00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:00 Last year, we published a video
00:02 about the 2022 Ford Ranger and the Ford Everest.
00:05 We went over some of the engines that are coming to the cars
00:07 and also some of the features you can expect.
00:09 Well, today we have some new information.
00:11 We've got some spy footage that'll give you
00:12 a much closer look at the inside
00:14 and the big vertical screen
00:15 that's coming to both of these models,
00:18 along with a recap of what we've had previously.
00:20 So we're going to split this video into two parts.
00:22 We'll run over the stuff that we already know
00:24 and that we've built on since our last video.
00:26 We'll also have a section there with the new spy footage
00:29 so you can get a closer look at the interior.
00:30 And finally, we'll finish it up with my take on this
00:33 and what it means for the industry.
00:35 If you haven't done so already,
00:36 make sure you subscribe to our channel
00:37 and press the bell icon
00:38 so you can find out every single time
00:40 we publish one of these videos, but let's get started.
00:43 Let's kick off with what we already know
00:46 and what we've covered in our previous video.
00:48 A lot of that information is now solidified
00:49 and we're a little more confident
00:50 in terms of it coming to reality
00:52 when these vehicles are finally released.
00:54 Keep in mind as well that the information
00:55 that we're talking about now is likely just to be
00:57 for the Australian and Asian markets.
00:59 The US market might get a slightly different variant
01:02 of this information, so keep that in mind.
01:04 Don't hold me to it if the US
01:05 doesn't get exactly what we have here.
01:07 So we know with Ranger and Everest
01:09 that they will finally kill the 3.2 litre diesel.
01:12 That is dead at the end of this current generation of Ranger.
01:14 They will get three new engines,
01:16 making four engines in total.
01:18 That means the two litre,
01:19 four cylinder twin turbocharged diesel will carry over.
01:22 That's made it to a 10 speed automatic transmission.
01:25 It produces 157 kilowatts of power
01:27 and 500 Newton metres of torque.
01:29 It's available as a rear wheel drive in the Ranger
01:31 or full time four wheel drive in the Everest.
01:35 And it's likely that they may also offer some variants
01:37 of the Ranger as full time four wheel drive as well.
01:39 Whether it includes this two litre diesel
01:41 is unknown just yet.
01:43 We also think they might get a slight power
01:45 or torque increase as well.
01:47 This engine's been around for a little while now.
01:48 The rest of the competition has caught up.
01:50 We have high lights now at 500 Newton metres of torque
01:52 as well, and Ford may bump this up ever so slightly
01:54 when they do finally roll out this next generation
01:57 of Ranger and Everest.
01:58 Next up is a three litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine.
02:03 We reported on this last time that it was used in the F-150
02:06 and it started production in 2018 in that vehicle.
02:09 Well, since then it's been discontinued from the F-150.
02:11 And that means that it may not see life in the Ranger here,
02:14 or they could simply exclusively use that engine
02:17 given how much they have put into developing it
02:19 just for Ranger and Everest.
02:21 It produces 186 kilowatts of power
02:24 and 600 Newton metres of torque.
02:26 It too is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
02:29 But the difference here is that this will be full-time
02:31 all-wheel drive.
02:32 There won't be a rear wheel drive option.
02:33 That's way too much torque to just send
02:35 through the rear wheels.
02:35 And it's likely that this will be available
02:37 both in Everest and Ranger.
02:39 The engine is just for the Australian and Asian markets.
02:41 There is a chance it'll be made available in the US,
02:43 but the US is very much a petrol market.
02:46 Given it has been discontinued from the F-150,
02:48 we may see it discontinued altogether
02:50 from the Ranger program for the US.
02:52 Finally, we have an engine that is likely
02:54 to just be placed inside the Ranger Raptor and the Everest.
02:57 Now we don't know whether this will make it
02:59 to the Australian market.
03:00 The Australian Ranger Raptor may get a three litre V6 diesel,
03:03 but we do know that this is shoot-in for the US market.
03:06 And it's a 2.7 litre turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine.
03:10 It's a petrol.
03:11 It produces 242 kilowatts of power
03:14 and 542 Newton metres of torque.
03:16 It too is mated to that 10-speed automatic transmission
03:18 that Ford co-developed with GM.
03:21 We know that this is coming to the Ranger
03:23 because it is used in the Bronco
03:25 and that uses a slightly modified version
03:27 of the Ranger platform.
03:28 We also have this screenshot here
03:30 from one of the Ford development computers
03:32 that shows that it is used inside Ranger,
03:35 which makes it logical that they will use it
03:37 for the next Ranger Raptor.
03:38 Whether it is available for the Australian market,
03:40 we don't know yet, but if it is,
03:42 it will be permanent all-wheel drive.
03:44 It won't just be rear-wheel drive,
03:45 but they will probably engineer some system
03:47 that allows it to send torque to the rear
03:49 for Baja mode and for fun drifting stuff.
03:52 Now, finally, one of the engines that we think
03:53 is going to be fitted to both the Ranger and Everest
03:56 is a plug-in hybrid.
03:57 This is one that's used in the rest of the Ford family
03:59 and it's a 2.3 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine
04:03 with a plug-in hybrid system attached to it.
04:05 We understand that it'll produce 270 kilowatts of power
04:08 and 680 Newton metres of torque.
04:11 That's a fairly meaty setup and it should mean
04:13 that these are very economical vehicles.
04:16 And it is important for the Australian market
04:17 when you consider where we're heading
04:19 in terms of regulations for emissions.
04:21 Car companies like Ford who produce utes and lots of utes
04:24 want to have these vehicles available for fleets
04:26 that are emissions conscious.
