00:00:00 the one in five Patriots take on the four and two Buffalo Bills.
00:00:03 Wonder how that one's going to turn out.
00:00:04 Oh, but because I'm curious, you know, who knows how it could turn out any given
00:00:08 Sunday, you know, that's a thing in football.
00:00:11 Anything can happen any given weekend.
00:00:13 So to get the groundwork on what's going on with the bills, if there's any
00:00:17 cracks in the armor, maybe the Patriots could kind of squeeze through.
00:00:20 I brought on one of my absolute favorite human beings in the industry.
00:00:24 Also someone I despise more than most in the industry.
00:00:26 It's a beautiful balance that we have here.
00:00:29 Anthony Prohasta of cover one.
00:00:32 Also, I hate to admit it, but it's a fantastic website.
00:00:35 I love cover one.
00:00:35 I go to you guys all the time.
00:00:37 You do great stuff.
00:00:37 And how are you doing my friend?
00:00:39 Glad to have you back on the show.
00:00:41 I am crazy superstitious.
00:00:43 And I hate that you led with the like records and you're like, I wonder
00:00:46 how that one's going to turn out.
00:00:47 Like I'm just, but I knew what I was doing.
00:00:50 You, I know you you're too smart for your own good.
00:00:53 And you know, but I'm doing good.
00:00:54 I appreciate you having me.
00:00:55 I had you on my show earlier this week on Tuesday.
00:00:58 So it's nice to do a little bit of a home and home and I love the work and
00:01:03 everything, you know, you do over here and your grind and your
00:01:06 rise and your journey and all that.
00:01:07 So I'm happy to be able to take part and talk some bills.
00:01:09 I look up to you a lot, my friend, you are big inspiration for me.
00:01:15 And also, if you haven't already seen it, please go over to cover one.
00:01:17 I reposted a bunch.
00:01:19 If you want to see me basically get haze for an entire minute, when
00:01:22 Anthony just lists off all the ways the Patriots offensive struggled.
00:01:25 Go check that out.
00:01:26 If you really hate me, if you just like seeing me in pain, I think you'll
00:01:30 appreciate it, but yeah, we've got a film with friends here, breaking down
00:01:34 the bills, what we can expect from these matchups, which ones we should
00:01:37 be the most locked in on, but before we dive into the film, I want to
00:01:41 know from your perspective, I think it's fair to say that the Patriots,
00:01:45 you know, might not win this one just because of their history with Josh
00:01:48 Allen, the bills defense, very disruptive unit, Mack Jones and Bill
00:01:52 Belichick couldn't stop talking about it.
00:01:53 So let's, you know, wait two scenarios.
00:01:56 What went right?
00:01:57 If the Patriots were to win this game and what went poorly or rather
00:02:01 maybe just according to plan, if the bills are able to win one in Foxboro.
00:02:04 So if the pads are going to win this game, they are controlling the line
00:02:08 of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
00:02:09 They get their run game working on the offensive side, especially
00:02:12 from a gap perspective.
00:02:14 I think, you know, a, the ability to either take advantage of Ed Oliver,
00:02:17 getting upfield and move them out of the way, or use some double teams
00:02:20 and just kind of lean on that gap scheme, run, create some holes, get
00:02:24 the ball into Vermondra and even Zeke's hands a little bit and wear
00:02:29 down the bills defense, and also at the same time, if you have that
00:02:31 run game work and you also have some ball control mixed in there,
00:02:34 you're also keeping the ball away from Josh Allen and the bills offense.
00:02:37 So it's kind of like a win-win.
00:02:38 And, you know, as we talked about on my show, the past passing offense is putrid.
00:02:42 So if you have success running the ball, you don't have to put it in
00:02:44 Mac Jones's hands and let them do things that you might not want to
00:02:47 see, which is throw the ball right now.
00:02:48 Um, so one, I think that's a huge key for them.
00:02:51 And then on the other side of the ball, the ability to limit the bills run game,
00:02:56 the offense for the bills this year has been legitimately multipurpose.
00:03:01 They have had a lot of success with the, with the run.
00:03:03 They've had success with the past.
00:03:04 They've obviously had a few sluggish games week one against the jets
00:03:07 this past week against the giants.
00:03:09 Um, even some spurts, um, you know, here and there the game against Jacksonville,
00:03:14 um, overall, they, you know, they kind of never really got clicking.
00:03:17 And in each one of those games, the run game didn't really get
00:03:21 going at all, or it got going late.
00:03:23 I think it's no coincidence that when the bills turn things around in the
00:03:26 second half against the giants, they went on a 17 play touchdown drive,
00:03:29 a 12 play touchdown drive, like 70% of those plays on each drive were the
00:03:33 run game and just leaning into it.
00:03:34 It gets them into a rhythm.
00:03:35 It settles down Josh Allen when they don't have that run game and
00:03:39 everything gets forced onto Allen.
00:03:40 It also gets forced onto Ken Dorsey.
00:03:42 And you kind of get into this world of trying to stay efficient, but
00:03:47 also trying to generate explosives and things can get a little muddied.
00:03:50 If you can make the bills one dimensional, that's a start.
00:03:53 And then also trying to force Josh Allen to force the game and force the issue
00:03:58 with your coverages and pressure pieces.
00:04:00 Um, so that's a path to victory for the past that the bills win.
00:04:03 It's because they stayed versatile on the offensive side of the ball.
00:04:06 If they get that run game going, which then translates to their
00:04:08 under center play action game, which they use to just put defense
00:04:11 and defenses into absolute hell.
00:04:13 Josh Allen stays efficient.
00:04:15 Take takes what's given to him.
00:04:17 Um, and also spreads the ball around to other people that aren't just a
00:04:20 fond date, so we start to get that offense into a rhythm and then
00:04:23 defensively, they get the pass into third and long really are able to
00:04:26 lean into their pressure packages.
00:04:28 They're simulated.
00:04:29 They're creepers.
00:04:29 They're five and six man looks.
00:04:31 Um, and then their ability to control the line of scrimmage with the front
00:04:34 floor in the past and the run.
00:04:36 So they can continue to play light boxes and you don't be put in
00:04:39 advantageous situations where they can rely on their coverage numbers and
00:04:42 then start to play that chess match with, are we bringing pressure?
00:04:46 Are we not bringing pressure?
00:04:47 Where's it coming from?
00:04:48 And really start to dive into that bag.
00:04:49 I'm excited to get into the pressure packages because the Patriots have
00:04:52 not handled those particularly.
00:04:53 Well, quick questions though, for the defensive side of the ball, how
00:04:57 have the bills adjusted, obviously without Matt Milano and Tredavious
00:05:01 white, two of the best players with their position, really unfortunate.
00:05:04 Even as a division rival, like that's, that's a tough one.
00:05:07 Cause just as football players, you love to see them on Sundays.
00:05:09 And then offensively, you mentioned Ken Dorsey.
00:05:12 It's kind of strange because the bills have been pretty one
00:05:14 dimensional in recent history, especially with Josh Allen, obviously
00:05:17 for better or for worse, but it was an area with the Patriots where they
00:05:19 could kind of live because it doesn't matter if Josh Allen's throwing a lot
00:05:22 in the game for some reason against Bill Belichick, he has all the patients
00:05:25 in the world and he'll take that short stuff.
00:05:27 So what's the deal with Ken Dorsey?
00:05:29 And also, like I said, how are they adjusted without two of
00:05:31 their best players on defense?
00:05:32 We start with Ken Dorsey.
00:05:34 If you are within the bills fan base or bills media, it is.
00:05:40 And I don't want to say this cause it's going to sound off.
00:05:42 Like it's going to come off like gatekeeper rude, but Ken Dorsey is the
00:05:46 low hanging fruit for the average fan.
00:05:48 Whenever anything goes wrong on offense, it's Ken Dorsey's fault.
00:05:52 Like the joke for me and the joke for us is like, Oh, like I thought I was
00:05:55 going to be sunny out today and it's raining.
00:05:57 Well, thanks a lot.
00:05:58 Ken Dorsey, Ken Dorsey sucks.
00:05:59 Like everything is Ken Dorsey's fault.
00:06:01 If Josh Allen makes a bad decision, that is 100% on Josh Allen.
00:06:06 Well, it's because Ken Dorsey didn't set them up for success, right?
00:06:09 Or Ken Dorsey's got to reign him in.
00:06:10 It's all leads to all roads lead to Rome, but all problems lead back to Ken
00:06:15 Dorsey for a majority of the fan base.
00:06:16 When you look at it objectively, this bill's offense has improved.
00:06:21 Almost in every efficiency metric and advanced metric last year to this year,
00:06:25 from last year to the year before with Brian Dable, but there are inconsistencies.
00:06:30 There are bumps in the roads, his ability to adjust in game.
00:06:33 If his established or prepared game plan, isn't working out of the gate,
00:06:38 he tends to adjust either incorrectly or adjust a little bit late.
00:06:42 The giants game is a good example, right?
00:06:44 Everybody and their mother could have told you they need to pivot to the run
00:06:46 halfway through the first quarter when things weren't clicking too much.
