Controversy has followed the recent incident in which President Obama saluted two Marine guards with the same hand that he was using to carry his coffee cup.

US presidents have a tradition of saluting the Marine guards that are stationed outside of the presidential helicopter, called the Marine One.

Online reactions have been very critical of President Obama's blunder.

Although Obama reportedly prefers black tea to coffee, netizens have taken to calling the incident the coffee salute, or latte salute. Comments range from chastising the president, to speculating on what he was in his cup.

A Twitter post from the National Republican Congressional Committee reads: "Wait - did President Obama just salute the Marines with a LATTE in his hand?!"

Obama’s critics made their voices heard on another occasion, when the president didn’t salute his marine guards at all.

Former President George W. Bush was known for saluting Marine guards while carrying his dog in the other hand.

Although it isn’t necessary for civilian presidents to salute, Ronald Reagan began the tradition in 1981 during his presidency.
