00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and we love a nice bit of nostalgia, so we're looking at 20
00:10of the best PS1-style demakes of modern games that we wish were real.
00:16Welcome to the madhouse, Batman!
00:21Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified
00:25about our latest videos.
00:29Uncharted by 98DMake
00:38The early Uncharted games already felt like a throwback to the original PS1 Tomb Raider
00:43games.
00:44So much so, it originally held the nickname, Dude Raider.
00:48But it has since grown into its own globetrotting adventure series that has far surpassed the
00:53original Tomb Raider's Tomb Raiding.
00:55However, for those looking for even more of that old school feeling in the series,
01:0098DMake has demade the original game to be closer in line with the series that inspired
01:06it.
01:07Everything from the pixelated and muddy graphics to the very obvious throwback to the old days
01:12of tank controls, everything about this demake nails the aesthetics of the original Tomb
01:17Raider games, only with Nathan Drake chasing those golden coins and unfortunately succumbing
01:23to the jungle's many pitfalls.
01:31Minecraft by 98DMake
01:41Minecraft is unquestionably one of the biggest gaming properties in the world, and feels
01:47as though it's been around for as long as gaming itself, despite the blocky building
01:51sim only releasing back in 2011.
01:54However, once again 98DMake reimagines the iconic builder for the PS1, and honestly it's
02:01hard not to believe this game could have come out back in the late 90s.
02:05The pixel blocky art style is still very distinctly Minecraftian, and could quite easily pass
02:11for an indie game inspired by the crafting sim.
02:15Steve still gathers crafting materials, although he must carry each piece one at a time, and
02:20the level of destruction during the material collecting process is understandably limited.
02:25But watching the little isometric version of Steve building his homestead still looks
02:30just as fun as its modern day counterpart, and we'd love to see this style of gameplay
02:34implemented either by Minecraft proper, or another dedicated fan.
02:45Resident Evil Village by Rustic Games BR
02:54The best demakes will often not only rewind time on the game they're emulating, but
02:59will also re-imagine the game to fit more in line with the time, and that's exactly
03:04what Rustic Games BR has done with their demake of Resident Evil Village.
03:10Instead of simply adopting RE8 into a tank controlled RE1 style re-imagining, Rustic
03:15has instead maintained the original game's first person perspective, and used the often
03:20overlooked PS1 Resident Evil entry Survivor as its inspiration, and the results are a
03:26perfect throwback to the series' first entry into the FPS genre.
03:31While players can freely explore Lady D's castle, the game switches to light gun style
03:36crosshairs during combat, that perfectly fits the style of the genre's infancy back
03:41on the PS1.
03:43Everything from the graphics, the art style, and the mechanics are pitch perfect, and make
03:48us wonder if we were too harsh on RE Survivor back in the day.
03:57Elden Ring by Rustic Games BR
04:08Elden Ring is already a throwback to the age of video games that didn't hold the players
04:13hand, and gave them the freedom to discover its mechanics on their own, but there's something
04:18undeniably charming about seeing the modern day classic demade in the PS1 era style.
04:24The original game's gothic style translates wonderfully to the 32-bit graphics, and the
04:29fixed camera angles perfectly nail the aesthetic of the PS1.
04:34Players still have access to much of their gear as in the original game, although we'd
04:38be lying if we weren't curious what the Dragon Ball did, and given the large arena, can still
04:43duck, dodge, and weave their way around Godfrey's many attacks, narrowly avoiding the dreaded
04:49You Died screen.
04:50Rustic Games BR once again perfectly nails the tone, feel, and mechanics of the PS1 generation,
04:57and creates a version of Elden Ring we easily could have seen on store shelves.
05:08Resident Evil 3 Remake by Rustic Games BR
05:21It's not often we can say we have a demake of a remake demade in the style of the original,
05:27but here we are.
05:28While the remake of Resident Evil 3 didn't quite meet the high bar set by the remake
05:32of RE2, or even the original for that matter, the remake was still decent enough.
05:38For Rustic Games BR's demake, the creator chose to focus on the opening moments of the
05:43remake, giving players the chance to explore Jill's apartment, something that was only
05:47briefly shown off in the opening of the original.
