00:00 into another live edition of the Patriots Beat podcast right here on the
00:04 CLNS Media Network. Brian Hines from Pat's Pulpit back as always with Alex
00:08 Barr from 9 to 85. The Sports Hub to break down a big week 4 Patriots matchup in
00:15 Dallas against the Cowboys but before we get into that kind of preview there was
00:20 some Patriots news, some league-wide news today because our our savior Christian
00:27 Gonzalez our first-round pick was given or awarded the NFL Defensive Rookie of
00:34 the Month which based on all the play we've seen it was very well deserved and
00:40 earned. I know Jalen Carter, Will Anderson some of those guys have got off to a
00:44 good start but what Christian Gonzalez has done here the first three weeks of
00:48 the season going up against Garrett Wilson, Tyree Kill, AJ Brown, Devontae
00:52 Smith his performance against those guys have been have been awesome and he truly
00:58 deserved that award as you know Matt Judon, Dietrich Wise all these guys said
01:03 today the silent assassin but that's a well-deserved award and probably the
01:08 first of many here for Gonzalez in his rookie year. Yeah and it's funny you know
01:11 for all the people who kind of talked about you know can Christian Gonzalez
01:16 win rookie of the year coming into the year I had that take that he can it will
01:22 be tough because generally this award goes more to front seven players great
01:27 sign great sign if you have one of those if you're sitting on one of those
01:30 Christian Gonzalez defensive rookie of the year bets obviously he's got to keep up his
01:33 level of play but Brian we've seen this a lot in in a number of different
01:38 regards around here that like just because players playing well doesn't
01:42 mean it's gonna be recognized Christian Gonzalez it is being recognized what he
01:46 just what he has done through the first month of this season this is actually
01:50 kind of blindside of me today because I thought they had one more game in
01:52 September no Sunday's October 1st which is crazy to begin with feels like it's
01:57 still July but right I was like we still got games playing September we tired I
02:02 figured this game was like the last day of September but okay no first day of
02:06 October 30 days half September so it would be September 31st that's not a
02:11 date but good for Gonzalez earned it deserves it all of it for in a little
02:18 surprising first Patriots player to win defensive rookie of the month so Mac
02:22 wanted was it November October November his rookie year one of the middle ones
02:28 the first Patriots defensive player first Patriots rookie win defensive
02:33 player of the month in over 10 years hasn't happened since 2012 so good for
02:37 him for that Mac was November November 2021 and then yeah it's Dion branch and
02:43 oh to Gerard Mayo and Chandler Jones ten years ago which so awesome Christian
02:50 Gonzalez we don't need to get in jail yeah but yeah you mentioned like those
02:58 rookie of the year the odds or whatever like usually those it's the front seven
03:03 guys because they can rack up sacks and post those high sack totals but I mean
03:08 he's got Christian Gonzalez has a sack and an interception a handful of past
03:11 past deflection so not only is he playing this like awesome coverage he's
03:16 a great fit for Bill's system but he's getting the stats to kind of help boost
03:21 maybe some of those maybe league-wide like whoever's picking these accolades
03:26 and awards like get some recognition there which always helps but yeah he's
03:31 gotten league-wide recognition he's got people like Tyree kill yeah saying all
03:36 this praise you heard Tony Romo on the broadcast saying he's one of the best
03:39 corners in the league Dallas's offensive coordinator Brian
03:44 Schottenheimer said you'd be hard-pressed to find a young corner
03:46 better than Christian Gonzalez so he somehow fell to 17 which I don't know
03:51 any of us really expected and he looks like that player we kind of all it all
03:55 expected when they drafted him so I I meant to look earlier I just pulled this
03:58 up a fan duel you're feeling good about Gonzalez still third third in the NFL
04:06 defensive rookie of the year you know odds Jalen Carter still the heavy
04:11 favorite - 110 that's - 110 and then Will Anderson plus 650 Christian
04:19 Gonzalez plus 750 so they're kind of a little close there but I don't know if
04:22 Gonzalez gonna win it like long season ago plus 750 though right now after he
04:29 wins this I I wouldn't I would think his odds would have come down I'm not
04:34 necessarily shocked that he's not the favorite just because again the
04:37 historical the historic context of this award but plus 750 I mean what are we
04:45 doing yeah I'm gonna jump on that I thought it would jump like CJ Stroud I
04:50 think he was like plus 450 yesterday and now he's the favorite at plus 310 he
04:55 was makes sense he was the offensive rookie of the month but yeah Gonzalez
04:59 had no movement on that line which I thought was kind of interesting but in
05:02 the defensive where is he for defense player here not even rookies even in
05:07 here judon's plus 10,000 I mean I'm looking quickly there's a bunch of names
05:14 here I don't see Gonzales but I'd imagine you somewhere in that there's
05:16 just a bunch of guys that are plus 10,000 buried down there somewhere but
05:20 I got my part is gonna win it and we'll get into Michael Parsons yeah that's
05:23 but um yeah with it with course I mean I'll get into Cole strange in a second
05:29 but with Christian Gonzalez I was gonna say it's just nice to have a first-round
05:34 pick who looks like a first-round pick and you just say like that's a blue chip
05:39 prospect that's a blue chip player he's a first-round pick because they haven't
05:43 really had one of those in a while and that was gonna bring me Nicole strange
05:47 here with some of his well actually hang on real quick before you do that who is
05:51 the last one that was like it because I people know where I'm at at Mac Jones
05:55 like I still think he can be the guy I wouldn't call Mac Jones an instant blue
05:59 chipper in the first they've had some in later rounds like Michael and whenu
06:04 yeah 2020 like instant hit but not a first-round Wow Brian I am going back
06:13 like high tower well technically because high tower was picked second that year
06:19 even though he's a first-round pick it's Chandler Jones yeah that's right
06:23 Chandler Jones just keeps finding his way in the conversation this week of
06:27 course he does but yeah just having one of those were those guys that you can
06:31 just like look at the whole body of work is you know physical attributes and to
06:37 say like that is a first-round pick because yeah we can transition this into
06:42 you know this week's game against Dallas with Cole strange who hasn't looked
06:48 great when he's been out there this year and he's struggling to stay out there
06:51 and healthy and he was the guy where you know he's what is he like 305 how much
06:59 does he weigh like a tick over 300 where you're his big thing coming out of the
07:04 draft I think we all said like you got to get him in the weight room whether
