Transcript
00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So people are desperate for SUVs,
00:02 but they're also desperate for EV SUVs.
00:05 And one of the ones that I think has come up
00:07 sort of left of field is this.
00:09 It's the Genesis Electrified GV70.
00:12 So we have reviewed the GV70 before,
00:14 but this is the full electric version of it.
00:17 Now this competes with things like, I guess,
00:19 the BMW iX3, the Mercedes-Benz EQC, and the Audi e-tron.
00:24 We don't have pricing for this just yet for Australia,
00:27 but we're thinking it'll be around that $110,000 mark.
00:30 So it'll be quite a premium proposition.
00:32 Now, today we're gonna do a quick drive
00:34 of the Electrified GV70 before it goes on sale
00:37 in Australia later on this year.
00:39 So it'll be our first sampler.
00:41 If you do wanna skip ahead to other parts
00:43 of this quick drive,
00:44 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:45 or if you're on YouTube,
00:46 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:48 And if you haven't done so already,
00:50 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon,
00:52 'cause that's gonna tell you every single time
00:54 we publish a review of an EV.
00:56 (air whooshing)
00:57 Now, before we kick off this design section,
01:00 I just wanna mention that this is a pre-production car.
01:02 So if you do see some weird things on here,
01:04 and there are a couple of odd ones I will point out,
01:06 don't take it to heart, they're still working on it.
01:08 In terms of your color palette,
01:10 this is available in nine standard colors
01:12 and four matte colors.
01:13 And this is one of the matte colors.
01:14 I'm a huge fan of this.
01:15 It looks fantastic in the sun here,
01:18 and I think it really sets apart the GV70
01:20 from other cars on the road.
01:22 Now have a look down the front here.
01:23 This is unique to the EV.
01:25 It's basically a closed-off grill.
01:28 It looks similar to the internal combustion version
01:30 of the GV70, but it's obviously different
01:33 with these closed-off sections.
01:34 This is also where you'll find the charger.
01:36 I'll run you through that in a little bit more detail
01:38 later on.
01:39 Radar down the bottom here as well,
01:40 and then that Genesis logo up the top.
01:43 In terms of your headlights,
01:44 it's a full LED headlight package
01:46 with a matrix LED function.
01:48 Then in addition to that, you also have LED indicators
01:51 and a daytime running light built into there.
01:53 Signature design here with that twin-stripe setup
01:56 that's common across other Genesis products,
01:58 and I think that looks really cool.
01:59 Now, around the side here,
02:00 you've got a set of 20-inch alloy wheels.
02:03 I like this design.
02:04 It's kind of like a brushed aluminum look,
02:06 and I think it really sets this apart nicely.
02:09 Big set of stoppers there as well.
02:10 Even though this does have all your regen braking
02:13 and the I-pedal setup that will bring it to a full stop,
02:15 it still does need friction brakes every now and then,
02:18 and that's what that setup is there for.
02:19 Decent profile on that tire too.
02:21 So I'll run through this in a bit more detail
02:23 when we go for a drive,
02:24 but this vehicle has had a damper selection
02:27 specifically for Australia.
02:28 So instead of tuning in Australia,
02:30 they're now going to the markets
02:32 that Genesis vehicles are sold
02:33 and then picking the products that will suit best
02:35 for the Australian market.
02:36 Just above the wheel there,
02:37 you've got body-colored wheel arch guards,
02:40 I guess you could call them there.
02:41 So thankfully, they haven't gone
02:42 for that big old plastic setup.
02:44 Up the top here, you've got an indicator
02:46 built into that wing mirror
02:47 with a piano black section down the bottom,
02:49 plus a camera built into there as well.
02:51 You've got this garnish element down the bottom,
02:53 which is kind of a reflective element
02:55 and blends in well with that matte color.
02:58 Privacy glass, you've got a full panoramic roof,
03:00 roof rails, and then come around to the back.
03:03 Now this is probably my favorite part of the GV70.
03:06 It just looks sensational.
03:07 So you've got these LED strip lights along the rear.
03:10 You've also got a brake light integrated into here.
03:12 It is the thinnest LED strip I've ever seen.
03:14 That's great.
03:15 You've got a shark fin aerial up the top there.
