eBay Testing Touch Screen Mirrors In Stores

Most people associate eBay with the online auctioning site that offers pretty much anything and everything. However, the company is striving to make a name for itself in the world of in-store shopping.

eBay has partnered with fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff to test a new product. The new Rebecca Minkoff stores in San Francisco and New York have integrated digital technology with mirrors to assist their customers.

The huge mirrors come to life and double as touchscreens. The glass screens allow customers to browse through the store’s inventory with the simple swipe of a finger.

Instead of having to carry garments into the changing room, shoppers can use the massive screens to pick out items they would like to try on. When everything has been gathered up, he or she gets a text alert saying that their garments are ready.

The dressing room is outfitted with a smart mirror as well, so if something turns out to be too small or the wrong color, shoppers can request another from the privacy of their changing room.

All garments have RFID tags in them, so the items are recognized and accounted for in the dressing room. The RFID tags also work with the smart mirrors to offer matching accessories to the customer.

The head of innovation at eBay explained the reason behind the shift into real-world shopping. He remarked “People still want to use their five senses, not just the one sense you use when you’re doing e-commerce. So physical retail, a showroom, I think will never go away.”