00:06:49 Granted, there were some variables, the Gabe Davis fumble, um, a couple,
00:06:53 you know, pieces here and there, there were out of Dorsey's control, but to
00:06:56 settle things down, he could have pivoted earlier, you know, he did in the second
00:06:59 half, so better late than never, but some of those in-game adjustment pieces,
00:07:03 some of his concepts, a lot of this bill's offense, especially when you
00:07:07 compare it to Brian Dable, Brian Dable is a very good schemer.
00:07:10 He will create something that will get your third string tight end wide open.
00:07:14 And it's a 15 yard completion and nobody saw it coming.
00:07:16 Ken Dorsey's offense is more.
00:07:18 I'm going to give you concepts that are designed to beat coverages.
00:07:22 And then I want my quarterback to go out and read those coverages.
00:07:25 And that's fine.
00:07:26 You know, that's acceptable.
00:07:27 And just, it's just hard in today's NFL to consistently live like that
00:07:31 with all the disguising of coverages, disguising a front simulated position,
00:07:35 this football, all this kind of stuff.
00:07:37 And so he asked Josh Allen to read things out a lot.
00:07:39 And when things break down, sometimes Allen doesn't have the answers,
00:07:43 which is partly due to Allen, but also partly due to Dorsey and how he's
00:07:47 building progressions and concepts.
00:07:48 Um, so that's been some of the struggles, but on the whole.
00:07:51 He's been good.
00:07:52 Um, we'll see what happens, you know, this year as they move forward last year,
00:07:56 they slowed down as the year went on, but on the whole, he's been a very
00:07:59 good offensive coordinator, I think.
00:08:01 Um, you know, again, you got to look at a lot of metrics when you're looking
00:08:04 at EPA per play and what he's done with the run game this year
00:08:07 in partnership with Aaron Cromer.
00:08:08 He's a good dude.
00:08:10 Um, I think there's a lot to like and a lot to be excited for, but
00:08:12 he's not without his warts and he does have to improve in several areas.
00:08:15 And then on the defensive side of the ball, we really only got one full game
00:08:18 with it, but Doreen Williams, um, somebody who really wasn't going to
00:08:22 have any business seeing meaningful snaps this year for the bills started
00:08:26 opposite of Terrell Bernard last week.
00:08:28 Um, looked good.
00:08:30 You know, he's got burst, he's got athleticism, he's got long arms.
00:08:33 The big thing with him is he comes from Tulane and they play
00:08:36 a very basic spot drop defense.
00:08:38 It's literally madden style.
00:08:40 Like, okay, you're the linebacker.
00:08:42 Okay.
00:08:42 Get to your depth, seven, eight yards, get to it, turn and
00:08:45 look and try and find somebody.
00:08:46 The idea of the car, the concept of match coverages or carrying
00:08:50 tight ends or carrying the number two or three wide receiver wasn't a
00:08:54 regular occurrence, if any type of recurrence for him, um, in Tulane.
00:08:58 I think I watched like five full games of his and I saw him carry someone
00:09:02 like match style three total times in those five games, but Sean McDermott
00:09:07 has really done a good job of leaning into the strengths of
00:09:10 his players this year on defense.
00:09:12 He's changed the way the bills have operated for philosophically
00:09:15 on the defensive side of the ball.
00:09:16 So we, it's a huge loss with Matt Milano.
00:09:19 It's also a huge loss with Daquan Jones upfront.
00:09:21 Entry.
00:09:22 Yeah.
00:09:23 I mean, Daquan right now, granted sample sizes factored in of all of 232.
00:09:29 Edges and interior defensive players.
00:09:30 Daquan Jones is fifth and pass rush productivity, let alone what he does
00:09:34 against the run and how many double teams he sees, what he's able to do.
00:09:37 He's been an absolute, he was, he was on the way to an all pro year on the
00:09:40 interior and he had a great year last year as well, um, but McDermott's been
00:09:43 able to lean into different pieces.
00:09:45 They have enough corner depth.
00:09:46 You're not going to be great when you lose an all pro like Trey white, but
00:09:50 with Dane Jackson, with Christian Benford, Kyrie, Elam hasn't hit what
00:09:53 people have wanted him to hit, but him being the third or fourth
00:09:56 corner is still good depth.
00:09:58 So they're able to mitigate that a little bit.
00:09:59 Um, but the way that they've stemmed the tide with Milano has just been with a lot
00:10:04 of good scheming and a lot of attack minded nature from Sean McDermott.
00:10:07 Um, I'm more concerned about the upfront piece and how they continue
00:10:10 to live in that rotation, but they did well enough against New York and we'll
00:10:14 see what continues to happen going forward.
00:10:15 We will.
00:10:16 All right.
00:10:17 Now I'm just itching to get into some film.
00:10:18 All right, let's do it.
00:10:19 First thing we've got is the bills run game.
00:10:22 You're going to highlight a concept dart tackle rap.
00:10:25 Now, what have you got for the people?
00:10:27 Educate us please.
00:10:28 And thank you.
00:10:29 So let's go.
00:10:30 I'm going to pull up this clip from the bills, most recent
00:10:36 game against the New York giants.
00:10:38 So tackle rap and dart is a concept that the bills leaned into a bunch last
00:10:44 year that worked really well for them.
00:10:45 Um, it was something that if you watched, or if you remember the bill Saturday
00:10:52 night victory against the Miami dolphins last year, it was.
00:10:57 They ran it literally like three straight times and five out of six.
00:11:00 That's what they use to ice the game and really end everything.
00:11:03 Um, it's something that worked for them last year in part, it's because.
00:11:06 Of the athleticism that they have at the tackle spots.
00:11:09 Um, Dion Dawkins, you know, gets knocked a lot, uh, amongst the fan base
00:11:13 for being like fat and out of shape, but it's not true.
00:11:16 Spencer Brown's biggest strength at right tackle is his athleticism.
00:11:19 So you'll see them run this concept to and from both sides.
00:11:23 You'll see Dawkins be the tackle rap piece.
00:11:25 You'll see Spencer Brown be the tackle rap piece.
00:11:27 Um, it's a nice gap scheme concept.
00:11:29 Bill's have leaned into a lot of gap this year.
00:11:31 Granted, they run a bunch of duo and duo falls into that gap world, but when
00:11:35 they're running more like traditional gap runs, it's with this tackle rap.
00:11:40 It's with some GH counter, um, and pieces like that.
00:11:43 So this run here, Latavious Murray, um, in the backfield who has been tremendous.
00:11:48 I forget.
00:11:49 Oh, I forget.
00:11:50 I think it's like 80 something running backs when you fit, when you.
00:11:53 Filter out, I think maybe like at least 20 carries on the year.
00:11:56 He's like 11th in EPA per attempt amongst qualifying running backs.
00:12:00 He's been a tremendous addition for this offense and he's going to need to
00:12:02 continue with Damien Harris going down.
00:12:04 Um, so this is Latavious Murray run.
00:12:06 And so this is dart here or tackle rap.
00:12:10 Um, the, if it is tackle rap, but dart is the official name.
00:12:13 And again, so we go through there.
00:12:15 What you're going to see here is you're going to see
00:12:16 Deon Dawkins come across.
00:12:17 What's nice about this one is if you watch the block here, um, the
00:12:22 combo block with Osiris Torrance and Mitch Morris, and then how Torrance
00:12:26 climbs to the second level, he's been a real nice piece for them
00:12:30 this year on the offensive line.
00:12:31 He's added to some of that ability to create vertical displacement
00:12:34 and people moving ability.
00:12:35 But what he's shown this year, and I think a lot of it is because
00:12:38 of the weight that he's lost.
00:12:39 Some of what he struggled with at Florida was climbing to the second
00:12:42 level, and then when he climbs to the second level, he wouldn't
00:12:45 really sustain contact he's changed that this year.
00:12:48 And I think a lot of it is because he's literally lighter in his feet.
00:12:51 Okay.
00:12:51 So running in slow motion here, see Dawkins come across the screen.
00:12:55 There we go.
00:12:57 We see the rap piece.
00:12:58 Yeah, very big man, but he's agile, like for a big guy, like he's moving
00:13:02 smooth and then this is just beautiful.
00:13:03 How it develops puts that shoulder onto Bobby O'Karriker who had a
00:13:07 tremendous game for the giants, but you see him there that's sealed.
00:13:12 If you're a running back, what you want to see when you're going through
00:13:14 the hole is the backside of your blockers.
00:13:16 Like you want to see their butts.
00:13:17 I'm not making a joke and you get the seal there.
00:13:20 You get the seal here because of Torrance and Morse and then Latavius
00:13:24 Murray also paces this run really well.
00:13:26 Um, so I'll just play it here from this angle and you'll watch him pace it,
00:13:29 put his foot in the ground, get North and South Torrance gets to the second level.
00:13:33 Yeah.
00:13:34 Nice.
00:13:35 A nice 12 yard gain on this one.
00:13:36 We'll show it from the opposite, uh, angle as well.
00:13:39 This is where you get a real sense of, Oh, Cyrus Torrance and what
00:13:42 he's able to do on this play.
00:13:44 Again, steps helps secure that double team.
00:13:47 Like you get that nice feed block gets 95 off kilter leg is off the ground.
00:13:52 Um, beautiful, beautiful helps him out.