07:08 it's in was past offseason we were talking about like the Joe Tooney plan
07:11 like get some muscle on him because he can get pushed back pretty easily in
07:15 past protection and and it just hasn't looked good with Cole strange I don't
07:19 want to go down talk about bust yet but I don't know it hasn't looked good and
07:25 now he's hurt again and he's been limited all week in practice on the
07:30 injury report so you might not even have him for this game but yeah like the Cole
07:35 strange or Christian Gonzales it's night and day in that sense yeah it wouldn't
07:40 surprise me and I talked about this is Evan today on catch-22 it's there's the
07:45 concern about talent level I think to me the bigger concern and they're kind of
07:52 hand in hand like you said he needed to get bigger coming out we knew that he
07:57 didn't this offseason six five three ten I think he came out last year like 308
08:02 he was hurt this summer and he missed a lot of time and I think the summer would
08:07 have been important for him especially with Adrian Clem just working on getting
08:10 better and now he's still kind of banged up where he's hurt again I think the
08:15 size is something that is related to the durability and if he can't get on the
08:19 field he can't get better and this is where I will give the Patriots credit
08:23 Evan didn't want to go this far today Brian we'll see if you do we have seen
08:27 this team stick with bad draft picks arguably too long and kind of put faith
08:33 in guys that it seems that the point has been made and hurt themselves in the
08:37 process maybe Cole strange is you know if he doesn't play this week you're
08:42 getting pulled last week against the Jets maybe he is hurt maybe they don't
08:48 feel he's up to it and if they are gonna move on from him this early I almost
08:53 give them credit it was a bad pick it happened and I don't give them I'm not
08:57 saying I'm giving them credit for the pick that was a bad pick I've written
09:01 about I've talked about why I think they made that pick I think it relates to the
09:04 assumption at that time they were shifting to a Shanahan style offense
09:08 which didn't happen was never going to happen they should have never expected
09:10 that it was a bad pick but I would rather them admit it was a bad pick
09:16 move on and we'll see what would Moffy so whoever steps in there we'll see what
09:20 that guy can do but I would rather them move on and actually try to feel the
09:24 functional offense than just keep you know throwing Cole strange out there to
09:27 get beat trying to make it work right yeah cuz they've seen them do that with
09:31 guys in the past and that's frustrating yeah and it's nothing like against Cole
09:36 strange because he can't help that he was taken like with a top 30 pick but
09:40 yeah it is so frustrating that that was like you got a hit on these first
09:47 rounders based off where their team is now and the fact that not only did they
09:51 go for a guard which the whole positional value thing isn't great but
09:54 then the guard might not be able to play right it's frustrating right yeah if they
10:00 just look at it and say he can't play then and pull pull the trigger and one
10:05 of these Moffy or city so can play then yeah that credit to them but do you
10:10 think strange maybe I mean like I don't want to like David Andrews could they
10:16 could he move to center I know he has like that tackle measurables but that
10:20 seems like that might not even be in the picture but is center down the line and
10:25 play for strange here or if they do pull that that rug on him like what do you
10:31 think the future is for him even if there if there is one at all so when I
10:35 they drafted my thought maybe he'd play tackle because he is athletic and
10:40 there's more you know he'd be better about getting around the horn and stuff
10:43 like that he does have the long arms like he's built like a tackle yeah so
10:47 maybe it's that but you're already two years in with his development you got to
10:52 start over and the other thing is he's older what is he 25 26 he's 25 years old
10:58 so it's not it's not like you're working with the guy who has do you get it like
11:07 how do I phrase it all right so you want to move to tackle that's a year to
11:12 transition he's 26 now he's 27 which most often is a lot of it only played
11:17 for like 30 31 he's 27 he's in the last year concrete year of his rookie deal
11:21 and you're just starting a position switch that's a big ask I'm not really
11:24 sure what they do with him at this point yeah if he can't play I think you just
11:28 have to move on yep be interested in monitor but yeah he
11:32 doesn't two limited sessions this week after not finishing the game in New York
11:36 so he might not suit up for this one against the Cowboys and if he if he
11:41 doesn't the options you think would be Antonio Mafia City so I don't know what
11:47 you just logically I don't really know and that's Sophie I don't know if so is
11:50 healthy - he's still limited with the concussion so I don't know who else
11:54 you're really gonna put there are you leaning one of those are the other
11:58 because you know Moffe's had some issues to at left guard as you'd expect as a
12:01 rookie but he's more of that like he's tough to go through like he's kind of
12:07 the opposite of strange in that pass blocking sense where strange is gonna
12:10 get pushed back in the pocket Moffe's just gonna kind of be a wall up there
12:15 we talked so much in training camp with all these tackle question marks that you
12:19 need that solid interior for Mac to step up or you have city so who's maybe more
12:24 a little more athletic and left guard was actually his natural position at
12:28 Eastern Michigan there so if both of those guys are healthy who who's your
12:33 kind of preference there if you have one for like this game I probably go it
12:38 Antonio Moffe just cuz he's been out there there's that chemistry thing
12:41 there's that continuity thing I don't know that he has like the longest leash
12:46 I wouldn't be opposed if he's struggling at halftime you put city so in there so
12:51 might have more upside there long term I think Antonio Moffe is more of a right
12:55 guard than a left guard so I yeah I guess I'd go Moffe for this week again
13:01 just cuz so hasn't played and I just think the guy that repped last week
13:06 probably has a little bit of advantage but I don't I don't know if you want to
13:09 tell me it's city so cuz he has more upside I'm not gonna disagree with you I
13:12 could go either way on that yeah I agree but I'm sure whoever's out there is
13:16 going to get a heavy dose of Mika Parsons lined up right over him and
13:21 probably over that right tackle spot - yeah probably gonna be Vidarian low
13:25 again but that's just I mean the whole organization like you had Bill comparing
13:32 them kind of to Lawrence Taylor you had Bill O'Brien come out and say he's a top
13:36 five player in the league max said he's best player they played yeah or just the
13:43 best in the league so we all know what Mika Parsons can do but he seems like