05:50Everything from the classic opening door loading screen to the menus are perfectly recreated
05:55here, and Rustic even introduces a new version of Jill's Nightmare that opened the remake.
06:00Unfortunately, we don't get to cross paths with the Nemesis this time around, but honestly,
06:06just seeing the absolute state of Jill's apartment might be scary enough.
06:16The Evil Within by Rustic Games BR
06:27The Evil Within was already a throwback to Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami's classic
06:31horror works on the PS1, so seeing his modern take on the genre demade for the PS1 brings
06:37the creator's work full circle.
06:40Attempting to escape the Keeper in his lair is just as terrifying in the retro style as
06:45the modern day, and the touches that Rustic Games BR added, such as Sebastian running
06:50out of breath after sprinting only three steps, is classic PS1 era nonsense.
06:55The PS1 graphics also bring the Evil Within demake closer to the original RE games and
07:01their classic boss fights with players running around enclosed arenas with an unrelenting
07:06boss close behind.
07:07Plus, the 32-bit blood effects add just that little something extra to make the entire
07:12experience feel truly nostalgic.
07:18Assassin's Creed Black Flag by Rustic Games BR
07:31The current AC games could learn a lot from Rustic Games BR's demake of arguably one of
07:35the best Assassin's Creed series entries, Black Flag.
07:39Primarily, the demakes focus on stealth and learning enemy patterns.
07:44In some ways, the demake is actually closer to a pirate version of Metal Gear Solid than
07:49the AC series.
07:50The exceptional music score plays a large part in that feeling, and the specific zoom
07:55when looking around corners when focusing on enemy patrols is distinctly Metal Gear,
08:00and we love it.
08:01The naval ship battles between the adorably small Jackdaw and the other roaming ships,
08:06complete with flashing red indicators from a direct hit, is enough to give any 90's PS1
08:11owners and fans of the game Soviet Strike all the member berries.
08:15Honestly, Ubisoft, just give us a retro AC game versus another remaster or remake and
08:21we'll be satisfied.
08:28Rocket League by 98Demake
08:31We definitely love us some Rocket League, and considering the game already feels like
08:35a retro throwback to the experimental extreme sports games of the 90's and 2000's, 98Demake's
08:41Rocket League feels like a natural fit.
08:44The isometric angle of the arena actually makes it easier to keep track of the action,
08:49and slamming into a rival driver and destroying them is just as satisfying in pixel graphics.
08:55The enemy AI, or really your teammates for that matter, don't offer much of a challenge
08:59or support, but blasting the giant ball into the goal is still rewarded with the multiple
09:05camera angle viewpoints just like in the original.
09:08A fantastic throwback to a simpler time.
09:11Hogwarts Legacy by JackArt
09:13While most entries on our list only offer snippets of their demakes, JackArt takes things
09:31a step further and has not only recreated the Hogwarts Legacy trailer in the PS1 graphics,
09:36but has also rebuilt nearly the entirety of Hogwarts to explore in glorious PS1 style.
09:41Was that PS1 Hagrid?
09:43How we've missed you old friend.
09:45JackArt has also done an incredible job at not only recreating the world of Hogwarts
09:49Legacy, but also the many spells the player has access to.
09:54Given the amount of detail and love clearly put into recreating the recent Smash hit,
09:59we wouldn't be surprised if JackArt one day released a playable version of the game similar
10:03to Bloodborne PSX.
10:12Batman Arkham Asylum by Shashank Rajagopalan
10:21Batman fans definitely suffered during the PS1 era with almost no games being worthy
10:25of the Dark Knight's legacy.
10:27However, Shashank Rajagopalan imagines a time when Rocksteady created their masterpiece Batman
10:33Experience Arkham Asylum a decade earlier.
10:36Admittedly, the graphics are a bit more than the PS1 was truly capable of, but the halls
10:41of Arkham still feel as foreboding as in the base game, and somehow D-Maid Joker is even
10:47more unsettling than his HD counterpart.