00:13:55 Mitch Morse has his hands inside, so he's able to latch on
00:13:57 once 95 gets jacked up there.
00:13:59 And then here comes Torrance climb into that second level,
00:14:03 gets his hands on Simmons.
00:14:04 Like this is pretty, like, this is what you want to, this is what you want to see.
00:14:08 Um, from this scheme for the Buffalo bills and it creates a 12 yard
00:14:13 gain on this play on first down.
00:14:15 It's something they'll run with cook.
00:14:17 Um, they'll run it with Murray.
00:14:18 They're able to get into it in a lot of ways.
00:14:20 Um, it's a very successful concept for them.
00:14:22 And this is one where for the Patriots perspective, you'll most likely in that
00:14:27 O'Karrakeh position, that'll be Juwan Bentley.
00:14:29 So he's going to be the one coming downhill, try to engage with
00:14:32 Dawkins and just kind of mess up that picture a little bit and condense
00:14:36 the space, and then you get Jelani to buy, trying to fill as quickly as possible.
00:14:39 But I mean, that's a big guy like Dion dock and size.
00:14:43 That's a tough match.
00:14:43 It doesn't really matter who the linebacker is.
00:14:46 And we've seen, especially if you create some kind of conflict, like, I don't know
00:14:49 how much the bills really use motion in their run game or in their RPO game, but
00:14:53 I think like the, there you go against the dolphins, you would see that sometimes a
00:14:57 lot of the window dressing would just make them wait that extra tick and against
00:15:01 those downhill linebackers, like the Patriots have, if you can get that extra
00:15:04 little second of space where I think you just see Juwan Bentley recognizes and
00:15:08 trigger a little bit faster to condense that space a little bit more, but still,
00:15:12 I mean, if you can create that little bit of hesitation at all, and again,
00:15:15 Dion Dawkins is such a massive polar to engage anyway, there's no guarantee.
00:15:19 But that's a battle I'm here to see.
00:15:22 Like, I want to see Bentley come forward and just slam into Dion
00:15:26 Dawkins and see who wins.
00:15:27 Like I'll watch King Kong and Godzilla fight each other in the whole, like
00:15:31 I'm totally down for that.
00:15:32 And then it's just going to be a matter of whether or not Devon gotcha.
00:15:35 Probably going to be in that night.
00:15:36 Let me see where he started out.
00:15:38 Was that a three technique position or we see.
00:15:39 Oh, go to the side of an angle.
00:15:42 Yeah, no.
00:15:42 So that's yep.
00:15:43 So that's going to be a Devon gotcha type.
00:15:45 So is that something they typically like to run at the one technique or is it
00:15:49 really just, they'll, they'll run it regardless of the look, they'll run
00:15:52 regardless of the look, but they'll run it at that one technique side.
00:15:55 Um, and let's go to the sideline angle so you can get that full perspective.
00:15:59 Um, they will run it like to that advantageous side from a box count
00:16:03 perspective, and so you can see it was six from the end zone angle, but this
00:16:07 is admin and advantageous look like four down two at the second level.
00:16:11 So you got a six man box versus six on the line of scrimmage with
00:16:15 the five offensive lineman plus Dawson Knox.
00:16:17 So six versus six, but there's seven gaps for only six defenders.
00:16:22 And then you're also moving one because you're pulling Dawkins.
00:16:24 Like you will see them run this look against heavier line formations,
00:16:28 even seven man, eight man boxes, but they really like to get into spread
00:16:32 like this and then run it because when they get into that spread look.
00:16:36 It's going to create usually a light box situation like you have here.
00:16:40 And then they're going to run it away from that tight end side
00:16:43 where they have that advantage.
00:16:45 I mean, also too, cause they're also counting on.
00:16:47 Let's go from that other end zone angle there.
00:16:50 Like this is pure.
00:16:52 I'm horrible.
00:16:54 Like a drawing and also doing that like a mouse, but like this triangle, right?
00:16:56 And I'm like, thank you.
00:16:57 Appreciate you.
00:16:58 There's only three here.
00:16:59 Like, and this is in, this is advantageous numbers.
00:17:02 So you're going to get one and then you're going to get two.
00:17:04 And then three is going to get erased because of this double team piece.
00:17:09 But then also.
00:17:10 What Torrance has been so good at climbing to the second level.
00:17:13 And based on where this linebacker is in this case, Isaiah Simmons,
00:17:16 it's an advantageous look, even more so because he's out leveraged right from the jump.
00:17:19 So you'll see them attack that away from the tight end side.
00:17:22 What you will get to, depending on what kind of alignment,
00:17:25 say you've got like a five down front,
00:17:30 which Miami did at times last year.
00:17:33 So say like Ward right here, say again, it's a five down front
00:17:36 and he's lined up here.
00:17:38 You'll also see like you'll see Spencer Brown kick down
00:17:42 and then you'll see Dawkins come in on this play.
00:17:45 Instead, he wraps in between.
00:17:47 But based on the front, you'll also see Spencer Brown.
00:17:50 If he steps down, you'll see Dawkins come all the way around and wrap around
00:17:54 Spencer Brown.
00:17:54 So almost like it's a almost like a power type of look with a kid
00:17:57 out like a guard is coming across.
00:17:59 So based on the front, they'll adjust how they block the front side
00:18:03 away from the polar.
00:18:05 OK, well, I know you got some more gap stuff for us.
00:18:07 You got duo up next.
00:18:08 Is that what we're learning about after this?
00:18:10 We are going to learn about some duo.
00:18:11 So Bill's love duo.
00:18:14 Yeah, it's it's a fun one.
00:18:16 It's so well organized.
00:18:18 Yeah. You know, I try. I try.
00:18:20 So we're going to go to duo and this is going to be
00:18:22 play here against the Raiders.
00:18:26 Is that what we got here?
00:18:27 Oh, you know, it would help be great if I click the bills offense
00:18:30 so that the bills defense, because you know what?
00:18:32 You can't run the ball if you're on the defensive side of the ball.
00:18:34 That's not what I have heard that.
00:18:36 That's what they say.
00:18:37 They say in the streets, it's a rumor.
00:18:38 I want to say streets is talking.
00:18:40 All right, cool.
00:18:40 So duo here for the Buffalo Bills.
00:18:44 And what's nice on this one is this is the concept that works
00:18:47 for all of their running backs.
00:18:49 And for those who don't know, duo gap scheme run always run to the tight end side.
00:18:53 It's built.
00:18:54 It's predicated upon double teams, as many as you can possibly work.
00:18:57 And the running back is reading
00:19:00 this front side linebacker.
00:19:03 So if he comes down inside, he's going to take it
00:19:07 and he's going to bounce this run.
00:19:08 If the linebacker plays a little outside, he steps and cuts it inside.
00:19:12 Like that's who the running back is reading.
00:19:14 And what happened in this game against the Raiders, I was going to say Oakland.
00:19:18 I say Oakland all the time.
00:19:19 Oakland in the San Diego Chargers.
00:19:21 It drives me insane.
00:19:23 I'm awful with it.
00:19:24 I just can't I can't get used to it.
00:19:26 At least you call the commanders the commanders.
00:19:28 That's the one that's really the most important.
00:19:30 You know, what's funny is most of the time I just call them Washington.
00:19:32 I've always done that.
00:19:33 I never called him the other name.
00:19:35 I've always just been like, yeah, it's Washington.
00:19:36 It's Washington.
00:19:38 It's a versatile concept for them.
00:19:39 Like when you see them run it with Latavius Murray, he usually runs it
00:19:43 on that front side, a gap or B gap.
00:19:46 Granted, if the read is there and he needs to bounce it, he will bounce.
00:19:49 But it's a versatile concept for them.
00:19:52 They've been largely successful with it.
00:19:54 And so you can see as soon as Cook steps, he's eyeing Diablo right away
00:19:57 because that's his read.
00:19:59 So he steps.
00:19:59 And what happens on this one, everybody gets washed down inside.
00:20:04 And so what an advantageous piece of this?
00:20:07 Yeah, big time.
00:20:08 An advantageous piece of this is you can set up this run
00:20:12 so that it puts your running back one on one with, in theory,
00:20:15 the weakest tackler on the other side of the ball, which is probably
00:20:18 going to be a corner.
00:20:19 And so in this one, James Cook gets matched up with Mr.
00:20:22 Jacorian Bennett here.
00:20:23 And you can see I'm going to show you from the sideline angle, too.
00:20:26 There's just a ton of space.
00:20:28 But Cook sees this get muddied here.
00:20:30 He knows Spillane is coming through there.
00:20:32 So what's he going to do?
00:20:33 He's going to bounce it and then watch him bounce it
00:20:35 and just change the angle and get right.
00:20:37 Oh, OK.
00:20:38 Sideline angle shows it a little more for you, too.
00:20:41 Again, you watch everything just kind of get washed down.
00:20:45 And as soon as everything gets washed down.
00:20:47 So again, Allen calls Kinkaid into motion.
00:20:50 They'll run it out of gun.
00:20:51 They'll run this out of under center as well.
00:20:53 So as soon as everything gets washed down, even though it's
00:20:55 to the short side of the field, you can see it already.
00:20:57 Like there is so much space here and they are just very again.
00:21:01 This is one example of duo, but Cook will put it inside.
