The U.S. has long had a weight problem, and it appears that despite numerous campaigns and programs launched to address the issue, matters are only getting worse, notes WVIT.
A report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday shows that 38% of adult Americans are obese.
The number reflects a 40% prevalence among women, the highest ever recorded in the nation, and 35% for men, according to Time.
Both figures far exceed worldwide statistics, which show average female and male adult obesity rates of 15% and 11%, respectively.
The U.S. tallies were calculated using the most recent available data, which was gathered from roughly 5,000 Americans throughout 2013 and 2014.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the results are featured in the Journal of the American Medical Association along with commentary written by two of its editors.
They note that it may be time to rethink obesity reversal and prevention strategies.
