Mark Titus | The Mark Titus Show
Transcript
00:00:00 today's episode of the Mark Titus show college football week
00:00:02 one is in the books and the entire country cannot stop
00:00:06 talking about one thing. The top of the Big 10 standings where
00:00:10 the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights both sit
00:00:14 atop both are in first place. Both are undefeated both have
00:00:18 do we have the two best defenses in college football TJ that's
00:00:22 what people are saying right? That's all the best quarterbacks
00:00:24 to two best quarterbacks. Yeah, everyone came away from the
00:00:28 Ohio State game saying they definitely have an answer
00:00:30 quarterback. They don't have to worry about that at all. No,
00:00:33 what what most people are talking about if you're not if
00:00:34 you're not dancing on Dabo and Brian Kelly's grave like I am
00:00:38 which is I cannot get enough of that. That was like a perfect
00:00:41 opening weekend for the hater in me. Obviously, Michigan losing
00:00:47 would have been nice but Dabo and Brian Kelly are my two
00:00:51 least favorite coaches by a mile by a mile in college football.
00:00:55 Seeing them both lose and humiliating fashion was an
00:00:58 absolute delight and I hope it happens every week. That's what
00:01:01 I'm hoping for. I will be tuning in. I really enjoyed first week
00:01:04 of college football so much that I will be tuning in next week as
00:01:06 well. And I hope to see the same thing. I hope to see both of
00:01:08 those coaches eat shit again, because I can't get enough of
00:01:11 it. I hate them both. But obviously the big story in
00:01:14 college football is the Colorado Buffaloes taking the sport by
00:01:17 storm. The Deon haters are absolutely furious. They are
00:01:22 pivoting very hard. It was a long summer of calling Deon
00:01:26 Sanders a clown saying that Colorado is a joke of a program
00:01:30 to hire a guy the ad comes out and says that we don't have the
00:01:32 money to hire him. And everybody clowned him for that. The whole
00:01:36 though. I don't mean to throw everybody into one group here
00:01:39 because some people were like, hey, let's wait and see what
00:01:41 happens. You know, Deon did have success at Jackson State. So
00:01:44 let's pump the brakes a little bit. But boy, did it sure did
00:01:48 feel like a lot of people thought this is going to be an
00:01:51 absolute disaster. Colorado comes out beats TCU, a team
00:01:55 that was playing for national championship beats him on the
00:01:57 road in week one. Ryan Konigsberg is the host of the
00:02:01 DNV our bus podcast, which is a great little Colorado football
00:02:06 podcast. He does all Colorado sports, but Colorado football
00:02:08 podcast. I've known of Ryan for a while. And every so often when
00:02:13 Colorado is relevant, I'll pop in and listen to him. Talk about
00:02:16 the buffs. But you know, obviously, football wise has not
00:02:19 been the case for a very long time. They're relevant again. So
00:02:23 I reached out to Ryan to have him on the show. We're going to
00:02:25 talk about not only the win over TCU, but what the what the
00:02:29 summer has been like what Colorado football was like
00:02:31 before Deon because this is a guy who's covered this team
00:02:34 before Saturday. A lot of people are going to be paying
00:02:38 attention moving forward, but he is a diehard CU fan and he does
00:02:42 the DNV our bus podcast, which is great. So as Deon continues
00:02:46 to rack up W's go listen, Ryan, we'll have fun talking to him.
00:02:48 Also, the United States lost to Lithuania in the FIBA World Cup
00:02:51 that literally nobody is watching nobody. But everybody
00:02:55 saw that we they saw that we lost to Lithuania. We are not
00:02:58 knocked out. We are still playing in this thing. We just
00:03:01 beat the snot out of Italy. We are now on to the Final Four.
00:03:04 We will play the winner winner of Germany and Latvia. But I
00:03:06 you know, maybe I'll talk about that a little bit. I don't know.
00:03:08 We'll see. We'll see. Do people care? I don't know. I'll say
00:03:11 I'll, I'll start talking about it. And then about halfway
00:03:13 through, I realized nobody cares. And I'll hit the bell.
00:03:17 I'll hit the bell button and we'll get out of it. But we'll
00:03:19 talk about that a little bit. Also, I want to talk about this
00:03:20 ACC, Cal Stanford and SMU joining the ACC. I got I got
00:03:26 some thoughts on that, that I want to hash out before we get
00:03:29 to Ryan Koenigsberg. A little hodgepodge show trying to touch
00:03:31 a little bit of everything going on in the sports world. Fun
00:03:34 conversation with with Ryan Koenigsberg coming up. Let's get
00:03:37 into it. All right, before we talk a little Colorado football,
00:03:41 before we talk about really anything else, mostly sports,
00:03:44 Brandon Walker and I doing our show, our live show on YouTube.
00:03:47 We have a time we have announced the time. For those of you that
00:03:50 live in the barstool universe and consume a lot of barstool
00:03:53 content, you might have been aware that there was a
00:03:56 controversy as to what time we might go. Brandon and Rico got
00:04:01 into a fight on the case race on the yak. In the end, the dust
00:04:05 settled, cooler heads prevailed, and we are going to be doing our
00:04:09 show at 10 Eastern, nine central in the am every single morning,
00:04:13 Brandon and I, Monday through Friday, starting on Tuesday,
00:04:17 September 12. We will be going live. So go subscribe to how
00:04:22 would you just type in mostly sports. The link will be at the
00:04:24 top of the description. There we go. It's a new channel, mostly
00:04:27 sports channel with Mark Titus and Brandon Walker. I'm very
00:04:29 excited about it. I think it's going to be a ton of fun.
00:04:31 Brandon's great. I do find that that a lot of people hate one of
00:04:35 one of us, you know, that's good for the show. That's good for
00:04:38 the show. That's good for the show. I really like people like
00:04:41 Titus is boring. I love BFW. He brings the juice and then other
00:04:45 people like Brandon's the moron and I don't know what they say.
00:04:47 You've probably experienced this. But when people dislike you
00:04:49 online and you work in like a sports show environment, you'd
00:04:52 some of your highest viewed episodes are when you're eating
00:04:54 the most crow. Like when I used to work on our Yankees podcast,
00:04:57 like our best viewed episode every year was the episode right
00:05:00 after the Yankees get eliminated from the playoffs. Right. So if
00:05:02 you guys can both channel having haters on either side of the
00:05:06 same aisle, whether one week you like Arkansas and he doesn't,
00:05:09 and then the next week, you know, he's flip, we'll have a
00:05:11 million viewers every episode.
00:05:13 That's right. That's right. That's how I mean, that's how
00:05:15 all these other networks have cracked the code is they just
00:05:17 pick an issue, flip a coin before the show. Like, alright,
00:05:20 so you're pro Jordan, you're pro LeBron go argue. And that's how
00:05:23 that's how it works. Um, yeah, my my I think like the most
00:05:26 watched thing I ever had before I got into the barstool world
00:05:29 was when Ohio State lost to oral Roberts, right? I was on a live
00:05:32 stream. Just dying. People love watching people die on camera.
00:05:38 No, that's it's a great dynamic, Brandon, because we, we have I
00:05:43 love the chemistry we have. I love the way his brain works.
00:05:47 And but at the same time, we disagree about just about
00:05:49 everything. So that makes it fun. And like I said, most
00:05:52 people seem to like one of us and not the other. And that's a
00:05:54 great combination. Because if your team Titus, watch the show
00:05:58 and watch me dunk on Brandon, if your team Brandon, I'll probably
00:06:01 crow a lot and you'll get a pump your fist along with Brandon as
00:06:04 he's making me also if your team Brandon, why are you listening
00:06:08 to my show? Why are you watching this right now? You know, team
00:06:10 Titus only, you know, what are you doing here? Get out. You've
00:06:13 come to the wrong place. Get out of here. So it's a team Titus
00:06:15 space. Mostly sports though, starting next Tuesday. Very
00:06:18 excited about that TJ will be working on it. He'll be our
00:06:21 producer, it'll be live. We will put it on a podcast feed. So if
00:06:24 you're a podcast person, and you don't want to watch live, you
00:06:27 can still listen, you'll still be able to watch obviously on
00:06:29 demand, but we're really going to lean into the live element of
00:06:33 it all. And I think as the show progresses, and we start to
00:06:36 figure out what works and what doesn't, you know, there will be
00:06:40 elements that will probably be heavily influenced by the live
00:06:44 nature of it, if that makes sense. We'll be taking callers,
00:06:46 I'm sure at some point we'll be, you know, live reacting to news,
00:06:50 all that sort of thing. So I encourage people to watch live
00:06:52 if you can, but if not, it'll be a podcast and it'll be on
00:06:54 YouTube forever. So there you go. Before we talk to Ryan
00:06:57 Konigsberg. I have some thoughts on on Cal and Stanford, and SMU
00:07:02 to the ACC that I want to talk about because this is, it kind
00:07:05 of like flies under the radar this not really, but at this
00:07:08 point in time, like realignment is already, you know, like the
00:07:11 first cuts the deepest and once, once UCLA and USC, join the big
00:07:16 10, I think at that point, you're just kind of like numb
00:07:18 to this sort of thing. And we've spent so much time leading up to
00:07:21 the start of football, talking about the the conference
00:07:24 realignment going on that I think Cal Stanford, SMU joining
00:07:28 the ACC at a time when football is about to kick off, I guess
00:07:31 week zero, it already happened. It doesn't really move the
00:07:35 needle for people. They're like, whatever, I don't care. It's
00:07:37 this is all already. It's all I can't be surprised anymore. And
00:07:42 plus, there's real football on so I'm going to watch that. Um,
00:07:44 but I wanted I wanted to bring it up because I, I knew it was
00:07:49 coming. I knew, you know, like there were reports out there
00:07:52 that that the ACC was interested in this and this might be
00:07:55 happening. I mean, I think I talked about it on a show not
00:07:57 too long ago that I said, these are the rumors. We'll see what
00:08:00 comes to fruition. And when it does, we'll talk about it then
00:08:03 now it has come to fruition. And it's a bummer for me because
00:08:07 I'm not gonna I'm not gonna like shit on the ACC and say that it
00:08:11 was stupid to do this. You know, they're ruining college sports.