03:17 This is where they hide the button for the boot release.
03:20 Genesis badging there worn pretty proudly.
03:22 Now you will notice as well,
03:23 different to the standard GV70,
03:25 which has exhaust pipes here on either side,
03:27 depending on whether you go for the sport model
03:29 or the luxury.
03:30 This is just a very clean setup.
03:32 Obviously no exhaust pipe.
03:33 I do like how they've kept a similar design there
03:35 that you would normally see on an internal combustion car,
03:37 but they've gone ahead and removed all the exhausts
03:39 and the stuff that obviously doesn't relate to EVs.
03:41 So let me know what you reckon in the comment section below.
03:43 Do you think the GV70 is a decent looker?
03:46 Or do you think they should have gone down the path
03:47 of Mercedes-Benz with the EQC,
03:50 where they try and make the EV version of their vehicles
03:53 look completely different?
03:54 So we are sitting inside the GV70 or the electrified GV70.
03:58 This is what the key looks like.
04:00 You've got lock, unlock, boot.
04:02 You've got the auto parking feature
04:04 and then a push to start.
04:06 On the back there, you've got the Genesis logo
04:08 and this sort of grippy material on it.
04:10 Proximity sensing key.
04:11 So you leave that in your pocket.
04:12 Once you're inside,
04:13 you have a button here to switch everything on.
04:15 Now it is worth keeping in mind,
04:16 this also has a fingerprint sensor.
04:19 So it'll recall all of your settings
04:21 when you get inside the car, which I think is pretty cool.
04:23 Yeah, does this look familiar to you?
04:25 Well, it should because it looks virtually the exact same
04:27 as the standard GV70.
04:29 A couple of exceptions are the boost button here
04:31 on the steering wheel.
04:32 But for the most part,
04:33 everything here looks just like it does in the GV70.
04:35 Now, I actually think that's a good thing
04:37 because it means if you are familiar with GV70,
04:40 you like the luxury elements of it.
04:42 You're getting the exact same thing here
04:44 without any sort of funky EV treatment.
04:46 So big plus there.
04:48 Now with the GV70,
04:49 that means all of your materials
04:51 really just feel high-end and premium.
04:52 So you've got all this soft touch stuff
04:54 along the dashboard there, that exposed stitching.
04:57 I like these sort of brushed aluminium segments along there.
05:00 It really is just a very premium looking interior.
05:03 Now, normally this is where we would do our build quality
05:06 and our geometer test,
05:07 but because this is pre-production,
05:09 I'm not going to bother with any of that.
05:11 Now, moving on to infotainment.
05:12 So you get a 14.5 inch infotainment screen.
05:16 I love the look of this.
05:17 It is big, wide.
05:18 It just really sits prominently atop the dashboard there.
05:21 It's very high resolution as well.
05:22 It's both a touchscreen
05:24 and also can be controlled using this.
05:26 I hate this, but I also don't love it
05:29 'cause you sometimes get it confused for the gear stick
05:32 or the gear selector.
05:33 So it is a little bit confusing there,
05:35 but for the most part, that's fine.
05:37 This is all pretty straightforward.
05:38 The only change here you'll see from a standard GV70
05:41 is the EV menu.
05:42 So that's where you'll find the ability
05:44 to activate vehicle to load,
05:45 schedule charging,
05:46 and just see how much charge you have left.
05:48 I will point out as well that you're getting
05:50 a killer stereo, 16 speaker Lexicon branded stereo.
05:53 It is excellent in this car.
05:55 In addition to that, you have AM, FM,
05:57 and DAB plus digital radio.
05:59 Smartphone mirroring comes in the form of Apple CarPlay
06:02 and Android Auto.
06:03 Both of those are wired as well,
06:05 so no wireless, unfortunately.
06:06 Now, this is a pre-production car,
06:08 but ahead of the driver in the production car,
06:10 you're actually going to get that full screen there
06:12 with the 3D elements as well,
06:14 like we've seen in other GV70 models.
06:16 Let's talk about safety tech.
06:17 So this is loaded with pretty much everything you need.
06:19 You have AEB that detects both pedestrians and cyclists.
06:23 You've got an auto dimming rear vision mirror.