13:48 one of those like I feel confident in the Patriots this week I think they can
13:53 get a victory here but you could also see Mika Parsons just absolutely
13:56 destroying this game and just kind of leaving their offense stuck in the mud
14:00 there is it Mika or Mika I don't like a Mika what was I thought it was Mike I
14:08 always thought it was Mike honest question let's say Mika yeah oh I think
14:14 it's Mike I don't know why I just said Mika I thought maybe I didn't hang on
14:18 let's look - no cuz like I'm not like doubting you there's been guys who
14:26 names are pronounced wrong for years and then you find out like three or four
14:30 years later it's wrong Devon a chain going at Devon Asian or something
14:33 exactly or who was the kicker that like when his whole career and then said like
14:39 yeah you're Nate um it's pronounced differently was that Martin grammatica
14:43 said it was Martine is that who was maybe was it suck up was it I'm trying
14:49 to I can't remember it is Micah though it is like I don't know I was just saying
14:52 Mika well because I'm thinking like me I was like Mika would meet and I'm
14:59 thinking like Mika Kelly right isn't that that chick's name that dated Derek
15:02 eater anyway office yeah the thing about Micah Parsons is in Bill O'Brien kind
15:09 of alluded to this I think he wanted to say this without directly saying it so
15:12 I'm gonna say it you can have the perfect you can come up we're gonna chip
15:19 them here we're gonna leave blockers in here we're gonna run misdirection and
15:22 that's gonna keep them off and we discovered this trend and blah blah it
15:26 still might not matter still might get two sacks he's just that and there are
15:33 some really good pass rushers in this league the poses miles Garrett right the
15:41 reason I think Parsons is better is a guy like Bosa a guy like Garrett a guy
15:48 like Jude on who I think does belong in that class they're gonna be off the left
15:55 tackle and they're gonna pin their ears back and go and they might have a really
15:59 deep toolbox and they're not gonna beat you the same way every time but you kind
16:02 of know where they're gonna be and more or less what they're gonna be doing
16:05 Micah Parsons can line up anywhere he can drop in a coverage he can spy the
16:11 quarterback he can rush the passer like there's no okay he's gonna be on the
16:17 left side so we're gonna shade our protection that way all day no he's as
16:21 good rushing off left end as he is off right end as he is coming up the middle
16:25 so that's where the unique challenge is and that's why as good as your game plan
16:29 is like maybe you know you can neutralize them off left tackle and
16:34 credit to Dan Quinn - he's done a fantastic job with how he's struck this
16:37 defense and built it around Parsons maybe you think like all right we can
16:41 neutralize Parsons rushing off our left tackle great now here he is over the
16:45 right card maybe you figure that out great now he's gonna come up to see gap
16:49 now he's gonna be over here now he's gonna be over there and that's it's just
16:53 too much it's just too much and if I'm the Cowboys I we just talked about Cole
16:58 strange right we still don't know what they're doing it right tackle the
17:00 Patriots I am bouncing him back and forth I'm putting them over Cole strange and
17:05 I'm putting them over for Darian low and I'm back and forth and back and forth
17:09 and back and forth until the Patriots prove they can stop one of them so I I
17:13 agree with you I think this game is sneaky winnable for the Patriots I the
17:18 Cowboys have more talent and we'll kind of get into this but it's one of those
17:23 games where even though the Cowboys have more talents on paper the things they
17:29 struggle with line up perfectly with the things the Patriots do well so the
17:34 Patriots get to play their strengths on the Cowboys weaknesses in that levels
17:39 the playing field that all being said Micah Parsons could just blow the whole
17:44 thing up yeah I mean Jude on set it today right it's kind of disrespectful
17:50 to call him just a pass rusher because he does so many other things and does
17:54 them all at such an elite level but to build build off that like you need this
18:00 offensive line because you got to run the ball in this game I think and like I
18:04 know it's the homecoming week for Zeke I think he could have a really good game
18:08 because you watched the Cardinals last weekend's when they upset Dallas like
18:13 they ran for over 200 yards they were really successful on the ground and it
18:17 was a lot of the stuff we saw the Patriots do well against New York right
18:21 getting back to the kind of their downhill gap scheme a lot of pulling
18:25 guards pulling linemen attacking this this Dallas defensive line who is
18:30 really good but they kind of you know let them go upfield and then pull these
18:34 guys and attack them that way and they had a ton of success with that so you
18:39 mentioned like the things the Patriots do well and how they can can beat some
18:43 of these guys like I think it's kind of starts on the ground this week as much
18:47 as we're in a dome it's a fast track we wanted like high-flying offense it might
18:53 be another one of those games where kind of want to you know grind it out on the
18:58 ground that's what Dallas is doing offensively they're running the ball a
19:01 lot and if you can get Zeke and you can get Ramondre going and the lines holding
19:06 up again in the run game like that that follow the Cardinals path and that's how
19:10 you might kind of beat Dallas get that upset on the road gotta be able to run
19:14 the ball another week got to be able to run the ball and one that's the only
19:17 surefire way to take Micah Parsons out of the game as a pass rusher is run the
19:21 ball run the ball sustainably run the ball repeatedly don't fall behind early
19:25 where you have to throw it keep the run game viable at all times that is the
19:29 best game plan against Micah Parsons it is really the only one that he can't
19:34 undo with his talent and I think yeah with the Zeke thing I he downplayed it
19:40 this week going back there and I was right thing to do not falling for it but
19:44 you know there's a little something and I'm sure love to go back and get him a
19:49 win - so ground game should be gear and a go had a good week last week better
19:54 week last week Dallas struggled against the run they are so aggressive against
19:57 the pass I think that is part of what makes them a team you can run on you
20:02 know late Vander Esch is still there and he's a really good run defender but if
20:05 you can work around him you're gonna find room to run the ball so I'd like to
20:08 see more I want to see Farrell Brown back at fullback get behind get that I
20:12 set put your big backs there under center and run the damn ball I think
20:18 it's one of those kind of weeks yeah you know if they're getting down by the goal
20:22 line Bill's putting Zeke back there and let giving them some chances at that to
20:26 get that touchdown but yeah he mentioned Farrell Brown another thing the Cardinals
20:32 did well so well did a lot so well on the ground was two three tight end sets
