Kids’ Early Exposure To Peanuts Could Prevent Allergies

In a highly anticipated study, researchers led by King’s College London have found that kids who are fed peanuts early on are less likely to develop allergies to them compared to kids who practice complete avoidance.

A highly anticipated study published in the online version of The New England Journal of Medicine has found that allergies to peanuts can be greatly reduced in kids if their diets include them early on in life.

In the most comprehensive study of its kind, researchers led by King’s College London began studying 640 kids in the U.K. between the ages of four and eleven months who had severe eczema, egg allergy, or both, which can be indicators of future peanut allergies. 

Of the 530 children who showed no sensitivity to peanuts in an initial skin prick test, half were fed at least six grams, or about 24 peanuts, across at least three meals during the week, and the other half avoided them altogether.
