We have spied the 2021 Hyundai i30 N with dual-clutch transmission! Hyundai is soon to launch the new 2021 Hyundai i30 N, which is set to come with the option of an eight-speed wet clutch dual-clutch system in addition to a six-speed manual. We have been sent footage of the 2021 Hyundai i30 N testing in Australia and wanted to compare the exhaust sound to the current i30 N.
Paul Maric will also take you through the wet clutch eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox and explain how it differs from a dry clutch transmission and some of the features that will come with the gearbox. Do you think the sound is good enough for an N product?

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So, I love kimchi, but the only thing I love more
00:03 than kimchi is the Hyundai i30 N.
00:06 It is such a fun little hot hatch to drive.
00:08 It cracks, it pops, does everything that a hot hatch
00:11 should do in this day and age.
00:13 That is why I am super excited to show you guys
00:15 some footage that we were sent in
00:17 of the new Hyundai i30 N with a dual clutch transmission.
00:22 Where did this footage come from?
00:25 Well, this is from one of our eagle-eyed followers in Sydney,
00:29 Hyundai Australia is testing the i30 N in Australia
00:32 with the dual clutch transmission,
00:34 and we have snapped images and video of the fastback,
00:38 which is kind of a sedan hatch type,
00:41 not really a hatch, but not really a sedan.
00:43 It's like a mix between the two.
00:45 I actually think it looks a little bit like
00:46 an AU Falcon at the back, but anyway, let's not go there.
00:48 Why is it in Australia?
00:50 Why are we getting these cars so early?
00:51 Well, Hyundai Australia is in a unique position
00:54 because it does a lot of ride and handling tuning
00:56 right here in Australia for the Australian market.
00:59 Some of the tunes that the guys here in Australia do
01:01 are then exported to other markets as well.
01:03 They've been really successful in creating a custom
01:06 and bespoke ride and handling tune that suits our market
01:08 and then can be sent abroad,
01:10 and that is why they get the car so early.
01:12 They wanna make sure that it's ready to rumble
01:13 before the dual clutch version of the i30 N goes on sale.
01:17 And why does it have so much camouflage?
01:19 Well, that is because there is a slight styling change
01:21 coming to this car.
01:22 Now, if you look really closely at the back of this car,
01:25 you'll see bigger exhaust pipes.
01:27 So the updated version of the i30 N hatch
01:29 and fastback will get the same size exhaust outlets
01:32 as the Veloster N that was recently revealed.
01:35 So that should make it look a little more aggressive
01:37 at the rear.
01:38 It's also going to get a new wheel design.
01:39 So if you look closely at those wheels,
01:41 you can see there's a slightly different design there.
01:43 And keep in mind as well that the rest of it will flow
01:45 very much in the same way that the i30 N line hatch has.
01:50 So it's gonna have a few sharper angles,
01:51 a different set of headlights,
01:52 and also a bit more LED lighting around the rear.
01:56 You can actually see a render that we have here
01:58 of what the i30 N is likely to look like
02:00 when it is launched.
02:01 I think it is a pretty sharp looking car
02:03 and I hope they retain that baby blue color.
02:05 I think that looks fantastic
02:06 and really makes the i30 N stand out on the road.
02:08 Under the bonnet, it's going to retain the same
02:10 cracking two liter turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine
02:14 that will drive the front wheels.
02:16 Yes, Hyundai is working on what looks to be
02:18 like a mid-engined all wheel drive supercar type thing.
02:22 This isn't that.
02:23 This is simply going to be the same carryover engine.
02:26 It produces 202 kilowatts of power
02:28 and 353 newton meters of torque.
02:30 It also has an over boost feature that cranks that up
02:32 to 378 newton meters for up to 20 seconds.
02:36 Now, what about the noise?
02:37 I think this is the bit that everyone's been waiting for.
02:39 Will it sound like a golf GTI
02:41 where it sort of cracks and pops through the gears
02:43 and will it still have that trademark burble
02:46 and I don't know, I guess the gunshot noises
02:49 that the i30 N currently has.
02:51 We'll have a listen to this
02:52 as the car drives past the camera.
02:55 (car engine roaring)
02:58 Yes, there is no cracking and popping there.
03:07 So based on the information we have,
03:09 we believe this is a European specification car
03:13 which means it will be fitted
03:14 with a petrol particulate filter.
03:16 The good news is that we don't have
03:18 very strict emissions laws in Australia.
