02:17 You can also get red calipers as an option as well
02:21 if you don't like that blue setup.
02:23 But yeah, 21 inch alloy wheels
02:24 on a fairly low profile tire.
02:26 I suspect this is going to be firm.
02:28 These are kind of firm to start with.
02:30 So just looking at this, it kind of gives me chills.
02:33 No sort of big wheel arch cladding over here,
02:35 just this body colored setup.
02:37 Another M badge over here, fake vent in there.
02:39 And then this random thing down the side,
02:42 sort of doesn't really go anywhere.
02:43 So I don't know what that does,
02:44 but it's on both sides of the car.
02:46 Up the top here,
02:47 you've got some piano black on that wing mirror,
02:50 an indicator built into there,
02:51 and then a camera as well.
02:53 I love this design.
02:53 So this is kind of traditional M car design
02:56 where it doesn't quite attach to the car up the top here
02:58 for a bit of aero.
02:59 I think it's a cool look and yeah,
03:02 kind of tells everyone that you're driving
03:03 the sporty version of your X3.
03:06 You've got a moonroof on this car with black roof rails
03:09 and then whip around to the rear.
03:10 You'll find your M40i badge.
03:13 You've got a set of full LED taillights.
03:15 These look great at night with that frosted LED design.
03:18 Some more fake vents there.
03:20 Dual exhaust pipes,
03:21 and then an X3 badge over here.
03:24 Shark fin aerial up the top there as well.
03:26 So let me know what you think about the design.
03:28 I think it actually still looks really good
03:30 despite this car being out now for a little while.
03:33 I am a little bit concerned
03:33 that when we get to the next generation of this car,
03:35 that is gonna go down the path of other BMW products
03:39 in terms of styling.
03:39 But yeah, let me know what you think about the style
03:41 and the design down in the comment section below.
03:44 We're inside the X3.
03:45 Let's start off with the keys.
03:47 So you've got unlock, lock, boot,
03:50 and then a button there to turn the lights on outside.
03:52 You have the M colors there on the outside
03:55 and then blank on the back
03:56 with a little bit of brushed aluminum.
03:58 It's a proximity sensing key,
03:59 so that just stays in your pocket.
04:01 Once you're inside, you hit the push button,
04:02 start, and away you go.
04:04 Look, I quite like the way this is presented.
04:06 I still think it looks quite modern.
04:08 They've got the big infotainment system at the top there,
04:10 screen ahead of the driver,
04:11 and then they break up all the black
04:13 with these different design elements,
04:15 a little bit of brushed aluminum as well.
04:17 I think there's also an option that you can get
04:19 to make the buttons on the steering wheel
04:21 brushed aluminum, and I would probably do that.
04:23 I think it looks a little classier
04:24 than the plastic setup that's currently on this car.
04:29 What about your touch points?
04:31 So center there is firm, firm on the door.
04:35 How firm are those touch points?
04:37 Well, we've tested them with our durometer.
04:39 If you want to see how this car compares to others
04:41 that we've tested before,
04:42 have a look at the link in the description.
04:44 Now, what about your build quality?
04:47 That all feels very nice and tough,
04:50 and the door test.
04:52 Sounds good.
04:56 Let's talk infotainment.
04:57 So BMW is really strong in the infotainment game,
05:00 and this is no exception.
05:02 A little bit over 12 inches in size,
05:04 touchscreen, but can also be driven by iDrive down here.
05:08 I like this, but it's not quite as sharp
05:10 as the infotainment system we've seen in the new BMW iX,
05:13 so that is the next generation of BMW's iDrive system.
05:16 It's still okay, but I just think
05:18 it got a little bit clunky over time.
05:20 They have fixed that now,
05:21 but this is what you get here in the X3.
05:24 So that means in-built satellite navigation.
05:27 It's all pretty quick and sharp.
05:30 Then in addition to that,
05:31 you have AM/FM/DAB digital radio,
05:34 and that is plumbed through a 16-speaker
05:37 Harman Kardon sound system.
05:38 Very impressive.
05:40 This is pretty good 'cause it gives you
05:41 a whole lot more functionality
05:42 than just the infotainment system.
05:44 You've got things like Compass,
05:46 you've got Calendar, News Service
05:48 that feeds from data outside,
05:50 the temperature outside, bloody freezing.