04:28 They'll be able to purchase one of these
04:29 and know that the emissions are going to be limited.
04:31 So it'll be interesting to see whether Ford launches
04:33 with that immediately or whether that will come down
04:35 the track later on once there are more regulations
04:38 around the emissions on these commercial vehicles.
04:41 Okay, next up, let's talk about the new information
04:44 we have today, and that is the Ranger
04:46 and the Everest interior.
04:47 So we exclusively revealed last time
04:49 from our top secret source that the interior
04:52 of the Ranger and Everest are going to go super high tech
04:55 and feature the vertical screen found
04:57 in the new Mustang Mach-E.
04:59 Now, since then, Ford has revealed that this screen
05:01 is coming to the F-150 Lightning.
05:03 And as you can see here in our spy footage,
05:06 you can see that giant vertical screen.
05:07 So it's a 15.5 inch vertical infotainment system
05:10 with SYNC 4, which is Ford's latest version
05:13 of their SYNC infotainment systems.
05:15 We think that this will be reserved
05:16 just for the top end models.
05:17 The lower end models will get a smaller 12-ish inch screen,
05:21 and that'll be in place of that vertical screen
05:23 that does everything from your climate controls
05:25 through to radio and nav.
05:26 We think that the smaller screen will then house
05:28 manual controls beneath it, but will still be fairly big
05:31 in comparison to a lot of the competitors in this segment.
05:34 In addition to that, our spy footage shows
05:35 that these vehicles have a 360 degree camera.
05:38 So finally, the Everest and the Ranger will get
05:40 that technology that's been available in other vehicles
05:43 in this segment for a little while now,
05:44 and hopefully with a screen that size.
05:46 They've gone with high resolution cameras
05:47 so we can actually get some benefit out of that technology.
05:50 If you do look close as well,
05:51 you can see a shark fin antenna on the Everest.
05:54 So that replaces that standard aerial
05:56 that we've seen on the previous generation.
05:58 The other curious thing as well is that the Ranger
06:00 in these images has rear disc brakes.
06:02 So that could be reserved just for the V6 model,
06:05 or it could be for the entire range.
06:06 But given how long drum brakes have been around
06:09 and that a lot of the Chinese competitors,
06:11 for example, are using disc brakes now,
06:12 I think it's about time these manufacturers
06:14 finally caught up and started fitting disc brakes
06:16 to these models.
06:17 And you probably need them when you're sticking
06:19 a V6 diesel engine inside,
06:21 or even for the Raptor,
06:22 that bigger turbocharged V6 petrol engine,
06:25 you wanna be able to have the stopping power
06:27 when you need it.
06:27 The other thing that's unclear at the moment
06:29 with the utes that we've seen is the suspension.
06:31 We don't know whether they're going to retain leaf springs
06:33 or whether they'll all go down the path of the Ranger Raptor
06:35 where they get the coil sprung setup.
06:37 We can see in some of the spy photos we've had previously
06:40 of the new generation Rangers,
06:42 they've had the street sweeper style
06:44 spy photo preventative measures on the rear suspension
06:47 and also the differential.
06:48 That could mean that Ford is hiding the fact
06:50 that these are going to coil spring instead of leaf spring,
06:52 or they could simply do what some manufacturers do,
06:54 which is fit leaf springs to entry-level models
06:56 and then coil springs as you move up the range
06:58 for that extra comfort
06:59 without really compromising your load capacity.
07:02 Now, what does this mean for the rest of the vehicles
07:04 in this segment?
07:05 Well, I reckon they could be in for a bit of a tough time.
07:07 Ranger is currently the second best selling vehicle
07:09 in Australia and sometimes takes that first position away
07:11 from the Hilux.
07:12 But if you are sitting the new generation Ranger
07:15 up against the Hilux
07:16 or even up against the rest of the utes in this segment,
07:19 it could mean that the offering from Ford
07:21 is well and truly above and beyond
07:23 what's available from the competition.
07:24 And if that's the case,
07:25 you really don't have any reason to buy anything else.
07:28 I mean, why would you buy a car
07:29 with an eight inch infotainment system
07:31 when you can get something
07:32 with a giant infotainment system like that?
07:35 Obviously it all needs to work well.
07:36 If you're a trader, you're wearing gloves
07:38 and you've got dirty hands,
07:39 you want to still be able to use the screen.
07:40 So that will all still be seen
07:42 once we finally get a chance to test them.
07:43 But it could mean rough times ahead
07:45 for a lot of the competitors in this segment
07:47 and increasing sales for Ford.
07:49 For the auto industry as well,
07:50 if Ford does finally reveal a plug-in hybrid
07:52 or a hybrid version of their vehicles,
07:55 it'll mean the rest have to play catch up.
07:56 Toyota obviously has access to a lot of this hybrid
07:59 technology in the rest of their range
08:01 and it'll mean fitting it to the Hilux
08:02 is pretty straightforward.
08:03 But the other competitors in this segment
08:05 are still quite a way away
08:06 from having hybrid technology available.
08:08 So the first ute in Australia with hybrid tech
08:11 will get that run with sales,
08:13 especially with fleets that are conscious of emissions
08:15 and pulling their outputs down.
08:18 So it'll be really interesting to see
08:19 how the rest of the manufacturers react
08:21 to this information when Ford finally does reveal
08:24 the Everest and Ranger.
08:25 Okay, so that is a wrap of the new information we have.
08:28 If you have any questions or any comments,
08:30 what do you think about the design?
08:31 What do you think about the interiors of these vehicles?
08:34 And if you do see any of these out on the road testing,
08:36 make sure you send us an email,
08:37 send us through your pictures
08:38 and any video stuff that you get to carexpert.com.au.