03:20 So it is highly likely that the car that we get in Australia
03:22 won't have a petrol particulate filter.
03:25 So it means that it should still have
03:26 that signature crack and pop.
03:28 But I bet you're wondering,
03:29 what does it sound like compared to the current i30 N?
03:31 Well, here is the i30 N Fastback going around a track.
03:35 This is the manual version that's sold in Australia
03:37 without a particulate filter.
03:38 Have a listen to it.
03:39 (car engine roaring)
03:52 Big difference there, isn't it?
03:53 You can really hear the cracks, the pops,
03:55 and all the emotion from the manual version.
03:58 Now, when do we expect to see this car in Australia
04:01 or the rest of the world for that matter?
04:02 Well, it was actually meant to be revealed
04:04 at the end of 2019, but due to a whole bunch of delays,
04:07 we won't be seeing the car here in Australia
04:09 until early 2021.
04:11 So you're gonna have to wait just a little bit longer
04:13 before we get our hands on a dual clutch version
04:15 of the i30 N.
04:16 Okay, let's have a chat
04:17 about the actual dual clutch transmission
04:19 and what you can expect from it.
04:21 Now, a bit of background here.
04:22 Albert Biermann, he's a man that likes his beer, I've heard.
04:25 He is from BMW's M division.
04:27 He worked there for over a decade
04:28 and he was poached by the guys at Hyundai
04:31 to come across and hone the N division.
04:33 He actually worked briefly on the Kia Stinger
04:35 before it was launched and has been fully involved
04:38 in the i30 N.
04:39 He actually said, "We're not going to release this car
04:41 if the dual clutch isn't good,"
04:43 which is the reason this car has been out
04:44 for such a long time without a dual clutch.
04:46 Hyundai only had, I mean, what I think
04:49 is a pretty poor dual clutch available to them
04:51 and it just didn't really work
04:52 in this performance application.
04:53 So he rightfully waited, I'm glad they did,
04:55 instead of releasing a version of this car
04:57 that was just going to be disappointing.
04:59 Now, what about the gearbox
05:00 that's actually fitted to the i30 N?
05:01 Well, it's an eight speed wet clutch,
05:04 dual clutch transmission.
05:05 What is the difference between a wet clutch
05:07 and a dry clutch?
05:08 Well, a dry clutch is often used in entry-level cars,
05:11 small SUVs, city cars, that kind of thing.
05:13 They can overheat a little bit more
05:15 because you don't actually have that oil submersion
05:18 of the clutch.
05:19 And that means that in small SUVs and city cars,
05:21 if you do sit them on hills
05:22 or put a lot of load on them without the car moving,
05:25 they tend to just be a little bit funny and not very nice.
05:28 So that's why Hyundai has gone down the path
05:29 of a wet clutch setup.
05:31 Now, according to Hyundai, a wet clutch is submersed in oil
05:34 and it means that it reduces operating temperature
05:36 'cause you're using that oil to disperse the heat energy
05:39 and it's improving lubrication as well,
05:41 which in theory should improve shift quality.
05:43 And it also means that at low speed,
05:45 it shouldn't be as jarring.
05:46 With some of these dry clutch setups,
05:48 they're kind of on-off, there's no in-between,
05:51 and that's where you strike a balance with a wet clutch.
05:53 It kind of gives you that smoothness as it takes off.
05:55 Now, some of the special features
05:57 that are being fitted to this dual-clutch transmission
05:59 from Hyundai, this is marketing lingo, not my words,
06:02 so I'm sorry if it sounds a bit silly.
06:04 N-GrinShift, that is basically a 20-second period
06:09 where you can have overboost, which increases torque by 7%.
06:12 I don't know why they had to give it such a silly name.
06:14 N-PowerShift, another curiously named technology.
06:18 It engages when throttle position is at 90% or higher.
06:21 Now, Hyundai didn't really explain what this means,
06:24 but according to them, it improves shift speeds
06:26 by maintaining torque delivery.
06:29 I guess that just means it shifts a little bit quicker
06:31 and keeps you moving, perhaps, I don't really know.
06:34 Finally, N-TrackSenseShift.
06:37 Now, this is probably going to win an award
06:39 for marketing spin of the year.
06:41 It's effectively a sport mode, but according to Hyundai,
06:44 it selects the right gear and shift timing,
06:46 just like a professional race car driver,
06:49 to provide optimal performance.
06:51 Gee, that sounds like fun.