05:53 So yeah, it's a pretty impressive setup.
05:54 In terms of smart phone mirroring,
05:55 both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless.
05:59 I'll show you what Android Auto looks like to start with.
06:01 So full-screen integration there, nice and quick,
06:04 and then you can see here it moves your maps
06:07 over to the left-hand side, and that's not in use,
06:10 so pretty cool setup there.
06:12 And this is what Apple CarPlay looks like.
06:13 So again, full-screen, tiny bit laggy actually.
06:18 Yeah, look at that, it's sort of a little delayed there
06:20 in terms of the response, but that's fine.
06:23 For the most part, that's not too bad.
06:24 The other thing I'll point out as well here
06:26 is that you have the ability to install applications
06:30 within the car as well.
06:31 So this is all the stuff that's installed there
06:32 at the moment, but you have kind of like an app store
06:36 that you can actually install apps through.
06:39 So that means you can add features to the car
06:40 such as the dash camera system that they've implemented.
06:44 So it's a pretty impressive setup,
06:46 and I like where cars are heading in this direction.
06:48 You can buy the features that you want.
06:49 If you don't want them, you don't need to have them.
06:51 There is also a screen ahead of the driver.
06:53 I'm gonna have to turn the car on
06:54 so you can have a look at that,
06:56 but yeah, you can see there it's pretty straightforward.
06:58 You've got your speed on the left, tacho on the right,
07:00 and then you can go through different items here
07:02 on the right-hand side, depending on what you wanna do.
07:05 So you get a little G meter and then trip computer
07:07 and other sort of bits and pieces.
07:08 So it is simple and pretty straightforward to use.
07:11 Now, moving on to safety, I'll switch the car off.
07:14 You get autonomous emergency braking
07:16 with pedestrian detection.
07:18 You have this auto-dimming rear vision mirror,
07:20 radar cruise control.
07:22 You have a lane departure warning
07:23 and a lane keeping assistant.
07:24 A blind spot monitor built into those wing mirrors.
07:27 You also have like an autonomous steering function.
07:31 It works okay, not amazing.
07:32 Most of the systems in these cars
07:35 just tend to do the basic job,
07:37 but they get very confused when you enter a roadwork zone
07:40 or lines disappear or come into play.
07:42 So that is one of the downsides of that system.
07:44 Rear cross traffic alert, front cross traffic alert AU.
07:48 You also have front and rear parking sensors
07:50 and then a 360 camera with semi-autonomous parking.
07:53 I'll show you what the 360 camera looks like.
07:55 So vision is pretty good there.
07:58 That's a high resolution shot.
08:00 Out the front there, you also have a reversing assistant.
08:02 Oh, by the way, if you don't know
08:04 what the reversing assistant is,
08:05 click up here to watch a video that we shot
08:07 explaining how parking sensors work,
08:09 but also where we demonstrate that
08:10 over a 50 meter road loop.
08:12 So have a look at that.
08:14 I'll go to the back view here.
08:16 There you go, there's our suitcase.
08:18 You can clearly read what it says there.
08:19 So yeah, really impressive parking system here
08:22 and very high quality cameras as well.
08:24 Now let's talk about practicality.
08:26 We'll start off with your connectivity.
08:27 So you've got a USB-A port just here,
08:29 a 12 volt outlet just there.
08:31 In the glove box or the center console rather,
08:34 you have a USB-C port.
08:36 Where are you gonna put your phone?
08:37 Well, I was hoping there'd be a wireless phone charger here,
08:40 but there isn't.
08:41 So your phone just kind of lives wherever,
08:42 but you're not gonna be charging it,
08:43 which is a little bit disappointing
08:45 because when you are using wireless smartphone mirroring,
08:47 it tends to use a little bit more battery.
08:49 So there is no easy way to charge it on the fly.
08:52 You're gonna have to wait until you get home.
08:54 And what about your coffee?
08:55 So coffee fits in there without any problems.
08:58 You won't be de-lidding that accidentally.
09:01 Same with your bottles.
09:02 So that goes in without any dramas.
09:03 You've also got teeth in there to hold it in place.
09:06 Bottle fits inside the door.
09:08 That is an enormous door bin.
09:10 Let me try the big bottle.
