Is this the perfect upgrade to the Tesla Model 3? That's what I want to figure out. We need a bigger car and want it to be an EV and the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 could be the one.

Paul Maric gets behind the wheel of Hyundai's all-new Ioniq 5 to see whether it's worth the switch from the Tesla Model 3.

Transcript
00:00 G'day, I'm Paul, I am really excited about driving this car.
00:03 It is the new Hyundai Ioniq 5.
00:05 We had a chance to check out a pre-production version earlier on in the year, wasn't allowed
00:09 to drive it, but today we finally get to see what it's like out here in the real world.
00:14 There are two specs available, and this one here is the top specification, it is the all-wheel
00:18 drive.
00:19 It's priced at a little over $75,000, but if that's too much, the entire range kicks
00:23 off at a little over $70,000 with the two-wheel drive version.
00:27 This competes with things like the Tesla Model 3 or the Tesla Model Y when it finally gets
00:31 here, and the Volvo XC40 Recharge.
00:34 There are a litany of other cars coming, but that's kind of all we have at the moment in
00:37 Australia that competes with this on price and features and range and that kind of thing.
00:41 Today we're going to do a detailed review of this car.
00:44 If you want to skip ahead to other parts of the review, you can use the time codes up
00:47 on the screen, or if you're on YouTube, scroll down and use those chapters down there.
00:50 If you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel, press the bell icon, that's
00:53 going to tell you every single time we drive one of these shiny new cars.
00:58 Let's talk about the outside first.
00:59 You've got six external colours to pick from.
01:01 They're all free of charge, which is great news, except the matte colours.
01:04 They're an extra $1,000, and I reckon this would look fantastic in a matte colour, so
01:08 if you are configuring, make sure you check those out.
01:11 So, what about the rest of this?
01:13 There is a lot happening there, and I don't know, EVs kind of have gone down the path
01:17 of looking like science projects, and certainly if you look at something like the BMW iX,
01:21 it just looks ridiculous, whereas this, I think, just looks futuristic, and not so much
01:26 like a science project.
01:27 And this thing turns heads, like everywhere I've been driving it, everyone has wanted
01:31 to look at it.
01:32 I don't know whether it's because it's a new car, or whether it's this design, but, you
01:36 know, it is certainly attention-grabbing.
01:38 So down the front here, you've got this bank of LEDs that run along the front end there.
01:42 That's then joined by your headlights, so LED headlights with LED daytime running lights,
01:47 and the indicator is in that strip there.
01:50 You can see this cube design follows the entire car, and it's similar to the Staria that we
01:54 tested recently.
01:55 So, along the front there, it's all that cubes, and then you've got cubes in there as well.
01:59 Down the bottom here, you've got these flaps that open up to provide cooling, but outside
02:03 of that, there really is no cooling that goes on, and I think that's indicative of where
02:07 EVs are heading.
02:08 They still need cooling, but it's not like a traditional internal combustion car that
02:11 relies on air running over radiators and intercoolers to keep the vehicle as cool as possible.
02:18 So big Hyundai logo up the top there, little camera as well.
02:21 We'll whip around to this side.
02:22 This is where you're going to find the 20-inch alloy wheels.
02:26 I can hear all you detailers out there falling off your chairs as you look at how complex
02:31 this is and how hard it would be to keep clean.
02:33 If you put that to one side, though, I think this design is so cool.
02:37 So it's like this because of aero, but it's cool aero.
02:40 If you look at something like the Tesla Model 3 with its aero wheel caps, it just looks
02:44 a bit silly, whereas this actually looks really cool, and it might be a nightmare to clean,
02:48 but I like that they've gone with something a little more adventurous here.
02:51 So the centre is piano black, and then you've got that brushed chrome look up the top.
02:55 Wheel arch protectors here because this is an all-wheel drive.
02:58 In the shape of like a camera shutter as well, you can see that sort of design.
03:01 You've got indicators built into that wing mirror.
03:03 Again, there's that cube design, little camera in there as well.
03:07 Love this, it looks like it's lit up at night time, and that runs down the side of the car
03:11 with a piano black strip down the bottom.
03:13 The door handle, similar to the Tesla Model 3, these tuck in when the car's locked.
03:18 The Teslas are always tucked in, but when it is flush with the body, it kind of follows
03:22 that same design.
