I was a big fan of the BMW iX - it didn't really drive like a BMW, but it struck the right chords for being a luxury EV. But...what if you don't want a space age looking EV? The 2022 BMW iX3 aims to split the balance between a vehicle that looks just like the BMW X3, but also has the latest EV components under the skin. Paul Maric checks it out to see if it's any good.

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So it seems like every week there's a new EV rolling out
00:04 from a manufacturer, and this is the latest one.
00:07 It is the BMW iX3.
00:10 Well, when I say latest, latest to Australia,
00:12 because this has been out for a little while overseas,
00:14 but we finally get the facelifted version here in Australia.
00:18 Now this competes with things like the Mercedes-Benz EQC,
00:22 the Jaguar I-PACE, the Audi e-tron,
00:25 and this is priced from just under $115,000,
00:29 and it's only available in one specification.
00:31 Now the price is pretty sharp
00:32 when you look at the rest of the competitors,
00:33 which are all much more expensive,
00:35 but admittedly, most of those offer
00:37 all-wheel drive as well.
00:39 Today we're going to do a detailed review of this car,
00:41 so if you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of the review,
00:43 you can use those time codes on the screen,
00:45 or if you're on YouTube,
00:46 scroll down and use the chapters below,
00:48 and if you haven't done so already,
00:49 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon.
00:51 That's gonna tell you every single time
00:53 we drive a car with blue highlights.
00:55 Now let's talk exterior design.
00:57 We've got six external colors to pick from,
01:00 and thankfully, they're all free.
01:02 Also thankfully, all of the blue highlights
01:04 are a no-cost option, so you don't need everyone
01:07 to know that you're driving an EV if you don't want to,
01:10 so that's good news, I reckon.
01:11 Now, what about the design?
01:12 Well, this looks very much like an X3,
01:15 and I think that's probably one of the best things
01:16 about this, because I think the iX,
01:18 which we just reviewed recently,
01:20 you can watch our review of that by clicking up here,
01:22 it was probably just a little out there in terms of design,
01:25 whereas this, I think, is still a very smart-looking design.
01:27 The latest facelift to this brings with it
01:29 just a bit of a nip and tuck in terms of the way
01:31 that it appears out on the road,
01:33 so you do get this front section
01:35 that looks a little bit different to the regular X3,
01:37 because behind here, you've got a set of louvers
01:38 that open and close for cooling,
01:40 and that means that when the car
01:41 doesn't need that additional cooling,
01:43 they just crack open, and when it doesn't, they close up.
01:45 The interesting thing here, under the bonnet,
01:47 in the iX, the bonnet doesn't open.
01:49 Here it does open, but it's got
01:50 this giant plastic cover on it,
01:52 and there's room under the cover,
01:53 so I don't know why they didn't install storage there,
01:55 so it is kind of a weird one.
01:57 Down at the bottom here, you've got a radar
01:59 and then a couple of slats there for redirecting air.
02:02 More of that blue highlight down the side there.
02:04 Sort of full LED headlights.
02:06 They're matrix LED as well, really good at nighttime,
02:09 give you excellent vision down the road.
02:11 Around the side here, we have a set of 20-inch alloy wheels.
02:14 For Australia, the iX3 comes with the M Sport package,
02:17 so you'll see the M badge here and here,
02:18 and also a very cool-looking aero wheel,
02:21 so this is designed to reduce the amount of drag
02:24 that the alloy wheel surface creates
02:26 when it is just powering down the roads.
02:28 Now, you're thinking of off-roading?
02:29 Well, get that idea out of your head.
02:30 It has a 179-millimeter ground clearance,
02:33 which is kind of okay,
02:34 but it is just rear-wheel drive here in Australia.
02:37 Also, made in China, which is where they build
02:39 the Tesla Model 3 for the Australian market.
02:42 You've got a set of Vaux vents just tucked into there,
02:45 indicator built into that wing mirror
02:46 with a little camera there for the 360 camera,
02:48 privacy glass.
