00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're taking a look at the 10 Best Remakes and Remasters
00:13 of 2023.
00:20 Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:24 Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:28 Resident Evil 4
00:36 Resident Evil 4 had everything going against it.
00:39 Many regard the original RE4 as a masterpiece that is not to be touched under any circumstance.
00:45 So one can understand why some were on edge when hearing about Capcom remaking it.
00:51 Contrary to the skepticism, the project was in good hands the entire time.
00:55 With modern controls, a rewritten story, and more coherent writing, Resident Evil 4 once
01:01 again became one of the best games Capcom has put out.
01:04 If you haven't already, you need to stop watching this video, go buy a copy right now,
01:10 then come back, keep watching, you can play after.
01:17 Super Mario RPG
01:24 With Super Mario RPG being decades old, many of us were willing to accept anything for
01:29 the game to return, even if it meant a simple port for Switch Online.
01:34 But a remake?
01:35 Not only that, but a remake with CGI cutscenes, a remade soundtrack, and post-game content?
01:41 You know there were some hardcore fans bawling their eyes out the second it was announced.
01:46 Super Mario RPG truly is a fantastic remake that respects the original game in every way
01:51 possible while enhancing it in visuals, presentation, and use of modern technology.
02:01 We Love Katamari + Royal Reverie
02:10 Bandai Namco has slowly but surely been bringing the Katamari games forward to modern platforms.
02:16 This year, the second game in the franchise, We Love Katamari, got its time in the spotlight.
02:21 Sporting a brand new art style fitting of the franchise's spirit and energy, We Love
02:25 Katamari + Royal Reverie came with major improvements in controls as well as technical performance.
02:31 Now you could keep rollin' rollin' rollin' at 60 frames per second, and as a bonus, 5
02:37 more levels were included that told a fun and somewhat heartbreaking story about the
02:42 king in his more youthful years.
02:43 Here's hoping the success from this title leads to more remakes in the future.
02:48 Or perhaps a brand new Katamari game?
02:57 System Shock
03:06 The original System Shock is tough to play, especially if you played the sequel first.
03:12 Controls and UI are super rough to endure, so this remake was desperately needed, and
03:17 Night Dive Studios did a solid job with it.
03:20 Even with the lighting and texture work, its atmosphere and environment still feel like
03:24 they were ripped straight from the 1994 original game.
03:27 Some additional work could have gone in refining the mechanics to help onboard new players,
03:31 but overall it does breathe new life into familiar territory just in presentation, which
03:37 is more than we could ask for as veteran players.
03:44 Grim Grimoire Once More
03:53 Vanillaware has made a name for itself between Dragon's Crown, Odin Sphere, and 13 Sentinels,
03:59 but many have forgotten this strategy game developed for the PS2.
04:03 In all honesty, Grim Grimoire Once More plays exactly like the original in terms of controls
04:08 and mechanics.
04:09 However, it does balance out the difficulty more in addition to rendering the gorgeous
04:14 art at a higher resolution.
04:16 On top of that, skill trees helped expand new powers for your familiars, while fast-forward
04:21 functionality helped speed up slower moments in gameplay, just in case you were kicking
04:25 butt a little too hard.
04:32 Quake II Remastered
04:39 The biggest announcement to come from QuakeCon 2023 was the surprise launch of Quake II Remastered.
04:45 Sure, it looks and plays just as well as it did way back in 1997, Night Dive Studios could
04:51 have stopped there, but they didn't.
04:54 In addition to the base game, Quake II Remastered came with every expansion that came out afterwards
04:59 and even includes Quake II 64.
05:03 And there's even a brand new expansion that was made specifically for this version, made
05:08 by Wolfenstein Studio Machine Games.
05:12 As for multiplayer, crossplay was simplified through the use of a password system, and
05:16 the netcode was incredibly accurate, even if spawn frags were a bit of a problem at
05:21 launch, but you know, patches are doable.
05:24 Really, Quake II Remastered is truly fantastic.
05:27 If you haven't grabbed it already, you need to go and grab it.
05:35 Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp
05:45 Advance Wars spent the last couple decades in a deep slumber, and it seemed like Nintendo
05:49 had no interest in the IP anymore.
05:52 However, this remake showed there is renewed interest here.
05:56 Way forward are the minds behind this remake, and not only did they incorporate their unique
06:00 art style into the first two games, they also packed a wealth of content into it.
06:05 Two full campaigns, an art gallery, local and online multiplayer, unlockable COs, music,
06:11 and more.
06:12 It's truly one of the best games we saw on Switch this year, and we're hoping it
06:16 leads to a remake of Duel Strike and Days of Ruin, or even Battalion Wars.
06:29 GoldenEye 007
06:36 If you want to experience the original game, you can do so through Switch Online, but Xbox
06:41 players on the other hand, they got the more refined and remastered iteration.
06:46 Unfortunately, it is not the Xbox 360 version we could have had decades ago.
06:50 Nevertheless, this was still excellent in every capacity.
06:54 It plays like many modern FPS games and handles like it hasn't aged a day.
06:59 The multiplayer is still fun, and even though you can see the polygons, it still looks great
07:04 when remembering its age.
07:05 Sure, it sucks that there was no integration of true online play, but for what we did get,
07:10 it was still excellent.
07:12 By the way, if you already have Rare Replay, this is a free game for you.
07:17 You don't have to pay anything.
07:23 Dead Space
07:24 Oh, don't worry, we aren't letting Dead Space get lost in the weeds of 2023's best
07:33 horror titles.
07:34 Considering Motive Studios staff mainly had experience in a couple of Star Wars games,
07:39 that being 2017's Battlefront II and 2020's Squadrons, this remake could have gone bad.
07:45 And yet it didn't.
07:47 Dead Space not only recreates the original game, it elevates it with tweaks to combat,
07:53 the addition of new mechanics, and improving controls.
07:56 On top of that, the audio design is absolutely chilling, as every creak and bang will force
08:01 you to stop in your tracks.
08:09 You are never safe, even when looking through a menu.
08:13 This game right here is true survival horror, and it's survival horror at its damn finest.
08:23 Metroid Prime Remastered
08:33 In case you need a sci-fi shooter that isn't as grisly and haunting but still hits that
08:37 sense of thrill, Metroid Prime Remastered was the best one to pick up this year.
08:42 From the textures to character models to lighting, just about every aspect of this game got a
08:47 major boost thanks to the advancement in technology.
08:50 It still plays like the 2002 original, but takes advantage of new technology to help
08:55 fully realize it.
08:56 Plus, it accommodates players from both the GameCube original and the Wii re-release by
09:01 providing alternate control schemes.
09:03 If you have not grabbed this for your Switch, we demand answers.
09:06 What have you been doing?
