NASA has been anticipating the arrival of their Maven spacecraft to the atmosphere of Mars.

After traveling 442 million miles through space over the course of the last ten months, Maven has finally entered orbit around the red planet.

The craft will not be alone. India’s first interplanetary spacecraft called the Mars Orbiter Mission, or Mangalyaan, is scheduled to enter orbit shortly after MAVEN.

There are already three spacecraft orbiting Mars, including one from Europe and two from NASA, along with two active NASA Mars rovers that are investigating conditions on the surface.

Maven is reportedly the first mission to study the upper atmosphere of Mars, in an effort to understand the changing conditions, climate, and habitability of the planet.

NASA's director of planetary science, Jim Green is quoted as saying: "It's really the planetary scientists that are blazing the trail for us to understand everything about Mars that we need to for humans to be able to land safely on Mars and explore and journey around the planet."

The mission will focus on the composition of gas escaping from the atmosphere, which might be a factor in the climate changes.