00:08:14 I'm not going to clutch my pearls anymore. I've already
00:08:16 done that about all these other moves. The time for pro pro
00:08:20 clutching is over. This certainly doesn't. If you're
00:08:23 someone who's okay with every other move in conference
00:08:25 realignment, but damn it, this one is the one that we were
00:08:28 like, this is disgusting. I don't know. You're you're a very
00:08:32 rare breed. I'll put it that way. But it's sad for me
00:08:35 because I think the writing is very clearly on the wall that
00:08:38 the ACC is done and the ACC is the preeminent now biggies fans
00:08:44 will tell me to pump my brakes. But the ACC is the preeminent
00:08:49 college basketball conference historically it is it is the
00:08:52 conference I think of certainly when I think of college
00:08:56 basketball conferences now, again, biggies fans would say we
00:09:00 had you know, a great run and you don't understand our
00:09:02 rivalries. I get the biggies point of view. I think the ACC
00:09:06 is history going back as far back as it does. The programs
00:09:10 that have been in that conference and just like growing
00:09:14 up. Not an ACC guy, I just found myself gravitating towards the
00:09:19 ACC. The ACC was like a national conference. And the big East is
00:09:23 great. And I respect the hell out of the big East. And I love
00:09:25 the big East even the current big East is is an incredible
00:09:28 basketball league and I'm excited for it this this
00:09:30 upcoming season. But the ACC to me was like the national
00:09:35 basketball conference. It was it was the conference for everybody
00:09:38 to like everybody that if you're a Pac 12 basketball fan, you
00:09:42 were still watching a lot of ACC basketball. If you're a big 12
00:09:44 basketball fan, you're still watching a lot of ACC
00:09:46 basketball. I don't know for sure if that was true with the
00:09:50 biggies. Now the biggies had a lot of great teams a lot of
00:09:53 great years where you know, they'd have x number of top 10
00:09:56 teams top 25 teams. The biggies what made the biggies so great
00:10:01 in its heyday was the regional rivalry aspect of it. And I
00:10:06 think those rivalries were respected nationally, but they
00:10:09 didn't like the Duke Carolina. I feel like you could you could
00:10:14 pull kids that are growing up in like Vegas and ask them Do you
00:10:17 like Duke Carolina and they have opinions on that. Whereas like a
00:10:20 Syracuse UConn game say that's not I never cared when I was
00:10:24 growing up. I love the rivalry. I cared about the I cared about
00:10:26 the game. I wanted to watch. If you asked me if my more UConn
00:10:29 or Syracuse I was like, I don't know. I've never really given it
00:10:31 much thought. Duke, Duke and Carolina was a rivalry that was
00:10:35 like you draw the line in the sand and even kids in Indiana
00:10:37 were like I like Duke or I like Carolina. Same with Maryland
00:10:41 Maryland would play Virginia or Maryland to play Duke or you
00:10:44 know and like you're either like I like this. I like what
00:10:47 Maryland represents in the ACC. I don't like what Maryland
00:10:50 Maryland's obviously in the Big 10. But I'm just speaking like
00:10:52 on the historical scale of this the ACC to me was college
00:10:58 basketball and this move adding Cal and Stanford and SMU to the
00:11:03 ACC not to shit on these programs too much but this is a
00:11:08 desperation move both from them and from the ACC. It's pretty
00:11:11 it's pretty obvious that that that the ACC at a time when you
00:11:16 need to build your football brands obviously to survive. I
00:11:23 don't really I mean, I'm in two minds about it because like, I
00:11:27 think if the ACC sat pat and did nothing, they're screwed. They
00:11:30 had to do something they had to the writing was on the wall.
00:11:33 Florida State and Clemson have been begging to get out of this
00:11:35 conference for a while now they're going to find a way to
00:11:37 get out before the grant of rights is up. So like the ACC
00:11:42 sees what's going on and that there's a football arms race.
00:11:45 They are severely behind this arms race. Adding Cal and
00:11:48 Stanford and SMU is not going to move the needle in that regard.
00:11:51 But I think that like, what I was hoping for, because they had
00:11:57 to do something but what I was hoping for was more of like a
00:12:00 concentrated approach to this that and maybe this is the I'm
00:12:05 splitting hairs at this point because maybe it was just
00:12:07 inevitable at all times that the ACC was just not going to
00:12:10 survive the conference realignment in the end. But what
00:12:13 I was what I would have hoped for is saying, All right, we're
00:12:16 not going to win the football arms race. There's there's no
00:12:18 way we can do this. But what if we can kind of like copy what
00:12:21 the big 12 seems to be doing, which is like the big 12 is
00:12:24 building like a basketball Super League. The ACC is college
00:12:27 basketball historically, it's not been as great in recent
00:12:30 years. But you know, the cache is still there. The ACC is
00:12:34 still still moves the needle. And from a basketball
00:12:38 perspective, if you're going to add teams, because you, you do
00:12:41 have to add teams apparently to show that you're strong and you
00:12:45 know, we are growing, we're not losing teams. We're not
00:12:48 bleeding. Um, if you're going to add teams, I think that the
00:12:52 one you take one or two approach, you either you either
00:12:55 go for the basketball side of this, where you say, we're
00:12:59 going to we're going to build basketball brands, we're going
00:13:01 to try to identify, maybe add Gonzaga, you know, like, that's
00:13:04 that's crazy. That's if you're going to go crazy and get West
00:13:06 Coast teams, maybe extend an invitation to Gonzaga. Maybe
00:13:10 try to poach like some of the big e schools, maybe I don't
00:13:12 know, but you're just go go at it from a standpoint of like,
00:13:16 we are basketball. Let's lean into the basketball side of
00:13:19 things. Let's try to survive that way. Or, and or and slash
00:13:24 or, I think there needed to be some emphasis on regionality
00:13:29 where try to as the rest of the country is is growing or the
00:13:35 rest of the conferences in the country are just going coast to
00:13:38 coast. And the big 10 is absurd at this point, instead of
00:13:42 trying to like be a lesser version of the big 10. tighten
00:13:46 up a little bit circle the wagons and say like, we are the
00:13:49 ACC we are like the we're we're basically like they to me like
00:13:52 the ACC kind of represented the south but like it was like, more
00:13:56 of the the the better school like it was like the the
00:14:00 prestigious schools of the south were like, if I was an ACC fan,
00:14:04 I imagine at some point I probably looked at SEC and I was
00:14:06 like, you guys are good at football. Yes, but all of your
00:14:08 alums of all your schools are morons. Whereas those of us that
00:14:12 went to Virginia and those of us that went to North Carolina and
00:14:14 those of us that went to Duke and, and Wake Forest, we are
00:14:17 elites and whatever, whatever that identity is like lean into
00:14:21 that try to figure out like what that is. Maybe in the end, it
00:14:26 would have been futile anyway, but like adding adding Cal
00:14:28 Stanford SMU does does nothing other than just create a
00:14:32 conference that is coast to coast. But unlike the big 10,
00:14:35 who also did this, the big 10 is going to make money hand over
00:14:39 fist. They also have multiple teams on the west coast other
00:14:42 than just when the big 10 added added USC and UCLA. That was
00:14:46 that was so stupid, because those two schools now at the
00:14:48 play East Coast all the time. Then you add Washington, Oregon,
00:14:51 weirdly, like kind of made sense to that's suddenly not as weird,
00:14:55 because now you got four schools on the on the west coast that
00:14:58 makes scheduling actually a little bit easier. And if now
00:15:00 that you have a larger group of teams on the west coast, I don't
00:15:03 know what this solves basically from the ACC other than just to
00:15:05 say we are doing something and signify to the rest of the
00:15:09 schools in the ACC that we're not dead yet. But at the same
00:15:13 time, Carolina, Clemson and Florida State all voted against
00:15:17 this. I think it's very clear that they're out they want out
00:15:19 there. They're going to be out the second they can jump. And
00:15:23 basically Cal Stanford SMU are the backfill for this. I don't
00:15:26 want once once Carolina Clemson or FSU leave, the floodgates are
00:15:30 open, the ACC is done. And I think it's worth just kind of
00:15:32 pausing. I know football just got underway. I know nobody
00:15:35 gives a shit about this anymore. You just want to talk about the
00:15:37 sports that are going on in front of your in front of your
00:15:40 face. But I'm sad because like I see this as an act of desperate
00:15:44 I see it as an act of desperation from Cal and
00:15:45 Stanford, by the way, who I don't think needed to do this. I
00:15:48 don't think they needed to join a conference. I actually
00:15:50 expected them not join a conference. Maybe there's still
00:15:52 a world where they are hopeful that they'll get the Big Ten
00:15:55 invite eventually when the ACC dissolves. I thought Cal and
00:15:58 Stanford were just going to sit on their hands, shrug their
00:16:00 shoulders, say we don't need a conference anyway. We don't
00:16:03 really care about sports that much anyway. And then maybe
00:16:06 there was a world down the line where the Big Ten would invite
00:16:08 them for the academic to research, all that sort of
00:16:11 thing. And then they would get they would they would accept
00:16:14 that invite. I don't know why they would go to the ACC. I
00:16:16 don't know why the ACC would want them. It just wreaks of
00:16:18 desperation from all sides. And it makes me sad and it's worth
00:16:21 pointing out and and at a time when no one cares and week one
00:16:26 is underway. I want to point out because I just I just see the
00:16:30 writing on the wall that that the great the best basketball
00:16:33 conference historically is on its deathbed in my estimation.
00:16:39 Now, I don't know how much longer it's you know, the grain
00:16:42 of rights is still 1000 years away from expiring. So we'll
00:16:46 see, I guess I don't know, maybe the maybe Clemson and Carolina
00:16:49 and FSU have to stick around and they can't figure their way
00:16:51 out. But it's just a matter of time. And that is that is an
00:16:55 absolute bummer to me because, you know, obviously, obviously
00:16:58 Carolina Duke is at stake. I think they're still going to
00:17:00 play once a year, even if they they did end up in separate
00:17:03 conferences, they would still figure out a way to play it. I
00:17:05 know. But yeah, it's just sad. And it's something that I think
00:17:09 most people are just gonna shrug their shoulders and not care
00:17:13 that much about because we've already broken the the dam has
00:17:17 already been broken. And this doesn't really the ACC these
00:17:21 ACC moves aren't really going to shake up the college football
00:17:23 landscape that much. So it's not worth talking about that much in
00:17:27 that regard. But from a basketball standpoint, it's a
00:17:30 huge freaking bummer. And yeah, that's it. And I just keep going
00:17:34 back to what, uh, what Jeff Schwartz and I talked about
00:17:37 where we're counting with the Pac 12 is now down to two schools,
00:17:40 which means that 10 schools, 10 schools in the Pac 12 were deemed
00:17:45 desirable enough for power conferences to say we want you,
00:17:48 you you move the needle by adding you, you will move the
00:17:51 needle. And yet, those 12 banded together couldn't figure out a
00:17:56 way to sustain sustain them. So that part of it breaks my brain.
00:18:01 That part is like, I don't know, in a weird way, it makes me
00:18:05 hopeful that like, maybe there is there is a chance down the
00:18:08 line that these schools revive the Pac 12. And like 40 years,
00:18:12 you know, that they all everybody goes their separate
00:18:15 ways goes to the conferences, goes to their new conferences.
00:18:18 They all have like varying levels of success, but they all
00:18:22 have like brands that that matter to people nationally. And
00:18:25 then they all look at each other and say, Should we should we run
00:18:27 this back and get the Pac 12 back together? That would be
00:18:29 pretty sick. So I'm rooting for that. But uh, yeah, bummer,
00:18:32 bummer to see that happen. I mean, good for SMU. I guess I
00:18:35 guess that's the one. There's one like positive out of all if
00:18:38 there's if there's one thing that I feel like somebody won,
00:18:41 because I feel like the ACC lost. I feel like Cal lost. I
00:18:44 feel like Stanford lost. The ACC I guess had to do something. So
00:18:48 in that regard, I don't know, maybe they didn't lose. They
00:18:51 just delayed their loss a little bit longer. But it tells me this
00:18:56 is a very desperate move. And SMU would be the ones the one
00:19:01 winner out of all this, I guess SMU is is now going to be in the
00:19:04 ACC. SMU is a good basketball program, by the way, at times
00:19:06 like that would be that would that would be cool. But Cal, it
00:19:10 solves nothing. Cal and Stanford solve absolutely nothing. It
00:19:12 creates more problems. And it just it puts a bandaid on a
00:19:16 bullet wound. And unfortunately, I don't think that's that's
00:19:21 going to be the answer. So that's really it. And I'm bummed
00:19:23 out about it. But enough about that. Let's talk to Ryan
00:19:26 Konigsberg about the about this, this this rise of Deion Sanders,
00:19:30 the rise of Colorado football. Have they won the national
00:19:33 championship already? Is Colorado should we just end the
00:19:35 season is I like how the the Deion haters did. The Deion
00:19:40 haters were like, this is a joke. This guy won't win
00:19:42 anything. I can't wait till they start Oh, and six, then Colorado
00:19:46 wins one game. And then suddenly, this is why I love
00:19:49 haters because there was no like, Oh, shit, I was wrong.
