There’s nothing that signifies a classic car quite like a 1960s era Shelby Cobra. Recently, cutting-edge technology was used to create a modern day replica of the iconic 1965 Shelby Cobra 427.

The US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory is behind the innovative project. A significant part of the car was 3D printed including the chassis. Reflective of today’s motor vehicles, the car also features an electric engine.

The unique Shelby Cobra 427 was created to honor the model’s 50th anniversary. ORNL played a crucial role in the 3-D printing methods.

The entire vehicle weighs about 14 hundred pounds with more than a third 3D printed thanks to ORNL’s “Big Area Additive Manufacturing” machine which is capable of printing parts greater than one cubic meter in size.
