Transcript
00:00 G'day I'm Paul.
00:00 So BMW has just rolled out a brand new 5 Series
00:03 and they've actually flown one to Australia.
00:05 This is a pre-production car.
00:07 So today I'm gonna run you through
00:08 some of the cool new things that are coming to 5 Series
00:10 and this in particular,
00:12 which is the top spec electric version.
00:14 It's called the i5 M60, which I'm pretty excited about.
00:18 Now this is gonna be launching in Australia
00:19 in Q4 this year.
00:20 So still a little while away,
00:22 but this will give us a bit of a sneak peek
00:24 and to see exactly what's going on
00:25 underneath the skin there.
00:26 So if you haven't subscribed to our channel yet,
00:28 please make sure you do.
00:29 And make sure you hit the bell icon as well
00:31 'cause that's gonna tell you every single time
00:32 we get to have a look at one of these pre-production cars.
00:35 Okay, before we have a look
00:37 at some of these design elements,
00:38 let me run you through the sizing.
00:39 So it's longer, wider, taller.
00:42 It's on a longer wheel base as well.
00:44 It's kind of similar to what they've done
00:45 with the 7 Series.
00:46 They've just supersized it
00:48 and bridged the gap between sedan and SUV.
00:50 And I kind of like that
00:51 because sedans were always a little bit too small,
00:53 whereas now it's getting to the size
00:55 where it really needs to be
00:56 if you don't wanna have an SUV.
00:58 Also, I love what they've done here with the light game.
01:00 It is so cool.
01:01 So you've got these LED rings around the kidney grill.
01:04 Then in addition to that,
01:05 you have a new daytime running light
01:07 and a new sequence as well.
01:08 So when you do unlock the car,
01:10 this all lights up
01:12 and it gives you that new signature
01:13 over on the headlights as well.
01:15 So I think they've done a really good job there
01:16 in terms of just giving this a really unique appearance.
01:19 You'll know that this is the new 5 Series out on the road.
01:22 On the design front,
01:23 I like here with the bonnet,
01:24 how they've sculpted that there.
01:25 So the BMW logo just sits a little recess there
01:29 to the level of the bonnet.
01:31 And the vehicle that you're looking at here
01:32 is the i5, which is the electric one.
01:35 There are two versions of the i5 coming to Australia.
01:37 They have the eDrive 40,
01:39 which is a rear wheel drive electric.
01:40 And then this one here,
01:41 which is the M60x drive,
01:43 which is the full fat M version all wheel drive.
01:46 They're also gonna do an internal combustion version
01:48 for Australia in the 520i.
01:50 That'll be rear wheel drive with a mild hybrid system.
01:52 With the electric versions,
01:53 you can say that's all closed over
01:54 because most of the cooling requirements
01:56 are down below here.
01:57 So it kind of gives it a nice neat look up the front there.
02:00 No ridiculous giant grill here either.
02:02 It's just all sort of nicely contained, which is good.
02:04 Over on the headlights, full LED headlights
02:06 with a matrix LED for the high beam as well.
02:09 Let's jump over to the wheels.
02:10 I'll show you what they look like.
02:11 Okay, so depending on which 5 Series model you choose,
02:14 you get to pick a variety of different wheel sizes.
02:17 Here on the M60, the 20 inch wheel is standard.
02:20 It can go up to 21 inches as well if you want to.
02:23 Keep in mind though, the 21 will actually reduce
02:25 the driving range.
02:26 I'll run you through some of those specs in a second.
02:27 Comes standard with the red brakes here.
02:29 You can go for a blue option if you want.
02:32 Also, I like this design.
02:33 So you've got the piano black finish there,
02:35 and then you've got these sections on the inside
02:37 for a little bit of aero as well,
02:39 and then the blue ring around the BMW center cap there,
02:43 which is a pretty cool setup.
02:44 So this is an E Primacy tire.
02:46 So I'll be keen to see how this actually goes
02:48 because this thing has a lot of punch
02:50 and I don't know whether an ECO tire
02:52 is going to be suitable for it.
02:53 So we'll see what sort of tires
02:55 these are actually delivered with
02:56 when it finally does come to Australia.
02:58 M badge up the top here as well.
03:00 Thought it was quite interesting under the bonnet too.
03:03 It has a giant sort of engine cover.
03:04 There is no storage there,
03:06 but there are a lot of components,
03:07 including some vibration isolation
03:10 for the air conditioning condenser as well.
03:12 So it is a pretty cool sort of setup there under the bonnet.
03:14 Now check this out as well.
03:16 You actually get like a proper M mirror here too
03:18 with that aero sculpting in there.
03:20 Indicator built into the wing mirror there.
03:22 Camera on the side.
03:23 New door handles.
03:24 Have a look at this.
03:25 That sits flush with the body.
03:27 These, I think we saw this recently
03:28 on the 7 Series as well.
03:30 So it's quite a nice setup.
03:31 Do keep in mind though,
03:32 like we mentioned in the iX video,
03:34 it is a good spot for spiders to hide
03:36 if you live in a spidery type of place.
03:39 Glass roof up the top here.