03:23 You can see this crease that runs down the door there, it sort of connects into the bottom
03:26 section of the car.
03:28 I'm no designer, but I reckon that kind of looks cool.
03:30 Privacy glass, you've got a giant roof here that's made of glass as well.
03:34 This is available as a solar roof overseas, not in Australia, and the reason solar roofs
03:39 are kind of pointless is, if you think about your home roof, a panel this size is only
03:44 going to be about 250-300 watts, kind of pointless in the grand scheme of things.
03:48 At its slowest charging rate, this is like 2.4 kilowatts, and it'll take 24 hours to
03:53 charge, so you can imagine with a 300 watt roof panel, it's not really going to run anything,
03:57 maybe a fan or the 12 volt battery.
03:59 And also, it's susceptible to damage.
04:01 If you get hail or something like that, it's something that can potentially crack and give
04:05 you headaches down the track, so no big deal that we miss out on that.
04:08 Now, before I run you through the design elements back here, I want to put the size of this
04:12 into context, because in pictures, it looks way smaller than it actually is.
04:17 This vehicle is longer than a RAV4, it's wider than a RAV4, and a RAV4 is a pretty big car.
04:23 The wheelbase is longer than a Palisade, so it is dimensionally a big car.
04:28 It's not as tall as something like a RAV4, so it's not sort of SUV-like in that sense,
04:33 but it is a big footprint on the road, and it should mean that there's heaps of room
04:37 inside.
04:38 So just keep that in mind when you picture this car and how it fits into your life.
04:42 So you can see that design back here with the cubes, that continues there with that
04:46 taillight, that lights up as an indicator as well.
04:48 You've got reverse lights in there too.
04:50 I do like the lettering here, that looks really cool the way they've set that up.
04:54 I haven't seen that before.
04:55 It sort of sits out from the body, but the lettering is white, and it just really pops,
04:59 especially with this colour.
05:01 It's a very unique design.
05:02 So shark fin aerial, and then you've got this spoiler down here that allows the air to run
05:05 through down past that back window and off the car.
05:09 So let me know what you think about the design.
05:12 I think people are either going to love it or hate it, and I don't know whether that's
05:15 a good thing or a bad thing, but I'm really keen for your feedback.
05:18 Let me know what you think of the design.
05:19 Would you be happy to be driving around in something like this?
05:22 We're in the Ioniq 5, and we'll start off with the key.
05:25 So it looks like most other Hyundai keys, you have lock, unlock, a button there to open
05:30 the boot, a button to open the charge port, you have your automatic parking feature there,
05:35 and then a push and hold to start the car.
05:37 Proximity sensing key, so in your pocket, and then once you're inside, you have this
05:41 button here that says EV start/stop.
05:44 Now one thing, just before I go on the design, that I find really strange here is the wording
05:50 EV.
05:52 It's an electric vehicle.
05:53 Yes, I know it's an electric vehicle, because we're sitting in one.
05:55 It's not like you get into an internal combustion car and it says internal combustion start/stop.
06:00 So I just don't know why they do that.
06:02 It's even featured here on the menu for EV.
06:04 It's like, it is an EV.
06:06 There's no alternative to this.
06:07 So just something I thought I'd point out.
06:09 Now what about the rest of the interior?
06:11 This looks fantastic in my opinion.
06:13 I think what they've done here is gone for design, which is great, but they've also gone
06:17 for function, and I'll explain some of the function bits in a second, but you've got
06:20 your big screens along the top there.
06:22 Over on this side, this is a magnetic pad, so if you want to have pictures of your kids
06:25 or someone else's kids, you can pop them up there if you want.
06:28 And then you can see here with the different tiers they have, it's all soft touch materials.
06:33 There's no real hard and scratchy materials throughout the cabin.
06:36 In fact, some of the materials are actually from recycled things.
06:39 So along the door here, this stuff here is like a recycled bottle.
06:42 The carpets are also recycled.
06:44 So they've put a lot of thought and energy into making this a sort of environmentally
06:49 friendly EV.
06:50 I will point out as well that the drive selector is different too.
06:54 So you basically turn this thing down to go into reverse, up to go into drive, and then
06:58 the park button is on the end of it.
07:00 And then in addition to that, if you do forget what the stop and go pedals are, this one
07:04 is minus and that one has plus on it, so it'll be easier to remember.
