The 2022 Ford Ranger and Everest (Endeavour) are going hybrid in their quest to take down the all-conquering Toyota HiLux and Fortuner.

Confidential plans about the 2022 Ford Ranger and Everest have leaked ahead of a drip-feed of information about the new models, which kicks off later this year.

The plans, exclusively obtained by CarExpert, detail the range of drivetrains and offer a breakdown of next-generation Ranger and Everest models to be offered by Ford, including plug-in hybrid variants of both the dual-cab ute and off-road SUV.

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 Recently, we published an exclusive story
00:03 on the 2022 Ford Ranger and the Ford Everest,
00:06 or the Ford Endeavour, as it's known.
00:08 The story was really well received,
00:09 and I know that because it was shared a lot
00:11 and copied a lot.
00:12 But some of you asked why we didn't do a video on it.
00:15 Well, we kind of asked ourselves the same question,
00:17 so let's get into it.
00:18 Let's kick things off.
00:19 Where is this information from?
00:22 Well, I can't tell you my source
00:23 because I'd have to kill you.
00:24 Just kidding, I'm not going to kill you,
00:26 but I've got two confidential sources,
00:27 and both of them have intimate knowledge of the design
00:31 and also the future engine lineup.
00:33 And I use both of those sources
00:34 to put all of this information together.
00:36 This is all correct as it stands right now.
00:39 This may change between now and 2022/2023
00:43 when these cars are released,
00:44 but as it stands right now, this is the information.
00:47 It's all accurate.
00:48 That's all I can say without killing you.
00:50 Let's run through what we know.
00:51 We're going to start with the engines,
00:52 and the 3.2 litre five-cylinder diesel engine is gone.
00:56 That's going to be killed at the end
00:57 of this current generation of Ranger and Everest/Endeavour.
01:01 They've had a good run with it.
01:02 It came out with the T6,
01:04 and it's been used both across the Mazda BT50
01:06 and the Ford Ranger,
01:07 and it's still currently the standard engine
01:09 that's available.
01:10 Instead, Ford's going to be moving to a two litre diesel.
01:12 It's a four-cylinder twin turbocharged diesel engine.
01:16 All of the engines that you're about to hear
01:17 will use a 10-speed automatic transmission.
01:20 This is the transmission that's been co-developed
01:21 between Ford and GM.
01:23 It's used in a number of Ford products globally,
01:25 and it's also currently in use
01:27 with that two litre diesel engine.
01:28 The 10-speed auto has proven to be pretty good so far,
01:31 but Ford did, as we record this,
01:33 just release a recall for about 20,000 cars
01:36 with issues with that 10-speed automatic
01:38 that they're currently working through.
01:40 And do let us know in the comments below,
01:41 have you got a Ranger or an Everest
01:43 that has had problems with that 10-speed automatic?
01:46 We're quite keen to hear from customers
01:48 who are either part of that recall
01:49 or have had other dramas with their 10-speed automatic.
01:51 The two litre diesel makes 157 kilowatts of power
01:54 and 500 newton metres of torque.
01:57 We've driven Rangers and Everest with this engine before.
01:59 It's a really good, hearty engine.
02:01 It's good for towing,
02:02 and given that it's a twin turbo diesel,
02:04 you get a lot of torque down low from the first turbo,
02:06 and then more torque at the top end from the second one.
02:08 The big news for both Everest and Ranger
02:10 is that a three litre V6 diesel is coming.
02:13 This is a turbocharged V6 diesel.
02:15 It was released in the F-150 last year,
02:18 and it's a pretty decent engine.
02:19 It's gonna give both the Ranger and the Everest
02:21 a big kick in the pants.
02:22 It produces 190 kilowatts of power
02:25 and get this 600 newton metres of torque.
02:28 So that's gonna give these cars some serious grunt,
02:30 and it's gonna mean when you tow things
02:31 closer to the end of that 3,500 kilogram
02:34 brake towing capacity,
02:36 that it's gonna feel a whole lot more effortless.
02:37 When we've tested the Amarok before
02:39 with the four cylinder versus the V6,
02:41 you just feel like you're towing less of a load
02:43 with the V6.