06:52 So there is some really interesting marketing lingo there,
06:55 but for the most part, it sounds like
06:56 they've actually spent a bit of time
06:58 engineering this gearbox so it works properly.
07:00 Okay, so what do I think about all this?
07:02 Well, to begin with, I think they should give the i30 N
07:04 the performance kick it needs to compete
07:07 with stuff like the Golf GTI.
07:08 You've got to remember that there is a brand new Golf GTI
07:10 coming, which will be a whole lot sharper
07:12 than the current one, and the current one
07:13 has been out for a long time
07:14 and is still incredibly fun to drive.
07:16 The key thing that Hyundai's been missing
07:18 is an automatic transmission,
07:19 and this should really seal the deal.
07:21 Where it won't work is if they've done
07:23 what Ford has done with the Focus ST.
07:25 They kind of just rushed through a gearbox
07:27 and just stuck it in a car,
07:28 and it really isn't that impressive.
07:30 I'm hoping that Hyundai has spent enough time on this
07:33 to make it good, and I think with guys like Albert Biermann
07:35 from the BMW M division, he knows exactly
07:38 what he's doing here, and I don't think he would let
07:40 a shitty gearbox get through the mix and into this car
07:44 if it wasn't approved by him.
07:46 I really hope as well that it has all the performance
07:48 characteristics of the manual.
07:50 When you're in the chequered flag mode, that N mode,
07:52 it cracks, it pops, it is just such a fun car to drive,
07:57 and there is not one i30 N that I've driven
07:59 that hasn't put a smile on my face every single time
08:01 it makes all those crazy sounds.
08:02 So the automatic version of this with the dual clutch
08:05 really needs to meet the brief there for it to hold up
08:09 to that image that everyone is expecting here.
08:11 The buyers that have bought the manuals
08:12 know what it sounds like, they know what to expect from it,
08:15 and I think if they're going to go and tell all their friends
08:17 about there now being an automatic version,
08:19 you need to win these people over.
08:20 You can't just release a gearbox that isn't fit for purpose
08:23 and doesn't have all of the sounds that people want
08:26 from a hot hatch today.
08:27 Remember, hot hatches are bought by people
08:29 who may not have the money for a high-end sports car
08:32 or don't want a high-end sports car.
08:33 They want a car that they can drive to work every day,
08:35 and this is going to fit the bill if they can get it right
08:38 in terms of the gearbox.
08:39 The suspension's good on this car,
08:40 everything else is nicely rounded,
08:42 just make sure the gearbox is right.
08:43 Okay, so before we wrap this one up,
08:45 I just want to run you through some of the gear
08:46 that Hyundai has coming up.
08:49 So N, N is the division that does all the performance cars,
08:52 but Hyundai has now launched the N line,
08:54 which is kind of like, I don't know,
08:55 the S line or the R line that Volkswagen does.
08:58 It's effectively sporty-looking cars
09:00 that aren't really as sporty
09:02 as the proper fully-fledged N version,
09:04 and Hyundai has a few of those coming up.
09:06 So they've just released the i30 N line sedan,
09:10 and that is the car you're seeing on the screen right now.
09:12 I think it looks fantastic.
09:13 They've got so many cool angles here.
09:15 This is also known as the Elantra in other markets,
09:17 but for Australia, it will be the i30 sedan,
09:19 and it will be offered with an N line.
09:21 This will be powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged
09:23 petrol engine and an optional manual as well,
09:25 so that should be really good to drive.
09:27 Later on, we're going to see the Sonata N line.
09:30 So the Sonata is the bigger sedan,
09:32 but it's used by some police forces,
09:33 and the N line will bring with it those sharp N looks,
09:36 but obviously without the N performance.
09:38 Then early next year, we have the i30 N,
09:40 the proper N coming with this dual-clutch transmission.
09:43 There's also rumours that Hyundai
09:44 is going to be rolling out N versions
09:45 of other cars in their range, such as the Tucson.
09:48 I don't mind seeing a Santa Fe N.
09:50 Now, they did a drift bus in Australia,
09:52 which I thought was pretty cool.
09:53 That was powered by a turbo V6,
09:55 and it was an absolute drift machine.
09:57 So they're heading down the right path.
09:59 They have some really creative ideas,
10:01 and I'm excited to see what the future holds for Hyundai,
10:04 especially this dual-clutch transmission.
10:05 So if you did enjoy this video,
10:07 I'd love it if you could share it.
10:08 Hit the like button as well.