09:11 That is huge.
09:13 That's awesome.
09:14 I love that.
09:15 Just next to the driver's knee,
09:16 you also have another storage bin for odds and ends
09:18 and keys and that type of stuff.
09:20 Center console here, decent size and glove box.
09:24 Let's have a look at that.
09:25 That's not too bad either.
09:26 Moving right along to comfort,
09:27 you have dual zone automatic climate control,
09:30 seat heating for the front row.
09:33 On the seats, pretty sort of basic looking.
09:35 I thought they might be a little sportier,
09:37 but you know, they're fine for what they are.
09:38 They've got decent bolsters here up the front.
09:41 It's nicely presented.
09:43 Electrically adjustable for both the driver
09:44 and front passenger.
09:45 So you can go forwards, backwards.
09:48 The backrest can go forwards, backwards.
09:50 You can lift the base of the seat.
09:52 You also have a lumbar adjustment.
09:55 You can also adjust your side bolsters.
09:57 You can move this front section in and out.
09:59 And then the driver's side also has seat memory.
10:02 And then your steering offers both tilts
10:05 and reach adjustment.
10:07 And on our reach test,
10:08 all of this stuff is easy to reach while driving.
10:11 So second row of the X3,
10:12 knee room is reasonable,
10:14 toe room's great,
10:15 and headroom is really good.
10:17 And that's despite having this big old
10:19 moonroof there as well.
10:21 You've got mat pockets in the back of the seats.
10:23 You have a third zone of climate control,
10:25 two USB-C ports,
10:26 a hidey hole for bits and pieces.
10:29 You've got ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats,
10:31 and then three top tether points.
10:34 Center armrest here with a little fold out doodad.
10:38 Our bottle fits in there without any dramas
10:40 with those rubber teeth.
10:42 And then inside the door,
10:43 you've got plenty of bottle storage as well.
10:46 I will point out with these seats,
10:48 look at this, it's like an ironing board.
10:50 It is just dead flat.
10:52 Problem with that is,
10:53 when you go for a bit of a fang,
10:54 like we did this morning,
10:56 when the video guys were in the back here,
10:57 they were kind of sliding all over the place.
10:59 There's just no support.
11:01 So, a little disappointing here
11:02 that in the sports version,
11:03 you don't actually get any bolstering
11:05 to keep your second row passengers in place.
11:08 Finally, the window.
11:10 Let's see what it does.
11:11 So it's auto down and auto up.
11:13 Oh, Bob's your uncle goes all the way down.
11:16 Very impressive.
11:18 Let's talk cargo space.
11:20 So you have 550 litres available.
11:23 Power tailgate in this setup here.
11:26 I like the fact that you have these little doodads
11:28 that allow you to slide up and down
11:30 and then adjust your tether points as you go.
11:32 You have net off to the side here
11:35 and then behind these panels,
11:36 you've got little hidey holes
11:38 plus a spot there for your first aid kit.
11:40 Beneath the cargo floor,
11:42 you're not gonna find a spare tyre
11:43 'cause these are run flats,
11:44 but you do have a little bit of extra storage there
11:46 'cause you don't have a spare tyre to contend with.
11:49 Show you what it looks like with our bags in there.
11:51 There you go.
11:56 So plenty of room in there
11:57 and lots of load height as well
11:59 with a really good load floor height too.
12:03 Now you can expand the space a little bit more
12:05 by dropping your second row.
12:07 Once that is out of the way,
12:09 it increases space to 1600 litres
12:12 with a fairly flat floor as well.
12:13 So it is a really good storage space.
12:15 We've just hit the road in the X3 M40i.
12:22 I love this engine.
12:24 It's a three litre turbocharged inline six cylinder petrol.
12:29 I had a similar engine in my Supra
12:32 and I just loved everything about it.
12:34 Just really smooth, it had a strong torque band
12:37 and just a beautiful, beautiful engine to drive with.
12:40 In this configuration,
12:41 it produces 285 kilowatts of power
12:44 and 500 newton metres of torque.
12:46 It may not sound like much,
12:47 but it's just the way that it delivers all of that.
12:49 If I lean on the throttle now,
12:51 it doesn't even need to kick back a gear,
12:53 but it starts pushing me in the back
12:55 and really just accelerating nice and smoothly.