06:25 You've got a junction assistant, rear cross traffic alert,
06:28 a lane departure warning, and a lane keeping assistant.
06:31 Semi-autonomous steering function, radar cruise control,
06:33 blind spot monitor,
06:34 but for the vehicle that will come to Australia,
06:36 you'll get the camera integrated
06:38 into that display ahead of the driver as well.
06:41 So that'll make it easier to see things
06:42 that are either side of you.
06:44 You've also got a safe exit assistant,
06:45 so you don't accidentally open the door into traffic.
06:48 An active bonnet.
06:49 And finally, you have both front and rear parking sensors
06:52 with a 360 camera.
06:53 I'll show you what that looks like.
06:55 There it is there.
06:55 That's really high quality, nice and detailed.
06:57 Then in addition to that,
06:58 you can change the views as required
07:01 and also do a swivel around view as well,
07:04 which I think is nice and fun.
07:07 Let's talk about your connectivity options.
07:09 So in here, you've got two USB-A ports,
07:11 Qi wireless phone charger.
07:13 In here, you'll find a 12-volt outlet.
07:16 Plenty of places to store things as well.
07:18 So your phone can live in there.
07:19 You've got these two cup holders here
07:21 with teeth built into them.
07:22 You've got generous door bins as well,
07:25 plus plenty of storage here in the centre.
07:27 You have a decent sized glove box as well.
07:29 It doesn't feel like they've really
07:31 compromised anything here.
07:32 I mean, you're even getting a sunglasses holder too.
07:35 So plenty of places to store your odds and ends.
07:37 And then your comfort features.
07:39 So dual zone automatic climate control.
07:41 Heated and cooled seats for the front here.
07:44 I love the seat design.
07:45 These are very comfortable to sit in.
07:48 So you've got that diamond quilted pattern there,
07:50 Nappa leather seats.
07:52 In addition to these both being
07:53 fully electrically adjustable,
07:55 they have this feature called Ergo Comfort,
07:57 and they both have these air cells built into the seats
08:01 that can inflate and give you a massage
08:03 while you're driving.
08:04 So pretty impressive technology set up there,
08:06 and I like the way they've done that.
08:08 Steering wheel is electrically adjustable
08:10 and offers both tilt and reach adjustment.
08:14 And then on our reach test,
08:15 all of this stuff is easy to reach,
08:16 but if you do want to use this as a touchscreen,
08:18 you really do have to move forward for that.
08:20 So second row of the GV70.
08:23 Let's talk about leg room first.
08:24 So knee room is okay.
08:27 Toe room is reasonable.
08:29 Headroom is pretty good.
08:30 Yeah, my driver's seat is pretty far back,
08:32 so you can see how much room I have available there.
08:35 I wish this was just a tiny bit more.
08:37 It just needs a little bit more space, but anyway.
08:39 In terms of your other creature comforts,
08:41 down here you have a third zone of climate control.
08:43 Seat heating for the two outboard seats.
08:46 Beneath here you've got two USB-A ports.
08:48 You've got mat pockets in here.
08:50 You have the ability to move the passenger seat
08:52 forwards and backwards using these walk-in controls.
08:55 That's what they call them.
08:56 Look at that, pretty much a flat floor down the bottom here,
08:58 which is great to see.
09:00 Center armrest with two cup holders.
09:02 These seats actually recline,
09:04 so you can move them backwards and forwards if you need to.
09:07 You've got storage inside the doors for a bottle.
09:10 You've also got this window shade here
09:12 for a little bit of extra privacy.
09:14 ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats
09:16 and top tether points as well.
09:18 Finally, our window test.
09:20 Do you go all the way down?
09:22 Yes, yes, yes.
09:23 Oh, just stopped right there,
09:24 but auto up and down, which is good to see.
09:26 Now, what about your cargo space?
09:28 So I mentioned earlier,
09:29 you press this button to open the boot.
09:31 Power tailgate.
09:33 You have a little under 550 litres of cargo space here,
09:36 so not a huge compromise
09:38 with all of the electric components.
09:40 Beneath the cargo floor,
09:41 you have storage for the cargo blind.
09:43 Odds and ends, including your charging equipment.
09:46 What I love over here is this is where
09:48 one of your V2L ports is,
09:50 so you can get up to 3.6 kilowatts,
09:52 16 amps out of that, which is great.
