NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland was abuzz with excitement on Tuesday, as the backplane for the incredibly powerful James Webb Space Telescope arrived.

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland was abuzz with excitement on Tuesday, as the backplane for the James Webb Space Telescope was delivered. 

The official press release explains that “the backplane is the ‘spine’ of the telescope, responsible for holding its 18 hexagonal mirrors and instruments steady while the telescope is looking into deep space.”

The next step after arrival, which will be broadcast live via webcam, is for workers to unpack the component and inspect it to make sure no damaged occurred during the transportation process.