00:21:05 Murray will put it inside.
00:21:07 Or if they're able to wash everything down, they will get cooked one on one
00:21:11 with a with a corner like they do here.
00:21:13 And again, this is just like his ability, just
00:21:16 and go horizontal and turn it right around.
00:21:19 Yeah, it's a nice little guy.
00:21:21 You kind of had a similar run like that last week, where that's his whole thing.
00:21:24 Like I asked him this week, how do you like what's the key to bouncing runs?
00:21:29 And he was saying the key is to press your blocks,
00:21:32 because if you don't press your blocks, it basically turns into an Oklahoma drill
00:21:35 where the guy standing there, you need him to help out the blockers
00:21:38 and kind of give them an opportunity.
00:21:40 So you see there, obviously, he's one of the corner.
00:21:42 That's what you want.
00:21:43 You want your running back being able to make a corner, missing
00:21:45 cornerback, missing space.
00:21:47 But that speed to win the edge is what really scares you.
00:21:51 And the Patriots now, what is this towards the boundary?
00:21:53 So that in this position would be a J.C.
00:21:56 Jackson, where he's usually pretty solid against the run.
00:21:58 But Jonathan Jones, but on the injury report, he had a knee injury last week.
00:22:03 So he's if he's not able to play, that's a Sean Wade
00:22:06 who's really struggled in terms of his angles and his pursuit and his tackling.
00:22:10 So, yeah, I mean, the Patriots front's been very good.
00:22:13 But once you get a talented running back on the outside, he gets a defensive back.
00:22:17 And a lot of the time, you know, unless you really trust that guy,
00:22:19 like it is a Jonathan Jones, really all bets are off.
00:22:22 Geez, you need to cook.
00:22:24 Has that speed that can change angles?
00:22:26 And I mean, the Raiders also their run fit structure is off from the get go.
00:22:31 Like the way everybody just gets washed, it lines up perfectly.
00:22:34 And again, like even if they stay leveraged to that outside piece,
00:22:39 the bills have executed.
00:22:40 I mean, we could literally do a whole episode just on duo.
00:22:43 Like if if it fits, so the whole can end up being here.
00:22:46 The whole can be a cut back there.
00:22:47 Like Cook is just going to read that piece.
00:22:49 This one, it's just cut dry.
00:22:50 Everything gets washed down to the inside and he's able to bounce it.
00:22:54 But if you've got strong run play from your defensive line,
00:22:58 you can blow this up.
00:23:00 Like if you can potentially win against Deon Dawkins, depending on who,
00:23:04 you know, we talked about it on my show, the personnel piece,
00:23:07 depending on who the pats want to walk down in this situation.
00:23:11 Dawson Knox has improved a lot as a blocker.
00:23:14 He's the best blocking tight end for the bills, but you can still beat him.
00:23:17 And then Dalton Kinkade is still a work in progress.
00:23:20 Kincaid does a fine enough job on this one, working towards EPS.
00:23:24 And then just get enough of them and getting inside.
00:23:26 But I don't know, like if it's Jabril Preppers coming downhill
00:23:29 or if it's Adrian Phillips or something like that, like I would think
00:23:33 that's more advantage Patriots if they're lined up against Dalton Kincaid in this.
00:23:37 Look, but they'll get to this out of, you know, 11 personnel to the tight end side.
00:23:42 They'd be here.
00:23:43 They're in 12 with the two tight end.
00:23:44 Look, they'll get to do a lot of gun out of under center,
00:23:47 out of different alignments and personnel groupings.
00:23:49 But I wonder if the bills do lean into it out of 12 in this instance.
00:23:53 Is that a potential advantage either somewhere on the defensive line
00:23:57 or with one of their thicker, bigger safeties or linebackers
00:24:00 potentially, you know, working against Dalton Kincaid there?
00:24:03 And does Cook even trust his ability to get the edge
00:24:07 if he sees that the outside or the edge defender,
00:24:10 whether it's defensive end or an outside linebacker,
00:24:12 if he's got like good positioning and he's saying, all right,
00:24:16 like, are you going to actually try to bounce this on me?
00:24:18 Will he do that?
00:24:19 Or is that going to be a situation where he more takes it inside?
00:24:21 Like how much does he trust that explosive?
00:24:24 You know, he's been I think he trusts his explosiveness,
00:24:27 but I think he's been more patient and more willing to just kind of bang it up
00:24:31 in there and take what's given to him this year.
00:24:33 If he's in the flow and he's running well like this game, he was at this point
00:24:37 he was in the flow and he was kind of feeling himself.
00:24:39 So I think he's confident, like, you know what?
00:24:41 Screw it. I'm going to press it on this one, see what happens.
00:24:43 Plus it's 21 to 10.
00:24:45 Like they have a little bit of that leeway.
00:24:46 But if the game is closer or the running game hasn't been successful,
00:24:50 he'll take what's there and maybe instead of trying to press it
00:24:54 to hit a 10 yard run, he'll just take the three or he'll take the four
00:24:57 and slam it up in there.
00:24:58 He's been also better
00:25:00 on contact this year in terms of falling forward
00:25:02 and getting yards after contact than I thought he would be at any point
00:25:06 in his career.
00:25:07 So he's been more of a smart runner this year, I will say.
00:25:10 But he definitely trusts his speed and believes in himself to get the corner.
00:25:15 And if it's you know, if it's him against a corner or if it's him,
00:25:19 if he sees to buy out there or honestly, even if it's like
00:25:22 one of the bigger bodied safeties, like I think he'll trust himself
00:25:25 to try and get that corner and he'll test it if he doesn't get it.
00:25:28 He's not going to keep going to the well and being like, dude,
00:25:30 what are you doing? Stop pressing the outside.
00:25:32 But he will test the cage like that Raptor from Jurassic Park.
00:25:36 All right. Now, see, the reason I ask is you might get Jelani to buy,
00:25:40 but if it's a four down front and they're deciding, OK, I want to attack
00:25:43 when the pats are in their nickel defense and they're not trying to clog up
00:25:46 the middle, that's either going to be Dietrich wise or it's going to be
00:25:49 Anthony Jennings.
00:25:50 Now, Anthony Jennings has been really good outside linebacker type.
00:25:53 So he's got more athleticism, two point stance.
00:25:56 He's going to be in a position where he's really going to dare
00:25:59 cook to be like, you can try, but it's probably not going to work
00:26:01 because he's really good at keeping that outside arm free.
00:26:03 And then he's got enough athleticism to be able to get back outside.
00:26:06 But if that's Dietrich wise, if I'm cook, I'm like, yeah, you're not touching me.
00:26:10 Like I can bounce this outside of your grasp and challenge the corner.
00:26:14 And we've seen that like Dietrich, he's very versatile.
00:26:16 He's a good player, but because he's on the bigger side
00:26:20 and he lacks that dynamic athleticism or even just really the athleticism
00:26:23 in the range of a linebacker, you see at times it's like
00:26:26 maybe he'll peek inside for a second and that's just enough that you need,
00:26:30 even with the long arms that he has to take advantage of the parameter at times.
00:26:33 So that's why I'm asking.
00:26:35 I feel like if you have one of those outside linebacker types,
00:26:37 that's where it's more tested and see what you got.
00:26:39 But if it's wise and you know, you think you have an opportunity out there,
00:26:44 I think he's going to take it.
00:26:45 But of course, that is a gamble.
00:26:47 Speaking of gambles, we got to pay the bills real quick.
00:26:50 So before we get into the bills, pressure packages, which is going to be a lot of fun.
00:26:54 First, let's send it over to our friends at FanDuel.

00:27:35 All right, so the next thing we're going to be diving into is the bills pressure packages.
00:27:40 Now, this is one that really scares me because one right tackle situation for the Patriots
00:27:45 hasn't been good, frankly, in like a couple of years, but especially this season
00:27:48 because you got Vidarian Lowe, who they traded for right before the start of the season,
00:27:52 playing the vast majority of snaps this season.
00:27:54 He replaced Calvin Anderson after the second week.
00:27:56 Hasn't been good.
00:27:57 He's been playing for a while.
00:27:59 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:00 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:01 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:02 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:02 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:03 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:05 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:06 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:07 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:08 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:09 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:10 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:11 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:12 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:13 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:14 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:15 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:16 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:17 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:18 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:19 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:20 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:21 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:22 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:23 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:24 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:25 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:26 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:27 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:28 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:29 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:30 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:31 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:32 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:33 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:34 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:35 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:36 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:37 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:38 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:39 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:40 He's been playing for a while.
00:28:41 He's been playing for a while.

00:33:17 He's been playing for a while.
00:33:18 He's been playing for a while.
00:33:19 He's been playing for a while.
00:33:20 He's been playing for a while.
00:33:22 They're only showing four.
00:33:23 So watch the offensive line here.
00:33:25 They respect to the right.
00:33:28 So you've got two guys on one, which is a waste.
00:33:31 The center is just kind of hanging out.
00:33:34 Now watch what Greg Rousseau does here,
00:33:38 because he knows, obviously, the pressure scheme that they're bringing.
00:33:40 He spikes inside.
00:33:42 Look at both hands.
00:33:43 He occupies the center and he occupies the guard.