02:44 You're not having to get a run up to overtake other cars.
02:47 So a V6 diesel is going to be very welcome
02:49 to both the Ranger and the Everest
02:51 when it finally does come out.
02:52 The biggest news though is that plug-in hybrid
02:55 is coming to both Ranger and Everest.
02:58 Now this technology is extremely important for Ford
03:00 because as companies move towards a greener image,
03:03 a lot of big fleets, councils, government agencies,
03:05 they all want to bring their CO2 levels down,
03:08 become carbon neutral wherever they can.
03:10 They're going to go down the path of opting
03:11 for these plug-in hybrid cars
03:13 'cause they get free driving range with electricity,
03:15 and then also a reduced driving range
03:17 with that hybrid drivetrain
03:18 as the plug-in hybrid capacity runs out.
03:21 Plug-in hybrid of course uses a battery pack
03:23 that sits beneath the car.
03:24 It gives you around 60 to 100 kilometres
03:26 of pure electric driving range.
03:27 Outside of that, it's all then a hybrid system
03:30 that helps it get along and save fuel.
03:31 Terms of the engine, it is a 2.3 litre turbocharged
03:35 four cylinder EcoBoost engine,
03:36 and it's going to produce 270 kilowatts of power
03:40 and 680 newton metres of torque.
03:43 This engine hasn't been used anywhere else
03:44 in the Ford range before.
03:46 So as far as we can tell, the Ranger and the Everest
03:48 will be the first two cars in the Ford family
03:50 to get this plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
03:52 And it also means that the car will be extremely efficient.
03:54 That should mean around three litres per 100 kilometres
03:58 in fuel economy.
03:59 Now, before we jump into the pictures,
04:00 I want to run you through just a little bit of background
04:02 between Ford and Volkswagen.
04:04 They struck up a partnership recently
04:06 that means that Volkswagen is going to develop
04:07 a city-sized van like the next generation of Caddy.
04:10 So that will wear a Ford badge and a Volkswagen badge.
04:13 And Ford is doing development
04:14 of a dual cab commercial vehicle and also a large van.
04:18 So that means that the Ford Ranger
04:20 will also be a Volkswagen Amarok.
04:22 They're likely to share the same engines.
04:24 They'll just have different badges
04:25 and a slightly different design.
04:26 The platform that both the Ranger and the Amarok
04:28 are going to share is a modified version of the T6 platform.
04:32 T6 platform was originally developed here in Australia
04:34 through Ford's Asia Pacific division,
04:36 and it born the Ford Ranger and also the BT50.
04:40 Since then, the Ford Ranger has been updated
04:41 to add things like electric power assisted steering.
04:44 And they also developed a slightly different platform
04:45 for the Ranger that's used in the US
04:47 along with the Raptor as well.
04:49 So it will be that platform with a few modifications
04:51 that will generate the next generation of the Ford Ranger,
04:54 the Ford Everest/Endeavour, and the Volkswagen Amarok.
04:56 So there are all the facts that we've been able
04:57 to put together from our confidential sources.
04:59 If you want to see more detail,
05:00 because there is a stack more detail,
05:02 you can use the link in the description,
05:04 which will take you to carexpert.com.au
05:06 where we have that news story.
05:07 But now let's get into the design
05:09 and see what both of these are gonna look like.
05:11 These are computer generated images.
05:12 They've taken information from our confidential sources
05:15 plus images already on the internet,
05:16 and we've given them to our designer
05:18 to come up with this design.
05:19 And I'll tell you what, I absolutely love the look of it.
05:22 What you're seeing here is the Ford Ranger in Wildtrak trim.
05:25 That's right up at the top, just beneath the Raptor.
05:27 It has a really aggressive front end on it
05:29 that's been derived from the new F-150.
05:32 You can see around the outer rim there,
05:33 LED daytime running lights, and also LED headlights.
05:37 A big, bold grill, and we know that the Wildtrak
05:40 and the off-road spec models
05:41 are gonna have a honeycomb grill.
05:42 Just gives the car a really aggressive appearance
05:44 on the road.