00:19:52 It's like pivot, pivot, pivot. Now all of a sudden TCU sucks.
00:19:56 Now all of a sudden, okay, it was one game. But that doesn't
00:19:59 mean it's like one game. They won one game last year, they've
00:20:02 already matched with total. There'd be the team that was
00:20:04 playing for the national championship. I don't know if
00:20:06 you're a Deion hater, you're a loser at this point, you lost
00:20:09 the game is like, Colorado could lose every single game the rest
00:20:12 of the year by 50. He's already won. He's already made a huge
00:20:15 impact on Colorado football. You've lost pack it up, find a
00:20:18 new can I suggest Brian Kelly and Davo those are those are
00:20:21 great coaches to hate, hate them. I provide that that hater
00:20:25 bandwagon will never be full enough. Please join me. I will I
00:20:29 will show you the way. But at this point, Dion silence the
00:20:33 haters. But at the same time, I want to talk to Ryan about where
00:20:36 Colorado goes from here and what the expectation should be and
00:20:38 all that. So here it is a conversation Ryan Konigsberg.
00:20:41 All right, joining me now is Ryan Konigsberg. dnvr buffs
00:20:45 podcast. He's a he's a CU alum. And he is as I said earlier in
00:20:50 the show, he is a guy who was paying attention to Colorado
00:20:52 football before Saturday, which is a rarity that makes you one
00:20:56 of how many people Ryan how many people the bandwagon is getting
00:21:00 full?
00:21:00 Yeah, it's a little crazy now. And it's funny because you know,
00:21:06 that like Colorado has a good fan base. But it's been beaten
00:21:10 down for so long that like, last year was honestly the last straw
00:21:14 for a lot of people. So like the bandwagon got extra extra small
00:21:18 after last year one and 11. Like, I had friends cancel their
00:21:21 season tickets, and now they can't get them back.
00:21:23 Whoops, terrible, terrible investment there. Um, so what
00:21:29 have what have the last few days been like for you just
00:21:31 personally as a guy who's like so invested in this program? And
00:21:36 you're at the game right at TCU. You went to the game?
00:21:39 What just walk me through my voice a little bit correctly.
00:21:44 Walk me through the emotional whirlwind that, you know, from
00:21:48 take me from like Friday night to now. And what that's been
00:21:51 like for you as a CU bus fan.
00:21:53 Yeah, I'll take you back even a little bit further just to set
00:21:58 the stage here. When coach prime got hired, you know, we didn't
00:22:04 realize like the cultural phenomenon that comes along with
00:22:08 him. It's not just buffs fans were reenergized. It's coach
00:22:13 prime fans from all around the country are now deeply invested
00:22:18 in Colorado football. So you know, we we do shows here at the
00:22:21 end of the hour every day, but we were doing the buff show live
00:22:24 like once a week, we were like, we got to start doing this live
00:22:27 every single day because the the audience honestly went from like
00:22:31 100 to 10,000 overnight. So we're talking about this all off
00:22:38 season, you know, and there's so much talk and every transfer
00:22:42 that comes in, we break them down and we're talking about
00:22:44 this so much. And you start to just like question, like, is it
00:22:48 really going to live up to the hype? You know, like, you want
00:22:51 to trust coach prime so much because everything he says is he
00:22:54 says with such conviction, and he has so much swagger and
00:22:56 you're like, all right, now that we're getting close to the
00:23:00 actual game coming, like, God, I hope they deliver because we've
00:23:03 been hyping up this team, you know, for six months now. So
00:23:07 honestly, like them delivering and living up to everything that
00:23:11 we thought they could be was incredible. But the best part of
00:23:15 it all was being in the stands with my buddies who you know,
00:23:18 we've been watching Colorado football forever, who like
00:23:21 weren't quite there yet. Like, you know, I was a little bit
00:23:25 further down the road because I've been a little bit closer to
00:23:28 the program. And they're just like, I don't know, man, like,
00:23:32 how are we going to turn this around from one and 11 last year
00:23:34 and then just be good right away. Like, I'm all in on coach
00:23:37 prime, but I just don't know if it's going to be that soon. And
00:23:40 so like, looking around, looking in the stands at my, at my
00:23:44 buddies as like Travis Hunter is doing something remarkable or
00:23:47 should or is dropping another perfect dime, like their minds
00:23:50 just being blown was really, really cool. And, you know, I
00:23:54 just think after the game was, was just fun to like have it all
00:23:58 pay off and you know, gets to go dig up the receipts of people
00:24:01 who didn't believe.
00:24:02 Boy, are there a lot there was there was a ton of skepticism
00:24:06 nationally. What was the, I mean, you kind of touched on it
00:24:08 right there, but like, what was the skepticism? Were there
00:24:12 haters in Boulder? Were there haters? Do you know of people
00:24:15 that were like, this is, this is not going to work? Or was it
00:24:20 just like cautious optimism? Like, how would you describe the
00:24:25 overall set from, from the moment Deon Sanders is hired to
00:24:28 when you actually see the on-field product? Your, your
00:24:31 sense of the fan base? Was it just full steam ahead? We love
00:24:34 this guy. We believe in him or yeah.
00:24:36 It was. And I think what people have to realize about why that
00:24:43 happened is because of how down bad the program was like, we
00:24:48 were looking for anything, any semblance of hope. And you see
00:24:52 like the way that college football has turned in just the
00:24:54 last couple of months. Like I remember feeling, and I think I
00:24:57 even tweeted it out after they fired Carl Durrell, like this
00:25:00 next hire is the most important hire in program history because
00:25:03 college football is about to change dramatically. You've got
00:25:05 all of this conference realignment happening. And so
00:25:09 like, see you fans were as down bad as a fan base can possibly
00:25:13 be. And like, honestly worrying about what even is the future
00:25:16 of the program. Is there a future of the program? So the
00:25:19 second that, that coach prime gets hired, like everyone's on
00:25:22 board. And I, I remember seeing a lot of people saying stuff
00:25:26 like, I just don't know if he's a cultural fit in Boulder, if
00:25:28 people are going to rally around him. And I'm just like, yeah, no
00:25:31 one cares. Like everyone just wants to win at any cost.
00:25:34 Yeah. As it turns out, like the, the culture of Boulder is the
00:25:37 same as the culture of every other place in America, which
00:25:40 is, we just want to like win and be relevant and that's it. And
00:25:43 as long as we do that, like, we don't care who, we don't need a
00:25:46 granola hippie, you know, from cut from the Boulder cloth
00:25:49 coach coaching our team. We just need a guy who can bring some
00:25:52 juice to the program. And he did that. That's why I was, I was
00:25:55 saying like, whenever I would get asked about it all summer, I
00:25:58 was like, I don't know how much he actually has to win. I think
00:26:01 the fact that, that people spent the summer, if you were doing
00:26:04 like a college football show, you were talking about Deion
00:26:06 Sanders this summer, you were talking about the Colorado
00:26:08 Buffaloes football program that won one game last year. That has
00:26:11 not, you know, been, been great. You know, in the nineties,
00:26:14 Colorado good teams or whatever, but it's been a while since
00:26:17 Colorado has popped nationally. And just that alone, if Deion
00:26:20 would have, there's still a lot of football left to be played,
00:26:23 but if hell, if you win three games this year, it's already,
00:26:27 he's already kind of one or already kind of like done what
00:26:30 he's been hired to do, which is just like reinvigorate the
00:26:32 program. Right. Isn't that like a fair,
00:26:34 yes, a hundred percent. I mean, they won within weeks after
00:26:41 hiring coach prime, like, like the merch sales were off the
00:26:44 charts. They sell out the spring game. Like I remember reading an
00:26:48 article a couple of weeks ago that was like the coach prime
00:26:50 experiment will be a failure in Boulder. And I was like, ah,
00:26:53 you're missing the point. It was already successful. But yeah.
00:26:56 If coach prime took a job at, you know, to go coach, you know,
00:27:01 the 49ers tomorrow, we would look back at the coach primary.
00:27:04 I don't say that was a success,
00:27:06 which is wild to say, cause he's only won one game. So I guess,
00:27:11 uh, after, after now that you've seen the team on the field, um,
00:27:15 how, how have your expectations changed and have your
00:27:20 expectations changed? And if they have, how have they
00:27:22 changed for, for enough about the hype, just like what this
00:27:25 team can be, what this Colorado Buffalo's team can be between
00:27:28 now and the end of the season.
00:27:29 Yeah. It's funny because, you know, people that know me will
00:27:34 tell you, like, I am the single most optimistic person about
00:27:38 Colorado football that there, that, that there will ever be.
00:27:42 Um, and you know, even through the darkest of times, I was
00:27:45 like, ah, maybe we can find a way to six. Like I'm seeing the
00:27:48 path. Um, and what, what's crazy about so far with coach prime
00:27:53 is like every single thing he's done has exceeded. I think even
00:27:57 the highest of expectations, uh, that happened at least within
00:28:01 the fan base, like the true fan base, it's like, okay, we know
00:28:04 he's going to be able to recruit. Oh, he goes and gets
00:28:06 the number one transfer portal class. It's like, oh wow. He's
00:28:08 really recruiting, you know, everything he's done. So like
00:28:11 we did our show, uh, the last show before the season started.
00:28:15 And I was like, you know, I think like I see this team going
00:28:17 six and six. And I felt like that was very optimistic at the
00:28:21 time. And now you look at that and it's like, well, somehow
00:28:23 they're already ranked number 22 in the country and like six
00:28:27 wins almost feels low. So like it's a constant sliding scale
00:28:32 where now that I've seen the product on the field, honestly,
00:28:35 from a football standpoint, I'm just like, okay, well, they're
00:28:37 going to be able to score with just about anyone. Um, that
00:28:40 offense is high power. They've got speed. They obviously have
00:28:42 the quarterback. Um, they have issues. Like it's not like
00:28:45 they're a perfect team. You know, I think there's going to
00:28:48 be some teams that have run the ball on them. And maybe if the
00:28:50 pass rush gets cooking on the other side, it might make
00:28:52 things tough, but we're talking about, you know, a pack 12 that
00:28:55 has a lot of good teams and a lot of good quarterbacks, but I
00:28:59 don't see powerhouse other than Utah is obviously, you know, a
00:29:04 different breed, I think in the pack 12. And then you have USC
00:29:07 with Caleb Williams, who's always, who is kind of a similar
00:29:11 team to Colorado in that they have all the offensive explosion
00:29:14 and problems on defense. So now, as I look through it, I'm like,
00:29:16 okay, I don't think there's a single game that you completely
00:29:20 count them out of after what you saw from an offensive standpoint
00:29:23 from them. Uh, and I I'm, I'm starting to feel like six, it
00:29:26 might be low. Yeah. Yeah. It's funny how that works. Right.
