A number of Australians recently got treated to an unusual sight in the sky. It is a seldom-seen cloud formation called 'Fallstreak Hole'.

Photos taken by locals in Southern Australia caused a buzz on social media. It didn’t take long for users to speculate what the cloud formation could be.

Some thought UFOs were to blame while others shared their belief that it was a sign indicating the end of the world was near. Forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology, Michael Efron quickly put the rumors to rest and said that it is just a natural weather phenomenon.

He explained “It looks like a fallstreak cloud, also known as a punch hole cloud. They form when the water temperature in the cloud is below freezing, but the water has not yet frozen due to a lack of ice nucleation particles.”

When the liquid starts to freeze, the ice crystals drop through the cloud. The end result is something that looks like a hole in the sky with clouds all around it.

Witnessing a fallstreak cloud is usually a rare occurrence, but another one was spotted last month in Perth, Australia.