07:08 Now, what about all of the touch points?
07:11 So in the centre here, that is not too bad.
07:14 The door is nice as well.
07:15 How soft are they?
07:16 Well, we've got our durometer.
07:18 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
07:20 If you want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before, have a look
07:23 at the link in the description.
07:25 Now what about build quality?
07:26 So that's a little bit wonky, but you can see why, because it's sort of on its own pillar
07:31 there, and this whole thing is movable, which I'll show you later on.
07:35 But the rest of this feels pretty decent in terms of build quality.
07:38 And what about the door?
07:40 So let's have a listen.
07:43 Sounds nice and solid.
07:45 Let's chat infotainment, and I'll run you through the main infotainment screen first,
07:49 and then I'll run you through the one in front of the driver.
07:51 Both of them are 12.3 inches, so big whoppers of a screen.
07:55 And this is what your home screen looks like.
07:57 So typical sort of Hyundai Kia, where you have that main screen with profile selection
08:01 off to the side.
08:02 The difference here is though that you have the EV stuff in the centre there.
08:05 If you swipe across, you're then presented with the rest of those menus.
08:08 Look how quick that is.
08:09 That is a really nice and impressive setup.
08:11 So love the way that looks.
08:13 Now on the sound front, you have AM, FM and DAB+ digital radio, and that's all plumbed
08:18 through an 8-speaker Bose-branded sound system.
08:21 It sounds fantastic.
08:22 It's a really good sound system, and I think if you're into your music, you'll like that.
08:26 There's a subwoofer located in the boot as well that I'll show you later on.
08:30 Have a look at this.
08:31 This is your EV menu.
08:32 I mentioned that a little earlier.
08:33 This is where you can change all of the settings with regards to the car.
08:37 So scheduled departures, also your off-peak charging.
08:40 One interesting thing I noticed though is you can't actually set when you want the off-peak
08:43 charging to go unless you have a scheduled departure set.
08:48 So for example, with my Tesla, I can say I only want it to charge after midnight, because
08:52 that's when my off-peak tariffs are.
08:54 Here I actually have to set a departure time, then I can give it my preference for peak
08:58 and off-peak charging.
08:59 So it's a little bit strange that it does that.
09:01 I would have preferred to just be able to do that without having to schedule the charge.
09:06 Then it also tells you where your nearest charger is.
09:07 So you can see here it's 56 kilometres away.
09:09 It tells you how much range you have left.
09:11 And then you've also got a settings menu for vehicle to load as well, so you can tinker
09:15 with those things if you want.
09:17 Back on the home screen, you also have the other stuff that we've found in Hyundai and
09:20 Kia products, so you've got the voice memo.
09:23 You also have the ability to do quiet mode, so only play music at the front of the car,
09:27 so the kids in the back don't hear anything.
09:30 Smartphone mirroring comes in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
09:33 Both of those are wired, so it's not a wireless system.
09:36 I'll show you what Apple CarPlay looks like.
09:38 Look at that, full screen, and that is mega sharp and very quick as well.
09:43 So that is a great setup.
09:45 It's also got Android Auto.
09:46 You'll notice that it is a split screen instead of being a full screen setup like Apple CarPlay.
09:50 But it is nice and quick as well and transitions without any dramas.
09:54 Let's have a look at the screen ahead of the driver.
09:56 So another 12.3 inch display.
09:58 It's pretty straightforward and I like how simple it is.
10:01 So over on the left you have the speedometer, on the right you have the remaining charge.
10:05 And this all lights up depending on whether you're accelerating or decelerating.
10:10 And then you can also switch between these menus to display different things.
10:13 You can also change the design as well.
10:16 It changes when you go through the different drive modes.
10:19 Let's see that changes when we move through those.
10:22 So really cool setup and it's simplistic, gives you everything that you need.
10:27 And the only thing really that's missing is a head-up display.
10:29 I think that'd be a nice addition up the front there.
10:31 Now what about safety?
10:32 So you have autonomous emergency braking that detects cars, pedestrians and cyclists.
10:37 You have a blind spot monitor built into the wing mirror, but you also have a blind spot
10:41 camera that comes up here while you're driving.
10:43 I'll show you what that looks like when we go out for a spin.