00:29:28 And it's also funny how weirdly that's enough, like just, just
00:29:33 having a team. I imagine once you've watched a one 11 team and
00:29:36 I went to, I went to the Colorado USC game last year and
00:29:41 I think Colorado like hung around for a little while, but,
00:29:44 um, yeah, boy, boy, that, that, that was, yeah, they were a bad
00:29:48 football team. And even like, just watch, I, I, it always
00:29:51 cracks me up when you watch like a, a team, that's not a good
00:29:53 football team warming up versus a team that's not good. And just
00:29:57 like, it's night and day how big and fast and football is one of
00:30:00 those sports where the basketball doesn't always work
00:30:02 that way. Um, yeah, but football is like a, what I call the
00:30:06 airport test Ryan, where you could just watch two football
00:30:08 teams walk through an airport and you can point out the better
00:30:10 football team immediately. That's how I felt watching
00:30:12 Colorado at USC last year. I was like, yeah, that team is, that
00:30:15 looks like a high school team compared to those guys. Um, but
00:30:18 now that we're here, just going into a game every single week
00:30:22 and thinking we have a chance that I imagine that's, that's
00:30:24 all you really need. And, and whether, and that's kind of
00:30:26 where I'm at with it as, as a guy who doesn't care one way or
00:30:29 another, if Colorado wins is I imagine that if yeah, you, you
00:30:33 play USC and Oregon coming up here, you'll lose both of those
00:30:36 games. Say like, I still think you're, you're coming out of
00:30:38 that saying we're fine for the rest of the season, which I
00:30:41 imagine for you, that's all you really could have dreamed of.
00:30:44 And you're one of the, the coach prime era.
00:30:46 A hundred percent. And it's so funny because, you know, coach
00:30:50 prime has all these supporters everywhere. And he also has like
00:30:53 all these haters who can't stand the guy. Uh, and throughout the
00:30:57 off season, they're saying like all this hype just to win three
00:31:00 games or like some people said like, LOL, they're only going to
00:31:04 go six and six, like calm down. I'm like, bro, if they go six
00:31:07 and six, I'll be crying. Like I'll actually shed tears when
00:31:11 they win the sixth game to clinch bowl eligibility. Like you
00:31:15 don't understand where we come from. Um, so yeah, I mean, I bet
00:31:20 you, if you ask a lot of Colorado fans, we have, you know,
00:31:23 Nebraska this week in Colorado state next week, they'll tell
00:31:26 you if you win, if you beat Nebraska and you beat Colorado
00:31:28 state, like I'm good. Yeah. Um, and obviously the expectations
00:31:32 are going to expand after that. And people are going to want
00:31:34 more and more and more as they always do. But, uh, like you
00:31:37 said, like just the fact that they're relevant, they're
00:31:41 exciting. They have like legitimate playmakers who make
00:31:44 it exciting to tune in every week is more than enough. So how
00:31:47 did, how did, uh, help me understand how like Colorado
00:31:49 got in this position from, from your vantage point? Like how did
00:31:53 not, not just last season being that bad, but, um, you know, I,
00:31:56 I, I know there've been decent seasons here and there through
00:31:59 the years. And I don't mean to say that, that Colorado has put
00:32:02 out a one in 11 football team every single season. Um, but
00:32:06 close, but pretty, yeah. Like, like how, how does that happen?
00:32:08 How does the team win a ch a national championship in 1990,
00:32:12 uh, end up being in this position where you're saying if
00:32:16 they went three games, you're already, you're already like,
00:32:18 that's what, that's a hell of a season for us.
00:32:20 Yeah. I mean, I want to ask how long do you have? Cause I could,
00:32:25 you know, we could go way back and go through all the, you
00:32:29 know, the, the notes here, but the big thing is in the early
00:32:33 two thousands, they were good. Uh, they want a big 12
00:32:36 championship in 2001. You know, they beat Nebraska. Who was
00:32:39 like number two in the country, 62 to 36. Um, it was a huge
00:32:43 thing. They just missed out on going to the national
00:32:45 championship black that year, actually Nebraska ended up
00:32:48 going, which was crazy. Cause they just beat the brakes off
00:32:50 them. Um, and then there was a scandal, uh, and the coach at
00:32:56 the time, Gary Barnett was caught in the midst of it. Uh,
00:32:59 and you know, there was all sorts of allegations being
00:33:02 thrown around and recruiting violations and all that stuff
00:33:04 that just made them be like, okay, well, we have to, we have
00:33:07 to get rid of Gary Barnett. We got to start from scratch. Um,
00:33:10 they fired the athletic director to, or actually the athletic
00:33:13 director stepped down and they basically went started from
00:33:16 scratch. And at the time they thought they got like the home
00:33:20 run higher in Dan Hawkins, who was of course the coach at Boise
00:33:24 state when they upset, uh, Oklahoma and the fiesta bowl and
00:33:27 all that. And so they kind of like thought they got the home
00:33:31 run higher turned out. He was a fraud. Um, you know, it was,
00:33:35 uh, Peterson, uh, who obviously everyone knows now he was kind
00:33:39 of the brains behind the operation. So he takes over
00:33:41 Boise state, they stay good. Colorado falls back. And a lot
00:33:45 of Colorado fans will tell you like Dan Hawkins came in and
00:33:49 just wanted to do everything his own way and like completely
00:33:53 kind of ignored the traditions of the school, um, was like
00:33:56 turning away program grades that like wanted to come on, you
00:34:00 know, hang out on the sideline for games. Um, and kind of like
00:34:03 took the soul out of Colorado football a little bit because I,
00:34:06 I think mostly because of his ego. Um, so that whole thing is
00:34:11 funny looking back on it now, because like they were like
00:34:13 five and seven every year. Um, and at the time a team that was
00:34:17 bowl eligible or competing for the big 12 every year, like
00:34:19 that was like an, an, an Epic failure. So they fire him and
00:34:24 everyone says, okay, we got to get back to the tradition. Like
00:34:27 we, you know, we, we got, you know, like, uh, Bill McCartney,
00:34:31 who's the best coaching program history said the pride and
00:34:33 tradition of the Colorado Buffaloes will not be
00:34:35 entrusted to the timid or the weak. And so like, that's,
00:34:37 everyone's like, you know, posting that every day, like we
00:34:40 got to get back to the pride and tradition of the Colorado
00:34:42 Buffalo. So, um, they had to, you know, as a lot of places do
00:34:46 when they're down bad, they, they go back into the alumni and
00:34:49 they're like, okay, well, who that played here can come coach
00:34:53 us. Um, and John Embry, who was an assistant coach on Barnett
00:34:58 staff had gone to, um, UCLA had a bunch of success there as an
00:35:02 assistant coach. Uh, and Eric Biennium, funny enough, um, who
00:35:06 was one of the greats at Colorado, uh, was also with him
00:35:09 at UCLA. So it was like down to those two funny. They're both
00:35:12 like assistant coaches at UCLA is like, are we going Embo? Are
00:35:14 we going Eric Biennium? Uh, they ended up hiring Embry, bring in
00:35:19 the enemy has his offensive coordinator. Um, and kind of
00:35:24 just thought like, Oh, like they're going to be able to use
00:35:25 these recruiting chops. Well, to be fair to them, they had no
00:35:30 time. Um, they were terrible right off the bat, worse than
00:35:34 they ever were with Hawkins. And, uh, the wheels kind of fall
00:35:38 off. They fired Embry, um, almost immediately. And then
00:35:43 like I said, how much time do you have?
00:35:45 Oh, keep going. This is great. I don't, I think there are a lot
00:35:48 of people that, that knew, knew none of this myself included
00:35:50 knew very little of this stuff. So this is great. So they go,
00:35:52 so they go two and 10 with Embry, uh, in his second season
00:35:57 and they're just like, okay, well, this isn't working either.
00:35:59 So they fire him. Um, one of the craziest moments of my media
00:36:03 career is they gave him a post firing press conference, like at
00:36:08 the team facility. Um, which I don't know whose idea that was,
00:36:12 but they were like, we fired John Embry come here from him
00:36:15 at 10 30 AM. We're like, what? Why would he do that? Why would
00:36:18 Embry want to do that? Why would he not? Well, he was fired up,
00:36:22 man. So he showed up there like angry. Um, in like, I remember
00:36:27 his wife and kids were there like yelling at the athletic
00:36:30 director. It was one of the craziest things. They're like,
00:36:32 you didn't give him enough time. Like you promised us all this
00:36:35 time. It was, it was incredible. Oh my God. So yeah. So they end
00:36:42 up, uh, letting go of him and they bring in Mike McIntyre, um,
00:36:47 who actually had a little bit of success. Like he comes in and
00:36:51 he's like, I'm not signing a contract unless you guys
00:36:53 upgrade the facilities. Um, and so, you know, he gets it built
00:36:57 into his contract that they have a whole facilities rebuild,
00:37:00 which are the facilities that you're now seeing, like coach
00:37:02 prime blow up all over the place, showing off how great
00:37:04 they are, um, and turn it around a little bit, got back to like
00:37:09 that five and seven area. They had one great season in 2016.
00:37:13 Um, and then shortly thereafter, they actually started, uh, five
00:37:21 and Oh, and like all the, all the hype is around them and
00:37:25 they're up, I believe 31 to three on Oregon state to clinch
00:37:31 bowl eligibility and go six and Oh, they're ranked, uh, and they
00:37:35 blow the lead in the second half. Um, and not only do they
00:37:40 go on to lose that game, but they go on to lose every game
00:37:43 for the rest of the season, uh, completely derails all the
00:37:47 momentum. They have their best player. Like, uh, gets banged
00:37:51 up all, you know, everyone there's in fighting and the
00:37:54 coaching staff, the fans are losing their minds as loss
00:37:56 after loss, after loss. And every week it's just like, okay,
00:37:58 well, if we could just win next week, we're going to a bowl.
00:38:01 They lose seven in a row to end the season. McIntyre gets
00:38:05 fired. I, you want me to keep going? I mean, I, like this is,
00:38:10 this is yeah. Very informative. I mean, I know the Mel Tucker
00:38:13 part of it. I know that part of it. Yeah. Yeah. Mel Tucker was
00:38:17 next and they really nailed it. Like Rick George, who's the
00:38:20 athletic director still, um, nailed the hire. Uh, and you
00:38:24 know, he wanted to bring in someone who knew how to market
00:38:27 the school and all the things, honestly, that you say when you
00:38:30 hire coach prime, just like coach prime times a thousand,
00:38:33 but Mel Tucker brought in a lot of that same thing. He brought
00:38:35 swagger back to the university. He, he brought confidence into
00:38:39 the locker room and it worked, you know, and they, and they,
00:38:43 you know, they only win five games in his first year, but it
00:38:45 was clear, like he was winning recruiting battles. Like they're
00:38:47 going the right way. Of course, after tweeting out that he was
00:38:51 staying, he leaves a donor event where he like announced he was
00:38:56 staying and said, Hey, we need support to get to the next
00:38:59 level. He leaves that answers a call on the phone, uh, uh,
00:39:02 answers the phone and, uh, in the car on the way out and, uh,
00:39:05 takes the Michigan state job. And you know, like, you know,
00:39:08 everyone around here calls him midnight Mel, because it's like
00:39:11 he left, left him in night while we were all asleep. We woke up,
00:39:14 he was gone. Um, and they were left in a really bad position
00:39:19 after that because Mel Tucker leaves to Michigan state, like
00:39:21 late in the process. Um, it, it wasn't, you know, right after
00:39:25 the season, they had kind of, I think it was just a couple of
00:39:28 weeks away from signing day, if I remember correctly, and their
00:39:31 hands were tied. They like went and tried to get Steve
00:39:33 Sarkisian. He just like use them for a raise at Alabama. Uh, and
00:39:37 so finally Rick George was just like, okay, well, Carl Darrell,
00:39:40 like he won a couple of games at UCLA when he was there, he's
00:39:44 going to be bring us stability. He actually has a house in
00:39:47 Colorado. So like, we know he likes it here. Like let's just
00:39:50 get someone to say yes. Um, and he came in and obviously it was
00:39:53 just, he, he didn't really bring the juice at all. And, uh, it,
00:39:57 it was pretty rough. Um, you know, wasn't took the energy
00:40:01 right out of the program. And so, um, a lot of people wanted
00:40:04 Rick George to be fired. And I, I kind of felt like that was
00:40:09 unfair because his first, his first hire was Mel Tucker. I
00:40:12 thought he knocked that out of the park. Unfortunately, it
00:40:14 didn't work out long-term the second one, he had his hands
00:40:17 tied. So a lot of people wanted him fired, but you know, good on
00:40:19 the university, they gave him another chance. And he said,
00:40:22 I'm going to swing for the fences, try and leave a legacy
00:40:24 here. So it's just a long list of, uh, just bad luck. Uh, just
00:40:29 the wrong coaches. It really it's, it's a story that a lot of
00:40:33 programs I think can identify with, but, um, it's just more
00:40:36 shocking for a program like Colorado to be at that level and
00:40:40 fall. It was, you're saying basically like it wasn't a, it
00:40:42 wasn't like a immediate fall. It was just like a gradual decline
00:40:45 into, into the depths of hell until Deon Sanders arove, uh,
00:40:51 yeah. And just save the day basically overnight. Um, I guess
00:40:55 I hate bringing this up, Ryan, but, uh, the haters will, uh,
00:40:59 I'm sure have, have mentioned this many times to you. What
00:41:03 about the scenario that Dion is just using this as a springboard?