02:50 Around the back here, you've got these giant blue scoops,
02:52 which is where the exhaust used to be,
02:54 LED taillights.
02:56 These look really nice and smart,
02:57 and I love that frosted finish on those as well.
03:01 Another set of those fake vents,
03:02 and then iX3 badging just here
03:05 with a shark fin aerial up the top.
03:08 Now, what do you think about the design?
03:09 Do you think that it's good that it looks just like an X3,
03:11 or do you think it needed a futuristic new design
03:14 to match its EV presence?
03:16 Let me know down there.
03:17 So we're in the iX3.
03:18 We'll start off with the keys.
03:19 So you've got unlock, lock, boot,
03:23 the roundel that you can configure.
03:25 A little bit of metal trim around the outside there,
03:27 and then blank on the back.
03:29 Now, this is a proximity sensing key,
03:31 so you can just grab the door handle,
03:33 and then once you're inside,
03:34 you press the very blue start button to kick things over.
03:37 Now, the interesting thing with this car
03:38 is BMW was boasting about the sound
03:41 being sort of orchestrated by Hans Zimmer.
03:44 So there's a little bit of cool stuff to know about the car.
03:48 In terms of the design, though,
03:51 it looks very much like an X3,
03:52 and that is a really good thing in my opinion,
03:54 because I think the X3 is beautifully presented inside.
03:57 You can see there's materials
03:58 they've used along the dash there,
03:59 the big infotainment screen up the top there.
04:02 There is a fair bit of piano black around here,
04:04 which is a little unfortunate,
04:06 but for the most part,
04:07 I do like the way that they've shown it here.
04:09 And this car really doesn't have that many options,
04:11 so when you do buy it from BMW,
04:12 it comes fully loaded with virtually
04:14 every single thing that you need.
04:15 So it is a pretty sort of impressive setup as standard.
04:19 Now, what about your touch points?
04:20 So that is firm-ish,
04:22 and then on the door, it's firm-ish as well.
04:24 How firm are they?
04:25 Well, we've got our durometer,
04:26 we've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
04:29 If you wanna see how this car compares
04:30 to others that we've tested before,
04:31 have a look at the link in the description.
04:33 Build quality.
04:34 So I mentioned earlier, this is made in China.
04:37 A lot of our other BMWs that come to Australia
04:39 are made in South Africa, the US, or Germany,
04:42 and this feels built like a tank, all nice and solid.
04:46 What about our door?
04:50 That sounds really nice and solid.
04:51 Now, infotainment.
04:52 So it's driven by this big screen up the top here.
04:55 It's a 12.3-inch display.
04:57 This still runs OS 7,
04:59 so we recently reviewed OS 8 in the new BMW iX,
05:02 so this is the previous generation of iDrive.
05:05 In my opinion, OS 8 is a huge step forward
05:08 compared to this version here,
05:10 but this is what you've got to work with here in the iX3,
05:13 so we'll have a quick look at that.
05:14 You have shortcut buttons down the side there.
05:16 It's all driven down here by the iDrive controller,
05:18 which also has shortcut buttons,
05:20 and then finally, you have configurable controls
05:22 down the bottom that, as you hover over them,
05:25 they do different functions,
05:26 and then when you push them in, it goes to that function.
05:29 It's also capable of doing gesture controls.
05:32 You can do stuff like that,
05:35 but as you can see, it sometimes doesn't work,
05:38 and I think it is such a pointless feature,
05:40 but anyway, it does it, and it is there.
05:42 It also acts as a touchscreen as well,
05:43 so you can just press this
05:45 to start moving between those menus,
05:47 and then you can, of course, configure all of the cards
05:49 here on the main screen to do whatever you want them to do.
05:51 On the radio front, you have AM, FM, DAB plus digital radio.
05:55 This car comes standard with a 16-speaker
05:58 Harman Kardon sound system.
06:01 Excellent sound system, very nice quality,
06:03 and it's cool to see that this comes with
06:04 literally the bee's knees of sound systems
06:06 as standard fitment.