09:54 12 volt outlet, a little bit of storage off to the sides.
09:57 Show you what it looks like with our Pelican in there.
10:00 Quack, quack.
10:01 That's the sound Pelicans make.
10:03 You can then increase the space in here
10:06 by dropping your second row,
10:08 and that pretty much creates a flat floor
10:11 and expands the space to just under 1,700 litres.
10:14 Now, before we go for a drive,
10:16 I wanna run you through charging.
10:16 So I mentioned in the intro,
10:18 this is where the charger is.
10:19 It's kind of cleverly hidden behind there.
10:21 I love the fact that this is at the front of the car,
10:23 and I prefer it to either be at the front or the back,
10:26 one or the other, but not on the side.
10:28 It really is hard to reach some of those side charges
10:31 when you're trying to do DC charging,
10:32 and you drape cables over the car.
10:34 Not good for your paintwork.
10:35 So here you have beneath the skin,
10:37 an 80-ish kilowatt hour battery,
10:39 a little bit less than that,
10:40 but the charging capacity here is excellent.
10:42 So you have AC and DC charging.
10:45 AC charging, three phase up to 11 kilowatts,
10:47 which is pretty much as fast as you need
10:49 for a three phase setup.
10:50 Then down the bottom, you have DC charging.
10:53 Now this is capable of running at 800 volts
10:55 and also up to 350 kilowatts.
10:57 If this is like the Ioniq 5,
10:59 it'll hit that 230 kilowatt marker
11:01 without any dramas at all.
11:02 So this is some excellent charging technology.
11:05 Now, in addition to that,
11:06 you also have a charging indicator here
11:08 and the ability to do vehicle to load,
11:10 and that means you can use the car's battery
11:12 to run other devices,
11:13 and you can do that at up to 3.6 kilowatts,
11:16 which is really impressive.
11:17 So we've just hit the road in the electrified GV70.
11:23 Now under the bonnet here, it's interesting.
11:25 So they've basically just taken
11:26 the internal combustion engine out entirely
11:29 and swapped it all out with EV components and the battery.
11:32 So they use two electric motors,
11:34 one for the front axle, one for the rear axle.
11:36 Now in boost mode, they can produce up to 180 kilowatts
11:39 on the front axle and 180 kilowatts on the rear axle,
11:43 and that gives you a combined output
11:45 of 360 kilowatts in boost mode,
11:48 which is pretty impressive,
11:49 and that equates to a torque output of 700 newton meters.
11:53 So that is a really big meaty amount
11:55 that's gonna put a big smile on your face
11:56 when you do slam the throttle down.
11:58 Now, speaking of slamming the throttle down,
12:00 does it do all the fancy EV stuff?
12:02 So I'll put it in boost mode.
12:04 Yes. (laughs)
12:05 Yes, it absolutely does.
12:07 That is all fine.
12:08 So big tick there for, you know, face bending EV stuff.
12:12 Now in terms of low speed driving,
12:13 Hyundai's developed a system called i-PEDAL,
12:16 and the way that it works is you have three levels of regen
12:18 that you can control here on the steering wheel.
12:20 It goes all the way from zero, which you can see up there,
12:22 which is just strictly a coasting mode,
12:24 down to level one, two, and three,
12:27 and finally, you have i-PEDAL.
12:29 Now with i-PEDAL, it brings the car
12:31 to a complete stop just like it does
12:33 in the Tesla Model 3 or the Nissan LEAF.
12:35 They kind of pioneered that technology,
12:37 and it tends to work pretty well.
12:39 The i-PEDAL system will recognize
12:41 when you need to slow down a little bit quicker,
12:42 and then you can modulate the throttle pedal
12:44 to bring it down faster or to just maintain a bit of speed
12:49 before it does come to a full stop.
12:51 Interestingly though, unlike a Tesla Model 3,
12:53 when you do come to a full stop here,
12:55 it kind of bounces on the spot a little bit.
12:58 It doesn't feel like it applies the brakes,
13:00 and it can be a little unnerving if you are on a hill
13:02 'cause it kind of feels like it's rocking.
13:03 So a little curious thing there to just keep an eye out.