20:37 I think they're about 40% of the plays with multi multi tight end sets and you
20:41 just saw the Patriots do that they've done it a lot this year obviously with
20:45 Henry and you're sicky but then getting that 13 personnel package really going
20:49 with Farrell Brown against the Jets really opened up the run game started
20:54 hitting the play action off that and even going back to their game two years
20:58 ago against the Cowboys they were like that same usage right around 40% with
21:02 multiple tight ends on the field so another thing there just to get this
21:07 ground game going and you know run the ball and try to control the clock and
21:12 you know just beat that Dallas defense like that yeah and then you can start
21:17 hey ideally so you start with that and then I I would think the Cowboys defense
21:21 you'll have 222 rushing yards to a bad team what's not it's not meant to words
21:26 here to a bad team last week you are going to be geared up to stop there on
21:31 there's gonna be a level of overcompensation there so they're gonna
21:34 be geared in on that if you start running the ball and beating them again
21:37 and they're like what's going on couldn't stop the Cardinals I can't stop
21:39 the Patriots they're gonna be narrowing in on that and that's when boom you pull
21:43 that thing you hit it over the top for the play action so I think it all starts
21:47 all starts this week with establishing the run yep and then you got to hit
21:51 those downfield shots something you got to make the Mac has to make the throws
21:54 yeah they've struggled with we talked about it a lot on Monday after the Jets
21:59 game just their inability to get that ball downfield but I don't know Dallas
22:03 without Trayvon Diggs obviously he tore his ACL Stefan Gilmore is he's still a
22:09 really good corner but like he's what 31 32 years old like he's not the Stefan
22:15 Gilmore that we obviously saw in 2019 so I think there'll be some chances to kind
22:20 of push the ball downfield and hit some of these shots the Cardinals had a few
22:25 last Sunday against Dallas so there might be some plays to be had in the in
22:29 the past game but again you just you got to hit them right and just right the
22:33 chemistry the timing whatever it is it just hasn't been there for the Patriots
22:37 get the ball downfield you'd expect Dallas to probably play a lot of man
22:42 again on third downs they did that in 2021 you know the Jets did it last week
22:48 they had a lot of success against the Patriots just kind of man up on those
22:52 money downs and say like we're not worried about your past catchers beating
22:55 us like prove you can beat us and the Patriots have to make make those plays
22:59 happen when they get the opportunity presented to them right so to do that
23:05 are you still pop Douglas Ty Montgomery get those guys a little more involved
23:10 maybe a little less juju or yeah I mean it's man beaters out there it's a
23:15 different extents on it so I pop Douglas yes pop Douglas should be on the field
23:19 more period and statement as much as I'm on the Montgomery train and I want to
23:25 see him playing some running back because of Parsons I almost feel like
23:30 you push that to next week like we can talk about that we'll talk Cameron
23:33 Jordan's been a good player in sleek for a long time we can talk about time
23:37 Montgomery this week I want Zeke in Stevenson in the back you're probably
23:41 gonna be blocking six most of the time anyway so I don't think you're gonna be
23:43 sending the running back out the pattern that much keep keep Zeke or
23:47 Andre back there this week to block Micah Parsons long term yes I still want
23:52 to see time Montgomery get some reps at running back on third and passing down
23:54 it's like third and 839 it's certain three I get it you want a little more
23:58 ambiguity but yeah this this week blocking first pass pro first yep more
24:04 pop Douglas though get that shifty chain mover in the slot more pop Douglas good
24:09 things will happen but any other last things Patriots offense Cowboys defense
24:15 that you have your eye on or we can come I thought Kendrick Bourne had a really
24:21 good game last week I just want to see him kind of pick it up yeah it's pretty
24:24 much where I'm at with him I agree so we can hear from our wonderful friends over
24:31 at Fando quickly and then move over to the other side of the ball where'd it go

25:21 who you got tonight there's a night football Packers a home dog plus two
25:31 against the Lions yeah that I that was that was too much to take I Jordan Lowe's
25:35 played really well he's been great and I know Aaron Rodgers isn't there anymore
25:40 but I in my mind a Packers still on the line so yeah although I look so most of
25:46 the money's on Detroit which I find surprising I don't know if I'm missing
25:51 something there but surprised Detroit's kind of like the you know everyone loves
25:56 the Lions this year right yes I always feel good betting against the money
25:59 because I'm like well Vegas knows what they do they're doing right there in big
26:03 picture they always end up making money so like if everybody's betting one way
26:06 it probably means Vegas that's the side people want Vegas on so I usually feel
26:10 pretty good betting against the money but yeah I was surprised see that today
26:13 yeah yeah I like the Packers probably Jordan love his mannerisms are just like
26:18 you can tell he's watched Aaron Rodgers it's kind of it's kind of funny to watch
26:21 and then they get Christian Watson Aaron Jones back I think both of those guys
26:25 are back today so Christian Watson if we want to go back to Coles strange we can
26:30 but yeah Packers plus two over on FanDuel they're also offering a 50%
26:36 profit boost to use on tonight's game and I believe it's a no sweat same game
26:43 same game parlay - if you place any three plus leg that has a final odds of plus
26:49 400 or longer and it loses you get a refund in bonus bet so if you're eyeing
26:55 anything in tonight's Lions Packers game make sure to go over to FanDuel to
27:00 place those but we can get back to the Patriots in the Cowboys moving to the
27:05 defensive side of the ball kind of hinted at it earlier but it's the Mike
27:11 McCarthy show on offense now it's not Kellen Moore he's over in LA with the
27:16 Chargers and you're kind of seeing the impact right kind of looks like the
27:20 Patriots or they kind of want to run the ball control the clock even though they
27:24 have CD lamb and Brandon cooks and Tony oh sorry we got some interesting
27:30 breaking football news I think am I seeing this right oh really so let me
27:37 let me look sorry to cut you off there but this would be kind of an interesting
27:41 story yeah it looks like it remember how Colin Kaepernick wanted to sign with the
27:49 Jets yeah so instead it's not signed with the Jets he's been added to the
27:57 negotiations list for the CFL for the BC Lions of the CFL so what that means is
28:06 players who are NFL free agents are not also free agents in Canada if they've
28:11 played in the NFL and I felt a Canadian teams basically have to declare we're