12:58 And then when you do give it a boot,
12:59 pins you back in the seat
13:02 and delivers that really, really smooth engine note.
13:05 And that's all mated to an eight speed
13:07 automatic transmission.
13:08 Now it's not a dual clutch transmission,
13:10 it is just a regular standard torque converter.
13:13 And that's what I love about it
13:14 because when you are taking off from a standing start,
13:17 you are just getting smoothness.
13:19 And I know I keep using that word,
13:21 but it mates beautifully with this engine.
13:22 When you mate this engine to a dual clutch,
13:25 just tends to be a little bit jerky.
13:26 This on the other hand is just great
13:28 in terms of the way that it accelerates
13:30 and it is just absolutely fuss free.
13:32 Now, BMW claims a combined fuel economy
13:35 of just under nine litres per 100 Ks.
13:37 Let's have a look at what we're sitting on.
13:40 Okay, we're on 11.6 at the moment.
13:44 It's actually, I thought it was going to be
13:45 far worse than that because this morning
13:47 I was fanging around here
13:48 and having just a little bit of fun
13:49 and I thought I should stop doing that
13:51 before we film because the fuel economy
13:53 is going to be crazy.
13:54 But yes, it has crept up a little bit there,
13:56 but look, I'm perfectly fine with that.
13:58 Given this is a family SUV,
14:00 it is the type of vehicle you really
14:02 going to be using day to day as a family vehicle,
14:04 but also the type of vehicle every now and then
14:06 you want to be able to have a stab in
14:07 and put a big smile on your face.
14:09 Just one more thing I'll point out on the fuel economy,
14:12 it requires 95 Ron premium unleaded fuel.
14:15 Now what's road noise like?
14:17 Look, there is a fair bit coming into the cabin
14:20 on this course chip surface.
14:22 Unfortunately, with big wheels like that,
14:24 you are going to get a little bit
14:25 translating into the cabin.
14:26 It's not the end of the world
14:27 and it's certainly not as bad as the full fat X3M,
14:30 but it is something worth keeping in mind.
14:32 There is also a little bit of wind noise
14:33 that's coming in and I don't know whether
14:35 that's because of those fancy mirrors or not,
14:37 but it is pretty windy today
14:38 and I am noticing a fair bit of it here behind the wheel.
14:41 Now what's the ride like?
14:42 Let's bump this up to 130 for our sine waves.
14:46 This has adaptive damping
14:49 and we are currently in the comfort mode.
14:51 So this should be the softest setting
14:54 that is available to us as all that wind noise picks up.
14:56 Yeah, look, this is actually really impressive.
15:00 Yeah, that sits really dead flat over the sine waves.
15:03 Now the reason for that is that
15:05 because with this adaptive damping setup,
15:07 the ride is very firm
15:09 as we go over these little corrugations here
15:12 on our right and handling loop.
15:14 Yeah, look, the ride is pretty firm.
15:16 You're gonna notice it in and around town
15:17 when you're hitting speed humps, potholes,
15:19 that kind of thing.
15:20 It's really going to be quite abrupt.
15:21 I just don't understand why they do that.
15:23 When it has a comfort mode
15:25 and you want it to be comfortable,
15:26 I don't know why they don't just round it out.
15:28 As a result of that, it's firm in comfort mode
15:30 and then just gets firmer the harder you go
15:32 in terms of your drive modes.
15:34 Now speaking of your drive modes,
15:36 you have comfort, Eco Pro, sport,
15:39 and then in the sport mode,
15:41 you also have standard, plus, and individual.
15:44 So let's pop it onto sport and put it into plus.
15:47 Oh my God, it gets firm.
15:48 Go for a stab here around our track
15:51 and see what it feels like.
15:52 I love that the gearbox is already in its sport mode.
15:56 We'll plow it through our corner here.
15:58 Yeah, that feels so good.
16:05 Far out.
16:07 This is bloody impressive.
16:09 It just pushes onto its side and it kind of just...
16:16 It's actually really playful.
16:17 You can predict what it's going to do
16:20 and it doesn't feel like it's going to spit you out
16:23 at any point.
16:24 There's stacks of communication through the steering wheel.
16:27 The way that it piles on speed is impressive.
