Should Mars Mission Crew Be Women Only?

Kate Greene spent 4 months participating in a NASA research initiative and discovered that an all female crew may be the way to go when the time comes to launch the Mars mission.

A recent study resulted in the suggestion that an all-female crew may be the best option for NASA’s future manned Mars mission.

Kate Greene was one of the study participants who spent 4 months involved in the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, or HI-SEAS, research project.

She and 5 other people lived in a geodesic dome on a desolate mountainside, simulating the day to day lives of astronauts, which included suiting up for all treks outside the structure.

As Greene has a background in science she started to conduct some studies and analyses of her own.

One of them was tracking the caloric intakes and outputs among her fellow test subjects.

She found that not only did the three women use a significantly smaller amount of energy than the men; they also required a lot less food to keep going.

Given the challenges of supplying the Mars mission travelers with ample nourishment throughout the incredibly long journey; she suggests that a spaceship filled with women may be the best route.

Less food being transported means less weight on the craft. That alone could cut fuel costs and present fewer complications with getting people Mars bound.

What do you think about an all-female Mars mission crew?