10:45 You have a lane departure warning and a lane keeping assistant.
10:48 It has a self-steering function, but I've said this before with other Hyundai reviews,
10:52 it really doesn't work that well.
10:53 And I think if they're getting into the game of EVs where autonomy seems to be a big thing,
10:57 they probably need to work on that and make it better than it is.
11:00 I just don't have confidence in it and I switch that stuff off while I'm driving.
11:03 You also have radar cruise control there, front and rear cross traffic alert, front
11:08 and rear AEB as well.
11:09 So if you're about to hit something at low speeds when parking, it will stop you.
11:14 Junction assistance so you won't be able to turn in front of an oncoming car.
11:17 Safe exit assistant and also a reminder to check the rear seats if it detects that there's
11:22 occupants back there.
11:23 So a raft of standard safety equipment.
11:25 You get front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
11:29 I'll show you what that looks like.
11:31 That's really good quality actually.
11:32 It's nice and sharp, very easy to see.
11:35 There's your top down view.
11:36 You also have this button here.
11:37 You hit that and you get like this interactive 3D view.
11:40 It's kind of a bit pointless because you can see you can't really make out anything that's
11:44 next to the car.
11:46 But I do like the fact that at the very least this view is very sharp and clear which makes
11:50 reversing a piece of cake.
11:52 So practicality.
11:53 We'll start with connectivity because tech is obviously important here.
11:55 Down the bottom you've got a 12 volt outlet, a USB port.
11:59 Back here you've got another two USB ports and a wireless phone charger.
12:03 And then where are you going to put your phone?
12:04 So you can put it into the wireless charger or all of this stuff down here is gripped.
12:09 Or you can put it in the cup holder.
12:10 There really is just a stack of places to put your phone.
12:13 So they've definitely thought about all of that stuff.
12:16 Coffee cup fits into there without any drama.
12:18 It's very easy to grab and not a problem.
12:20 You're not going to spill it anywhere.
12:22 Bottle holder as well.
12:23 Easily fits into there.
12:24 You've got teeth on that.
12:26 Inside the door fits our small bottle fine.
12:29 Let's try our big bottle.
12:30 See if we can get that in there.
12:32 Yeah, you can actually fit the big bottle in as well.
12:34 So that's pretty cool.
12:36 Other storage.
12:37 You have this thing here.
12:38 So you can lift that, pop your things in there.
12:40 Or you can get rid of that entirely to give you a little bit more room.
12:44 You can pop your things down here.
12:45 You've got storage down here as well.
12:48 And the clever thing is if you do want more room here to put a handbag or something like
12:52 that, this actually moves all the way backwards.
12:54 So you can use this to get out of the car if you need to or to put your odds and ends.
12:58 So that's cool.
13:00 Glove box.
13:01 It's not really, well, it is actually a glove box in the sense that it is a box.
13:04 Watch.
13:05 You pull that out and you have a bin where you can put all your things.
13:08 And that is a great idea.
13:09 I don't understand why more manufacturers don't do that because it makes perfect sense
13:13 when you think about it.
13:15 And your comfort.
13:16 How are you going to keep yourself nice and cool or warm?
13:19 Well, you've got dual zone automatic climate control up the front here.
13:22 In addition to that, you also have the ability to only have cooling on for the driver.
13:27 So that means it's going to save energy and all that kind of thing.
13:31 And if you then have other people inside the car, you can press a button to then expand
13:35 that around the cabin.
13:36 You then have heated and cooled seats for the front row.
13:40 You adjust those using a shortcut button down here and then all of the controls on the screen.
13:45 You have a heated steering wheel.
13:47 The seats themselves, so they're perforated for the cooling, but I love the design.
13:51 So you can see here that squared layout at the top there.
13:53 You've got a couple of divots there as well.
13:56 Seats are really comfy too.
13:57 So I've spent a bit of time in this car and they just hug you in nicely and they just
14:00 create a nice and inviting driving experience which is important for a car like this.
14:05 Now what about adjusting the seats?
14:07 There's something interesting here.
14:08 You have 12-way electric seat adjustment for the driver and front passenger.
14:12 But the interesting thing is to aid in convenience when it comes to charging, you can actually
14:17 fully recline both of these seats to relax.
14:20 Let me demonstrate.
14:21 So you push and hold this button just here and it will then throw you back all the way.