06:08 Then on your smartphone mirroring,
06:09 you have both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
06:13 Apple CarPlay is wireless.
06:15 Look at this, that is very quick, very sharp,
06:18 and takes up that entire screen,
06:20 which I think is really impressive,
06:22 and this is what Android Auto looks like.
06:24 Android Auto is also wireless,
06:26 and then it is nice and fast.
06:28 Have a look at that, very, very impressive.
06:30 This, of course, also has satellite navigation
06:33 built into the native infotainment system,
06:36 and also voice recognition,
06:37 which you activate here on the steering wheel.
06:38 Ahead of the driver is another big display,
06:41 and also a head-up display.
06:43 Now, with this display here,
06:44 you can change through all of your menu items
06:46 on the right-hand side using this little button.
06:48 It'll take you through trip computer, audio,
06:50 and all that kind of thing.
06:52 It's a pretty basic setup.
06:53 It's not quite as advanced as something like the BMW iX,
06:57 and then when you switch through drive modes,
06:59 you can see how the screen changes there,
07:01 depending on which drive mode you choose,
07:03 and then with the head-up display,
07:04 all of your functions are controlled here,
07:06 so you can easily select different radio stations
07:08 just by sliding up and down,
07:10 and then clicking on the station that you're after.
07:12 Now, moving on to safety technology.
07:14 So you have autonomous emergency braking
07:16 that works both forwards and reverse.
07:18 You have rear cross-traffic alert
07:20 and auto-dimming rear vision mirror,
07:21 radar cruise control.
07:23 You have a blind spot monitor built into the wing mirror.
07:26 You've got lane departure warning
07:27 and a lane-keeping assistant,
07:29 along with a semi-autonomous steering function.
07:31 Works okay, nothing amazing.
07:32 And then on the parking front,
07:33 you have both front and rear parking sensors
07:35 and a 360 camera.
07:37 I'll show you what that looks like.
07:38 There it is there.
07:39 So that's your view out the back,
07:40 and then you have the top-down view.
07:41 You can then select different angles there,
07:43 depending on what you wanna look at.
07:45 It's okay, it's not amazing.
07:46 You can see it a little bit blurry there
07:47 when you try and actually get a better view.
07:49 I do love this feature, though.
07:50 The reverse assistant remembers
07:52 your last 50 metres of reverse travel.
07:55 And what it's able to do
07:56 is navigate that route on your behalf.
07:58 So if you do get stuck in a narrow, one-way street,
08:00 it will get you out of there.
08:01 We actually shot a video explaining how that works
08:04 and demonstrating it.
08:04 You can watch it by clicking up here.
08:06 But on the parking front,
08:07 it's a pretty straightforward setup.
08:10 Righto, let's chat about practicality.
08:12 And we'll start off with your connectivity.
08:14 So you have one USB-A port down here,
08:17 and then in the centre console, you have a USB-C port.
08:21 There is also a 12-volt outlet hidden just in there.
08:24 In terms of your phone, where's it gonna live?
08:26 Well, you've got wireless phone charging down there,
08:28 so you can whack the phone down there if you want to.
08:30 Phone can kinda squeeze into your cup holder as well
08:33 a little bit.
08:34 Speaking of cup holder, coffee, does it fit my coffee?
08:37 Yes, it does.
08:38 It fits my little baby coffee,
08:39 and the lid does not come off as verified this morning.
08:41 I didn't spill a drop.
08:43 It's got teeth on the side there as well,
08:44 so that will hold our bottle in without any dramas.
08:47 This can fit inside the door too.
08:49 Let's try our big bottle.
08:51 Look at that, that is a big old door bin.
08:55 Very impressive.
08:56 Other storage, you've got your centre console here,
08:58 reasonably sized, nothing sort of too crazy.
09:01 And then you have a glove box as well.
09:04 And your comfort.
09:05 So you have dual-zone automatic climate control.