00:33:46 And that, combined with Milano attacking,
00:33:49 they created a two-on-one situation against this left tackle.
00:33:53 And again, like we talked about,
00:33:54 this is you attacking protection schemes and rules.
00:33:57 This is just a simple--it's a four-man rush.
00:34:00 This isn't the most creative thing.
00:34:02 But because it's a creeper pressure, the Bills have created a free runner.
00:34:06 This left tackle is in a bind.
00:34:08 Taylor, you know, if the left tackle's got two guys coming at him,
00:34:11 he can only pick one.
00:34:12 Who's he going to pick?
00:34:13 That inside pressure, exactly.
00:34:15 So AJ Epinesa off the edge comes free.
00:34:18 It heats up Sam Howell, and he chucks this ball.
00:34:21 Now we're going to go back to the sideline angle and take a peek.
00:34:23 But again, this is just nice.
00:34:25 There's nothing really crazy with the look or the front.
00:34:29 This isn't super exotic.
00:34:30 This isn't some unseen look.
00:34:32 But it's just showing for--and it's also really good timing from Matt Milano.
00:34:37 This is something they miss when they run these packages when he's not in there.
00:34:40 He times this so well.
00:34:42 Like you have no idea he's coming until he's coming.
00:34:45 But again, it's the call, and I can't highlight enough what Greg Rousseau does.
00:34:50 Literally a hand and a hand.
00:34:52 He is just occupying two guys to really create this two-on-one situation.
00:34:57 Left tackle gets put in hell.
00:34:59 Epinesa comes free.
00:35:01 Quarterback gets heated up.
00:35:02 Now this is where it pairs with what they do on the back end
00:35:06 and where you get the intelligence of their coverage players.
00:35:09 So Micah Hyde, Bills are just running cover three on the back end here.
00:35:12 Hyde knows the situation.
00:35:14 Watch Hyde immediately on the snap.
00:35:17 He comes screaming down, and he said something--
00:35:20 I forget what he said after the presser, but he talked about kind of how he read
00:35:23 the route of the running back coming out of the backfield, and you can see it here.
00:35:27 As Hyde comes up, now the way the running back has released,
00:35:30 maybe he ends up popping this inside.
00:35:32 Maybe it's a Texas route.
00:35:33 Maybe it's a choice route.
00:35:35 But the way the running back comes out and declares and turns at best,
00:35:39 this can maybe be a fake, and he turns it up and he goes on the wheel.
00:35:43 That went off camera.
00:35:44 Boom, turns it up, and maybe it goes on the wheel.
00:35:46 It's not.
00:35:47 It's just a simple flat route outlet piece.
00:35:49 But watch how Hyde plays this route.
00:35:51 He comes up.
00:35:52 He comes screaming up.
00:35:53 He knows the situation.
00:35:55 He knows it's third and one.
00:35:56 Watch how he comes forward and then changes his angle and flattens a little bit
00:36:01 and actually drops so he can gain that leverage and gain that depth,
00:36:06 also potentially baiting Sam Howell into the throw.
00:36:09 AJ Epinesa comes screaming down on him free, gets his hands up,
00:36:12 Howell has to change the trajectory of the flow of the throw and the flow,
00:36:16 I guess, technically, too.
00:36:18 But Hyde has changed his path a little.
00:36:20 Now he sees it and pounces, changes the angle, and gets an interception.
00:36:25 Oh, my gosh.
00:36:26 Yeah, and when you watch in real time, it happens in the blink of an eye.
00:36:30 Free runner, pressure, throw, jump, pick.
00:36:33 Any time a veteran's safety is moving that fast downhill,
00:36:36 you should be very worried because he knows something you probably don't know yet.
00:36:41 And it's just good.
00:36:42 Again, this is just cover three on the back end.
00:36:45 Micah Hyde has the flat.
00:36:46 That's what he's responsible for.
00:36:47 And when you have a single receiver to that side, this is basic, right?
00:36:51 Like the running back comes out.
00:36:52 This is a very easy read, but Micah Hyde baits him the right way
00:36:56 and plays it the right way.
00:36:58 If he takes the wrong angle, this can get put over his head
00:37:01 or potentially become an incompletion or maybe just forces a bad throw
00:37:05 or a throwaway.
00:37:06 But because he comes up, again, I can't drill it home enough.
00:37:10 He's coming here but doesn't keep going there.
00:37:12 He comes here and then flattens it and then attacks,
00:37:16 and that's what leads to that interception.
00:37:18 But it's all generated because of that creeper pressure up front,
00:37:22 confusing the protection, attacking the protection,
00:37:24 creating a two-on-one and a free runner, and then heating up the quarterback.
00:37:28 These are the reasons they're one of the best teams in the NFL
00:37:31 at taking the ball away, one of a few reasons.
00:37:33 And with Mac Jones having the turnover streak that he's had,
00:37:37 this is one you're going to have to watch out for,
00:37:39 where for one reason or another, an unblocked pressure gets home
00:37:43 and he's just got to keep his wits about him.
00:37:46 Sam Howe, obviously a young quarterback,
00:37:48 but Mac Jones has also been making some young quarterback mistakes.
00:37:51 Oh, man, this is going to give me nightmares for the next couple of days.
00:37:55 I'm trying to--oh, yes, go on.
00:37:57 No, I was just going to say, yeah, Mac Jones, seven interceptions,
00:37:59 second most in the league, a 67 QB rating when blitz,
00:38:03 even though this technically doesn't fall as a blitz,
00:38:06 a 76 QB rating when not blitz, which is also not good.
00:38:10 If they can, yeah, just get him into these--
00:38:12 and this isn't even an advantageous defensive situation.
00:38:15 This is third and one.
00:38:17 They get even more creative or more hectic when it's third and seven,
00:38:20 third and eight, and then they're playing the sticks.
00:38:23 Also, Von Miller's been working his way back,
00:38:25 so now they've got Von Miller in there,
00:38:27 but they've got a really good edge rotation.
00:38:29 They work him in well, and that helps that creeper
00:38:31 and simulated pressure on third down because you've usually got fresh bodies
00:38:34 and you've got dude just screaming off the defensive line coming after the QB.
00:38:38 It's annoying because A.G. Epinesa doesn't need any help.
00:38:41 Even last year against Trent Brown, there was the one--
00:38:43 Oh, yeah.
00:38:44 Both times. The first game, Week 13, Trent Brown had the flu,
00:38:46 lost like 10 pounds.
00:38:48 I was like, "All right, you get a pass," but Epinesa got him a couple of times
00:38:50 with that little ghost and a little rip move.
00:38:53 He's legit, and for somebody to give Trent Brown consistent problems--
00:38:57 and then on the right side as well is Greg Russo.
00:39:00 Gave it to Connor McDermott.
00:39:01 There were times where Connor McDermott wasn't even getting a hand on him
00:39:03 from those wider alignments, and McDermott looks like he's probably going to be
00:39:06 the fill in the right tackle.
00:39:08 Yeah, it's hard enough when you have to block these guys one-on-one.
00:39:11 It's a lot harder when you think you're getting a blitz
00:39:13 and you're trying to help your quarterback out,
00:39:15 and really you're just letting the guy go completely unblocked.
00:39:18 One thing you'll actually-- I was trying to think of creeper pressures
00:39:21 and use an example for the Patriots.
00:39:23 Sometimes you'll see Josh Huche and Matt Judon dropping a coverage.
00:39:26 Matt Judon not anymore, RIP.
00:39:28 But in those instances, obviously fans are like, "What the hell are you doing?
00:39:31 Why are you letting a pass rusher drop?"
00:39:33 What happens is usually it's from their five down front.
00:39:36 Like you talked about, you're manipulating protections.
00:39:38 That'll usually get an offensive line to go with a Hawaii or a 5-0,
00:39:42 which basically means it's man-to-man, I got the guy in front of me,
00:39:45 and then if you have chemistry, you can pick it up if it's a line game
00:39:49 or whatever like that.
00:39:50 What the Patriots will do is they'll often drop their outside linebackers,
00:39:54 which basically leaves the tackles to do nothing.
00:39:56 The defensive ends who are bigger bodies will try to just hold them,
00:40:00 and then you'll have a guy like Jawan Bentley blitzing right up the middle.
00:40:03 So it creates a one-on-one mismatch with a running back
00:40:06 who's trying to block a big guy like Bentley,
00:40:08 and the offensive tackles aren't really doing much of anything.
00:40:11 So I completely agree, man.
00:40:13 We always talk about the Fangio and, "Oh, you don't know who's going to drop."
00:40:16 Yeah, but think about the protection rules also.
00:40:19 The manipulation of what they're doing up front is very vital
00:40:22 in the defensive success rate.
00:40:24 And even if you--like the key too, like we talked about,
00:40:26 even if you don't get a free runner,
00:40:28 if you can just manipulate the offense into thinking you're bringing more than you do,
00:40:32 sometimes defense in terms of coverage, it's just numbers.
00:40:35 If you've got seven in coverage versus only three or four in the route distribution,
00:40:39 that's heavy advantage defense.
00:40:41 And then if the situation is a third and five or a third and six or a third and seven
00:40:46 and there's more down in distance to cover,
00:40:48 it becomes even further advantageous for the defense
00:40:51 if they can lessen the amount of bodies in the route distribution.