14:30 Put your leg rest out.
14:31 I'll tell you what, this is actually a really comfy place to be seated.
14:35 So while the car's charging, you just kick back and relax, wait for it to do its thing
14:39 and then when you're ready to go home, you push the same buttons again and then away
14:44 you go.
14:45 You are returned to your driving position and ready to hit the road again.
14:48 Once you're done faffing about with your seat, you'll notice there are buttons here on the
14:51 side.
14:52 We have seen these in other Hyundais before and they allow the rear passengers to move
14:56 this seat forwards and backwards, but they serve a different purpose this time around.
14:59 You can actually move the second row forwards and backwards to give yourself more boot space.
15:04 So this is for situations where you're picking someone up, they need a bit more boot space,
15:08 there's no one in the second row.
15:09 You can do that all from here without having to really get out of the car.
15:13 So really cool setup.
15:14 The steering wheel is manually adjustable.
15:16 It does tilt and reach.
15:18 And then on the reach test, this stuff's okay, but as you get to the edge, the controls are
15:23 a little harder to reach and definitely the controls here on the infotainment system are
15:27 hard to reach.
15:28 I tried changing the station this morning while I was driving and I literally had to
15:31 lean in and then go to the station list up the top.
15:34 So a little bit fiddly and I don't know how they fix that, whether they tilt the screen
15:38 a little bit or something, but yeah, it is just a little out of reach.
15:41 So second row, look at this, I have heaps of room here.
15:44 So tons of knee room.
15:46 Toe room isn't great.
15:48 My toes are kind of wedged under that seat there, but headroom is pretty reasonable and
15:52 that's even with this giant panoramic glass roof.
15:56 I love the look of that.
15:57 I love the cover that closes over it as well.
15:58 So other creature comforts back here, you've got a shade to keep prying eyes out.
16:03 You've got your controls for the heated seats for the second row here.
16:06 The two outboard seats are heated.
16:08 Two USB ports down here, a little bit of storage, mat pockets.
16:12 You have a centre armrest with two cup holders so your bottle can fit in there.
16:16 You also have bottle storage inside the doors as well.
16:20 Have a look at this though.
16:21 So you have electric adjustment for these seats.
16:23 You can move these independently of each other electrically and then you can manually recline
16:28 as well if you want to give yourself a bit more room in the boot or even to kick back
16:31 and have a bit of a kipper.
16:33 Air vents are located just here on the side as well.
16:36 So really nice and pleasant environment and it follows the rest of the interior in terms
16:41 of the design.
16:42 So what is cargo space like given that it is sort of fairly big?
16:45 Crack this open.
16:48 So power tailgate.
16:50 You have a little over 500 litres of cargo space here in its standard trim.
16:54 Beneath the cargo floor you've also got a little bit of extra storage.
16:58 Tyre mobility kit.
17:00 Subwoofer is under there.
17:01 You've also got hooks off to the side here.
17:04 You have a 12 volt outlet.
17:06 Let's see what it looks like with our bags in because to be honest the space isn't, I
17:10 don't know if it's actually that usable.
17:12 If I put this in here, it fits our suitcase fine but it doesn't go very high.
17:18 I'm just sort of picturing in my mind the issues I have at the moment with our Model
17:21 3 which is getting the pram in.
17:23 The pram sort of fits in but you can't really get anything around it.
17:26 I don't even know if our pram would fit in here.
17:29 It would but then you would still have no extra room and this stuff under here isn't
17:33 really a usable space either.
17:34 So I don't know how practical this is.
17:37 I will be testing this against my Model 3 so keep an eye on my social media.
17:41 I'll put some pictures up and stuff like that so you can actually get a visual representation
17:45 of what it all looks like.
17:46 You can expand the space though if you don't need to have passengers in the second row.
17:51 You can't drop the seats from the boot which is a little bit annoying.
17:54 You've got to go do it all manually but once you do that you have a space that expands
18:02 to 1600 litres.
18:04 Being an EV you've also got storage under the front here.
18:07 It is just under 30 litres and it sits under a cover that says EV.
18:12 Obviously.
18:13 It is not the most usable storage space in the world as you can tell.
18:16 It's basically enough room for your cable.
18:17 But I'm going to take this with me and I'll run you through some of the charging options
18:22 around the side here.
