A 9-year-old child with Down syndrome is now safe and sound thanks in part to a police K-9. On Saturday, December 20th, the boy, identified as Vincentio Spears walked into the woods by his family’s home in the Sanford, Florida area.

Officials from the Seminole County Sheriff's Office were soon contacted to help find him. Amber the K-9 and a Sheriff's Office helicopter were both recruited for the search efforts.

Going by a scent from the child’s clothing, Amber ran through about a mile and a half of thick woods before locating Vincentio. The helicopter crew then alerted deputies of his whereabouts and sent an ATV out to pick him up.

Vincentio’s mother, Stephanie Spears commented “He didn't understand how dangerous it was for him, that he was in danger. He was just kind of excited that he got to ride the 4-wheeler, and he saw the doggie and he got to see fire trucks. So, he was OK, thank goodness.”

Vincentio made out pretty good in the end, as he received some law enforcement stickers, a badge and even a fire helmet. 2 and a half year old Amber is the latest k-9 bloodhound addition to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

She completed her tracking training not long before coming to the rescue of Vincentio.
