White House Fires Back After McCcain Slams Trump Over Syria Attack

The White House on Monday fired back after John McCain criticized President Trump.

The White House on Monday fired back at the suggestion that the recent chemical attack in Syria happened, in part, because of President Trump's statement regarding the United States' departure from that country.  Senator John McCain presented that as a possibility over the weekend, and the topic was raised during Monday's press briefing. "Didn't the president saying he wants to get out of Syria, essentially give a green light to Assad to do this, as John McCain has suggested?" a reporter asked. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded, "I think that it is outrageous to say that the president of the United States greenlit something as atrocious as the actions that have taken place over the last several days."  "We're going to continue looking at all of our options on the table, currently," she further noted. "I think the message that we sent to Assad was very clear, both in the president's words over the weekend and in our actions that we've taken in the past."  Just hours before McCain released his statement, President Trump announced via Twitter that there would be a "big price to pay" for the attacks.  It remains unclear what that will be, but last year when chemical weapons were used in one of the country's villages, Trump responded with a missile strike on a Syrian airfield.