00:40:54 So it's just a really good way to use an offense's rules and protection against them,
00:40:59 try and manipulate them, play some mind games.
00:41:01 And what also helps with it for the Bills is they are successful
00:41:05 with their five- and six-man pressures when they run it.
00:41:08 So then when they lean into the simulated pressure world of things--
00:41:11 You have to respect it.
00:41:12 Yep, you have to respect it.
00:41:13 And that's when they really--the Raiders game is a good example of them doing that.
00:41:17 And the Raiders are just keeping in their running back
00:41:20 and their tight end of block every time.
00:41:22 And then the Bills drop out and are actually just rushing four.
00:41:24 And then it's like, "Oh, we kept these guys in for nothing on third and eight.
00:41:28 Now what do we do?"
00:41:29 And it just creates this roundabout situation of chess match and manipulation.
00:41:34 And it's something that--again, this isn't unique to the Bills.
00:41:36 It's something that goes a long way towards defenses in today's game of football.
00:41:41 And now we're going to do simulated pressures,
00:41:43 but I feel like both of these just drive home how important chemistry
00:41:47 and being able to understand the guy you're next to,
00:41:50 how important that is for an offensive line.
00:41:52 Because Adrian Clem and the young guys have been getting a lot of crap
00:41:55 for the amount of pressure they've been letting through.
00:41:57 And sometimes it's just fine.
00:41:58 Like you lose a one-on-one matchup.
00:42:00 That has nothing to do with this game.
00:42:01 That's you.
00:42:02 But at the same time, when you have things like this
00:42:04 where the defense knows what you're probably going to do
00:42:07 and they can attack you and make you wrong regardless,
00:42:09 that's just--that's so tough.
00:42:10 And sometimes you've just got to tip your cap.
00:42:12 I'm excited to see this sim pressure though.
00:42:13 So what do you got for us?
00:42:15 So simulated pressure we're going to dive into now.
00:42:18 The opposite of what we saw--well, not the opposite,
00:42:21 but this time showing pressure versus the creeper piece last time
00:42:25 you are not showing pressure.
00:42:27 Initially just regular coverage look or four down
00:42:30 and then you bring that rusher after.
00:42:32 This time with that simulated pressure piece,
00:42:35 you are going to show pressure right off the rip.
00:42:38 So that's the play we're going to bring up now.
00:42:41 Share my screen and there we go.
00:42:48 Boom.
00:42:49 All right, so simulated pressure again like we talked about last time.
00:42:52 It was just four down, two at the second level.
00:42:55 Now one, two, three, four, five, yep, six.
00:42:59 So this is later in the game.
00:43:01 The Bills have already had two successful six-man pressures,
00:43:05 bringing Milano and spiking inside and looping Bernard around,
00:43:09 getting a sack off of it.
00:43:11 So Washington at this point has to honor this front,
00:43:14 has to honor this look, and it's third down and five.
00:43:17 And you couple it with everything, and the coverage on the back end
00:43:20 isn't completely showing man,
00:43:23 but you could buy that this is going to actually happen.
00:43:26 You could buy that this is going to be a legitimate six
00:43:29 or at least a five-man pressure, but this is where everything--
00:43:32 you start to play those games, and this is what the Bills get.
00:43:35 So simulated pressure on this one.
00:43:37 Keep your eye on Mr. AJ Epinesa out here on the edge.
00:43:42 So showing six, double A gap look from Bernard and Milano
00:43:46 mugging that A gap on the snap.
00:43:48 Whoop.
00:43:49 AJ Epinesa drops.
00:43:51 Terrell Bernard drops.
00:43:52 Matt Milano goes.
00:43:53 So that's how we have our simulated pressure because we showed it,
00:43:56 and we dropped a traditional rusher and brought a nontraditional one.
00:43:59 Now this one isn't anything crazy from a pressure perspective.
00:44:03 Washington actually does a pretty decent job of picking this up
00:44:07 in terms of giving Howell some time, but he evades.
00:44:10 He's moving in the pocket already, even though he necessarily
00:44:14 really doesn't have to, but he's been having bullets flying at him all day.
00:44:17 But I wanted to bring this play because it's just an example
00:44:20 of what the Bills were able to do this year.
00:44:23 So here's AJ Epinesa out of 232 qualifying interior defensive linemen
00:44:29 and edges.
00:44:30 He's 14th in pass rush productivity this year.
00:44:33 Like you talked about, like the improvement he showed last year,
00:44:36 he is a pure pass rushing guy.
00:44:38 He's gotten better against the run, but he is a pass rushing dude.
00:44:40 He's in coverage here.
00:44:41 It's third and five.
00:44:42 But watch as he drops.
00:44:45 He's not just covering grass for the sake of covering grass.
00:44:47 Watch as he drops right here.
00:44:50 Boom.
00:44:51 There's the eyes.
00:44:52 He IDs the crosser.
00:44:53 He sees Sam Howell scramble, and he IDs the crosser.
00:44:57 Now he starts to come forward, but he's in a bind here.
00:45:00 Sam Howell can run for this.
00:45:02 If AJ Epinesa comes up two forward, maybe get a little teardrop floater
00:45:05 right over the top of him, and you get a first down.
00:45:08 The savviness of how he plays this, he comes forward to close down on Howell,
00:45:13 but watch him start to break down.
00:45:15 And he looks like a point guard defending towards the perimeter.
00:45:19 Just breaks down.
00:45:20 He's got his hands out.
00:45:21 He's sitting there.
00:45:22 He's slow playing it.
00:45:23 And then this is where you see the athleticism come up, goes up.
00:45:26 High points the football, picks it off, and then throws Sam Howell to the ground
00:45:30 and then gets a touchdown out of it.
00:45:32 Oh, my.
00:45:33 This freaking defense, man.
00:45:34 Jeez Louise.
00:45:35 And this is, again, so this is where it can win for you and create some stuff.
00:45:39 Like the last one we showed created a free runner.
00:45:42 Granted, it was a creeper, not exactly simulated pressure,
00:45:44 but you change the look, and you're able to change this look
00:45:48 because you've got these athletic players.
00:45:50 Like this could be Leonard Floyd out here who did this a bunch in terms
00:45:54 of dropping into coverage with the Rams a ton.
00:45:57 Greg Russo will drop from time to time, but Floyd is the best edge guy
00:46:00 who will drop into coverage.
00:46:02 Vaughn would drop at times for the Bills last year,
00:46:04 but Epenesa now has become another guy in this mix.
00:46:07 And I think Micah Hyde said it after the game, like he does this stuff regularly
00:46:10 in practice with his coverage ability and, like, making plays on the ball.
00:46:14 This is just some of the advantages the Bills have with this package
00:46:17 because, again, you're dropping a nontraditional rusher into coverage,
00:46:22 but when you have a nontraditional rusher--
00:46:24 I'm sorry, a nontraditional coverage player into coverage here
00:46:28 with AJ Epenesa because he's a traditional rusher,
00:46:30 like this is a really good play for an edge guy who's not a coverage player.
00:46:33 Like he drops into his zone, eyes are on the QB,
00:46:36 and then he IDs the crosser.
00:46:38 Also, look where he is in relation to down and distance.
00:46:40 Here's the first down marker.
00:46:42 So he's a couple yards behind it.
00:46:43 He's still playing the sticks with the idea that if the completion happens,
00:46:46 he can come up and rally and make this play.
00:46:49 So he's got good depth.
00:46:51 He's got eyes on the QB, reads the drag coming across,
00:46:54 and then just--again, he doesn't come screaming down
00:46:57 because he sees the QB run and allows Dotson to get behind him for a completion.
00:47:01 He slow plays it, kind of plays it in between,
00:47:03 makes Sam Howell have to make the decision.
00:47:05 He puts the onus on him, and then this is just ridiculous for him to go up
00:47:09 and get it and then also to be disrespectful and insubordinate
00:47:12 and churlish and just throw Sam Howell to the ground.
00:47:15 Yeah, it's a pretty wild play.
00:47:17 We'll show it from which end zone angle?
00:47:20 I want this one. Thank you.
00:47:22 I should have timestamped this piece.
00:47:24 So again, showing that agap look, mugging it, who's coming, everybody drops.
00:47:29 Well, not everybody drops, but you see the drop.
00:47:31 Gibson lets Milano go.
00:47:32 This is actually a good job from the right guard.
00:47:35 He passes off Phillips to the center and then pops back out
00:47:41 and gets right on Milano.
00:47:42 Like, that's a good job by him,
00:47:43 but this is where you get the appreciation for what Epanesa does.
00:47:45 Like, you can already see him. He's broken down.
00:47:47 He's putting the onus on Howell and then just going up,
00:47:50 and that's ridiculous.
00:47:52 And then, Stiff Arms with a face kick.
00:47:54 Oh, my goodness.
00:47:56 That's giving me Chandler Jones flashbacks.
00:47:58 I don't like that.
00:48:00 Yeah, that was a rough game last year.
00:48:02 I'm so sorry for you.
00:48:04 It wasn't the last one.
00:48:05 You know, you learn and you grow emotionally.
00:48:07 But this is a package I think Patriots fans will also be familiar with.
