General Motors, or GM, has been protected against billions of dollars in potential lawsuits related to faulty ignition switches in some of their cars.

A bankruptcy judge recently ruled that the U.S. automaker would not have to face defect-related claims for deaths and other injuries that happened before its 2009 bankruptcy.

In effect, the new, restructured GM would not be responsible for the liabilities of the old, troubled GM which was the company’s main position in its defense.