03:40 They said that the opening here is 90% bigger
03:43 than the previous generation of 5 Series.
03:45 That takes up pretty much that entire roof there,
03:47 which I quite like the look of.
03:49 Little 5 on the back there.
03:51 And then have a look at this.
03:52 Come on, I'll show you the charging options.
03:54 Actually, before I mentioned charging,
03:55 Igor, our cameraman drives an M3.
03:59 That has never been to the track,
04:01 but he told me I need to refer to this
04:03 as the Hoffmeister kink 'cause he was very insulted.
04:06 So this is where you charge your i5.
04:08 You have both DC and AC charging.
04:12 AC charging comes in the form of three phase,
04:15 up to 22 kilowatts.
04:16 And then DC charging will work it up to 205 kilowatts.
04:21 The numbers are okay,
04:22 but some of the competitors in this segment
04:24 are now using 800 volt architecture
04:26 that allows them to charge a little bit faster.
04:29 So that is worth keeping in mind.
04:30 Battery size here is usable around 80 kilowatt hours.
04:33 And that is regardless of whether you go
04:35 for the eDrive 40 or the M60.
04:37 It gives you a driving range for about 500 kilometers.
04:40 This is new as well.
04:41 A button here to release the charging cable.
04:43 One of the things that frustrates me the most
04:45 when it comes to these EVs, and it's not just BMW,
04:48 but if you do wanna release the charging cable,
04:50 you need to do a whole bunch of things
04:52 to get it to release.
04:52 Whereas here I can just walk up, press that,
04:54 out it comes and away we go.
04:57 Come and have a look at the back of the car.
04:59 Okay, so this is the rear of the 5 Series.
05:02 I quite like the way this looks.
05:03 So full LED taillights.
05:05 They sort of whip around the side there
05:06 and come up a little bit before tapering down
05:08 towards the edge there.
05:10 This is also a little bit different too.
05:11 Typically with sedans you see that the bottom section
05:14 might be a different color,
05:15 but it sort of stays body colored up the top here.
05:17 I've actually brought that black section all the way up
05:20 just to give this a little bit of differentiation
05:22 at the rear.
05:22 And because this is an EV,
05:24 they wanna reduce as much drag as humanly possible.
05:28 Beneath the body there,
05:29 you actually have a fully flat floor
05:30 where the battery packs are,
05:32 but then you have a diffuser at the rear.
05:33 So they're adding all of these elements in
05:35 to make sure that this can be as efficient as possible.
05:38 And that translates through
05:39 to the internal combustion versions as well
05:41 that have a cover at the bottom there too.
05:43 BMW logo there, reverse camera with a washer
05:46 built into there, M60 badge.
05:48 Quite like this black boot lip spoiler there as well.
05:50 It looks sort of really nice here
05:52 against this red color as well,
05:53 which is new to the 5 Series.
05:55 Let's have a little look inside the boot.
05:57 So how much cargo space have you got?
05:58 Well, a little over 500 liters
06:01 if you go for the internal combustion models.
06:03 If you go for the electric ones, 490 liters,
06:06 but it's pretty sort of deep space in there, which is good.
06:08 And you have a little bit of storage under floor here
06:10 for things like your charging cable,
06:13 hooks up the top here for your shopping as well.
06:15 You can then drop your second row
06:18 just by pulling these levers here as well,
06:20 which gives you a bit more access there for longer items.
06:23 So we are inside the 5 Series now.
06:25 Let's start off with just some of these design elements.
06:28 Just like we saw in the new 7 Series,
06:30 they've got these glass panels
06:32 that actually have LED lights that surround them.
06:35 And they kind of go around the driver here
06:37 and to the front of the cabin.
06:39 These look sensational.
06:40 And the cool thing is when you do change your drive modes,
06:43 for example, what it actually does
06:45 is it lights it all up in different colors.
06:47 Have a look at this.
06:48 If I go into efficient mode, look at that,
06:50 just chasing that light all the way down the side of the car.
06:52 It is so cool that they have played with LEDs here,
06:56 just like they have at the front.
06:58 Also, in addition to that,
06:59 you have touch sensitive controls for your climate.
07:01 So you can open and close vents
07:03 just by running your finger across those.
07:05 And then you have these little things down here as well
07:08 to adjust the direction of those vents too.
07:10 So they really are sort of being quite creative with that.
07:12 In addition to that, they have moved to OS 8.5.
07:16 So there are just a few small changes here
07:18 in terms of the way this operates.
07:19 And just as an example, on your home screen,
07:22 this is a pre-production car,
07:23 so it doesn't have the map display,
07:24 but that is where the map would typically be.
07:27 All of your menus are now in here.
07:28 So you can swipe up and down,
07:30 and depending on what the menu is,
07:31 you can go left and right within those as well.
07:33 Also different now as well,
07:34 which is a big improvement, is your climate control.
07:37 So in addition to having temperature changing here,
07:40 you can now also turn your heated seats,
07:42 cooled seats on and off there
07:44 without having to dive through several different menus.
07:46 So all of that functionality is down the bottom there.
07:49 So I really like that.
07:50 On the design front, carbon along here,
07:52 you've got those glass elements that I mentioned.