00:41:06 Do you even care? Have you even entertained that possibility?
00:41:08 Have you entertained the thought that like you guys win 10 games
00:41:11 this year and then Dion leaves, is it still worth it to you in
00:41:13 the end? And I apologize for even bringing this up. I should
00:41:15 not have done that. I shouldn't, I shouldn't bring this up after
00:41:18 one week, but, uh, I'm just like, I feel like you guys have
00:41:21 been through some emotional hell here and I'm just trying to like
00:41:23 prepare you for, you know, it's funny. We've talked about that
00:41:29 since the day he got here. And you know, I guess if we, there's
00:41:32 one thing we have to thank Mel Tucker for, it's like, we are
00:41:35 now emotionally protected from such things happening. Um, I
00:41:40 don't think he sees it that way. Um, one thing I can be sure of
00:41:43 is he's not going anywhere, uh, after this year. Um, and, and
00:41:48 the reason I shouldn't say I can be sure of it, but I'm pretty
00:41:50 darn sure. Uh, and the reason is one, the buyout they have, you
00:41:54 know, on the contract is, is huge. And the other thing is,
00:41:58 you know, you, the way that college football works now you
00:42:00 get one free transfer, right? Um, so all of the guys that you
00:42:04 brought with him, like a Shador, his son, uh, Shiloh actually
00:42:07 has one more year of eligibility after this, although he's a grad.
00:42:10 So that changes it. Travis Hunter has to play one more year.
00:42:13 Like those guys wouldn't get a free transfer to go to another
00:42:15 school. So he's going to be here at least at the end, I think of
00:42:18 Shador's career. And after that, like, there's no way we could
00:42:25 look back on this and say, uh, I regret that that happened. You
00:42:28 know, it's like, yeah, we, we were dead in the water and coach
00:42:33 prime comes in and brought back, like just Colorado being cool.
00:42:36 Like you just see around Denver where I am right now, like
00:42:39 people are wearing black and gold everywhere. Um, and that
00:42:42 hasn't happened in years. I was at a restaurant the other day
00:42:46 and like, there's a table full of high school kids around next
00:42:49 to me. And they're just like talking about the buffs. This
00:42:51 is before they even play. They're just like talking about
00:42:53 Colorado football. Like that, that has not been like that at
00:42:57 all for a long time. So we will look back on this. Like I said,
00:43:00 if he left tomorrow, we'd look back on it as a success. You
00:43:02 guys could honestly like not play another game the rest of
00:43:04 the year and just put out clips of Dion giving pep talks to the
00:43:08 team and just like Instagram posts of like the guys wearing
00:43:13 the, cause like that was the other thing, the Colorado
00:43:15 football team coming out in the all whites, like that, that was
00:43:18 like cool shit, dude. Like that was the, I don't know how you
00:43:22 could watch that game and not come away from it being like
00:43:24 Colorado is very cool, which as you said, it's probably shocking
00:43:27 to you guys because you're like, we have not been cool for a very
00:43:30 long time. And suddenly you wake up and you have the coolest
00:43:32 football program in the country. Um, talk to me a little bit
00:43:35 about the Nebraska rivalry. Um, the, the, you guys play
00:43:38 Nebraska obviously on Saturday. Uh, what, this is like the third
00:43:41 time only since like 2010, this is a rivalry that's back.
00:43:45 It has been put on the back burner. It has now been
00:43:48 rekindled here. Um, is this your number one rival still, would
00:43:52 you say? And how much of a rivalry is it for, for you guys?
00:43:56 Yeah, it's absolutely our number one rival. Um, Colorado state
00:44:02 is the only one that even really exists. And obviously, you know,
00:44:05 that one's clear, but, um, it's been very one-sided obviously
00:44:10 towards Colorado, pretty much most of the rivalry. Um, and it
00:44:15 just with them not being a power five team, it doesn't hit the
00:44:17 same. Nebraska has been the one for us forever. Um, I'll have,
00:44:21 you know, that Nebraska has not beat Colorado in football in
00:44:25 4,666 days. Um, so yeah, it's the third matchup since 2010,
00:44:31 but we got the last two. So it's been a long time for them. Uh,
00:44:35 this one is, it's kind of everything to us. Uh, and you
00:44:38 know, it goes all the way back to the glory days where Bill
00:44:42 McCartney just came in and was like, Hey, who's the best team
00:44:44 in the conference right now? And they were like, Nebraska. He's
00:44:46 like, cool. We fucking hate them now. Um, and everyone's like,
00:44:50 all right, we're on board. And like that, you know, that's
00:44:53 basically the start of it, but there's been some epic matchups
00:44:56 and they used to play at the end of the season. So it all usually
00:44:59 came down to the Nebraska game. Um, yeah, we hate them. We hate,
00:45:02 we hate them with every ounce. Is it like you watched Nebraska
00:45:06 throughout the season? I mean, I guess you're playing them second
00:45:08 game of the season now, but like typically you watch them
00:45:11 throughout the season just to, cause that like, that's how my
00:45:14 perspective is. Oh, I'm going to Ohio state guys. So like we,
00:45:16 Ohio state fans almost pay more attention to Michigan than at
00:45:20 times. And sometimes Ohio state, it feels like it feels like
00:45:23 you're talking about like, yeah, did you see Michigan's game
00:45:24 last? All right. They're looking better here. They're looking
00:45:26 back, you know, and it's like, you're so keyed in on that,
00:45:28 right. Would you say that's a, that's a fair way to describe
00:45:31 the Nebraska, Colorado rivalry for you?
00:45:33 Yeah. I mean, I've been saying for a couple of years now, like
00:45:36 my favorite team, uh, hasn't been very good, but my second
00:45:39 favorite team, which is whoever's playing Nebraska has
00:45:41 been pretty good for a few years. So at least I have that
00:45:45 going for me. I mean, that's how it is. Like, like I turned on
00:45:49 last Thursday, uh, when they took on Minnesota and like, I
00:45:52 was watching that like a diehard Minnesota fan. Like when they
00:45:56 fumbled that game away and choked, like they always do. I
00:45:59 was like, this is incredible. Like college football's back,
00:46:02 baby.
00:46:03 Growing up in Indiana, um, Nebraska, Colorado, I was, you
00:46:08 know, growing up in the nineties, it made it very easy,
00:46:10 but Nebraska, Colorado had juice to me even like, I didn't, I
00:46:14 didn't really care about either program either way. But like
00:46:16 when Nebraska played Colorado and football, I was watching and
00:46:18 I cared immensely about watching that game. Um, how much juice
00:46:22 does it have right now? Would you say like going into
00:46:24 Saturday, do you, do you feel like, like, give me a, give me
00:46:28 a timeframe of like when you've last felt this way about the
00:46:31 Nebraska, Colorado rivalry going into a Saturday, like where's
00:46:34 the, where's the juice level at?
00:46:37 We're all the way back to like 2001 levels of juice. Um, like
00:46:43 I said, that, so that game in 2001 is when I fell in love with
00:46:47 college football. I was nine years old. Um, and I had been
00:46:50 to like buffs games and I liked the buffs and I was into it. Um,
00:46:53 but I went to the game and I just remember like we pulled
00:46:57 into the tailgating lot at like 6:00 AM. They were like, uh,
00:47:01 sorry, like we're not open yet. Like my dad pulled out like a
00:47:04 hundred dollar bill, gave it to the guy and was like, no, we're
00:47:06 tailgating now. And they were like, all right, all right. It's
00:47:08 like, I, I, I feel like I can remember every step of that day.
00:47:12 And like, I truly fell in love, um, from that day until today,
00:47:17 I have been to 123 out of 125 home games or something right
00:47:23 around that number. So it was like, I was hooked for life.
00:47:26 Yeah. Um, and so like, I just remembered that was all anyone
00:47:31 talked about, uh, on the radio that week. That was all like we
00:47:34 had Thanksgiving dinner the night before is all my family
00:47:37 was talking about. It was like a couple of people in my family
00:47:39 that were corn Huskers fans. Like we're just like fighting
00:47:43 across the table. Like we're back. We're totally back to that
00:47:46 level. Uh, at least between the fan bases, uh, you know, like
00:47:49 the, the online, like back and forth is like totally turned up
00:47:53 to 11. I heard, um, I heard on your last show or with Robbie
00:47:57 Hummel, you were like, Oh, like you deal with real media. I deal
00:48:00 with like internet trolls. I was like, Oh, I see why he had me
00:48:03 on. Like, if you look at my timeline right now, it's just me
00:48:06 trolling the brass band. So like we're, uh, we're like all the
00:48:11 way back. It's, it's pretty cool. I actually think that the
00:48:13 atmosphere at Folsom field on Saturday is going to be unlike
00:48:18 anything, any Colorado fan has ever seen. Like, I really think
00:48:21 we're all the way to that.
00:48:22 That's awesome, man. That, that fires me up. Uh, I have a soft
00:48:25 spot for Colorado, uh, personal connections to the city of
00:48:28 Boulder, obviously. And also that, uh, the village coffee
00:48:31 shop, you're aware of this, right? You know, the village
00:48:33 coffee shop, right? That's my favorite. That's my favorite
00:48:35 diner in the world. I haven't been to every diner in the
00:48:37 world, but I've been there and that is without question, my
00:48:41 favorite diner in the world. So I've always had a soft spot for,
00:48:44 uh, for CU. Um, and I've, every time I go to Boulder, it just
00:48:48 like, it's the most beautiful place ever. And I just like sit
00:48:51 there and wonder like, why, why is this not, why is the school
00:48:53 not better at stuff? And my mind just keeps, I just keep going
00:48:57 back to like, maybe, maybe all the athletes are distracted.
00:49:00 Maybe it's like, they're not in the gym working hard. I just
00:49:03 want to like go hiking and, you know, do whatever else. So it's,
00:49:07 it's, I've never really been able to land on a great theory.
00:49:09 Um, but you know, everything's turning in the right direction.
00:49:12 The basketball program is good too, by the way, Colorado
00:49:15 basketball. Yeah. A lot of buzz going for Colorado. Tristan
00:49:19 De Silva's back, Eddie Lampkin transferred from TCU. Um, yeah,
00:49:24 Colorado will be a ton of fun this year, uh, for basketball
00:49:27 as well. So I'm fired up. All of Colorado sports, man, the
00:49:30 nuggets are winning the abs. Well, not all the Rockies are
00:49:33 still so joke, but yeah.
