Modular Micro-City Proposed To Be Built On Bridge

A French architect is looking to capitalize on bridges in Paris as a way to expand urban dwellings through modular structures.

As the world's population along with rental prices in cities continue to rise globally, many architects are generating unique solutions to create more affordable space.

Stéphane Malka, of Malka Architecture, has proposed building modular units on top of a Parisian bridge across the Seine.

The project is called Pont9, and is being billed as a micro-city.

The new structure would be elevated more than 49 feet above the bridge and could be used for various spaces.

Residences, as well as offices, art galleries, restaurants and open public spaces could find a place within the infrastructure.

Malka has billed the idea as a, “voluntary ghetto, an organized community of ideas, a hood built from an appropriation of land both conquered and controlled.”

Residents would be in charge of running the spaces they choose in the building.

Scaffolding, interconnected footbridges and a system of pylons, would construct the dwellings. This type of architecture is also capable of being disassembled and relocated if need be.

Alas, the concept does not mention how to integrate utilities like sewer and electricity.