05:45 So we know this is a Ranger as it approaches you.
05:47 If you look off to the side of the car,
05:49 we have new wheels and also the plug-in hybrid port.
05:51 Our understanding is it will be up the front of the car.
05:54 You open that port to plug in
05:55 for your electricity charge for the Ranger.
05:58 Obviously, if you don't get the plug-in hybrid,
06:00 you'll just have a normal fuel cap.
06:01 Around the back of the car,
06:02 they have employed LED taillights.
06:04 This again has been derived from the F-150.
06:07 They really make the car stand out at night,
06:09 and often with these utes,
06:10 they all kind of look the same at the rear.
06:12 So being able to differentiate them a little bit
06:14 is going to help.
06:15 You'll also notice there on the bumper bar,
06:17 there is a side step.
06:19 So that means if you do have stuff in the back of the tray,
06:21 you'll be able to step up on the side,
06:22 reach in and grab it,
06:23 and it'll be pretty easy to do.
06:25 Ford also implemented as part of the Raptor
06:27 a suspended tailgate.
06:28 So that means when you do open it,
06:29 it's spring-loaded and it's easier to open and close,
06:32 and we think they're going to carry that over.
06:34 They may even integrate a step-up
06:36 like they do in the F-150.
06:37 So that's a step that folds out of the tray,
06:39 makes it easier to get into the tray to retrieve items.
06:42 Okay, over to the Everest.
06:43 This is the thing that has me quite excited.
06:46 That's because the Ford Everest to date
06:47 has been basically just a wagon version of the Ford Ranger.
06:51 And while it is called the Everest,
06:52 it is known as the Endeavour in other markets.
06:54 What you're seeing here is the Wildtrak X.
06:57 The Wildtrak X is a new model that Ford's concocting.
06:59 It's effectively going to be a hardcore off-road version.
07:03 It's kind of like a Raptor version of the Everest,
07:05 except not quite as extreme.
07:07 So we hear that it's going to have Bilstein shock absorbers
07:09 and big, chunky BFGoodrich KO2 tires,
07:13 similar to the Ford Ranger.
07:14 So it should mean that you can do
07:15 some pretty hardcore off-roading in it.
07:17 You're not going to be going to do jumps
07:18 and that kind of thing.
07:19 But as you can see here, it is really meaty
07:22 and I seriously love the look of it.
07:24 Look at that front grill.
07:24 Again, you've got the LED daytime running lights,
07:26 the LED headlights integrated into there.
07:29 And what we've done here is just put in
07:30 that plug-in hybrid port
07:31 so you can see what that would look like.
07:33 You have the rock crawlers on the side.
07:34 And if you jump around to the back of the car,
07:36 Ford has again gone down the path of those LED taillights
07:39 to make this stand out at night.
07:41 They've gone a bit Explorer on the rear too.
07:43 So it gives it a bit of definition.
07:45 It makes this feel a lot bigger than the current Everest.
07:48 Makes it feel a little less like a wagon-based version
07:51 of the Ford Ranger.
07:52 Final one is the interior.
07:53 Our source says that the interior will have a setup
07:56 similar to the Ford Marquis,
07:57 which is Ford's new electric car based on the Mustang.
07:59 So 12.8 inch portrait screen
08:01 and then an LCD screen in front of the driver.
08:04 This will simply bring Ford into the next generation
08:06 of interiors for commercial vehicles.
08:08 And we've seen the new Hilux update,
08:11 kind of looks very much the same.
08:12 So Toyota's going to want to get up with the game
08:15 if they really want to compete
08:16 with the next generation Ranger.
08:18 Very excited to see how Ford's going to make the interior
08:20 of the Ranger and the Everest feel
08:22 a little less industrial looking with hard surfaces
08:25 and that kind of thing.
08:26 We don't want it blowing up our hardness tester.
08:28 What has Ford said about all this?
08:30 Well, we put these questions to Ford
08:32 to see whether they would provide a response
08:33 and unsurprisingly enough,
08:35 they didn't really want to say too much,
08:36 which is a good sign that tells us
08:38 this information is probably right.