00:48:11 You're going to see it against Josh Allen.
00:48:13 Patriots run a lot of cover zero.
00:48:15 So, similar to what you said with creeper pressures,
00:48:18 if you're successful or you do something enough,
00:48:20 offenses have to respect it.
00:48:22 So, when you bring all these guys up, a lot of times, again, with the Patriots,
00:48:25 they'll make it look like zero.
00:48:26 So, you're assuming they're just going to send everybody who's up on the offensive line.
00:48:30 One of the tells for these when they're actually going to –
00:48:32 really, whether they drop into zone or man,
00:48:35 they'll have Miles Bryant looking more like a safety than an actual cornerback.
00:48:39 Now, sometimes they'll send the house,
00:48:40 but what they'll do other times is a lot – they'll drop into cover two,
00:48:44 which is a pretty relatively conservative zone
00:48:46 where you pretty much have all your bases covered.
00:48:48 Like you're not going to give up anything big down the sidelines.
00:48:51 And as long as you've got like a Kyle Thugger running the pull up the middle,
00:48:54 you should be fine down the middle and not give up anything big.
00:48:57 The idea is to force a quarterback into trying to throw it short
00:49:00 because he thinks he doesn't have time.
00:49:02 You saw that with Jalen Hurts.
00:49:03 Like there were a few times when he would check into like a screen
00:49:06 or something to just get the ball out of his hands.
00:49:08 Again, like you mentioned, when you're in those third and long situations,
00:49:11 there's not a whole lot a quarterback can do.
00:49:13 Like you're in the meetings and you have these situations where if you're going to get heat,
00:49:16 like we're not trying to get a first down on third and eight if there's a chance
00:49:19 that they're going to send an all-out blitz.
00:49:20 Like get the ball out of your hand, do a slant or whatever,
00:49:23 and if the defense is a step ahead, they can just get downhill and make that tackle.
00:49:27 And the Patriots, I think simulated pressure has been a big part
00:49:31 of what's been killing them recently.
00:49:32 But I mean, with the bills, everything they can throw at you, it's not even like,
00:49:36 "Oh, this is what you have to worry about." It's this.
00:49:38 There's just, it's a very, very diverse pressure package.
00:49:41 And let me tell you, those bills defenders can eat.
00:49:44 And you know who else can eat? Me.
00:49:47 And you know what I like to eat when I do be eating?
00:49:50 Factor. Here's an ad for Factor. Thank you.
00:49:54 With the NFL season officially underway, it's been pretty tough finding time to cook for myself
00:50:00 and my family and even tougher making meals that both taste good and don't destroy my body.
00:50:05 Thankfully, our friends at Factor provide ready-to-eat meal kits that are not only chef prepared,
00:50:10 but also dietitian approved and delivered straight to your door.
00:50:13 Now, I don't know about you, but I don't know any chefs or any dietitians.
00:50:17 So this has been a huge help for me on a daily basis.
00:50:20 These saved me a ton of money.
00:50:22 I don't have to go to the grocery store to get ingredients.
00:50:25 And most importantly, they taste fantastic.
00:50:28 Additionally, they saved me a desperate trip to the nearest fast food place
00:50:32 when I have completely forgotten to cook myself dinner.
00:50:35 Head to factormeals.com/patsdaily50 and use code patsdaily50 to get 50% off.
00:50:41 That's code patsdaily50 at factormeals.com/patsdaily50 to get 50% off.
00:50:48 Just what a segue. I'm just in awe.
00:50:54 I mean, man, I'm just trying to make it fun for the people.
00:50:57 You know what I'm saying? I try. I try.
00:51:00 Man. All right. I could do this all night with you, but I'm going to be patient with your time.
00:51:07 So we got one more play. Now, I've been saying I think the Patriots run game is what could--
00:51:11 I mean, clearly you agree, all about ball control.
00:51:13 But I think the run game, if anything, because the pass game you can't rely on,
00:51:17 I think that's what's going to give them the best chance of keeping this game competitive,
00:51:20 possibly getting themselves the lead.
00:51:22 You don't want to expect too much of this version of the Pats offense, but run game will be key.
00:51:26 Now you're going to show us a play for the Bills run defense.
00:51:30 So educate us, please, sir.
00:51:31 Yeah, I'm going to show two quick ones.
00:51:34 You know, Daquan Jones, who I mentioned, he is the-- you know, was the prototypical one-tack for this Bills team.
00:51:42 But he was just creating so much juice from a pass rush standpoint, which is not what he was brought in to do.
00:51:46 He was built in to eat double teams and be a forceful piece on the line of scrimmage, not give ground.
00:51:52 And that's what he was. But he also had a pass rush pop.
00:51:55 So I wanted to highlight Ed Oliver.
00:51:57 You know, with Daquan Jones being out, that defensive tackle rotation is now Ed Oliver, Jordan Phillips, Tim Settle, and Puna Ford.
00:52:04 Phillips, Ford, and Settle all flashed in different ways against the New York Giants this past game,
00:52:12 and a little bit against Jacksonville.
00:52:13 For those who don't know, Daquan Jones went down on the first series of the game against Jacksonville two weeks ago.
00:52:18 So this Giants game was the first full game without him, even though the Jacksonville game was largely without him as well.
00:52:24 But I wanted to highlight Ed Oliver because he now becomes the focal point of the interior defensive line.
00:52:30 Him and Daquan Jones were great running mates for one another with their skill sets and how they complement each other.
00:52:35 But Ed Oliver, you know, Taylor, you and I were texting about this earlier today or maybe yesterday,
00:52:40 in terms of Ed Oliver's consistency in his production.
00:52:43 Sometimes he looks like a world-beater, and other times he does not.
00:52:47 And so I want to show this first play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London,
00:52:52 a game that was stupid and terrible, and nobody should cross the Atlantic Ocean ever.
00:52:56 I have Ed Oliver highlighted here, and you get crunch from the Jacksonville Jaguars here,
00:53:03 which means you get trap here, you get wham here.
00:53:06 And this is something that Ed Oliver has been very susceptible to in years past.
00:53:10 If you ever want to see it, literally just go look up when the Colts beat down the Bills a couple years ago in Buffalo.
00:53:16 They're just running trap and wham left and right.
00:53:20 The only difference, you know, it's pretty much the same concept.
00:53:23 Trap is when the--basically what you're trying to do, you're trying to get that interior defensive lineman to go upfield
00:53:29 thinking he's unabated to the quarterback, and then you kind of wipe him out from the side.
00:53:34 Trap, you're doing that with a guard. Wham, you're doing it with a tight end.
00:53:38 And they ran wham all day. It was Jack Doyle coming down from that tight end spot where Evan Ingram is right here.
00:53:44 It was Jack Doyle, and he was just cleaning Ed Oliver's clock left and right.
00:53:49 So it's something that Oliver's adjusted to well, and I wanted to highlight it on this one because, you know, this is a really good play.
00:53:54 He comes down. Granted, it's a tight end, but watch him come down.
00:53:58 He's under control to a degree. He's got his eyes in the backfield.
00:54:02 And then watch him get hand placement again. It's a tight end, you know, not an offensive lineman,
00:54:06 but watch him just chuck the hell out of Evan Ingram and then make the play.
00:54:09 Oh, no. Yeah, and if you play it in real time, it's violent. Boom, chucks him, makes a play in the backfield.
00:54:17 Like this is what when he's cooking, this is what he can be.
00:54:21 You will see, you know, on this one, this is him right now.
00:54:25 The ability to get up field, the hand technique, the violence, the explosiveness like and he won't just do it against tight ends.
00:54:32 Like he'll do this against guards. He'll do this against centers.
00:54:35 That ability to just get in the backfield and penetrate and cause havoc and win.
00:54:39 And Taylor, this is an example of like that type of dominant rep from Ed Oliver,
00:54:44 where you just see him immediately cause havoc and blow up a play.
00:54:48 And you're like, wow, that's absolutely tremendous. Now let's take a play.
00:54:53 I heard that little whisper. Now let's watch this play against the Giants this past weekend.
00:55:00 And he didn't have a completely horrible game against the Giants.
00:55:03 He had some plays where he flashed really well and in successful ways.
00:55:08 But he also had several reps that were really, really, really rough.
00:55:11 Now this isn't the same concept or same idea, but another piece that he struggled with in years past was again, was double teams.
00:55:18 What he's done this year, going all the way back to the preseason, he's had a lot of good reps where he'll get that double team.
00:55:24 He'll drop the knee and he'll reduce his surface area, hold the point of attack.
00:55:29 He won't give up any ground and he'll split that double team.
00:55:31 He's done it consistently and it's not an easy thing for a defensive tackle to do, whether you're a three tech, one tech, whatever.
00:55:38 It's not easy for that to happen when you're under 300 pounds, being around 292, 295 where he's at.
00:55:44 But this is an example of him not necessarily reverting back to poor play, but opportunities where you can kind of get him a little bit here.
00:55:53 So I have him highlighted here and this is just, I mean, kudos to the Giants, but this is just a rough rep.
00:55:58 He just gets wrecked.
00:56:00 He's had that ability, like normally he'll see this double team and feel it and you'll see him drop that inside knee or whichever knee he needs to be based on where he's aligned.