00:49:36 Where I'm sitting right now is inside what's known as the DNV
00:49:40 our bar, um, which is, we started our company DNV, our,
00:49:44 um, which is like a local media, all online, all digital outlet.
00:49:48 And we ended up parlaying that into getting a bar. Um, and
00:49:53 since we've had this bar, the abs have won a championship, the
00:49:57 nuggets have won a championship, like the, I'll send you a video
00:50:00 of the scene in here on Saturday when, when the buffs won, like
00:50:04 it's insane. So, um, yeah, it's been a great time to be a
00:50:07 Colorado sports. That's awesome, man. Good for you. Good for you.
00:50:10 Uh, appreciate you making time for me, Ryan, uh, the DNV art,
00:50:14 what did the, the, the CU bus podcast? That's the podcast.
00:50:16 That's how people can listen. Um, yeah. If you, if you look up
00:50:19 DNV, our buffs or DNV, our CU buffs pod, uh, that's how you'll
00:50:22 find us also we're we're on YouTube as well. There's a lot
00:50:25 of, a lot of bandwagon people coming around. Are you, are you
00:50:28 good with that? Is that okay by you? Is it, or do you, do you
00:50:30 say it? Listen, if you weren't, if you weren't a believer before
00:50:33 Saturday, stay the hell away, we're riding with the true
00:50:35 believers. College football is built on support. Like you have
00:50:40 to have support to win in college football. So I'm like,
00:50:43 bring in everyone. And obviously, you know, doing a
00:50:46 show makes it even better. Like there was legitimately shows
00:50:49 last year that we did live that did a hundred viewers. Our post
00:50:54 game show on Saturday did over 130,000. Wow. Like, wow. So
00:51:00 yeah. Come on. Yeah. Well, enjoy the ride, man. Uh, both
00:51:06 Saturday and the rest of the rest of the year, I might have
00:51:08 to check back in with you. Uh, if Colorado's like eight, no,
00:51:12 you know, and we might have to revisit these expectations. You
00:51:14 said when you'd be fine with, with six wins. Uh, but no, it's,
00:51:18 it's been, it's been really cool. Uh, it's been really cool
00:51:20 the last few days to see, uh, all the buzz and, and best of
00:51:23 luck the rest of the season, both with the football team and
00:51:25 the business you got going on and the show and everything,
00:51:28 Ryan. Appreciate it. Thanks man. I really appreciate it. And uh,
00:51:31 next time you're in Colorado, come by the bar. We will do
00:51:33 that. I will do that. I I I'm in Colorado all the time, so I
00:51:36 will, I will definitely make that happen. And uh, hopefully
00:51:39 I can, I hope I can get in, man. You guys keep winning and
00:51:42 everything. The place is packed all the time. Yeah. We'll have
00:51:45 a spot for you. All right. Thanks. All right. See you man.
00:51:49 See ya. All right. Thank you to Ryan Konigsberg. Uh, that was
00:51:53 fun. I felt like I learned a lot. He kept, uh, you could
00:51:55 tell he's got like the thing that I have where like you start
00:51:58 talking and you think like halfway through, you're like, no
00:52:00 one gives a shit about this. It was like, should I keep, it's
00:52:02 like, there's no, it's like, there's no world where anyone
00:52:04 actually cares about the history of Colorado football coaches.
00:52:07 I was like, I do, I care. I don't know any of this because
00:52:10 I don't want to like twist the knife too much, but Colorado
00:52:12 football has been irrelevant for a very long time. And I don't
00:52:14 know who was coaching and I don't know. He is going through
00:52:18 a very rare phenomenon in sports fandom though, when you've
00:52:21 reached the lowest of lows and then you have like the beacon
00:52:24 of hope. Yes. And it's like after one week paying off and
00:52:28 it continues to pay off, you'll continue to ride that high and
00:52:31 just want to tell everybody in your whole life about the
00:52:33 history of Colorado. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. The darkness
00:52:36 that you've been in. But then you catch yourself and you're
00:52:38 like, there's no way they care. But, um, like I cared, I cared.
00:52:41 That was, that was fascinating to me because you, you probably
00:52:44 I hate that I keep doing this on the show. I, it makes me sound
00:52:47 like I'm a thousand years old when I'm just like, you're
00:52:48 probably not old enough to remember. Um, but having said
00:52:52 that, you're probably not old enough to remember when
00:52:54 Colorado was good. Right? Like to you, Colorado was cool at
00:52:57 one point. They were so cool. The Courthouse tour was so cool.
00:53:00 Rashan Salam was so cool. Um, they were very, very cool. They
00:53:04 have not been cool for a long time. And now, and like the snap
00:53:07 of a finger, it is crazy because there were, I mean, there were
00:53:11 so like, even when Dion was hired, he was a clown to so
00:53:14 many people, like every, it is crazy how fast that happens.
00:53:17 And it's just like winning cures all, I guess that's really it.
00:53:20 I guess if, if they would have lost, then maybe I would have
00:53:22 been sitting down in this chair saying Dion's a clown, you know?
00:53:24 Probably.
00:53:26 But there's something, what is it about that, that like Dion
00:53:28 Sanders, I mean, yeah, it's that, it's that he's, it's that
00:53:33 he backs it up, I guess. But like, why, if any other coach
00:53:35 was behaving this way. So I sort of get that the people that
00:53:38 are like, I just don't like how cocky he is. I don't like, I
00:53:42 mean, I understand the line of thinking, but I also, I can't
00:53:47 get there, man. Because I think it's just like the coolest
00:53:49 thing in the world. I think that I watched that that pregame
00:53:51 speech he gave. I watched that video 1000 times.
00:53:54 I want to play for Colorado.
00:53:55 I did think though, how is he going to do this like 12 more
00:53:58 times this year? Like, how did he use all this material?
00:54:01 Dion has just like, he's talked such a big game for literally
00:54:05 everything he's ever done in his whole life. But he's backed up
00:54:09 every single time he said, aside from like the when he tried to
00:54:13 start a high school, which that doesn't get brought up. But like
00:54:16 he's every single goal he set out, he's accomplished and then
00:54:20 some, he's played two professional sports, he played
00:54:23 three sports and college like everything he's ever attempted,
00:54:25 he's smashed. So when he said he wants to do like coaching
00:54:28 football, people are like, you can't, you can't do that four
00:54:31 stars and five stars in an HBCU. And he did that, like had
00:54:35 Travis Hunter flip from Florida State to Jackson State. And then
00:54:38 they're like, you can't make a one and 11 team good in one
00:54:41 year. And they need a playoff team in week one, and they have
00:54:45 two Heisman candidates, two Heisman candidates out of the
00:54:47 gate. Yeah, I mean, when Travis Hunter committed to Jackson
00:54:49 State, it was it was a joke. And it was like, well, we'll never
00:54:52 see this kid again. So congratulations on pissing away
00:54:55 what was a promising football career, you idiot. You stupid
00:54:58 idiot. Well, no, you know,
00:54:59 one game, one game, greatest player. I can't wait to play as
00:55:04 him in the NCAA video game. He is so sick.
00:55:08 I think that's what it is. I think like, yeah, Dion's cocky
00:55:10 as shit. He talks the talk, you know, he's got the swagger,
00:55:13 which, you know, is some people are very turned off by that of
00:55:17 coach should behave a certain way. And he doesn't fit inside
00:55:21 that box. But at a certain point, just the results just
00:55:25 beat you over the head over and over again. And you just have
00:55:27 to succumb. If you're a hater, you just have to succumb at a
00:55:29 certain point, you have to if you're a Dion Sanders hater,
00:55:31 there has to be a there has to be a point where you throw your
00:55:34 hands up and you say I was simply wrong about this man. And
00:55:36 I don't know how it was just one game. I'm not trying to say
00:55:39 they're national champions. I'm not trying to say you know that
00:55:42 that shooter Sanders and Travis Hunter are going to be co
00:55:46 Heisman winners. But yeah, they won one game last year, they
00:55:49 just beat the team that played for national championship. If
00:55:52 you're a hater, you look you've already lost. It's over. Move
00:55:55 on. Anyway, speaking of haters, and speaking of things that
00:55:59 nobody's interested in the United States basketball team
00:56:02 in this World Cup, we lost to Lithuania. Very ugly game. Very
00:56:07 soft game, very United States way to lose a basketball game.
00:56:10 Just getting destroyed on the boards. Getting frustrated and
00:56:15 instead of like, adjusting, just kind of like being baffled as
00:56:20 to how they're how we're going to go about solving this
00:56:23 problem. Like just the I'll put it this way. I like this team a
00:56:27 lot. I don't think they're anywhere close to the worst
00:56:29 defenders when it comes to entitlement. But that is the USA
00:56:32 basketball way of life is like if things aren't going well,
00:56:35 there's just like a sense of like, this doesn't fucking make
00:56:37 any sense instead of like, you know, bearing down the hatches
00:56:39 and like, alright, let's fucking lock. Let's lock in. We got that
00:56:42 a little bit at the start of the second half huge third quarter
00:56:45 against Lithuania. And the guys looked a lot better. But the
00:56:49 defensive effort wasn't there. The rebounding was was atrocious.
00:56:52 Lithuania was hitting some crazy shots. I will say like it is, as
00:56:56 it turns out, the feeble World Cup is also a make or miss
00:56:58 league. Crazy a lot of a lot of make or miss leagues out there
00:57:01 in basketball. But yeah, Lithuania was hitting everything.
00:57:05 I'm still not super worried. Now we're gonna probably we're
00:57:09 probably gonna play Germany. Germany, Latvia play. Those of
00:57:14 you listening, actually probably the games probably already
00:57:16 happened. It's happening tomorrow morning for us. And
00:57:21 then Canada, maybe in the final. I don't know. I think I feel
00:57:26 much less confident, obviously, after losing to Lithuania. But I
00:57:29 just, it's just frustrating to me, because it just like
00:57:32 reiterates the the cycle we get in with USA basketball, we're
00:57:35 like, nobody gives a shit about this World Cup. We lose to
00:57:37 Lithuania. Suddenly, everybody cares just to like point out how
00:57:41 embarrassing it is that we lost to Lithuania when Lithuania is
00:57:45 not bad by any stretch of the imagination. But it's just like,
00:57:50 the time for the time where the United States can just show up
00:57:55 and win a tournament is long gone. And that is not how that
00:57:58 is. That has been the case for a very long time that we have to
00:58:00 play well that we have to, we don't have to play perfect. And
00:58:04 yeah, we played we responded well against Italy. I thought
00:58:07 the guys played a lot harder. We beat the shit out of Italy. So
00:58:09 Italy couldn't make anything that certainly helped. They were
00:58:12 getting some wide open looks. There was breaking like crazy.
00:58:14 But um, yeah, I still feel confident that we're gonna win
00:58:17 this World Cup. But yeah, I think I think my, my concerns
00:58:23 for United States basketball long term are valid. I continue
00:58:27 to be an alarmist about what is going on in international
00:58:32 basketball, that the United States is far too casual, far
00:58:36 too, just like, far too comfortable sitting on the
00:58:40 throne. And we probably will sit on the throne for a little while
00:58:43 longer. But I just don't want to be blindsided when the day comes
00:58:47 that we get knocked off the throne because I don't. If
00:58:50 you're forecasting what our Olympic roster looks like it is
00:58:52 kind of bleak. It is kind of bleak. The 2024 Olympic roster
00:58:57 that we might put together. We'll still have the most
00:59:01 talented roster. Don't get me wrong, we will still have a
00:59:03 roster when stacked up against other rosters in the Olympics.