07:54 Glass here in the center as well.
07:56 And this whole unit here
07:57 just looks really high-end and premium.
08:00 I'll be interested to see what it looks like
08:01 on the base models that aren't sort of super expensive,
08:03 but this all looks really nice.
08:05 And limited use of piano black, which is excellent news.
08:08 Another fascinating thing they've done here as well,
08:10 which I think is a really clever innovation,
08:12 with the wireless phone charger,
08:14 normally when you have your phone on there
08:15 for an extended period, it gets really hot,
08:17 and then it'll either stop charging
08:19 or when you put it in your pocket,
08:20 it'll like burn a hole in your pants.
08:22 Well, here there's actually small vents
08:24 that extract that heat
08:26 and then run a bit of cool air behind your phone.
08:28 And it means that it can actually cool down
08:30 while it's charging, which I think is great.
08:32 In addition to that OS 8.5,
08:34 you're getting this curved display here, which we love.
08:37 So it's both a touchscreen
08:38 and can also be driven through the iDrive controller.
08:41 15 inches on this side, 12.3 inches here
08:43 ahead of the driver.
08:45 New steering wheel as well with a flat bottom there.
08:47 Simplified control, so you can just flick
08:49 through a couple of those menus just using these.
08:51 These also light up as well to give you warnings
08:53 while you're driving.
08:54 So for example, if you're veering out of your lane
08:56 or it wants you to grab your steering wheel,
08:58 it will light these things up.
08:59 This lever just here gives you a little bit of boost.
09:02 So if you pull that, you get extra acceleration,
09:05 which I think is kind of fun,
09:06 like a curse mode or something like that.
09:09 And then in addition to that,
09:10 the M60 also gets this red center strap here as well,
09:13 just in case you spontaneously decide to do some drifting.
09:17 While you do have a 12 speaker sound system that's standard,
09:19 you can upgrade to this optional 18 speaker Bowers
09:23 and Wilkins sound system.
09:24 Even has these metal covers over the speakers too,
09:27 which I think is a very classy setup.
09:29 How about this one too?
09:30 If you do want to play games while you're waiting
09:32 for the car to charge, they have air console.
09:35 So that allows you to connect with the car
09:37 using your phone.
09:38 This is your central gaming screen,
09:39 but then you use your phone as a controller.
09:42 You can have two players doing that
09:43 while your vehicle is charging,
09:44 which I think is a pretty clever setup.
09:46 And then in addition to that,
09:47 similar to what Hyundai and Kia does,
09:49 actually have happy kids mode.
09:51 So when you do activate that,
09:52 you can tell the vehicle what to do.
09:54 So you can enable ambient lighting,
09:55 do not disturb for your phone,
09:57 have speakers only at the front.
09:59 It can also increase the temperature
10:00 to help the kids fall asleep.
10:02 Also runs a camera inside the cabin
10:05 as well, which I reckon is great.
10:06 Means you can have a look at the kids in the backseat
10:08 and make sure that they're very well behaved.
10:11 Now, before we jump into the back,
10:12 I want to run you through some of the performance specs.
10:14 So the entry level i5 eDrive 40
10:17 will do zero to 100 in six seconds,
10:19 and that has 250 kilowatts of power.
10:21 When you step up to the M60 though,
10:23 that is when it gets a little bit crazy.
10:24 It's just under 450 kilowatts of power
10:27 and it'll do zero to 100 in under four seconds.
10:30 So it's pretty much M550 in terms of pace.
10:33 But I just think that is insane.
10:35 If you go for the internal combustion option here
10:37 for Australia, which is the 520i,
10:39 that'll do zero to 100 in around seven and a half seconds.
10:42 Okay, second row time.
10:43 So yes, longer wheelbase means I have more knee room.
10:47 Toe room isn't very good.
10:48 It's kind of cramped under there.
10:49 Seems to be the case with a lot of EVs
10:51 'cause of the batteries,
10:52 but headroom is pretty good here.
10:54 So this definitely feels like a previous generation
10:57 7 Series in terms of space, which is interesting.
11:00 Down the bottom here, I love this.
11:02 You've got a new capacitive touch display
11:05 for your climate controls and also the seat heating.
11:07 So nice innovative thing that looks
11:09 just a little bit different to everything else
11:10 you see out there at the moment.
11:11 USB-C charging down here, air vents,
11:14 USB-C charging up the top here as well.
11:16 Center armrest here with a couple of cup holders.
11:19 Got all your ISO fix points and that kind of stuff.
11:21 So that has been your first look at the new BMW 5 Series.
11:25 I'm quite excited to drive this, the M60.
11:28 It should be good fun.
11:28 And I'm very excited to see whether they continue
11:31 with the big old V8 under the bonnet here for the M5
11:34 because that will be very exciting as well.
11:37 Now, if you did enjoy this video,
11:38 please make sure you like it
11:39 and you share it with your mates.
11:41 And if you do have any questions about the new 5 Series,
11:43 let me know in the comment section below.
11:44 It'll go on sale in Australia later this year
11:47 and I'm excited to have a bit of a spin.
11:48 So thank you for watching and until next time, take it easy.
