Have you ever wanted to see through the frame of your car to avoid blind spots?

Researchers from Keio University in Japan have developed a projection system that makes the side panels and back seat of a vehicle completely transparent.

Cameras that are mounted on the outside of the car send images to an onboard computer that displays them live using a projector.

Added to the projector is a lens array, a half mirror, and retroreflective screen to show the driver what is on the side, or behind the frame of their car.

Since the images are being projected, the system still works if there is a passenger sitting in the backseat.

The retroreflective screen displays light on the same path that it is picked up from using small beads that refract the light and bend it to be displayed at the correct angle.

Earlier versions of the system had drivers wear a headset to keep track of where they were looking.

Researchers successfully tested the system on a Toyota Prius, but it could also be used in different vehicles like an airplane, or to make walls transparent in other settings.