10:50We're especially fans of how the Arkham series' iconic combat system is reimagined into a
10:55more PS1 manageable 2D brawler, and the awkward stealth takedowns are an especially nice touch.
11:03Everything right down to the way the camera zooms through the environment giving players
11:06a glimpse of the danger ahead while showing their way out is perfectly PS1.
11:19God of War 2018 by 64bits
11:23The God of War series is known for its brutal, in-your-face, often literally, combat and
11:28over-the-top set pieces.
11:30But given the PS1's limited hardware, this type of blockbuster action would have been
11:35much more difficult to bring to gamers' CRTVs.
11:39YouTuber 64bits reimagines 2018's God of War in a style more akin to the newest entries'
11:46RPG sensibilities.
11:48Although brief, the sprite Kratos and Atreus pop off the screen as they explore the Lake
11:52of Nine before engaging in turn-based combat.
11:56Even though Kratos might not be able to bring his brute strength to the Draugr and Ogre
12:00directly, his attacks remain powerful nonetheless.
12:04The father-son duo even have a team-up Limit Break-style attack to bring an end to the
12:08conflict.
12:09Atreus dropping his arrow during the victory pose is an especially nice touch.
12:15Dead by Daylight by Nicolas Santos
12:30The original PlayStation had no shortage of great horror titles, but nearly all of those
12:35games focused on a single-player experience.
12:38While logistically recreating the asymmetric multiplayer game on the actual PlayStation
12:42would have been a logistical nightmare, not to mention plenty of fights due to screen
12:46cheating, it's still an interesting idea and one that Nicolas Santos decided to test
12:52for himself.
12:53Though his efforts are clearly more impressive than anything the PS1 was actually capable
12:57of, the overall feel of what Dead by Daylight on Sony's first console could have been
13:02remains intact.
13:04Although the killer is inactive in his demo, for obvious reasons, the atmosphere and overall
13:09sense of dread as the thought of a killer stalking the player as they try to complete
13:14their tasks and escape without being caught is palpable.
13:21Horizon Zero Dawn by Zeonif and Roman Grzynowski
13:26A case of more than one creator having the same idea for a property they love, both Zeonif
13:31and Roman Grzynowski brought their own versions of Horizon Zero Dawn on the PS1 to life and
13:37the results are equally as unique as they are impressive.
13:41Where Zeonif focuses on the early exploration of Horizon Zero Dawn and Aloy's first encounter
13:46with a machine, Roman aims big and recreates one of the game's most iconic battles against
13:51the Thunderjaw.
13:52While Aloy's first encounter with a Watcher doesn't go her way, she's clearly much more
13:57capable against the Thunderjaw, dodging its attacks and managing to take it down with
14:01a couple of well-placed shots.
14:03While we appreciate what both creators accomplished, we can't help but long for those stunning
14:08vistas of the PS4 version.
14:10Death Stranding by Barely Regal
14:17Hideo Kojima became a household name for gamers back on the original PlayStation with the
14:21release of Metal Gear Solid, so it seems only fitting his most recent effort got the chance
14:26to stroll through Kojima's early days with Sony.
14:29Norman Reedus' Sam Porter Bridges explores the desolate landscape in search of materials
14:34to continue his journey through the ruined America, and honestly this is one of those
14:38titles that seems to go hand in hand with the empty landscapes the original PlayStation
14:43would have been capable of rendering at the time.
14:46This version would obviously be missing the social aspect of the Stranding game, but for
14:50those just looking to deliver some packages with a pixelated Norman Reedus, this is undoubtedly
14:55the version for you.
14:57There's also something about the low-resolution BDs that is even more unsettling than their
15:02modern counterparts.
15:09Resident Evil 7 by Rustic Games BR
15:15The original Resident Evil games are still beloved to this day, and for good reason.
15:20The fixed camera angles add to the overall sense of dread, and the games did a fantastic
15:25job of making you constantly feel underpowered.
15:28While the newest entries like 7 and Village have been widely well-received and praised,
15:33there are those who long for the good old days of the nostalgic RE titles.