28:17 like it's kind of like the posting system in Japan it's like you go to the
28:23 player you say we would like to negotiate a contract with you if the
28:26 player says okay I'm willing to come to Canada then that is the only team that
28:29 can negotiate with that player so Colin Kaepernick may be signing in Canada
28:34 interesting interesting I we don't need to get in a hole Colin Kaepernick thing
28:39 but I will say this I did you read the letter yeah the Jets Jets entirely I
28:45 understand what he's doing entirely to complimentary of Zach Wilson I know he's
28:50 trying to like be like no I'm not you know I'm just there and I just want to
28:53 be on the team saying you think Zach Wilson has it within himself to figure
28:57 out his game and win a Super Bowl this year yeah coming on a little strong
29:01 there like you got to be within the realm of believability but that's that's
29:08 that's interesting that'll be interesting if he ends up going to
29:11 Canada because it's people laugh like it's not a bad level of competition it's
29:16 not the NFL but it's not a bad level of competition anyway I just I saw that I
29:20 didn't even mean to react it kind of just happened yeah just to see him play
29:24 play again yeah he's got anything left in the tank right now that'll be
29:27 interesting but yeah yeah maybe something to monitor there if he ends up
29:32 with the Jets off off all that would be interesting but yeah yeah Patriots
29:38 do you know sorry let me let's let's do here you're a quarterback you can sign
29:42 one of two places the current New York Jets where you have to back up Zach
29:46 Wilson who is the unquestioned starter or you get to play in the CFL where
29:50 would you rather be honestly if I'm Kaepernick probably the CFL right so you
29:56 actually can play and show what's happening with your game yeah that's
30:02 true but um yeah Jets and Zach Wilson but yeah Cowboys offense it's the Mike
30:12 McCarthy show and you're seeing it right like yeah looks familiar looking at the
30:17 Patriots allowed the whole last month like run the ball kind of control the
30:22 clock I think they only had seven eight nine drives against the Cardinals right
30:27 and it's just they're not lighting up the scoreboard like Helen Moore always
30:31 always wanted to do it it's a different brand of football and it kind of fits
30:37 into what the Patriots want to do defensively which you know like like the
30:42 Jets and solid did last year like run the ball down down their throats like
30:45 the Patriots can can counter that with guys like Juwan Bentley Devon Godshall
30:50 has been limited so you know maybe he's good to go there in the middle we can
30:54 mention Daniel equality who also got hurt in New York he is on IR with a
30:59 torn bicep they did sign Manny Jones a defensive lineman to their practice
31:04 squad as a counter of that but if the Cowboys just want to kind of man up and
31:09 run the ball like I think the Patriots will gladly gladly accept that this game
31:13 and let them do that I don't know though like they can they can move the ball I
31:18 think that this is the Cowboys playoff and how the Patriots want to like force
31:22 their opponents to play offense right like March the way down the field they
31:25 lead the league and it plays for drive but they're comfortable so that's what
31:30 becomes interesting I think if you're the Patriots you dare the Cowboys to
31:34 take a deep shot you stack the box you blitz and you try to force them to go
31:40 over the top because that's not Mike McCarthy wants to play ball control and
31:43 he wants to win with his defense and sometimes eat like you'd think in theory
31:47 the Cowboys office is a good downfield offense I mean CD lambs just like a
31:50 great big play receiver all around Brandon Cook speedster burner
31:54 traditional deep threat Michael Gallup's your kind of big body win at the catch
31:58 point you're gonna throw it up to a 50/50 ball these are guys you're throwing
32:01 explosives to and that's how you're gonna win I'm gonna give you some
32:04 numbers here Brian intended air yards per attempt so this is how far on
32:09 average the ball is going in the air on each quarterbacks throw so completion
32:13 incompletion just how far the ball travels doesn't factor in yards after
32:16 the catch Jordan Love leads the league 10.6 more than a yard ahead of the next
32:21 closest quarterback so that in its own right is impressive Jordan Love 10.6
32:26 tied for second to Sean Watson Jalen hurts nine and a half Ryan Tannehill
32:31 9.3 to a 9.1 that rounds out your top five
32:34 Mac Jones tied for 9th with Baker Mayfield 8.3 intended air yards per
32:40 attempt max throwing the ball about 30 40 more times than Baker Mayfield has
32:44 but so pushing the ball down the field a little bit let's jump further down Sam
32:49 Howe 30th 6.7 and this is among qualified quarterbacks there's 34 Sam
32:54 Howe 6.7 Gino Smith 6.6 Joe Burrow oddly enough down here at 6.5 but I think
33:00 that's probably due to his injury or anything else yeah 33rd in the NFL of 34
33:07 qualified quarterbacks in intended air yards per attempt Dak Prescott 5.2 so
33:14 Joe Burrow at 6.5 with one leg with one leg Dak Prescott more than a yard less
33:23 per attempt in the air so here's my point even if the Cowboys are built to
33:29 throw the ball down the field and they are they don't want to do it in a lot of
33:34 their plays don't give that option make them beat you with it make them beat you
33:39 with the thing they don't want to do even if it's something they're in theory
33:42 good at if they come out they cook you on a couple deep balls to start the game
33:46 you adjust you're the underdog anyway like you got to play with some sense of
33:49 urgency here I would be stacking the box single high safety you got to tackle it
33:55 at the catch point it's gonna be a big game big test for Christian Gonzalez
33:59 tackling CD lamb but I'd stack the box take away the run take away the quick
34:04 stuff in the passing game in make Mike McCarthy do what he doesn't want to do
34:08 which is throw the ball over the top yeah cuz he might not do it he might
34:11 just sit there and keep trying to dink and dunk his way down the field yeah
34:14 yeah if they want to do that I'd let them do that and probably you know if
34:20 you do that big Juwan Bentley game right you need another performance like he had
34:24 against New York he was really awesome again you hope gotcha I was healthy in
34:27 there you'll probably still see a good amount of Anthony Jennings right because
34:31 he had a really good game against the run and yeah and then how you kind of
34:36 matching up in the secondary if you have John Jones back who's still limited with
34:41 that ankle injury kind of seems like one of those opponents where you just you
34:47 could shadow the guys right you like you have Christian Gonzalez take CD lamb
34:52 even though lambs playing most of his snaps in the slot but then you have you
34:56 know Jonathan Jones on Brandon Cook speed on speed Miles Bryant who was
35:02 playing awesome but Michael Gallup you know there's a little maybe a little bit
35:07 of physicality mismatch there but is that one of the opponents that you're