18:23 Now this is where you charge the car.
18:25 You can open that slot just by pushing and holding this on the key and it pops out like
18:30 that.
18:31 So I'll run you through the charging options first.
18:33 You have both AC and DC charging.
18:36 AC uses a three phase on board AC charger.
18:40 This will do up to around 11 kilowatts which is excellent.
18:43 Model 3 for example will only do single phase.
18:45 It's not capable of charging that fast.
18:47 In terms of DC this actually trumps everything on the market at the moment because it will
18:51 do 800 volts at up to 350 kilowatts.
18:54 So the car is currently capped at around 230-240 but I suspect they'll be able to ramp that
18:59 up as infrastructure changes and that's all via a Type 2 and a CCS Type 2 combo plug.
19:06 Let me know, do you want me to do a video explaining what the different plugs are and
19:10 what they mean and all that kind of stuff because to me it makes perfect sense but I
19:12 think to a lot of people who don't know EVs perhaps the stuff that I'm talking about is
19:15 just gobbledygook.
19:16 So let me know in the comments section below.
19:19 This lights up depending on what the car is doing.
19:21 Again you can see that cubed theme there.
19:23 The car will also talk to you when you charge which I find really fascinating.
19:28 Now this thing, I promised to show you this.
19:30 This may look like a really strange contraption but this is how you do vehicle to load.
19:35 So let me show you how it works.
19:36 You take that end off, that plugs into here.
19:39 Then this end features a power plug.
19:42 What this allows you to do is at up to around 3.6 kilowatts I think it is, you're able to
19:47 run devices off your car.
19:49 So if you're out camping for example you could run a fridge, an oven or you know whatever
19:54 camping related things you take with you all powered by the car and I think this is fantastic.
19:59 I think more EVs should have this and certainly when EV utes come, traders are going to love
20:04 this.
20:05 Can you imagine rocking up to a work site with your ute, the work site doesn't have
20:08 any power on it and just running a power board off your car with 3.6 kilowatts like that
20:12 is huge and to put that into context, something like a Ford Ranger, it has an outlet that
20:16 will do 150 watts.
20:19 This is 3600 watts so you can really run something like a literally domestic home air conditioner
20:25 off this.
20:26 That's how much grunt it has.
20:27 So love this and I love the fact that it comes standard with the iON 5.
20:33 We've hit the road in the iONIQ 5.
20:35 So there's a bit to get through here so I will include as much information as I can.
20:40 It may be a little bit confusing but head to our website carexpert.com.au if you want
20:44 just a bit more explanation on what all this stuff means.
20:47 So I mentioned in the intro that the iONIQ 5 is available in two variants in Australia.
20:52 You've got the two-wheel drive and you have the all-wheel drive.
20:54 This one here is the all-wheel drive which means you have one electric motor at the front
20:58 and one electric motor at the rear.
21:00 It produces a combined power output of 225 kilowatts of power and 605 newton metres of
21:07 torque.
21:08 Unlike something like the Porsche Taycan, this has a single speed transmission so you
21:11 won't feel any stepped gear changes as you go through the range.
21:16 Like all EVs, it's quiet here at the moment.
21:18 At low speed you do get the external pedestrian sound.
21:21 So I'll slow down so you can hear that.
21:23 It's like a bit of a humming sound to let pedestrians know that you're coming and then
21:31 that disappears as you start accelerating.
21:33 What's it like behind the wheel?
21:34 Well, just in your standard drive mode here, it's actually just really pleasant and you
21:38 can accelerate hard if you need to, it pins you back in the seat, it does all that fun
21:42 EV stuff.
21:44 You can then also adjust your regen modes as you drive.
21:47 The regen modes are of course the modes that regenerate electricity from the car's kinetic
21:53 energy and plumbing it back into the batteries and you can change the amount of deceleration
21:57 you feel.
21:58 So using the paddle shifters here, for example, I can go all the way up to the top where I
22:01 get zero and that's just me off the throttle now, the car just coasts.
22:05 I can go down to level one, level two or level three.
22:09 Now all that's fairly good except you'll notice here in level three it slows down but
22:13 doesn't come to a full stop.
22:14 One of the things I've always complained about in a lot of these EVs is they don't have the
22:18 system you'll find in the Nissan LEAF and also the Tesla range where it'll basically
22:23 allow you to drive with one foot operation so you don't really touch the brake pedal.