00:59:06 Ours will jump off the page at you ours. But we do not have the
00:59:10 this is not 2008. This is not. This is not gonna be a 2008
00:59:14 roster. This is not going to be a 1992 roster for the Olympics
00:59:18 next year. And I just think that if you care about basketball,
00:59:23 and you care about this country, I think that like you should be
00:59:25 aware of like what's happening, which is that Lithuania beats
00:59:30 us. And by the way, the other thing I was thinking, the NBA
00:59:34 guys got all in their panties about their panties in a bunch
00:59:37 about like the Noah Lyle saying that if you win, if you want to
00:59:42 be a championship, you're, you know, it's not the world
00:59:44 champion or whatever. And they're like, yes, it is. We're
00:59:45 the best thing in the world. Lithuania didn't have a ton of
00:59:47 NBA players. And they beat the United States a team full of
00:59:50 NBA players. I thought that was kind of funny that we just got
00:59:52 done talking about like, so like, like, there's some sort of
00:59:56 there's some sort of idea that like, if you have a team full of
00:59:58 NBA players, that means that you are unbeatable. That is not the
01:00:01 case. That was the case in 1992. When everybody was a Hall of
01:00:06 Famer. Second, absolutely loaded roster. Basically, what I'm
01:00:11 saying, TJ is the dream team ruined everything as it turns
01:00:15 out. I think the dream team is actually a net negative at this
01:00:17 point. I think I think the dream team for a long time was the
01:00:21 greatest thing this country from a sports perspective ever, ever
01:00:25 produced. It is now coming back to bite us because we've gotten
01:00:29 very complacent. We've gotten very used to like, if you know,
01:00:33 we've gotten very used to like putting together a roster of NBA
01:00:35 guys, and then you squint hard enough and you're like, is
01:00:38 Anthony Edwards, Michael Jordan, I mean, literally people making
01:00:40 memes of the half face. Michael Jordan. And I'm just I'm worried
01:00:45 I legitimately I'm worried I I'm a guy who likes to bust out some
01:00:49 shtick from time to time. This is no shtick. I do think that
01:00:53 there there will be a time in my life when the United States will
01:00:55 enter an Olympics, we will put forth the best roster we can
01:00:58 possibly put forth. And we will still not be like an obvious
01:01:02 favorite to win the thing. I think that will happen. And I
01:01:04 don't think it's gonna happen 2024. But I think it's gonna
01:01:06 happen at some point
01:01:07 to your point to about people not being like not paying
01:01:10 attention to what's happening. The biggest news coverage that
01:01:13 I've seen are not news but social coverage of the FIBA
01:01:16 World Cup thus far is that either ball sack or butt crack
01:01:20 sports parody account on Twitter, use the loss to
01:01:24 Lithuania as an opportunity to make a graphic that said, USA
01:01:27 basketball eliminated from 2024 Olympic contention, right? And
01:01:31 people bought it like it had like 10,000 likes a bunch of
01:01:35 interactions. I think Frank the Tank posted like a long video
01:01:38 ranting about how like the USA basketball team has gone down
01:01:42 downhill. And not only a lot of people thought that that's what
01:01:45 that meant, because we lost the game.
01:01:46 And not only did we not get eliminated, we actually, if I
01:01:51 remember correctly, like at that exact moment, as the clock hit
01:01:53 zero, we actually qualified for the Olympics because Dominican
01:01:57 Republic had lost and however, the Olympic qualifying works.
01:02:01 Yeah, that meant that we had secured our spot.
01:02:03 Yeah, well, because people saw Canada got in. Yeah. And we
01:02:06 lost. They were like, that must mean that we're out.
01:02:09 Yeah, no, it's it's it's I don't I don't. I mean, I do get it.
01:02:14 But I it's but I don't get it at the same time. Like I don't.
01:02:18 It's USA basketball as a whole is just like a product that
01:02:23 people just don't give a shit about. And it's Yeah, I don't
01:02:27 know if entitlement is probably too strong of a word. But it's
01:02:30 just like, you know, people, people check in and if we win,
01:02:35 you shrug your shoulders and you say, good, we should win. So I
01:02:37 don't care. I'm not gonna why would I watch? Who do we play
01:02:39 Germany or Latvia? The next game? We're gonna blow them out
01:02:43 by 50. Why would I watch that game? And then you you know,
01:02:45 Germany upsets us and then you check back in. You're like,
01:02:48 wow, we suck. Nevermind. And then like, whatever, whatever
01:02:50 the result is, it's not a result that's going to get people to
01:02:53 care. You know, like, that's, that's just kind of frustrating
01:02:57 to me because I do think that like, if you for if you remove
01:03:00 like the history of basketball around the world and the United
01:03:04 States dominance in this sport, and you just look to the future,
01:03:07 I actually think it's like a compelling it the competition is
01:03:11 there and it'll be fun and like us when we win the gold medal
01:03:15 2024 and we will we will win the gold medal because we're better
01:03:17 than everybody and we're gonna kick their ass. But when we do
01:03:20 it'll be rewarding and it won't be just like a we roll a bunch
01:03:24 of guys that are our second string could have won the gold
01:03:27 medal as well. It'll be something that like we had to
01:03:29 beat good teams along the way. Kind of like Oh, it was our Oh,
01:03:32 18 was so good. 2010 2010 was that way to like 2010 against
01:03:36 Spain and Kobe takes over in the gold medal game and like that
01:03:39 was fun. If you anybody that watched that game, like, you
01:03:41 know, like this was this was great basketball. Spain was a
01:03:43 really good team. We were better. That was a fun
01:03:46 experience. I think that's where international basketball is now
01:03:50 positioned moving forward where we will be the favorites. We are
01:03:53 the the Duke or the Kansas or whatever you want to call it of
01:03:56 of international basketball, but we still have to go out and earn
01:03:59 it. And, you know, I that should, in my mind, that should
01:04:03 be the takeaway from Lithuania when you lose to Lithuania in a
01:04:07 tournament like this. The takeaway should be like, Oh,
01:04:09 damn, the rest of the world actually isn't that bad. They
01:04:13 haven't fully caught up, but they can catch us on a bad
01:04:15 night. Yeah, of course. We got it. We got to play well every
01:04:17 single night. But instead, the takeaway is just like, well,
01:04:21 goddamn, this group of USA players sucks. Socks. We lost the
01:04:24 fucking Lithuania. Embarrassing. It could not possibly be that
01:04:28 other countries are. Yeah, yeah, it has to be us. And it has to
01:04:31 be like, well, I'll tell you what the problem is. It's Jalen
01:04:34 Brunson. Get his ass on the bench and get, you know, give
01:04:37 Halliburton more minutes and get, you know, and Austin Reeves
01:04:40 was the best player on our team until the Lithuania game and
01:04:43 they were killing him in the low post. So now he sucks. So get
01:04:46 him the fuck out of my face. And, you know, it's like, you
01:04:49 know, there's a world where Steve Kerr actually knows who
01:04:51 the best the best lineup is. He's putting it out there. We're
01:04:55 playing decent, not great. Another team played really,
01:04:59 really well and beat us. And that's like not shocking. That
01:05:02 should not be shocking anymore. And World Basketball, but
01:05:04 Americans continue to be shocked by it. And I just fear like,
01:05:08 we're gonna lose our grip and we're not gonna be able to get
01:05:10 it back. TJ, that's the fear. I will keep saying it. And then
01:05:14 it'll happen. And then everyone will look at me and they'll be
01:05:15 like, Are you happy? You said this would happen. I'll be like,
01:05:17 No, I'm not happy. In fact, I'm right, but I'm not happy. This
01:05:21 is very sad day. A sad day for America. Sad. I'm gonna tweet
01:05:25 that. This is a sad day for America. Um, but we're still
01:05:28 gonna win the World Cup. Having said all that, because we're
01:05:31 just gonna win the World Cup. We're gonna be we're gonna be
01:05:33 Germany, we're gonna be Canada. And that's gonna be that. Um,
01:05:36 any shout outs before we go from the to 2023. Barstow
01:05:41 Invitational. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's right. Illinois has been
01:05:44 announced. So we hit us hit us with the teams. So they're
01:05:48 playing it at Winchester arena, which is where the WNBA t place.
01:05:52 Yep, the Chicago sky, I believe. Yeah. November 8. It's a
01:05:57 Wednesday night Loyola, Loyola, Chicago versus Florida Atlantic
01:06:01 and Mississippi State versus Arizona State. Oh, good. Good
01:06:06 matchups. Yeah. Initial reaction. Good matchups. Florida
01:06:09 Atlantic is gonna be a top 10 team. That's a that's a pretty
01:06:12 good get for us. I think Brandon and I are doing. Am I allowed to
01:06:17 say that? Or no? I don't know what you're about to say. What
01:06:20 our role will be in the broadcast? Oh, yeah, you can
01:06:22 say. Yeah, I allow you to say that. Yeah. Thank you. TJ. TJ is
01:06:25 my boss. And he okays it. Um, I think we're doing the the
01:06:30 halftime and the desk and the in between games like we're we're
01:06:33 doing the Ernie and Charles. Yeah, and yeah, that's that's
01:06:37 like our role and the and all of it. But no, those are those
01:06:41 would be great games. Those are those are Florida Atlantic,
01:06:44 especially that's good. That's a great get. Yeah, you didn't
01:06:47 you obviously not obviously, but didn't go to the one in Philly
01:06:51 last year, correct? I did not know it was to one of my
01:06:54 favorite like barstool productions I've ever been a
01:06:57 part of, whether you're a college basketball fan or a
01:07:00 barstool fan, like it's a very immersive environment where like,
01:07:02 you will get to meet people if that's what you're interested
01:07:05 in. Like people are like mingling around and it's like a
01:07:08 full arena takeover. So like we have like stuff on the concourse
01:07:12 and stuff. Yeah, the walk like it's a super fun environment to
01:07:15 just be a part of it's a very unique college basketball
01:07:18 viewing environment to especially if you're like, you
01:07:20 know, an internal barstool fan. Yeah, it's it's a super fun
01:07:24 event. Definitely grab tickets if you're in the Chicago area.
01:07:26 Come say hi. I think there should be good. There should be
01:07:28 two good games. Yeah, you're gonna be two really good games.
01:07:30 I mean, Loyola Loyola is taking a little bit of a step back, but
01:07:33 you got to think like hometown crowd. Sister Jean gonna be
01:07:37 there. We got to get her there. I don't know if they bring her
01:07:39 out until the spring. I think they her bones are too cold.
01:07:43 Yeah, she waits. I mean, Sister Jean's a little bit of a front
01:07:47 runner for being honest. She might. I think this is the game
01:07:49 Loyola wins. If Loyola were to win, then Sister Jean will be at
01:07:53 the next Loyola game, right? That's what happens. Yeah, she
01:07:55 doesn't come to this one. She'll wait to see if they can knock
01:07:58 off a highly ranked FAU team that some people think could be
01:08:01 top five. They'll probably be I'm gonna call my shot FAU will
01:08:05 be ranked 11th. I think they'll be. They'll be ranked 11th.
01:08:12 They'll be ranked 11th when this thing takes place. They'll be
01:08:14 ranked 11th and then we'll have to put out our own poll. We
01:08:16 should put out the Mark Titus show poll where we go off of
01:08:20 our own rankings. We should do that. Barstool should do that.
