US protesters rally as CEO killing suspect appears in court

A handful of protesters rally in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, as Luigi Mangione, who is suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, appears in court. 'Our message is basically, universal healthcare now is what we want,' says Ethan Merrill, who drove for about eight hours from his home in South Bend, Indiana, with his wife, to protest outside the courthouse. 'But if not, free Luigi.'

00:00Our message is basically, you know, universal health care now is what we want, but if not,
00:19free Luigi.
00:20Uh, you know, hey, look, I'm, you know, we're going to move forward with a vigorous defense
00:29of these charges and, um, my mood hasn't changed, uh, you know, one bit.
00:33And he's, how is he feeling, attorney?
00:35Uh, you know, like I said, I mean, you know, just use common sense.
00:38He's, he's, uh, you know, uh, got a lot on his mind, but, uh, he's good.
00:42And we came out here because we feel that this is finally drawing people's attention
00:49to the issue of our very broken healthcare system.
00:52Um, I personally have been affected.
00:55My back is damaged because of negligence from my healthcare and primarily insurance.
01:02And I think that this was a very powerful message that was sent.
01:08And that's why there's so many people like crying out and saying, he's not wrong.
01:14Violence is wrong, but the message is not.
01:16The message that our healthcare system is broken and needs to be fixed is absolutely
01:21correct.
01:22Obviously I don't condone murder.
01:23I don't condone violence.
01:25I don't want to live in an eye for an eye society, but I do believe that in this situation
01:30when there is systemic violence coming from institutions like privatized healthcare, there
01:35is no viable alternative when politicians won't respond, when the law won't respond.
01:42Certainly we believe it's in the interest of justice to turn him over to the New York
01:46City Police Department and Manhattan District Attorney's Office, which we did.
01:51He is now in their custody.
01:53He will go forth with New York to await trial or prosecution for his homicide and related
02:02charges in New York.
02:42He is now in New York to await trial or prosecution for his homicide and related charges in New York.