09:07 You have heated seats for the front row.
09:11 On seating comfort.
09:12 So the seats actually look pretty cool.
09:14 I quite like this design.
09:15 You've got the blue stitching inside,
09:16 stitching across the centre there,
09:18 and they're quite sort of huggy
09:19 in terms of the way that they're set up.
09:21 In terms of seat adjustment,
09:22 both the driver and front passenger
09:24 have electric seat adjustments,
09:25 so the seat goes forwards and backwards.
09:27 The base lifts up and it goes down,
09:29 and so does the entire seat.
09:30 You have electric adjustment for your bolsters
09:33 to hug you in.
09:34 You have a manually extendable front section,
09:37 and then memory for the driver's seat.
09:40 In terms of the steering wheel,
09:41 it's manually adjustable,
09:42 offers both tilt and reach adjustment.
09:44 And then on our reach test,
09:45 all of this stuff is easy to reach while you're driving.
09:48 So second row of the iX3.
09:50 Look, knee room is reasonably good.
09:53 Toe room is good.
09:54 Headroom is excellent.
09:56 Love this panoramic roof.
09:57 So it's a sunroof as well.
09:59 Looks really nice.
10:00 And plenty of vision out of that.
10:02 What about your other creature comforts?
10:03 Well, you've got these little nets
10:04 in the back of the seats to hold your documents in,
10:06 or whatever you wanna carry.
10:08 You've got a third zone of climate control down here,
10:11 two USB-C ports, air vents.
10:13 Then in addition to that,
10:14 you have a center armrest here.
10:17 When that rolls out, you got two cup holders.
10:19 So I'll show you how that works.
10:21 Bang, one goes in there,
10:22 and then one goes in there as well.
10:24 And then in addition to that,
10:25 you have a little hidey hole just there.
10:28 Your bottle will also comfortably fit inside the door.
10:31 This also comes down as well.
10:33 So if you do need access to the boot,
10:35 it's a clever little setup.
10:37 And in addition to that,
10:38 you have ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats,
10:40 and then top tether points as well.
10:42 So really nice place to be seated.
10:44 And like I said before,
10:45 it just feels like any other X3,
10:47 which is one of the big advantages.
10:49 Downside though, is that you still have this driveline hump.
10:52 It doesn't need that because it is electric.
10:55 But anyway.
10:56 And finally, our window test.
10:59 See if it goes all the way down.
11:01 Oh, Bob's your uncle.
11:02 Look at that.
11:03 Very impressive.
11:04 Now let's talk cargo space.
11:06 So you've got a power tailgate.
11:08 Once that gets out of the way,
11:10 you are exposed to a little over 500 litres of cargo space.
11:14 Beneath the cargo floor,
11:14 you have storage for your cables,
11:16 and then a little storage nook
11:18 just a little further in there as well.
11:20 There is no spare tyre here.
11:22 Over to the sides,
11:23 you have a little bit of extra storage
11:25 with netting on this side.
11:26 And then in addition to that,
11:27 you have hooks down the bottom here,
11:29 and also at the front of those seats.
11:31 12-volt outlet, and then a hook off to the side as well.
11:34 Show you what it looks like with our bags in there.
11:36 Now, our suitcase.
11:38 I don't know where it is.
11:40 It has been stolen, lost, something.
11:43 So this is going to be our replacement for the moment
11:45 until we get a new one.
11:46 It is around the size of a carry-on bag on the plane.
11:49 So that gives you an idea of how much room you have.
11:51 Not a bad size boot there in terms of the available space.
11:55 What you can do to increase the space
11:57 just a little bit more is drop your second row,
12:00 and that cranks it up to a little over 1500 litres
12:03 of cargo space.
12:04 Now let's talk charging.
12:06 So it has an 80 kilowatt hour battery,
12:08 usable is around the 72 kilowatt hour mark.
12:11 You have both AC and DC charging.
12:13 On the AC front, it'll do three phase charging
12:16 at up to 11 kilowatts, which is pretty good.