01:08:22 We should put out our own rankings because you know like
01:08:24 that's what like ESPN used to do the USA Today ESPN coaches
01:08:28 poll where they would go off of like I remember watching
01:08:32 college basketball back in the day and like the AP poll and
01:08:34 ESPN's poll were completely different. Yeah. And it was so
01:08:37 confusing to watch games where they had numbers next to the
01:08:40 teams that were not what I thought they weren't. They
01:08:43 weren't what the AP poll said. That's how like wrestling
01:08:45 college wrestling works. It's really confusing because there's
01:08:48 a bunch of different rankings. So we should come up with our
01:08:50 own rankings and if FAU's not in the top ten, we just put them
01:08:52 in the top ten and then on the broadcast, you put a little
01:08:55 like seven next to their name. Yeah. Titus. Titus is mostly
01:08:58 sports vibes ranking. Yeah. The vibes ranking. That's what we
01:09:02 need. I want to shout out John Rostein for into the program who
01:09:05 was officially a father as first reported by me as a
01:09:08 reminder folks. I am the only trusted source and John Rostein
01:09:12 News and John Rostein Scoops that includes John Rostein
01:09:15 himself. So do not do not listen to those other guys do
01:09:20 not whatever they have to say. It's it's it's false unless you
01:09:24 hear it from me and I reported over the weekend that John
01:09:27 Rostein's wife delivered their baby Saturday night. He's
01:09:30 officially a father as a reminder. I reported that I I
01:09:34 was the one who scooped that John Rostein was engaged to be
01:09:36 married. I was the one who scooped that John Rostein his
01:09:40 wife was pregnant with child and he would eventually be a
01:09:43 father and now I'm the man who scooped that John Rostein is in
01:09:46 fact the father. So shout out to John shout out to his lovely
01:09:49 wife who I don't know if he ever mentioned to her publicly.
01:09:53 So I won't say her name, but I don't want to dox her, but
01:09:55 she's she's I've I've met her a few times great gal. She's
01:09:58 apparently healthy the idea of John Rostein now just dealing
01:10:02 with a crying baby in his Manhattan apartment is very
01:10:05 funny to me because he's such a grinder and such a workhorse
01:10:08 and such a robot and now he's his his just life has been
01:10:13 thrown in disarray. It's just fascinating and I I know he's
01:10:16 going to love it. I know he's going to be a great dad, but
01:10:17 like it just kind of like there's like a paradigm shift
01:10:20 of how I view John like everything just got put on
01:10:23 tilted on its axis as I view John Rostein now both and
01:10:27 Fanta's on on his honeymoon. Fanta's on his honeymoon.
01:10:30 That's right. That's right. That's right on the shelf. How
01:10:35 about that man? How about that? That is so funny that Rostein
01:10:40 that's a great bit that we have going that he I told every
01:10:43 time I talk to him and well because what every time I talk
01:10:46 to him, it's basically because I did a rant on the show about
01:10:49 scoopers and how much I hate him and then I always mention
01:10:51 like John you're cool and then we'll put the clip out whether
01:10:55 it's this this happened at other companies I work for too
01:10:57 and they put the clip out and then John will see it and he'll
01:10:59 call me and I'll talk to him about the scoops game and then
01:11:02 I'll tell him the only scoops I'm ever interested in are his
01:11:05 own personal scoops and he leans into that heavily and he
01:11:08 gives me every single scoop. Anytime I ever get a text from
01:11:11 John, that's like I got a scoop for you. I know exactly what's
01:11:14 good. That's actually how it happened. He texted me Saturday
01:11:16 night and he goes, I have a scoop for you or Sunday morning,
01:11:18 whatever it was. He goes, I have a scoop for you and I knew
01:11:21 immediately what it was when he that's all he said. He just
01:11:23 said I have a scoop for you and I was like it's going to be
01:11:25 that he had his baby and then I just put eyes emojis in and
01:11:28 then he said meet meet my new baby. I was like this is so
01:11:33 funny. I scooped the scooper TJ. I scooped the scooper. He
01:11:36 doesn't even he doesn't even tell people about his personal
01:11:39 life. I have to be the one to tell him so you know that's
01:11:42 interesting. Shout out to there was no the winning time bid is
01:11:47 dead, but I just want to shout out that show. It's a good show
01:11:49 and I'm going to be the bigger man TJ. I'm going to say this
01:11:51 winning time is a very good show. HBO is doing a great job.
01:11:54 I very much enjoy that show every Sunday night and as it
01:11:58 turns out it is apparently something that I also enjoy
01:12:00 that nobody else is watching throw that in with the feeble
01:12:03 World Cup, but I'm having a great time watching it.
01:12:06 Unfortunately, no one else seems to be watching it, but I
01:12:09 feel like the if they would have made this a movie, they
01:12:12 would have like five Oscar nominations out of the show.
01:12:15 The acting is incredible. Jason Segel is Adrian Brody is
01:12:18 incredible. The dude that plays Jerry West. What's the name
01:12:21 of Jason Clark or something like that? I want to say he's
01:12:24 incredible. John C. Reilly's like the whole the whole the
01:12:27 show is incredible. Nobody cares. Nobody seems to be
01:12:30 watching it. It seems to just like lost all of its momentum.
01:12:33 My hang up with the show is that it is costing us future
01:12:38 John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell movies. That's right. If you
01:12:41 know that, but I do know the story. Yeah, that's just that's
01:12:43 I don't think that that era of comedy plays anymore like there
01:12:47 hasn't been a movie like that for those that don't know Adam
01:12:50 McKay co created winning time. Will Ferrell thought he was
01:12:54 going to get the lead role. John C. Reilly got in and said
01:12:57 Will Ferrell essentially said you guys are dead. Not only did
01:12:59 Will Ferrell think he was going to get it. It was like Will
01:13:01 Ferrell badly wanted it and this was like a dream of his to
01:13:04 play because he's a Lakers fan and he's wanted to play
01:13:07 apparently. I don't know. That's how the story goes. He's
01:13:09 going to play Jerry Bush. Yeah, this was the opportunity and it
01:13:12 didn't happen and now like Will Ferrell's like yeah, we're not
01:13:15 we're not cool anymore. Yeah. So like there will be no more
01:13:18 Talladega Knights. There will be no more step brothers. There
01:13:21 will be no more anchor Anchorman. And there will be no
01:13:25 more life and there will be no Mark Titus acting career
01:13:27 because of the show as well. So I mean it's think of all Will
01:13:31 Ferrell. Maybe we should put a show. Yeah, we should do a
01:13:33 show. Yeah. If I ever I actually was on a plane with Will
01:13:37 Ferrell from from LA to New York once and I I sat behind him a
01:13:42 couple rows and now like if had that flight happened, you know
01:13:45 say like a month from now TJ, I would have had something to talk
01:13:48 to him about. I would have been like what's up Will just
01:13:50 wanted to wanted to say I've also been personally affected
01:13:54 by from my entire damn **** Are you last thing I have are you
01:14:02 on like a salad diet? What's going on here? What's this?
01:14:04 Yeah, I've been I've been peeping the tweets. What's
01:14:06 going on? So I I moved last week and I figured like if I'm
01:14:10 going to make one monumental lifestyle change, I might as
01:14:14 well make another one on top of that. Yeah. And try and like
01:14:17 better my life. So I've just been like just crushing
01:14:20 salads. No lactose limited carbs intermittent fasting.
01:14:26 Let's go skincare routine. Let's go TJ. TJ glow up big
01:14:30 mirror. Let's go dude. Mirrors are good. I bought two lamps. I
01:14:36 had no lamps before that. Wow. Y'all y'all mind if I ****
01:14:40 around and become my best self and I'm not doing it for
01:14:44 anybody. I'm doing it for me. Do it for you man. The glow up
01:14:47 is real. I'm I'm I would love this. This would be fantastic.
01:14:50 I'm I'm rooting for it. Anyway, I can support this. Um there
01:14:54 are a lot of bad influences at this company. I want to be a
01:14:56 good influence on you TJ. I want to be I want you to uh
01:15:00 yeah. Yeah. I uh you're safe in my arms. Just come come come
01:15:04 run to me if you feel like you're being pressured to house
01:15:07 an entire box of pizza. Oh yeah. Some of these people
01:15:10 here. Yeah, you did it. I did do it. You're a big fellow at
01:15:13 one point. I was a big fella and uh I I but my I had to I I
01:15:19 had to get out of the Midwest. Right. So, you're stepping into
01:15:23 the Midwest hoping to live but II support it. Um one of my
01:15:27 visions, one of my pitches for Barstool is I want to launch
01:15:30 Barstool Fitness. Yeah. That's one of the brands I want to
01:15:33 launch here just because I think those two words next to
01:15:35 each other is like the funniest thing ever. Like the idea of
01:15:37 like us selling merch. It just says Barstool Fitness. Yeah.
01:15:40 Um but yeah, we gotta we gotta you could be the poster boy for
01:15:43 this. Yeah. Cuz II wanna I wanna I wanna uh uh uh an
01:15:47 umbrella that exists here. A brand umbrella where it's it's
01:15:50 just like when Men's he's training for his 10K. He does
01:15:53 it under the Barstool Fitness umbrella. Um when Billy
01:15:56 Football's trying to bench press like 400 pounds when he
01:15:59 hasn't lifted in a little while. Right. He's like, did
01:16:02 you challenge me? **** it. I'll do it. Put it on the bar. Yeah.
01:16:05 We we we film that under the Barstool Fitness. Just
01:16:07 everything would be so funny to me. The idea of a Barstool
01:16:10 Fitness umbrella. There was at one point an ad deal that
01:16:13 revolved around like a office weight loss competition and
01:16:18 they had to like scrap it because the group that was
01:16:20 supposed to lose weight did not or like they gained weight.
01:16:24 Over like the two weeks or something. So they had to like
01:16:27 rework that ad deal. So it's been attempted. It's been
01:16:30 attempted. Yeah. Well, maybe this could be the start of it.
01:16:33 Do you feel like you you got a good start on it? Do you feel
01:16:35 like you're you're going well for you? Like I said, like one
01:16:39 big change. Yeah. Just lump in changing what I'm eating into
01:16:43 living in a new city. What's the hardest? Like, I'm not
01:16:46 thinking about it. What's the hardest thing for you? Um I
01:16:50 don't know. I I I'm working on more changes. So, I wanna get
01:16:53 better at waking up earlier. I'm bad at that. Wow. Which I
01:16:56 have to now because mostly sports. Wow. Look at this. This
01:17:00 is incredible. I'm gonna become a **** beast. You're
01:17:04 gonna because this is this is. Watch out. This is this is
01:17:07 gonna be fantastic. That's awesome. Well, good for you,
01:17:10 man. Uh I'm very earnest. Uh wish you well and uh that would
01:17:16 be awesome. Uh thank you Ryan Konigsberg for uh for for
01:17:20 important some knowledge on Colorado football and uh thank
01:17:22 you to everybody watching and listening. We will be back
01:17:25 Friday. The schedule's been shifted. Uh so obviously this
01:17:28 came out on Wednesday. Um we're going to be back Friday.
01:17:31 Maybe a little NFL stuff. I need to I need to dip my toes
01:17:34 in the NFL waters because uh I I I need I I'm gonna try to get
01:17:39 an NFL guy on the show to just like I I might just talk about
01:17:43 Justin Fields for an hour. That might be what the show is but I
01:17:46 I'm very very excited about the NFL this year and uh we have
01:17:49 not really done much NFL stuff on this uh this program but
01:17:54 NFL starting up this weekend. So, we'll see you guys Friday.