35:11 kind of just comfortable shadowing there with your three corners assuming John
35:15 Jones is healthy enough to go in this one yeah I think it makes a ton of sense
35:20 to play match cuz yeah you're gonna have Gonzalez on lamb John Jones is kind of
35:24 the perfect coverage option for Brandon cooks fast not too big I I don't love
35:28 Miles Bryant on Michael Gallup right small corner on big physical receiver
35:33 but Miles Bryant was like good last week against Alton Lazard who's a bigger than
35:38 Gallup but it's that same thing big physical receiver but Lazard's like what
35:41 six four six five Michael Gallup six one I have a plan B ready which to me would
35:49 be Jabril peppers on the line of scrimmage jamming Michael Gallup and
35:54 then Miles Bryant taking it or Kyle Duggar taking him down the field but I
36:00 don't know maybe I'm caught up in the moment I saw enough for Miles Bryant last
36:03 week that I'm like yeah all right let's see what he can do on Michael Gallup
36:06 let's see it I'm not saying stick with it the whole game but I you if you told
36:12 me he was gonna be covering Al Lazard I'd probably be like Al Lazard at a
36:14 hundred yards it's a terrible matchup for Miles Bryant a Miles Bryant kind of
36:17 blanking yeah so I mean what let's see if you keep doing it why not ride the
36:21 hot hand you're this banged up a corner like this again where you'd love to have
36:24 Jack Jones because you plug Jack Jones and on Michael Gallup that's perfect
36:28 yeah definitely they don't have Jack Jones though so I don't think there's
36:33 any great option to put on Gallup again Miles Bryant's the hot hand why not yeah
36:38 just go with it until he kind of proves he can't do it right well actually sorry
36:43 let me the right option would be to put Jalen Mills on it but they're clearly
36:46 not gonna do that so you know Jalen Mills a safety period full stop yeah
36:51 that would be a good size mismatch yeah match match up there to do that but yeah
36:56 they don't seem like they want to move move him over to back to cornerback but
37:02 one thing I wanted to mention or without Daniel Kuala here who's kind of their
37:08 sub rusher in the middle do you think we could see a little Keon White kicked
37:13 inside and some of those you know passing down situations because he hasn't
37:18 he didn't play much last week again like his snap count was kind of low but it
37:23 feels like every time he's in there he's getting one or two of those plays where
37:26 he's in the quarterbacks lap and making an impact so now that a quality is kind
37:31 of out is that a spot you could maybe see Keon White there and you're in your
37:36 mind yeah I mean I'd like to see him play more I I kind of understand why he
37:44 played less last week it was kind of a weird matchup game for him great matchup
37:48 game for him this week big physical offensive line you want to get those
37:50 athletes out there so I would like to see him play more I think seeing him on
37:54 the interior is definitely a possibility yeah and it's worth mentioning the
37:58 Cowboys line is pretty banged up too I know they got Tyler but does I say his
38:05 last name or Badazi or there's their starting center and then Zack Martin
38:10 they missed last week they returned to practice in a limited fashion today and
38:14 then Tyron Smith their left tackle is still not practicing so that's
38:18 something to monitor - if Dallas is kind of beat up there up front but I believe
38:26 that's all I had for the Patriots defense I don't know anything else you
38:30 had there uh it's pretty much where I was at with the defense I think the
38:36 Daniel Kuala a roster spot is going to be Taekwondo next week maybe I also
38:42 wouldn't be surprised we know there were reports during initial roster cuts that
38:45 they wanted to get Calvin Munson on the roster and they haven't yet and he only
38:49 has one more elevation left so I wonder if it goes to even at least temporarily
38:55 goes to months and like they rarely go to these games with 53 players my guess
38:59 is they'll sign somebody on the practice squad on Saturday they'll like and then
39:05 maybe that guy gets cut for Thornton or whatever but if not Thornton I would
39:10 think Munson yeah that's where I kind of was but we can wrap it up with special
39:16 teams because yes there's a lot going on apparently big special teams week in
39:21 Dallas and again it's in a dome so we would expect clean operations cleaner
39:27 operations and then last week which I don't know if you listen to a cord on
39:32 Tuesday but he was he said like the the paints on the field was getting on the
39:38 football which kind of led to some of those poor snaps and poor field goal
39:42 operations but in a dome so you'd expect clean clean things all around there but
39:48 Alex I know there's one big thing literally one big thing that you're
39:52 looking at on the special teams in this week so so take it away yeah I want to
39:57 see if Bryce Berger can hit the scoreboard yeah I want to see it I and
40:01 so at first I was like I it's only been hit four times it's a you know dead ball
40:05 to replay the down if he gets hit so like whatever and then I was talking to
40:10 a Patriots player today who said that sometimes the ball will scrape the
40:15 scoreboard but the refs don't call it and that can make it really hard to
40:18 return a punt so maybe he's trying to like just kiss the sky a little bit I
40:23 don't know that'll get interesting maybe it happens the Patriots it is a
40:28 reviewable play if whether or not a punt hit the scoreboard so like if you're
40:33 returning and your returner mops the punt and you think he mops it cuz he
40:38 read it wrong cuz it clipped the scoreboard and they just didn't call it
40:40 you can challenge that and boy would that be fun
40:44 Bill's so good at challenges if it's for so many different reasons and you might
40:49 be thinking like why are we talking about this on that page I haven't played
40:51 there since 2015 and I think that was I think that's their only ever game there
40:57 if I'm correct so I am like very excited to see how they handle the scoreboard
41:05 yeah that is the time they played there before that no seven was in the old
41:08 building this was built no nine so it's only happened once didn't cover the team
41:12 then was still in college so I'm very excited to see how they handle the
41:15 scoreboard yeah that'll be interesting did any of the returners you talked to
41:20 like can you just lose the ball in that scoreboard or I don't think so there's
41:25 like a gray covering on the bottom of it so it's easy to track so there's no
41:30 like light yeah it's I think it's more you might watch film on a punter but he
41:38 might punt different because of the board and I guess that's probably harder
41:41 for Cowboys returners but like I think how boys only played one home game right
41:45 so you're watching most of the film of them on the road where they're not
41:48 dealing with it and then yeah it's just being ready if it clips it you got to
41:53 adjust and you hope it gets called but it might not get called that's I wonder
41:57 how hard that is for the refs to kind of judge I mean if they're missing it