08:39 But if you want to see their full responses,
08:40 you can head to our website
08:42 and the link is in the description
08:43 that will take you to the full news story
08:45 with Ford's full responses to our questions.
08:47 So what's my take on all this?
08:49 Well, I'm personally a really big fan
08:50 of the Ford Ranger and the Ford Everest.
08:52 Both of those cars, I mean,
08:54 if you put aside the fact that they were engineered
08:56 and designed here in Australia,
08:57 you know, patriotism and all that sort of stuff,
08:59 they're both really good dual cab utilities
09:01 and also a ute-based SUV.
09:03 But the thing that really makes them shine
09:05 is how versatile they are for towing,
09:07 for comfort and for off-road driving.
09:09 So they really do tick all those boxes.
09:11 The Ranger Raptor then takes it to the next level
09:13 because you can do jumps in it.
09:15 I've done jumps in it before
09:16 and any ute that does jumps happily without breaking
09:19 is a good ute in my opinion.
09:21 So that means that Ford has a problem on its hand.
09:23 It's like a 911.
09:24 How do you improve a 911 without annoying people?
09:27 And Ford has to do the same thing here with the Ranger.
09:29 They have obvious abilities to improve technology
09:31 'cause it is a little backwards in technology.
09:33 In fact, all utes are.
09:34 And also the introduction of a plug-in hybrid drivetrain
09:36 will give Ford access to a few more customers
09:39 who wanna try and reduce CO2 levels
09:41 but still need a dual cab ute for their business
09:43 or their agency if they're within the government.
09:45 What does this mean for the other competitors?
09:47 Well, they could be in trouble.
09:48 Toyota has committed to having a hybrid
09:50 across its entire lineup by 2025.
09:53 That'll include utes like the Hilux.
09:55 The Hilux is currently the best selling
09:57 dual cab ute in Australia.
09:58 The problem is Hilux hasn't really caught up
10:00 in terms of technology or in terms of the way
10:02 they present the interior and the way that the car drives.
10:05 So Toyota has just revealed a new update for the Hilux
10:08 but it isn't a big change from the current one.
10:10 And they'll wanna have a really impressive hybrid system
10:13 out there pretty soon to compete with a plug-in hybrid.
10:16 That sits one step above a regular parallel
10:19 or series hybrid like you'd find it
10:20 in the Prius or a Camry.
10:22 So is this next generation Ranger and Everest
10:24 a good thing or a bad thing?
10:25 Well, in my opinion, it's only a good thing
10:27 but there's a caveat to that.
10:29 This technology needs to work flawlessly.
10:31 Ford goes and plugs a plug-in hybrid into the Ranger.
10:34 This is a vehicle that someone is going to drive
10:36 across the center of Australia.
10:38 There is a lot of nothingness out there.
10:40 You want a car that's easy to fix
10:41 and you can get serviced anywhere.
10:43 When the car's out of warranty in five years time,
10:45 you don't wanna have to keep taking it back to Ford
10:47 to have it fixed.
10:48 So this technology is going to have to be complex
10:50 so that it meets the requirements of fuel efficiency
10:52 but equally, it's going to have to be simple enough
10:54 so that you can't find yourself stranded
10:57 in the middle of the desert
10:58 and not be able to fix the problem that you've got.
11:00 If it's all electronic stuff and the car's not working,
11:03 what's the point?
11:04 And that's why Toyota have been very smart
11:06 with their strategy on Hilux
11:07 and stuff like 70 Series Land Cruiser.
11:09 Some of the switches in those cars were used in the 70s.
11:12 I'm exaggerating there,
11:13 but they keep them as simple as they can
11:15 for the reason that if you do break down somewhere,
11:17 you can fix it yourself or find a part
11:19 just around the corner in a Toyota dealership.
11:21 So let us know in the comments below,
11:23 what do you think?
11:24 Are you excited for all this stuff?
11:25 Do you have any questions?
11:26 I'll answer as much as I can.
11:27 And no, I can't tell you who my confidential source is,
11:30 but for all of the details, you can head to our website.
11:33 The link is in the description.
11:34 We have the full write-up there
