Silver medal for Paalam
Carlo Paalam fell short in his bid to win another gold medal for the Philippines.
Paalam bowed to British Galal Yafai in the final match of the men's flyweight boxing and settled for the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday at the Kokugikan Arena.
Yafai floored Paalam with a series of combinations to the face at the 1:44 mark of the first round. The fighter from Cagayan de Oro City, however, tried to recover by being more aggressive in the second round but Yafai retaliated with solid counter punches.
Paalam dominated the third round but was not enough to reverse the outcome.
This is the fourth silver medal for the Philippines in Olympic boxing courtesy of Anthony Villanueva in 1964 in Tokyo, Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco Jr. in 1996 in Atlanta, and, most recently, Nesthy Petecio and Paalam in Tokyo.
