Police in the Indian city of Malegaon are telling residents to submit photos and identifying information about their cows to be held in a database, likely in an effort to monitor violations of a recently enacted law prohibiting the sale, slaughter, or consumption of beef.

Police in the Indian city of Malegaon have started a cow registration database. 


As a result, local cow owners are being told to submit photos and a description about their animal’s age, appearance, and any unique features like a missing horn.


Although authorities are describing the initiative as a census to verify pets or working animals, they also admit that the information will be used to investigate potential cow slaughters.