22:27 Well, Hyundai has listened and if you pull this once more it goes into I-pedal mode and
22:32 if I roll out of the throttle it will come to a complete stop and I tell you what, this
22:37 is absolutely seamless.
22:39 This feels exactly like my Tesla does which I think is the benchmark in this segment.
22:44 This even feels better than the Nissan LEAF which I guess has been doing this for longer
22:48 in terms of that technology so really impressed with that and glad that they've fitted it
22:51 to the IONIQ 5.
22:53 Those electric motors are attached to a battery that's around 72 kilowatt hours in size.
22:58 That battery is around the same size as something like a Tesla Model 3 just as a reference and
23:03 that means that you are getting a similar amount of range.
23:06 Hyundai claims a driving range of around 430 kilometres.
23:09 The good thing with Hyundai though is when you charge the car to 100% it will show you
23:14 almost exactly that range.
23:15 I find with my Tesla for example if it goes to 100% it will show me a range of 460km or
23:20 something but it drops away quicker than the kilometres that you cover whereas this is
23:24 far more realistic and you know that when I see here it says 259km that it is going
23:29 to achieve 259km more driving.
23:33 Let's talk about economy.
23:34 So Hyundai claims 19 kilowatt hours per 100km.
23:38 Just as a quick reference that is how much power or energy you're using from that battery
23:43 over 100km.
23:44 So it's a 72.6 kilowatt hour battery.
23:47 That means you're using 19 kilowatt hours every 100km.
23:51 Let's see how we've gone there in terms of that number if I flick through the menu here.
23:56 Currently sitting on 20.2 so it's pretty much bang on exactly where it needs to be.
24:00 Again I'm just going to reference my Tesla here because I own it, I've lived with it.
24:03 That is higher than what I see in my Tesla but keep in mind we have been doing a little
24:07 bit of sporty driving here and predominantly highway driving from home to this location
24:11 for filming.
24:12 Let's talk drive mode.
24:13 You can click them using this button here on the wheel.
24:15 It's pretty straightforward.
24:16 You just have sport, eco and normal and you'll see the display changes there depending on
24:21 which mode you choose.
24:22 You don't have adaptive damping so it is just a fixed rate system and that means that you
24:27 are getting I guess no real customisability as you go into sport mode.
24:31 The steering does become heavier, the throttle becomes sharper but nothing else really happens.
24:35 But let's go for a bit of a punt here in sport mode.
24:38 Let's see what it feels like.
24:40 So the acceleration is great.
24:41 I mean it is EV like there which is good.
24:45 Power on through this corner.
24:48 Look the punchiness is great.
24:50 What I am noticing though with this wheelbase, it is a big wheelbase and it feels as you
24:56 go through corners that it's sort of a bit floaty and all over the place.
25:00 As we hit this section here where it causes the car to jump around, it's not super confidence
25:05 inspiring.
25:06 There's plenty of traction thanks to those Michelin Pilot Sport tyres but I just don't
25:12 feel confident really pushing it that hard.
25:15 You really hit some of these mid-corner bumps and the car just sort of shuffles along a
25:19 little bit.
25:20 It is worth pointing out that this is another car that Hyundai here in Australia didn't
25:24 have any involvement in tuning and you can kind of see, I think if Hyundai did have involvement
25:29 in tuning this, they'd probably go for a slightly firmer ride to take advantage of this chassis
25:33 which I think is a perfectly capable chassis.
25:35 It just doesn't feel all that confidence inspiring once you push on.
25:38 It's going to be fine for most people but if you are wanting to go for a sporty drive,
25:42 it's just not quite there yet.
25:45 There is an N version of this car coming in 2024 but I think before it does, they're going
25:49 to have to really fine tune the way this handles.
25:53 Hyundai claims a 0-100 time of 5.2 seconds.
25:57 This is how it went up against our stopwatch.
25:59 Let's talk about the ride in general though.
26:08 I'm going to slip this back into normal mode.
26:10 I'm going to push this up to 130 which is the speed limit in Australia or the highest
26:15 speed limit and then we've got a set of undulations here that sort of mimic a country road.
26:20 This sort of carries on what I was mentioning earlier about the body control.