12:18 And then on the DC front,
12:19 it will charge it up to 150 kilowatts.
12:22 Now I mentioned this in our review of the BMW iX,
12:25 that I just don't understand why Tesla,
12:28 like the Model 3 Long Range,
12:29 can do 250 kilowatts of charging,
12:31 yet here they're limited to 150.
12:33 So, and then in the iX, it was like 190 or 195.
12:36 So I don't know, given there is faster technology out there,
12:39 I don't know why we can't just do faster charging.
12:41 But anyway, that's what you have for charging your iX3.
12:45 So we've hit the road in the iX3.
12:49 Now I did mention earlier,
12:50 this is just a single motor setup,
12:53 and because BMW, it is a single motor
12:56 attached to the rear axle.
12:57 So this is a rear wheel drive electric car,
12:59 which I think is kind of cool
13:01 because you're getting the funness of a rear wheel drive
13:04 in a BMW X3 package.
13:07 So that means it produces 210 kilowatts of power
13:11 and 400 Newton meters of torque.
13:14 So it's a decent helping of power and torque there.
13:16 And I think it really sort of sits in that good middle band
13:19 of enough to sort of get up and go,
13:21 but not enough to sort of pull your face off too much.
13:24 So if we feed on the throttle here,
13:26 yeah, look, it feels really good.
13:29 You can tell, again, because it's rear wheel drive,
13:31 you can tell as you get to the upper end
13:33 of the throttle position there,
13:36 that it tries to limit how much torque
13:37 it's sending to the rear.
13:39 And earlier today, when it was wet,
13:40 I had everything sort of switched off
13:42 to see how it would work.
13:43 It acts as an open differential effectively.
13:46 So it won't let you do anything too silly
13:47 because it's only sending torque to one side as it goes.
13:50 It's not really set up as a limited slip differential.
13:53 So it's not a car that you can drive
13:55 to sort of to drift and have fun with,
13:57 but it is a car that has adequate power
13:59 to sort of get up and going.
13:59 And then it does all the EV stuff.
14:01 You know, when you plant the foot down,
14:03 there's that instant torque available across that rev band.
14:06 Let's talk about economy.
14:07 So BMW claims just over 20 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers.
14:11 We are currently sitting on 18.8.
14:15 Now that is a really impressive figure,
14:17 and I'll tell you why.
14:19 I'm used to, you know, my Model 3 doing something
14:21 like 17 kilowatt hours per 100 Ks,
14:23 and that is a lighter vehicle than this.
14:26 That's actually a really good number.
14:27 They're quite efficient for an SUV.
14:30 So it does show you that when they do put effort into it,
14:33 they can actually bring the economy of these right down.
14:36 So I mentioned earlier, 80 kilowatt hour battery,
14:38 and it gives you a driving range of WLTP,
14:40 a little over 450 kilometers.
14:43 That's not a bad figure in real life.
14:44 You'll probably be getting closer to that 400 kilometer mark
14:47 in terms of your usable range,
14:48 which I think is pretty decent.
14:50 So given it is a BMW, is it sportier than the iX feels?
14:54 Well, let's pop it into sport mode.
14:55 So immediately I can feel the ride get much firmer there.
14:59 Steering is heavier as well.
15:01 We'll put it through our corner here.
15:03 Yeah, look, it's okay.
15:08 You know, it doesn't have that torque
15:11 that you find in dual motor EVs,
15:13 where it sort of pins you back in the seat.
15:14 There's only so much you can send through the rear wheels
15:16 before it sort of starts going sideways,
15:18 but it is dynamic enough.
15:20 The body doesn't sit super flat,
15:22 but given you have the battery seated so low
15:24 within the cabin, you do get a lower center of gravity,
15:27 and it does feel sporty in that sense.
15:29 It's just not going to light the world on fire
15:32 in terms of dynamic response,
15:34 but it does feel more BMW than the iX did in that sense.