15:38Demaking one of the more recent entries, Rustic Games BR successfully transitions Resident
15:44Evil 7's original first-person perspective into the classic tank-control RE style, and
15:49And unsurprisingly, Jack Baker is just as terrifying in 32-bit as he is in 4K.
15:56And in keeping with the mystery of Ethan Winters, his face is appropriately obscured by the
16:01low poly count.
16:11Cyberpunk by Barely Regal
16:14The tools created by Media Molecule for Dreams are so impressive, gamers have been utilizing
16:19them to recreate all manner of classic and beloved video games, and that's exactly
16:24what Barely Regal has done recreating Cyberpunk 2077 for the PS1.
16:29Starting out in V's apartment, everything just feels appropriately retro-futuristic
16:34with the bright yet dull color palette and clearly cut-out room dressings.
16:39While much of the early exploration feels closer to what was more capable on a PC at
16:43the time than on the PS1, once V heads outside, Barely Regal makes the brilliant stylistic
16:49choice to switch to the old GTA's top-down perspective and everything once again feels
16:54more akin to the PS1 era.
16:57Besides Regal obeying all the traffic laws anyways.
17:00Dead Space by Rustic Games BR
17:15Considering the Dead Space series wore much of its Resident Evil inspiration on its sleeve,
17:20it's only appropriate that the horror series would make a perfect fit for the RE treatment
17:24right down to the static camera angles and tank controls.
17:28Cutting off the Necromorph's limbs isn't as viable an option with the limited aim of
17:32the classic RE controls, meaning running for your life is more par for the course than
17:37ever before.
17:39The Ishimura somehow feels even more unsettling when you can't see what's hiding around
17:43the next corner, and the low-res Necromorphs skidding around in the walls are sure to bring
17:48back nightmares for anyone who grew up with the original Silent Hill and Resident Evil
17:53titles back on the original PlayStation.
18:02Resident Evil 4 by Biohazard España
18:10Slightly less modern than the other entries on our list, the Resident Evil 4 demake by
18:15Biohazard España deserves special recognition just for the attention to detail put into
18:21recreating one of the most beloved entries in the long-running franchise.
18:25Returning to the classic static cameras and tank controls, anyone unfamiliar with the
18:30demake project couldn't be blamed for believing this was a forgotten Resident Evil title from
18:35the PS1.
18:36Reusing many of the sound effects from the earlier titles gives the demake an appropriately
18:41retro feel that will also tickle that nostalgic itch for long-time series fans.
18:47Biohazard España continues to work on the project and will continue to watch his progress
18:52with great interest.
19:00The Last of Us by Rustic Games BR
19:03At its heart, The Last of Us is a stealth game, so reframing the title in the vein of
19:08Metal Gear Solid makes a ton of sense.
19:11Leading Joel and Ellie through the museum with the soliton radar guiding them around
19:15the FEDRA soldiers and their vision cones is absolutely pitch perfect and aligns wonderfully
19:21with the aesthetic of the original game.
19:23Ellie quickly rushing around while Joel cautiously sneaks throughout the environment is an especially
19:28nice touch that calls back to the original game's wonky companion AI.
19:33In all honesty, we would replay The Last of Us Remade Metal Gear Solid style in a heartbeat
19:38should this fan project ever be developed to completion.
19:42Bloodborne PSX by Botster
19:53Currently the only playable demake on our list, Botster manages to maintain the original
19:59title's foreboding atmosphere even while sacrificing graphical fidelity.
20:04While certain exceptions had to be made due to trying to maintain the PS1 framework, most
20:09of what made the original such an icon is represented here.
20:13The tough but fair gameplay, the Lovecraftian horrorscape and its monstrosities, even the
20:18Hunter's Dream is lovingly recreated in the PS1 aesthetic.
20:23Everything from the menu system to the control scheme and even the game's description on
20:27the website is based on the original PlayStation's marketing and back of the box blurbs.
20:33Those looking to relive the good old days of most of our childhoods parked in front
20:37of a blinking CRTV all weekend owe it to themselves to check this one out even if you're not
20:42a fan of the genre and just looking for a little nostalgia without digging through the
20:47closets.