26:24 As the speed picks up, this is kind of all over the place and it really sort of lacks
26:30 that finite control at the top end where you're going to find on a country road if you do
26:34 hit a bump, it will feel like it's staying in the air longer than it needs to.
26:38 So look, it's not the end of the world, it's just if you - again I'm doing this comparison
26:42 and I'm sorry but I just know what my car's like and my car feels a whole lot more resolved
26:47 around here.
26:48 We had it here a couple of weeks ago and it's far more sporty to drive.
26:52 This very much feels far softer than it does sportier.
26:56 Now what's the quietness like?
26:58 Often with EVs because you don't have engine noise coming into the cabin, you do get a
27:01 whole lot of other noises that infiltrate in.
27:04 You do hear a little bit of the electric motors as you accelerate so I like that noise because
27:09 it kind of sounds futuristic and sort of gives you an idea of what's going on.
27:14 There is a bit of tyre noise as well.
27:15 You've got 20-inch alloy wheels there and as you hit the coarse chip sections of road,
27:19 you do notice a lot of that coming into the cabin.
27:21 I have noticed that with other EVs as well.
27:23 I don't know whether it's that they lack insulation, especially with Tesla products.
27:28 This glass roof, it seems to just let in a whole lot more noise than you would normally
27:32 expect.
27:33 So it is good but it's not amazing in terms of sound insulation.
27:37 And what about visibility?
27:38 So it's great.
27:39 I feel like I'm in a commanding driving position here without feeling like I'm in an SUV.
27:44 So I can clearly see down the front there, the wing mirrors are reasonably sized.
27:47 They're not huge, they could be potentially a touch bigger but you do get the blind spot
27:51 monitor built into those and my favourite feature in Hyundai and Kia products when you
27:55 put the indicator on, you get the camera there on both sides.
27:59 So you're probably not going to be doing any towing but if you do, 1600 kilogram brake
28:03 towing capacity.
28:04 We have a turning circle of just under 12 metres which is pretty big and quite surprising
28:09 when you consider you don't have, you know, it's not like an all-wheel drive where you
28:13 have all these components down the front there.
28:15 So I'm surprised that the turning circle is so big.
28:18 The steering feel is great so at low speeds when you're parking, it's just so light and
28:22 easy to manoeuvre.
28:23 And finally, 160 millimetres of ground clearance so you will definitely not be doing any off-road
28:28 driving and it's sort of fairly close to the ground at 160 mil.
28:35 So the Hyundai IONIQ 5, I was really surprised by this.
28:38 I think it is fantastic in most ways and I'm going to caveat that by saying I think it
28:43 is let down a little bit by the boot.
28:45 It's not really a usable space and I also think as the speeds pick up, it just doesn't
28:50 have body control and I think that's something Hyundai needs to work on because ultimately,
28:54 look at it, it does look sporty and it is fairly quick in that sense.
28:58 It just doesn't feel confidence-inspiring as the speeds pick up, especially just for
29:03 the average punter.
29:04 So they're the things that disappointed me.
29:06 What I liked about it though, I love the interior, the layout is beautiful, they've done an excellent
29:10 job in creating space inside the cabin and just in and around the city, it really just
29:16 works.
29:17 It looks fantastic as well and it doesn't look like a science project.
29:19 So there are your pros and cons.
29:21 I mentioned in a couple of my other videos that I'm looking for a bigger car.
29:25 My wife mainly drives the Model 3 but it's not big enough for the pram and all the stuff
29:28 that we have in it and I thought this would be the car that we buy.
29:31 So I'm going to hang out and wait for the Kia EV6 or see if that's any better as a performance
29:35 car but if performance isn't all that important to you, I think this thing is fantastic and
29:39 I'm really keen to see of all the people that are watching this, have you placed an order?
29:43 Because I know the order banks are already full in Australia.
29:46 Let me know what spec you've gone for, the colour and all that sort of stuff down in
29:49 the comments section below and if you're watching this overseas and you've already bought one,
29:52 what's it like to live with?
29:54 Let me know what your thoughts are.
29:55 I'm hanging out for the N version of this as well in a couple of years' time.
29:58 So if you did enjoy this video, please make sure you share it with your mates and also
30:01 hit the like button and if you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel and press
30:05 the bell icon.
30:06 But until next time, see you later.