42:01 easy yeah so I was looking at it and so the ball hit the scoreboard it's it's
42:10 under the same rules as the inadvertent whistle so it's basically we're gonna
42:12 replay the down now what happened they reset the clock everything that's only
42:16 happened four times now it's happened twice in the last year year and a half
42:21 so it happened in the 20 it happened in January 2022 so the 2021 season playoffs
42:27 and then last year Jake karma karma to hit it on it for the Bucs in the game
42:32 the other two were like much earlier he's got a big lag - well it's happening
42:37 more now because I think you just have better punters in the league this is
42:39 just how it happens but so I wasn't even thinking and then yeah I talked somebody
42:43 today it goes yeah sometimes it hits it and they don't call it and so I'm just
42:46 going oh it only happens four times no it happens more than that it's just the
42:49 times it's been called so and look we talked about what a big leg right
42:53 booming sure yeah let's see how big it is and I asked him and I'll post this I
43:00 talked to him about it I talked some other guys about it will be up on 98
43:04 father sports of calm tomorrow but I asked him like is it a point of pride
43:08 with punters cuz he said he had some friends that he had gone in there and
43:11 kicked for practice or whatever played college games there you know that you do
43:14 I mean if you hit it hit it is what it is but I don't know I'd say if I was
43:19 put around when I add my name to they brag about it in their group chat that's
43:23 what I'm saying like he's probably being cool with me but like I'm gonna guess
43:26 that there's a running list of the guys who've hit it they like they're like
43:30 yeah I hit that I hit that scoreboard right there you see that yeah 90 feet up
43:35 man when Carmody hit it I guess obviously the ball still gonna be going
43:39 up but like it's not at the apex when he hit it you can go find the video online
43:43 I talked to pop Douglas about it too he didn't know balls hit it so I was like
43:47 you gotta go check this out yeah definitely probably a big warm-up thing
43:52 right like get out there early kind of see Berenger how you if you have to take
43:57 something off of it or more of those line drives or something and then
44:00 obviously the returners playing that how it feels so yeah definitely something to
44:06 monitor I wonder if Joe judge and can gave him a big big history lesson on
44:12 score on the scoreboard today I'd be interesting to sit in that meeting but
44:16 yeah always something to watch special on that special teams unit there but any
44:24 other last things Patriots Cowboys as Joe judge apparently said no one is
44:29 coming right it's up to us here for yeah so to bro peppers kind of
44:35 recharacterize it today's like there's no outside forces it's just the guys in
44:39 this locker room that have to win the games which like decent message I don't
44:44 know like whatever happened to the old we all we got we all we need yeah what
44:49 was wrong with that phrase it yes I don't know if this is what the quotes
44:54 from but like I was looking at some stuff last night and it's like some guy
44:58 from like Germany in the 1700s some like theologist or something so weird quote
45:05 oh if it works it works great if they were bought four in a row I'm gonna be
45:10 the biggest there's you know I'll be posting that quote left and right I'll
45:15 be saying it my sleep but it's a weird one it starts the Super Bowl DVD that
45:20 quote yeah yeah so anyone who didn't understand that they handed out
45:25 sweatshirts to all the players locker this week and the back said no one no
45:31 one is coming it's up to us and a lot of the guys were wearing that around
45:35 around the facility the last few days so apparently that's their rallying cry
45:40 early on this season so we'll see what happens but Alex if you got nothing else
45:46 we can wrap up this Patriots Cowboys preview and get on our way well it is a
45:52 Thursday so we've got a real quick yeah don't sound so disappointed oh we're on
45:58 the back of channel so we don't have the background but we didn't even talk about
46:01 last weekend slate which was spectacular last weekend slate was great we got
46:07 another great one this week so all right let's go to kind of carry over from last
46:11 week to this week this was the big stretch for Colorado they had Oregon now
46:15 they have USC Oregon didn't go great can they they're their 20-point dogs again
46:22 I'll get my piece first I think some people were acting like that was a
46:28 definitive what would the term be that that loss was like the definitive
46:35 statement on Dion Sanders time at Colorado like the experiment didn't work
46:39 he's a bad coach I don't think it's that Dion himself has said he probably needs
46:45 another year or two to get that program where they need to be to win national
46:49 championship I think he said needs like what seven or eight more guys yeah and
46:52 that's also part of the reason I think he's serious when he says Chaudier is
46:55 not declaring this year because he needs Chaudier to kind of figure that all out
46:59 doesn't mean Colorado's a bad team I think they're they should finish right
47:04 around you know 2025 in the AP they're probably one of the 20 call them one of
47:09 the best 30 best teams in the country there's somewhere between 20 and 30 but
47:13 Oregon's another beast they're not on the level of those guys yet they're still
47:16 too small they still don't have it in the trenches it was a fun story that
47:21 wins some some more fun games you know could they pull off an upset down the
47:24 road here they'll have Utah they'll have UCLA like those are good teams I think
47:28 they can beat Oregon was always a tall task and I think USC might be better in
47:33 Oregon yeah so I am NOT super optimistic for them this week either yeah I think
47:38 it they could maybe keep it a little closer because I think they could
47:42 probably USC's defense is a little you know easier to maybe move the ball on
47:46 than Oregon but yeah I'd still expect yeah you know watching what Bo Nix did
47:51 to that that Buffalo defense I think kale Williams will have some success
47:55 there but what are you at with Bo Nix as a NFL prospect so people who have
48:02 watched the show I was not a big Bo Nix guy at all I thought he was ridiculously
48:07 bad at Alabama I really didn't believe in him the whole road next thing which
48:14 I'll bring back in a second but the guy he was on Saturday the guy he's been
48:19 this year is not the player I saw at Auburn now he's made 50 college starts
48:24 which is absurd if you think about it he's 23 so I don't know what his
48:30 ceiling is but like I never even thought of him as an NFL quarterback now as kind
48:35 of like a Matt Jones kind of pick right like the high floor low ceiling guy like
48:39 he probably belongs now the box I still need to see him check I bring up road
48:43 Nix when he was at Auburn in his first year at Oregon he would play he'd have
48:49 some big games and so people who don't know like Bonick story highly highly