15:38 I'll also call out just while we're driving here,
15:39 you've got a couple of different regen modes as well.
15:43 So in the sport mode, if I roll out of the throttle,
15:46 it feels like it's slowing down more aggressively,
15:48 but I do have the ability to slide it over into B mode.
15:52 Now in B mode, when I roll out of the throttle,
15:54 it'll actually come to a complete stop,
15:57 similar to the Nissan LEAF or Tesla products as well.
16:01 It just comes to a complete stop,
16:03 and then it will just hold the car there for you
16:05 until you're ready to take off.
16:06 And then when you aren't in that B mode,
16:08 it slows down, but it doesn't come to a complete stop.
16:11 So it still sort of rolls along there a little bit,
16:13 and then you eventually have to take over
16:15 and come to a complete stop with the car.
16:17 BMW claims a zero to 100 time of 6.8 seconds.
16:21 This is how it went up against our stopwatch.
16:23 (car engine roaring)
16:26 Now, what about our road noise?
16:33 So we're on our country road here.
16:34 Let's dial it up to highway speeds.
16:38 Look, it's okay.
16:39 There is a degree of tire noise coming into the cabin.
16:42 It's definitely nowhere near as quiet as the iX,
16:45 and we've got our sine waves here.
16:46 Let's see what the ride's like.
16:48 Yeah, that's really impressive.
16:51 So I did complain in our iX review
16:53 that the ride was way too soft
16:55 and it didn't feel very BMW.
16:57 This on the other hand is the opposite.
16:59 So the ride is firm-ish in comfort mode.
17:01 You've got to remember this is fitted
17:02 with that M Sport package, so you do feel that,
17:05 but it has adaptive damping.
17:06 So as you move between the three drive modes you have there,
17:09 you can feel a progression there
17:10 in terms of ride firmness
17:12 and also the way the steering feels.
17:13 Now let's roll this back into comfort mode.
17:16 What's visibility like?
17:17 So the good news is it's exactly like any other X3.
17:19 So I can see clearly down the front of the car there,
17:21 good visibility out the front of the cabin.
17:23 Big wing mirrors as well.
17:24 They've got a blind spot monitor built into them.
17:26 And then visibility out the rear is excellent too.
17:28 That's a big old envelope there.
17:30 In terms of parking, look,
17:31 this has all of those cameras that I showed you earlier,
17:34 but the steering is super light at low speeds
17:37 and you have a turning circle of a little over 12 metres.
17:40 So it's a pretty chunky turning circle,
17:42 but really isn't the end of the world.
17:44 So the BMW iX3.
17:48 I was actually surprised by this.
17:49 It's another one of these cars
17:52 that is an internal combustion car
17:53 that they've converted to electric,
17:55 but they've actually done a really good job with it
17:57 because it's efficient, it's fun to drive,
17:59 and it just feels like any other BMW,
18:01 which I think is important for a lot of consumers
18:03 that aren't quite ready to do the leap
18:05 to those sort of out there designs
18:07 like the iX that BMW sells as well.
18:09 It is significantly cheaper than things like the EQC,
18:12 the I-PACE and the e-tron.
18:13 They're its main competitors in that sense.
18:15 But I think where it's gonna stumble the most
18:17 is when the Model Y goes on sale in Australia.
18:20 At $115,000, that's probably gonna get you something
18:23 like the performance version of the Model Y,
18:25 which will be similar in size to this.
18:27 It'll be significantly quicker
18:28 and probably have more range as well.
18:30 So that is worth just keeping in mind.
18:32 But for the moment,
18:33 I really just think that this is a compelling package
18:35 and at that price point,
18:36 it delivers the perfect balance between a normal car
18:39 and all the electric stuff
18:40 that you'd associate with a good EV.
18:42 So let me know in the comments section,
18:44 have you bought one of these?
18:46 What's it like to live with daily?
18:47 And did you option all the blue stuff
18:49 so everyone knows that you're being green in your X3?
18:52 I'm keen for your feedback.