13:07 And then also on that boost mode,
13:08 it can run in boost mode for up to 10 seconds,
13:11 but you can just keep reapplying it every single time.
13:13 I don't know why they don't just make boost mode
13:16 full throttle or something like that,
13:18 but yeah, I guess this is their performance setting,
13:21 if you wanna call it that.
13:22 What you'll notice here ahead of the driver
13:23 is something slightly different
13:24 to the internal combustion car.
13:26 Over on the right-hand side, you've got a charge window,
13:28 so if I roll out of the throttle,
13:30 you can see it goes into charge mode,
13:32 and then the harder I push the throttle,
13:34 it then eventually goes into that power mode,
13:36 and then also eventually into the boost mode
13:38 when you do activate the boost mode here
13:40 on the steering wheel.
13:41 Then down on the bottom left, you have your battery gauge.
13:44 Looks just like a fuel gauge.
13:45 Tells you what battery state you're in,
13:47 and then you can go through your trip computer
13:48 to see how much range you have left as well.
13:51 We don't know what the exact driving figure's
13:54 gonna be for Australia,
13:56 but Genesis quotes in overseas markets
13:58 around 450 plus kilometres for this,
14:01 depending on the cycle that it's tested on.
14:03 That's pretty reasonable.
14:03 If you look at the rest of the cars in this segment,
14:05 that's about where you wanna be
14:07 in terms of the charging speed
14:08 and how much travel you're able to get out of a full charge.
14:11 And in terms of that full charge,
14:13 you've got both AC and DC charging,
14:14 so it is able to charge nice and quickly.
14:16 If you were to go to, well,
14:17 one of the fastest chargers you can find,
14:20 10 to 80% is only gonna take around
14:21 that sort of 25-minute mark,
14:23 which I think is pretty impressive,
14:24 and that's about the limit where most people
14:26 are willing to wait for their car to charge.
14:28 Now, what's the ride like at low speeds?
14:33 It's actually really impressive.
14:35 So this uses an adaptive damping setup,
14:37 and in addition to that,
14:38 it uses a camera up here to read the road surface ahead,
14:41 and it can then tailor how the car feels
14:43 as it rides on different surfaces.
14:45 I will caveat this by saying
14:46 we're on a private track at the moment,
14:48 and it's all pretty smooth.
14:50 In the past, though, when we have driven the GV70
14:53 and when we reviewed the V6,
14:54 and you can click up here to watch that review,
14:56 the ride was actually fantastic,
14:57 despite the fact it had pretty big wheels
14:59 and low-profile tyres.
15:01 Unlike Hyundais of previous and Kia today,
15:04 they're not doing any local ride
15:06 and handling tuning on these cars.
15:07 They're simply taking damper settings from other markets
15:10 and then adapting them for the Australian market.
15:13 So there isn't really a great deal of local tuning,
15:15 but at least there is some attention paid
15:17 to how this car rides on Australian roads.
15:20 Let's talk drive modes.
15:23 So you've got a switch here that allows you
15:25 to go between drive and terrain modes.
15:27 So if you do flick it to terrain,
15:28 you've got some off-road modes there to choose from.
15:31 Look, you're not gonna be doing any off-road driving
15:32 in this car.
15:33 This is predominantly a city car,
15:34 but if you do go to a campsite or something fun like that,
15:37 you can change between those settings.
15:39 And then in terms of drive modes,
15:40 you have Eco, Comfort, Sport, and My Mode.
15:43 So Comfort is just obviously the comfort setting,
15:45 but if you do flick it over to Sport mode,
15:48 everything sharpens up, the steering gets heavier,
15:50 you get more throttle response,
15:52 it's more willing to pin you back in the seat,
15:54 and the ride gets firmer as well.
15:56 Now, how does that feel through our corners?
15:59 We've got a couple of little corners coming up here.
16:02 Let's see how it goes through here.
16:05 Look, it does feel bigger and heavier
16:07 than an internal combustion version of the GV70,
16:12 but it sort of pins you back in your seat nicely.
16:16 And it's, I don't know, it's kind of,
16:18 kind of fun to actually throw around here.
16:21 So you do notice its weight.
16:22 It is noticeably heavier than an internal combustion GV70,
16:26 but it's actually pretty impressive.
