00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays.
00:10 Today we're looking at 10 modern PS1 style games.
00:22 You better believe these low poly classics are brand new.
00:26 For this video, we'll be looking at games released in the last few years that are inspired
00:30 by the graphical and gameplay styles of the PlayStation 1.
00:43 The Convenience Store
00:55 As we'll see throughout this list, low poly and CRTS graphics are perfect for horror.
01:02 Though these graphics were once cutting edge, the strange shapes and blurry textures can
01:07 now seem very disturbing.
01:09 The Convenience Store isn't quite as graphically limited as some of our other games, but it's
01:16 an excellent and frightening title, so it goes on our list.
01:27 Made in Japan with Japanese audio, you play as a young woman who works in a convenience
01:32 store on the night shift.
01:34 We won't spoil anything, but this isolated, empty store builds suspense like few other
01:40 settings with sinister customers and unnameable horrors on the security cameras.
01:52 Fears to Fathom - Home Alone
01:59 There are multiple entries in the Fears to Fathom anthology now which adapt short stories
02:05 into horror games.
02:06 Home Alone is just one of those episodes, and it'll take you only about 20 minutes
02:11 to see it through.
02:13 But it's quality, not quantity, and you'll be chilled to your core wandering through
02:18 this dark house at night.
02:27 There's a shadowy figure outside who may be trying to get in, but does he get in or are
02:33 you just imagining things?
02:35 This story in particular came from Reddit too, which is a fertile ground for producing
02:40 terrifying tall tales and creepypastas.
02:44 Keep an eye on Fears to Fathom's website to keep up with future installments.
02:54 Blood Wash
03:05 In this game, you'll be playing through a VHS filter the entire time, complete with
03:10 invasive scanlines.
03:11 You're playing as pregnant college student Sarah, whose boyfriend hasn't been able
03:16 to do the laundry.
03:18 This means she has to venture out late at night to the laundromat because she has a
03:22 job interview the next morning and no clean clothes.
03:26 But of course, there's a serial killer on the loose who specifically wants to claim
03:31 pregnant women as his victims.
03:40 It's a corny concept, but the run-down environment and very unsettling sound design keep the
03:46 experience feeling fresh.
03:48 And it'll make you think twice about putting off doing laundry in the future.
03:58 Murder House
04:07 Another slasher, this one has a classic concept and a lot of cliches to sink your teeth into.
04:13 There's a spooky abandoned house that a serial killer once lived in, and investigators
04:18 go and visit years later.
04:21 Lo and behold, the killer returns, and you've got to try and get out alive.
04:26 Paying homage to genre staples like Resident Evil, Murder House also boasts tank controls
04:32 and fixed camera angles.
04:41 It's also not a PC exclusive like many other PS1 style games, releasing on PS4, Xbox One,
04:48 and Switch as well.
04:50 So no matter your preferred device, you can get the game and enjoy being hunted down by
04:56 the formidable Easter Ripper.
05:05 Frogan
05:11 If you're not a horror person, don't worry.
05:14 Not everybody is using lo-fi graphics to be scary.
05:18 Others are trying to tap into the nostalgia for those bygone days of the 1990s 3D platformers.
05:25 Frogan is such a title, a charming callback to old school collectathons with simple graphics
05:30 but very strong art direction.
05:33 You play as Renata, a girl who uses her frog grapple to navigate the game's tricky platforming
05:38 levels while jumping on enemies to subdue them.
05:45 There's definitely still a market for games like this, and it's nice to see somebody
05:53 filling that void.
05:54 In this case, the small studio Mulligato, which crowdfunded development.
06:05 Happy's Humble Burger Farm
06:16 Described as a "horror cooking game," Happy's Humble Burger Farm sees you start
06:20 a new job working at a fast food chain.
06:23 But nothing is as it seems, of course.
06:26 The NPCs alone are visually disturbing, with unsettling designs that are repeated over
06:31 and over again.
06:33 However, you'll find your mission to make burgers and keep the orders coming in impeded
06:39 by the various grotesque monsters that appear throughout the restaurant.
06:54 You'll have to do a bit of lore hunting to really decipher what the story is, but it's
06:59 all rewarding, and a great way to spend a few hours if you're looking for some solid
07:04 scares.
07:16 Ultra Kill
07:26 This one's a boomer shooter, and a hugely popular one at that.
07:30 You're fighting your way through the layers of hell in a tried and true formula, punching
07:35 and shooting everything that gets in your way.
07:37 The game's fast, too, and you'll get rankings on how well you do in enemy encounters that
07:43 encourage playing quickly and mastering the mechanics.
07:53 It's a boon for speedrunners, especially since attaining the highest overall rank possible,
07:59 P-Rank, unlocks secret extra levels.
08:02 And finally, you're playing as a robot that needs blood to survive, meaning killing enemies
08:08 will heal you, not that you needed any extra incentive to fight.
08:22 Haunted PS1 Series
08:33 This series releases collections of small horror indie games via itch.io at least once
08:39 a year since 2020, and some of the games it collects are real treasures.
08:44 They're all designed to emulate that PS1 style, even including the PS1 logo in the series's
08:50 own logo.
08:51 In the tradition of classic demo discs, there are quick games that bring concepts to life,
08:56 riffing on classic games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Doom, and so on.
09:07 Many aren't full games, as is the nature of the demo disc, but some have been so well
09:12 received that the developers have been able to make full releases.
09:16 It's a great way to promote small, sometimes lone developers, and enjoy games that don't
09:22 usually go mainstream.
09:31 Dusk
09:40 Another boomer shooter, Dusk is the oldest game on our list.
09:45 It's about an isolated town that has, somehow, become overrun with Lovecraftian monsters.
09:51 It's your job to find out what happened and what the researchers were doing, while also
09:56 wiping out everybody out to try and fix the problem.
10:08 With floaty controls and satisfying weapons, it's a great speedrunning experience too,
10:14 though be sure to slow down and take in the creepy, low-poly environments.
10:19 Just because they're simple, doesn't mean the visuals aren't great after all.
10:23 It's also just as gory and explosive as you want a game like this to be.
10:39 Cruelty Squad
10:49 Brace yourself, because Cruelty Squad has some of the most out there visuals of any
10:54 video game, and it might be more than you can stomach.
10:58 This nightmare of an FPS casts you in the role of a cyborg killer for hire, sent to
11:03 perform hits on anybody the company you work for doesn't like.
11:16 Navigating the levels alone to find your targets is pretty difficult, with a lot of visual
11:21 noise to parse, but that's all by design, and makes the game highly unique.
11:28 And finally, it's got an Oregon Trading Stock Market mini-game, just in case you were looking
11:33 for something like that to invest some time into.
11:46 Thanks for watching.
12:00 you
