PolitiFact has named President Trump's continued denials of Russia's 2016 election meddling as 2017's "Lie of the Year."
"Those actions included the cyber-theft of private data, the placement of propaganda against particular candidates, and an overall effort to undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic process," the fact-checking outlet further noted. According to PolitiFact, Google, Facebook, and Twitter have also verified that Russia used their platforms to spread information designed to impact the decisions of U.S. voters.
Despite those revelations and ongoing investigations by Congress and a special counsel, Trump has held strong in his insistence that the entire Russia-related story is "fake news."
His recent tweets on the topic include, "Despite thousands of hours wasted and many millions of dollars spent, the Democrats have been unable to show any collusion with Russia," and, "Since the first day I took office, all you hear is the phony Democrat excuse for losing the election, Russia, Russia, Russia."
Trump has also stated, "Every time [Putin] sees me he says, 'I didn't do that,' and I believe, I really believe that when he tells me that, he means it."