48:53 touted recruit his dad played at Auburn and was like a big deal as the
48:57 quarterback at Auburn he won some really big games for them so he goes in he's
49:00 supposed to be like the second coming he's supposed to bring Auburn football
49:03 back to relevance a guy like Bo Nix transferring out of Auburn it's not
49:10 quite like if shoulder Sanders transferred out of Colorado when Dion
49:13 was still there but it's not totally far off either that was a pretty big deal
49:17 that he'd a transfer from Auburn that it didn't work for him there he would have
49:21 some big games and you'd see the flashes but never on the road yeah he was always
49:26 a disaster on the road especially in SEC games going into those environments and
49:30 that's where the road next things cut thing comes from so that game last week
49:36 I'm watching that said it saying this is not the guy I saw at Auburn this is a
49:40 much better quarterback but that game was an onsen that game was at Oregon I
49:45 gotta see him go on the road and then I'll be like right now so I've gone
49:50 from all right I don't think he's an NFL quarterback I don't think he's trapped
49:54 we're like all right second third round pick you know maybe a team needs a
49:58 quarterback I could see it there first round and like I'm still open to him
50:02 being a first round pick but they're at Washington in two weeks they're at Utah
50:08 two weeks after that if they play in the Pac-12 they do host USC but if they play
50:13 somebody in the Pac-12 championship game that'll be neutral site bowl game
50:17 playoff game if they get there that's where I need to see Bo Nix ball out if
50:22 he goes into Seattle and goes toe-to-toe with Michael Penix who actually thinks
50:27 the best quarterback in college football was awesome last last weekend awesome
50:31 every week dropping dimes all over the field every weekend obviously yeah if
50:36 Bo Nixon go into Washington and play with Michael Penix like go toe-to-toe
50:41 with him I don't even think Oregon needs to necessarily win the game but like Bo
50:44 Nix needs to be good in it then then I'll be like okay his first round pick
50:48 and I don't I'm not gonna have him top 10 I just I don't again because his age
50:52 his size always have Williams ahead of him always have Penix ahead of him when
50:56 yours gonna be ahead of him should or if he comes out but yeah I wouldn't that
51:03 that to me is like that that's the one more box I got to see Bo Nix check what
51:07 can you do on the road yeah I'm with you Michael Penix though so for the people
51:13 who don't like Mac Jones and want to know the name you should know Michael
51:17 Penix is weird because he's a lefty and lefty quarterbacks are inherently viewed
51:24 differently you got to scheme your offense differently all of that I I saw
51:29 there was a Twitter account that compared Michael Penix to Tua they're
51:32 lefties that's it Mike Kadlik is as comparable to Tua as Michael Penix is I
51:37 if Bill Belichick or whoever is okay with a lefty quarterback like Caleb
51:43 Williams still gonna be 1-1 the only reason I feel comfortable saying he's
51:47 still locked into 1-1 is because Michael Penix is a lefty if Michael Penix was a
51:53 righty there'd be a real talk about him going 1-1 besides that like I have him
51:58 ahead of May I have my head of Sanders I have my head of yours this dude goes out
52:02 there in freaking slings the football we talked about Dallas right it's not
52:07 working they might not trust DAC they've gone to the super safe offense CD lamb
52:11 Brandon cooks Michael Gallup put a guy like Michael Penix in that offense if he
52:16 is what we think he's gonna be whoo that could be scary every I Washington I
52:23 forget who they're playing this week it's it's kind of a disappointing game
52:25 I'd apply to Arizona who's bad former Patriots assistant coach Jed fish head
52:30 coach they're trying to turn that program around got a ways to go but like
52:34 what Washington Oregon that's gonna watch that game watch it again they
52:39 might score a hundred points I'm very interested to see what the over is gonna
52:42 be in that yeah that's gonna be a really fun game I don't know if I have him over
52:45 May yet but yeah Michael Penix just weekend week out he's been awesome it's
52:50 so fun to watch may struggle the times yeah all right so hang on fan duel does
52:56 have some early odds here okay here we go oh they don't have a total yet so
53:01 it's Washington by three and a half which is about right two really good
53:04 teams ones at home they don't have a total that's that's the number I want
53:09 that's the number I want for that game 95 and a half I mean a hundred's
53:15 realistic a hundred is absolutely real it now it is Seattle so maybe the
53:19 weather gets weird but like favorable conditions absolutely realistic hundred
53:23 point game yeah that's gonna be an awesome game that's gonna be fun I think
53:30 Alabama I still don't feel great about Alabama I gotta say no I don't know
53:34 where you're at with that Brian yeah it's I mean I thought they finally
53:39 started doing some things that like Milroy was caught Milroy was comfortable
53:43 doing but like still I just don't see it sneaky good game this week Texas Kansas
53:51 yeah both undefeated I think Texas a whoop Kansas but you know Jane Daniel
53:55 maybe they're for real this time Kansas is they beat Texas a couple years ago
54:00 and then Notre Dame Duke I I feel like that's the game like Duke's a fun story
54:06 but that's the game where kind it comes crashing down but it's also Notre Dame
54:11 who doesn't win big games they get in their way as much as possible winning
54:15 big games that game could get weird wonder if Lou Holtz will be watching or
54:20 if he'll be eyes on oh so stupid hey they've only played two bad halves of
54:27 football the last two years or whatever he said right and that and that was
54:32 you're in Ohio State guy right no no you're Wisconsin you're Wisconsin
54:36 Keegan's Keegan's Ohio State it was stupid stupid thing to say in that
54:40 moment like good win celebrate the win you don't need to attack the 86 year
54:44 old man who's been in bed for three hours there's so there's such a physical
54:47 team they got one yard against ten guys but uh right exactly go go Ryan day I
54:52 guess whatever makes whatever makes you happy but yeah another good college
54:57 football college football slate as we are getting this year so many just good
55:02 so much good quarterback play in college football this year which is fun but um
55:07 yeah that'll do it from us today Patriots Cowboys on Sunday for oh five
55:15 kickoff I believe in that for these 425 right 25 I thought it was yeah oh five
55:20 for some reason but I pretty sure it's because our sports a pregame starts at
55:24 130 so normally we do 425 maybe they have another one of their do three hours
55:31 maybe another one of their later oh the Raiders is 405 for Raiders is 405
55:35 because that's just the West Coast one o'clock start that's not like a primetime
55:38 so yep 425 kick in Dallas Patriots looking to improve to two in two and
55:45 Alex and I will be back as always to break down the game on Monday but until