16:30 These tyres aren't super grippy,
16:32 so it can understeer a little bit here
16:34 on our right-hand handling track.
16:36 The surface isn't super grippy,
16:38 but I do find with some of these tyres,
16:40 if they don't have a sticky compound,
16:44 it tends to just cause a tiny bit of understeer.
16:46 But look, this is damn impressive.
16:48 It is just piling on speed
16:50 as we roll onto the back straight here.
16:52 Give the throttle a stab.
16:54 It is absolutely moving.
16:59 Man, that is impressive.
17:01 I'm going to slow that down.
17:02 Wow.
17:04 This is a family SUV and it is absolutely hauling ass.
17:08 And it is making a awesome sound while it's doing it.
17:11 Certainly from inside the cabin here, it sounds fantastic.
17:14 I don't know what it sounds like on the outside.
17:16 (car engine roaring)
17:19 Yeah, that sounds bloody good.
17:26 That Sport mode is really good.
17:28 It's basically just tailoring
17:29 all of the gearbox shift points.
17:32 It's doing everything I want it to do
17:33 to give me torque when I need it.
17:35 It's not lazy.
17:36 It is just very well-tuned.
17:38 The ride is firm in Sport mode,
17:40 but if you're going to attack the track
17:42 or something like that,
17:42 it is the perfect setting for getting the most out of it.
17:45 The brakes are good as well.
17:46 You can really lean on that pedal
17:48 and it pulls it up nicely.
17:50 So plenty of communication
17:51 through the brake pedal there as well.
17:53 So yeah, really impressed with this.
17:56 Now, BMW claims a zero to 100 time of 4.8 seconds.
18:02 This is how it went up against our stopwatch.
18:04 (car engine roaring)
18:08 (car engine roaring)
18:11 Righto, let's pop this back into comfort mode.
18:18 What is our visibility like?
18:20 So, look, it's great down the front there.
18:21 I can clearly see that end of the car.
18:24 Out the back, it's not too bad.
18:26 The envelope is just a tiny bit narrow.
18:28 The wing mirrors, they're just really small.
18:30 I know they've got that whole M thing on them,
18:32 but the mirrors themselves are quite small.
18:34 You know, they're okay.
18:36 I just wish they could be a little bit bigger,
18:37 but you do have a blind spot monitor built into those.
18:41 And with parking, I mean, you've got all the parking sensors
18:43 and cameras and stuff to make city driving
18:45 pretty straightforward.
18:46 (car engine roaring)
18:49 In terms of that low speed driving,
18:50 the steering is light in comfort mode.
18:52 It's a variable ratio steering rack as well.
18:54 So that means in comfort, you're putting in less effort
18:56 to achieve the same thing that you're going to achieve
18:59 at higher speeds.
19:00 It has turning circle of 12 metres,
19:02 which is fine for a vehicle this size.
19:04 And it is worth pointing out as well
19:06 that it has a ground clearance
19:06 of just over 200 millimetres as well.
19:08 I forgot to mention earlier as well in the sport mode,
19:11 this has an electronic diff lock at the rear.
19:14 So when you are tipping it into a corner,
19:16 it's able to variably lock that rear axle
19:18 to give you maximum traction out of a corner.
19:21 And then if you do switch everything off
19:23 and want to be a bit of a hooligan,
19:24 it will then give you that effect
19:26 of a limited slip differential at the rear.
19:28 (car engine roaring)
19:31 So the X3 M40i,
19:35 this solidifies my love for that three litre BMW 6.
19:38 It is such a smooth engine.
19:40 It's kind of like an SUV version of the super.
19:43 It really has all of those same attributes.
19:45 It is let down by the ride though.
19:47 It is going to be so firm
19:49 if you're spending a lot of time in and around the city,
19:50 and there's no easy way to fix it.
19:52 Even comfort mode is too firm for in and around the city.
19:55 So you have to find perhaps smaller wheels
19:57 or a chubbier profile tyre to get around that.
19:59 But if you're not too fussed by that,
20:01 it has stacks of technology.
20:02 There's loads of room inside
20:04 and it's a good looking car as well.
20:06 And it has the straight six that you and I both love.
20:09 Now, do you own one of these
20:11 or have you bought a GLC or perhaps the SQ5 instead?
20:14 What tempted you to this or perhaps away from this?
