Seventy-one-year-old Wayne Grooms of South Carolina died on Sunday after getting bitten by a rattlesnake at the Santee National Wildlife Refuge; however, the cause of death is still pending since he reportedly had pre-existing health conditions.

A South Carolina conservationist has died after being bitten by a rattlesnake.
According to The State, 71-year-old Wayne Grooms was at the Santee National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday when the attack occurred.
The Clarendon County Deputy Coroner, Bucky Mock, is quoted as saying, “He was down by the lake at the Cuddo Unit and was bitten by the rattlesnake. On the walk back to the car, he collapsed and died there at the scene.”
However, it has also been reported that Grooms had pre-existing health conditions--a factor Mock declined to discuss--so the official cause of death has not yet been determined, notes the Manning Live.
While snakes including half a dozen venomous types are fairly common in the state, deaths caused by their bites are rare, totaling about six per year across the U.S.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
