Box Squat History

  • last year
Alright, there ol' Jimbo, everyone, and their cat knows Box Squats came from Powerlifting, so you must've dropped a plate or two on your pate! Actually, l got quite the shock myself back in 2011/2012 reading Ron Fernando's brilliant Power Express series. Ron presented this thorough Powerlifting history along different geographical points during the final year of Powerlifting USAs publication. Having competed in Powerlifting for decades, Ron was a walking history book of the sport. In one installment, he mentioned that though popularized by Powerlifting, the Box Squat came from Bodybuilding. As a young lad living in Ceylon(now Sri Lanka), he recalled the first gym he went to had Weider Courses on the wall showing Box Squats! This was in the 1940s! How cool is that? I've posted from November 1951's Muscle Power: "Squats and Variations" by 1945 Mr. America Clancy Ross. The variation is referred to as a Parallel Squat where you absolutely DO NOT go lower than parallel! The Squat was performed by sitting down onto a Bench. Remember, this was FIFTEEN YEARS before Powerlifting became an organized sport!! Never stop learning! God Bless!
"Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?" - Luke 12:24