16:30 In terms of the all-wheel drive system,
16:31 it doesn't feel like it's, I don't know,
16:34 it doesn't feel all that fancy
16:36 in terms of the way that it's distributing torque.
16:38 I do feel the wheel slipping a little bit
16:40 when you sort of punch it out of a corner,
16:43 but it's actually not bad.
16:44 It's pretty smile-inducing stuff.
16:45 Communication through the brake pedal's great.
16:47 So if you do wanna have like a bit of a fang,
16:49 it really will just communicate everything to you.
16:52 So yeah, look, it is fun to drive.
16:53 It's not going to be, I guess,
16:55 segment leading in terms of its performance.
16:57 I think something like a Tesla Model Y
16:59 in performance trim feels more engaging than this,
17:02 but equally that doesn't come with adaptive damping.
17:04 So it is going to feel a whole lot more firmer
17:06 and less luxurious than this does.
17:08 Now, Genesis quotes a zero to 100 time
17:11 of 4.5 seconds in boost mode.
17:14 This is how it went up against our stopwatch.
17:17 (car engine revving)
17:20 Let's flick this back to comfort mode.
17:30 What is it like in terms of road noise?
17:32 So I did mention this is a private circuit.
17:34 It's very smooth and it is very quiet on here,
17:37 but traditionally we have found with GV70
17:40 that it is actually pretty quiet in general.
17:41 There's a lot of padding here to just give you
17:43 a level of silence inside the cabin that you need.
17:46 And it is just a nice place to be seated
17:48 for long distance drives.
17:49 I would like to run this around our regular drive loop
17:52 to see how it performs with a little bit more pace
17:53 in some of those faster corners.
17:55 But for the most part, this feels great in comfort mode.
17:57 And I think that if you are doing a lot of city driving,
17:59 this will feel right at home inside the city.
18:02 (car engine revving)
18:05 So what's your visibility like?
18:07 So I keep mentioning this,
18:09 but because it's based on the GV70, it all feels great.
18:11 So I've got great visibility down the front of the car there.
18:14 The wing mirrors are pretty big,
18:15 so I can see clearly down the sides.
18:17 You've got a blind spot monitor built into there.
18:19 And as I mentioned,
18:19 you're gonna have that camera-based system here
18:22 when it does finally arrive in Australia.
18:24 Visibility at the back is good as well.
18:26 That envelope is pretty decent to see out of.
18:28 (upbeat music)
18:31 Now, electrified GV70, what do we reckon?
18:33 Look, I'm a fan of the GV70 in general.
18:36 What they've done here is taken all the best bits
18:38 from the GV70 and electrified them.
18:40 This doesn't really feel like some of the other competitors
18:43 in this segment that are ICE EV conversions.
18:45 Some people call them compliance EVs.
18:48 This doesn't actually feel like one of those.
18:49 This feels nice and punchy.
18:51 It handles like a GV70 does.
18:52 It does feel a little bit heavier,
18:54 but ultimately I'm really not too fussed by that.
18:56 It has excellent charging technology.
18:58 I think the range could be a little better,
19:00 especially when you look at some of the competitors
19:01 in this segment moving up in terms of range.
19:03 But at this price point,
19:04 you're getting an ultra luxury product that feels,
19:07 I guess, just far nicer than some of the other competitors
19:10 that you're gonna be paying more for
19:11 from German brand names.
19:13 So yeah, gets my tick of approval.
19:15 I am looking forward to driving the GV60 though.
19:17 That kind of excites me because that is an EV
19:20 from the ground up and it has all of the cool stuff
19:22 inside it as well.
19:23 Now, let me know in the comment section below,
19:25 have you been looking at a GV70 or an electrified GV70?
19:29 Ken, for your feedback, let me know what you think of it.
19:31 What do you think of the design?
19:32 Are you gonna buy one?
19:33 Let me know down there in the comment section.
19:34 Now, if you did enjoy this video,
19:36 please make sure you like it, you share it with your mates.
19:38 And if you haven't done so already,
19:39 you subscribe to our channel.
19:41 We're gonna be driving this when it finally launches
19:43 in Australia, not as a pre-production car,
19:45 and we will have more to share with you then.
19:47 But until next time, take it easy.