00:56:14 And you'll see him drop that knee to change that surface area and not give ground.
00:56:18 And this time, I don't know if he just didn't recognize it or didn't see that it was coming or, you know, I'm not putting anything out there, but maybe like, I don't know, he's tired.
00:56:25 He took a playoff.
00:56:26 Like, I don't know.
00:56:27 He thought it was going to be a pass.
00:56:28 It wasn't just whatever the factor is.
00:56:30 Regardless, we haven't seen this kind of thing from him a lot and we saw him get worked on multiple double teams like this in this game.
00:56:37 And yet he just gets completely torqued and you see what it creates.
00:56:42 It's just there's nobody there.
00:56:44 And then not only does he get like work, he kind of impeached Jordan Phillips a little bit.
00:56:49 Now you got Taron Johnson half in the fit.
00:56:52 This other lineman has climbed to the second level against Terrell Bernard.
00:56:55 So now he's into the kitchen of Bernard and it just creates a positive look for the giants.
00:56:59 The bills, you know, get out of it pretty decent.
00:57:02 It's not the worst thing in the world considering how big the hole was.
00:57:04 So, you know, it's a nine yard gain on first down.
00:57:08 But if you also watch it from the sideline angle, you can just see there's Oliver.
00:57:13 You can just see how big of a gap is created and what happens from the sideline and displacement perspective.
00:57:18 Like, boom, like that's just there.
00:57:21 And I think about a Patriots team that wants to run the football.
00:57:25 And I think about their preference for physical runs and, you know, that ability.
00:57:30 You know, I called it out earlier of leaning into some of those gap scheme runs.
00:57:33 And this is what you get here.
00:57:35 That polar coming across, you basically have in essence, you know, it's a GH counter here with Barkley stepping to his left and then going right.
00:57:42 Here comes the guard.
00:57:44 Here comes Waller, who is that H.
00:57:46 So it's also nice to this is also another piece you can do.
00:57:50 The bills will be susceptible to jet motion.
00:57:53 I was gonna bring that up.
00:57:55 Yes, you can manipulate the second level defenders for the bills.
00:57:58 It goes all the way back to last year against the Packers on that Sunday night game.
00:58:05 You want to manipulate the second level.
00:58:07 You send someone in jet motion.
00:58:09 They will shift.
00:58:10 You want to bring Terran Johnson in the box.
00:58:12 They're five foot eleven, one hundred ninety two pound nickel corner, who I think is one of the best nickel corners in all of football and is arguably the most important and most underrated player on the bills defense.
00:58:23 But if you want to throw that jet motion to pull him into the box and make him have to fit against a guard or a tight end or whoever and make him play as an actual box off ball linebacker, you can do that by throwing some jet motion.
00:58:37 So the Giants do it doesn't impact anything too crazy on this one, but you also have that little bit of jet motion.
00:58:43 But watch what it also does.
00:58:45 It's very slight, but watch what the jet motion does to Terrell Bernard here as the motion comes.
00:58:50 So he starts to shift already, but then watched a little bit of hesitancy right there.
00:58:55 He just plants that foot enough.
00:58:57 And by planning that foot enough, it creates some extra leverage for the lineman to climb to the second level and create that piece.
00:59:04 So, again, this is well executed from the Giants.
00:59:06 This is well designed, but I chose this play because it can show still some of the areas of opportunity for Ed Oliver.
00:59:13 But then also what you can do with some jet motion pieces in terms of manipulating the second level defenders for the bills and creating leverage for yourself on offense.
00:59:21 And this is perfect because this was one of the keys of the Patriots having success against the Raiders, especially in short yardage.
00:59:27 The Patriots going into last week were the only team, I think, in the NFL that had a third down conversion rate or short yardage conversion rate under 50 percent.
00:59:36 Last week, every time they ran the ball, they converted.
00:59:38 And a big part of it was them using Taekwon Thornton in motion, getting the Raiders linebackers to move into a spot where they had more advantageous angles up front.
00:59:47 They could get on their double teams.
00:59:48 Once you get the push, those guys are coming into the fit like they're not in the position where they can attack and have a good angle.
00:59:54 And then guys just climbing easily shield them off like this is exactly, I think, what you're going to see.
00:59:59 It's a gap scheme. And you're using that jet motion to give the guys those angles.
01:00:04 I love that. It's also just a great combo at the point of attack.
01:00:08 I love this play, but I think like if you're saying, OK, what's a snapshot of what we could see on Sunday for the Patriots offense?
01:00:14 I think that's it because they didn't use a ton of motion before.
01:00:17 And I think that they're going to see, you know, especially against a defense like the Bills, where you can manipulate the angles of their second level.
01:00:23 And there were some I saw were like Toronto Johnson.
01:00:25 They just completely took them out of the play because they had them just like shoot out of the gap, shoot out of the box.
01:00:30 And you got a big lane. I love that you mentioned those pieces because I, I, my thought more was like, are the Pats going to lean into the motion piece?
01:00:38 But like that run, just like a simple like, you know, whether it's like one back power or whatever, like a GH counter, like I can see them running that with Ramon J.
01:00:46 Stevenson like right now.
01:00:48 So I also pick that place like, OK, like I could see New England running this.
01:00:51 So you echoing that and then also throwing the motion piece in the act that that's a that's a world you want to live in.
01:00:56 If you were on offense, those gap scheme runs manipulate the second level defenders, create leverage for yourself, force the bills to have to adjust and shoot gaps.
01:01:05 Their linebackers are athletic.
01:01:07 You know, Bernard is a tremendous processor.
01:01:09 He's great at shooting gaps.
01:01:11 He's been a huge bright spot, especially filling in for Tremaine Edmonds.
01:01:14 It was kind of a question mark what the bills were going to get at that linebacker spot.
01:01:17 He's been a legit gem with how smart he is, how quick he is.
01:01:20 He plays so fast because he processes so well and so efficiently.
01:01:25 You'll see him pre snap on the game.
01:01:27 He looks like an air traffic controller.
01:01:28 He's pointing out keys and calls.
01:01:30 He's given direction.
01:01:31 He's linking the front with the back end.
01:01:33 He's turning and talking to Terran Johnson and Hyde employer and really kind of orchestrating everything there in the middle.
01:01:39 He is that green dot guy, but he is smaller.
01:01:41 He's about 223 pounds.
01:01:43 So if you can climb to the second level and get hands on him, now he's going to make it hard to get hands on him because he's quick and he's violently smart.
01:01:49 But you can get on him by manipulating him with that jet motion and then washing down using some of these gap scheme pieces.
01:01:56 So I think it matches well.
01:01:58 And again, it ties into, you know, kind of a potential avenue to victory for that Patriots offense.
01:02:04 I love it, man, especially the Patriots, maybe inexperienced to guard, but they do have size.
01:02:09 So hopefully they can get them out to that second level, make some big runs.
01:02:13 Anthony, thank you.
01:02:14 As always, it's been an absolute treat.
01:02:17 I appreciate you the best.
01:02:18 You're smart.
01:02:19 All that good stuff.
01:02:20 But right now the floor is yours.
01:02:21 Please tell the people where they can find you.
01:02:23 You're fantastic work and any preview stuff you got coming out because there's not a lot of people who are going to preview this game better than you.
01:02:29 Awesome.
01:02:30 Thank you so much, man.
01:02:31 I'm Anthony Prohaska.
01:02:32 Find me on Twitter at Pro underscore underscore Ant.
01:02:35 That's Pro two underscores A and T.
01:02:37 I host two shows for cover one, a solo show where I have guests breaking down stuff like yourself, like Mr.
01:02:44 Taylor Kyle's who joined me on this week's episode.
01:02:46 You can find that every Tuesday night live 9 p.m.
01:02:49 Eastern on the cover one YouTube channel.
01:02:51 And then every Wednesday at 7 p.m.
01:02:53 Eastern, I co-host the film room with Eric Turner where we it's all film.
01:02:58 So I use some film on disguise coverage, but then the film room, you guessed it, is all film breaking down pieces.
01:03:04 So what we did in this episode for this week, we broke down both of the bills, touchdown drives against the Giants.
01:03:10 What worked, what didn't concept scheme.
01:03:14 Everything for me is all objective.
01:03:16 Like, obviously, I love the bills, but I just love ball and talking the X's and O's and bones and structure and scheme of everything.
01:03:23 And so if you follow me on Twitter, you're obviously going to get a lot of bill stuff from advanced metrics and film and all that stuff.
01:03:29 But I also just watch a lot of football in general and break down.
01:03:32 My timeline is basically advanced metrics, wrestling, and then a whole bunch of film clips of all 22 from the bills and anything and everything that I'm watching around the league that week in terms of like trends and schematic pieces or individual stuff.
01:03:46 So if you like ball and X's and O's and scheme and structure and objective analysis, I'm your guy.
01:03:52 It's tough watching the bills be successful, but there's a lot to be learned on your timeline.
01:03:56 Highly recommend.
01:03:57 And thank you again so much.
01:03:59 Thank you all for tuning in.
01:04:00 Really appreciate you as always.
01:04:02 Take care of yourselves.
01:04:03 Take care of each other.
01:04:05 We will see you next time.
01:04:06 Peace, everybody.
