A new BBC documentary reveals the decades-long friendship between Pope John Paul II, who was a Cardinal when the relationship began, and Polish-American writer and philosopher Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka.

Pope John Paul II was close friends with a married Polish-American female for decades, according to a new BBC documentary. 
Philosopher and writer Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka reportedly first contacted the then-Cardinal in 1973 about a book he had authored; the two met in person and wrote numerous letters to each other thereafter.
The Pope’s letters, which are held in the National Library of Poland, were accessed by the BBC and became the basis for the film.
