Dromedar - Carlings 2007
This clip was filmed at the Stockamollan Jazz Festival in the south of Sweden last June 2007.
Dromedar is a 2001 composition by Gunhild Carling . Next to playing all her instruments, she writes tunes, has been conducting symphony orchestras, now also leads her own big jazz orchestra. She had this tune arranged for this orchestra as well in 2006.
Here she performs it with the family. I was amazed how well and how jazzy she handles the little flute. During her solo she even finds ways to squeeze out these intriguing little blue notes what gives the tune this impact of jazz. After a fluent solo by brother Max on clarinet and an astonishing Ellingtonesque short piano solo by sis Gerd they fall back to finish the tune with Gunhild switching to trumpet. The tune is in the key of A minor, an absolute rotten key for trumpetplayers, but Gunhild masters this effortless. Totally amazing. My compliments go also to Aina and Ulf for their well controlled back-up . A magic performance of an original composition.
